I had Mirena placed in August 2009. I was so excited when I first heard about it; shorter, lighter periods, decrease of cramping, no taking a pill daily, birth control for up to 5 years... Well I am so ready to have it taken out! My face broke out worse than a hormonal teenager and I have NO sex drive since it's been inserted, none. Also I have to wear a panty liner every day and night due to spotting. I didn't experience any weight gain but would rather take a few pounds versus all the side effects I do experience. I would not recommend Mirena to anyone and am scheduling an appointment to have it taken out asap.

I've had the mirena for only about two months now and about two weeks after it was placed my stomach ballooned to over twice the size it was before and I've gained about seven pounds that are unexplainable. I have not had a regular period which is understandable but I cant deal with the weight gain and bloating. I just had a baby four months and am trying so hard to loose the remainder of the baby weight, and I was doing extremely well until I got the mirena, and nothing drastic has changed about my diet or exercise routine.Does anybody have any idea how long this is suppose to last or what I can do to combat the bloating/weight gain besides getting it removed?

I had my Mirena inserted in May 2009, I no longer have my period. No mood swings, no cramping, no bloating, no headaches other than when my 2 year old has her tantrums. I love it. I wear a panty liner just in case, however I still haven't spotted. Did it hurt when it was put in? Of course, you’re having something shaped like a T put into you cervics which should be tightly closed. The pain after the procedure was like period cramping. No weight gain no breakouts. I absolutely love it.

WOW..all these negative reviews! I have been on loestrin 24 for over a year or so. I had heavy heavy periods so my gyno prescribed these. Other than the break thru bleeding...I have noticed no side effects. For me the pill has been wonderful. My periods are so lite that sometimes all I need is a panty liner. It has worked wonders for me...and I am in my 40's. I have 2 kids and I would NOT want to feel pregnant and these do NOT make me feel preggo at all. I guess it works for some...it's not for everybody! But my experience is GREAT!!

I'm on my second week of Loestrin. I started on the first day of my period, I had two heavy days and 3 days of light spotting....only requiring a panty liner. I have had a bit of hormonal acne crop up, which I was prepared for, as my skin doesn't like change of any kind. I'm sure this will even out over the next couple of months as my body adjusts to the hormones in Loestrin. Several years ago I was on ortho-cyclen and when I first started on that bcp I had similar skin issues, so I'll give it a couple of months before becoming concerned. Other than the breakouts I have had no negative side effects so far. That said...I think judging a pill that switches up your hormone levels prior to being on it longer than 2 months is a bit premature. I realize that I have to be patient and wait out some side effects as my body adjusts.

I received my iud im October of 2008 it was a little painful when inserted but very quick and simple. I had a period for almost 2 months straight then it calmed way down and i had it every other month for 8-9 days but so light that i could wear a panty liner. i haven't had any children so my side effects may be different from some of yalls. I haven't noticed any hair loss but i have always lost lots of hair when in the shower. I have had major severe cramping the whole time, even now. I haven't noticed and mood swings or sleep issues or sex issues but i am also very young so. I have had at least 5 bacterial infections if not more, i believe its from the iud. That is my only real complaint it smells and is always pouring out of me. I haven't had a period for 3-4 months now except for a light spotting for a single day, which i love! i have felt it during sex maybe 3 times not bad though. i have noticed hot flashes but never thought of it as being the iud. idk though ive been pretty happy with it...

I've been taking Balziva for over a year, and I don't know what the heck these people are talking about! I think that before taking the pill they had serious menstrual and emotional problems. Before birth control I had long, heavy and painfully crippling periods. I do not have that anymore. My periods last about 4-5 days which are not painful and moderate flow at best. Actually, until recently, they had been so light that I couldn't use tampons and a panty liner was sufficient. Maybe the last couple times have I been heavy enough for a tampon (perhaps because my body finally adjusted after the last few years of birth control.) I was a moody person before birth control so I'm definitely now blaming that on the pill. I still get extra angry/moody that week, but I did before the pill too. And the only time I spot between periods is when I miss a pill, which only lasts for a couple days.

The only side effect that I could say is caused by the drug is the loss of sex drive. But again, that may not necessarily be the pill. It could be my place in life. I'm a college student with an extremely busy schedule - full time school loaded with too much homework and I work as a flight instructor (tell me teaching some new by how to land is not stressful!!) Oh, and I lost the closest person to me two years ago which I still haven't accepted and basically closed my heart after that. I don't have trouble losing weight as long as I watch my diet and exercise. I don't really think that Balziva has caused any negative side effects, at least nothing that could be explained by something else in my life. I gain weight because I let myself go on break. I lose weight because I eat right and exercise after that.

Wow. This is amazing to hear everyones experiences. I've been on the Nuvaring for about 3 years and thought I loved it, until I realized all the symptoms I was having (brown discharge, moodiness, decreased libido, tiredness, etc.) was all related to that nasty little ring. I realized, I couldn't take it anymore. I took it out yesterday and I will never put another Nuvaring in again. I can't wait to get back to myself and have a normal cycle of menstruation. Before I ever started the NuvaRing I was very in-tune with my body and cycles and I knew exactly when I was ovulating. I am looking forward to having those days again. I will certainly not miss having all of my underwear ruined by that disgusting brown discharge. It got to the point where I had to automatically put on a panty liner everyday no matter what day of the month it was. NOT FUN!!

I have had the mirena for about 2 months now. Since having it inserted I have had a period the entire time. It may be heavy for a couple of days and then light and at other times I spot. Any how I have to wear a panty liner at all times just in case because I never know when to expect it. I have had this foul vaginal discharge that I can't seem to get rid of. I get headaches all the time and I'm always tired. Too tired to even be in the mood for sex. Why, just this past Saturday I purchased some Nympho Niagra at a sex party its suppose to help put you in the mood.... lol. Does anyone have any idea how long the bleeding will last? And what about this foul smell? I have never had either and its really starting to bother me to the point where i'm ready to have it removed. I thought this was suppose to be something good, ie shorter and lighter periods. Well the past 2 months for me is like hell. I just need some honest advice.
Thanks!

I am curious as to know if anyone else has experienced the same problems I seem to be experiencing now. I got my Mirena inserted Oct 28, 08 and bled heavily for 3 weeks. Since then I have had spotting every now and then but no period. I have cramps all the time and it feels sort of like being prego but I am not. I also have discharge all the time and it started after I got Mirena put in. I am trying to remain optimistic about this because I want it to work, will someone please give me some advice as to what I should do?
Thanks

I thought of a couple of other side effects that have been with me since insertion, 22 months ago: Excessive wetness. Sorry for the TMI but it's true. I'm sure many of you posted about this but I didn't see it yet, as far as I read. I have to wear a panty liner every single day because of the daily, heavy discharge. Also: Overly dry labia. Cracked & sometimes bleeding labia. That too, has been a daily issue.

I got the Mirena put in at the end of 2007. It hurt for a couple of days and then I bled for non stop (no joke) for 7 months straight. A panty liner was all it took, but still, I had had enough of the bleeding. All the while I could always feel it. If I moved funny or if my kids jumped on my stomach I could feel it. Even when I laid on my back I could feel it. Finally I decided I wanted it taken out so in Aug. 2008 I had it removed. No big deal. I thought things would go right back to being normal. Well, ever since August my periods are now very irregular. I will be a couple weeks late or a week early, every month it is different. Honestly, I didn't really consider the Mirena until I started checking online for why I am all the sudden irregular. Then I came across this site of side effects, and my symptoms are very similar to the ones that I have read. I have acne now like I did when I was going through puberty and I thought it was my cleanser, but now I think it has to do with the Mirena. I am also certain that I am irregular because of it. I am trying to get pregnant again and usually I am pregnant within three or four months after stopping birth control, but so far nothing has happened and it has been six months, so I am beginning to wonder if the Mirena has something to do with it.

It is so funny because i read everyone's comments on how terrible this pill is but i have to jump for joy for this pill. This is my fourth month on this pill . I have my period for 3 days and I only have to were a panty liner . On my second month i did spot for to weeks, that was the only thing bad about this pill. I have none of those terrible side affects that I read people complain about. I read comments on sites like this before I started taking this pill so I went in thinking the worst. Everyone is different !! I have to say this was a great choose for me . J., Fl.

Tomorrow will be my last day of the first pack of Loestrin, but during my 3rd week I got a period. Is this NORMAL? I am not used to taking a daily medication and I forget to take it at the same time everyday, even though I normally try to take it when I wake up in the morning. I wear a panty liner because I have been spotting for the past few days, even after the "regular" period was over

Just letting you all know, ( i posted two or three days ago) i had my mirena removed yesterday after nearly a year with it in, and I SWEAR i felt better INSTANTLY. the cramps ive had for three months straight non stop are gone!! as soon as she took it out the cramps stopped, i felt like i could breath again. And removal was not painful what so ever, i didn't even feel it. she had to tell me it was out. Hopefully i'll lose the extra weight i gained and the acne will go away along with every other side effect ive had. i never associated all of my troubles with the Mirena...but now i know! I think women need to be better informed about this device... i honestly thought about walking into the doctors office yesterday with every complaint on this site printed out and telling my gyno she should hand THESE out with their brochures telling women how wonderful it is. I didn't though, but i did try to tell her about everything i had experienced and i pretty much felt like she didn't even want to hear it. I will keep posting on this site through the next couple months to let everyone know how i'm doing. I honestly feel like if you've had mirena in for six months and it isn't working you should get it removed immediately and don't let your doctor try and convince you otherwise like mine did. WOMEN listen to your bodies!!! you know when something isn't right... forget what the doctors say and do what makes you feel comfortable happy and healthy.

I have been taking Quasense for almost 8 weeks now and have probably been bleeding for about 4 of those weeks. This is the first bc I've ever taken, so I imagine some of it could be due to my body adjusting, but with so many women saying that they did not have problems with Seasonale, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. I had no problem the first 2 weeks, and when I began light bleeding on the 3rd week, I didn't think it was a big deal especially with it being fairly light compared to my usual cycle. It lasted for a week and 1/2, but I never had to wear anything more than a panty liner. My cycle was also typically closer to every 3 1/2 weeks rather than 4 without a pill, so I figured my body was probably just getting used to things. About 2 1/2 weeks ago I started bleeding again. It has still been lighter than my normal cycle, but much more than I would consider spotting. My wedding is in a little over a month and I'm not sure what to do. Switching to a new pill could cause problems too, but I don't want to be bleeding through my entire honeymoon in Mexico. I have not had any other negative symptoms though. No weight gain, no acne, no moodswings.

Amber here again... today is week 4 since having Mirena removed. Yesterday I started my first period (yay!). Although, I recommend stocking up on "super" feminine products. I've always had a light flow, so I get regular tampons and use maybe 1 per day. That assumption was a mistake. I've gone through 4? 5? I've lost count, and ruined a pair of underwear. I finally wised up and put on a panty liner (just in case).

My skin is silky soft.. no more big weird boils on my back, chest and face (that would never pop, they just sat there and festered). The B.O and vaginal odor (both caused by constant and excessive sweating) is GONE. I even go on hour long bike rides and I still smell like deoderant. It's totally amazing.
My 4 month pregnant tummy went down the first night of having Mirena removed and I had my shape back, even if I am heavier. I can actually feel my stomach muscles again. Thank God.
I haven't lost any weight, I haven't tried quite frankly.
I've noticed some increase in sex drive, although not huge yet. Sex doesn't seem disgusting anymore. That's a plus.
I can't comment on mood swings, because I've been on Prozac for 2.5 months and you can't just stop taking it. I am planning on weaning, but I heard you get a Mirena Crash so I have been continueing for now.
Let me just say that before I went on the prozac I experienced depression I'd never felt before, especially during PMS... I have never ever felt that in my life it was the most bizarre thing.
My sex drive is probably also effected by the Prozac.
Most people have said they felt like they were in a 'fog' while they had the Mirena in. I've noticed increased spaciness since having it removed. I frequently walk into a room and forget why I went there. This happens to everyone I'm sure, and myself even, but not ALL the time.
I had Mirena from Sept 2006 until March 2008.
I didn't start experiencing such awful side effects until Sept 2007 (a year into it). Altho, I DID gain 20 lbs by the year mark. And all in my gut.

Anyway hope this helps.

Amber

I love it. I've had it for a week now. Very little spotting, minimal cramps, and no discharge. I was told of the side effects, and knew all of this before I got it. Hormones act differently to some people. I did not react well with the patch or pill. So far, so good with Mirena. I don't think a lawsuit or complaint is exactly the way to go. You should start with talking to your doctor more and seeing if they give out pamphlets or just did not tell you everything you were supposed to know. I also believe not everyone's symptoms should be blamed on Mirean. People usually "feel" things they don't really have, esp. after coming on here and reading things. You can make your body feel that stuff. The insertion was not comfortable by any means, but it also wasn't a pain that I would ever cry or scream over. I'm 21, relatively healthy, and never had children. I work in healthcare and see people react like this all the time-no tolerance to pain, and just wanting an excuse as to where some of their "pains" come from.

Wow! I feel so bad for all of you ladies! I am 37yo with no kids and no plans to have any. Inserting the Mirena was the best thing I could have ever done. I had my IUD inserted in Nov. '07 and the only "side effect" I have experienced is instead of my period being 3 to 4 days with no cramps (pre-IUD insertion) it is now a full week with cramps (post-IUD insertion). I've experienced no weight gain, no hair loss, no mood swings, no depression. But my period is no where near as heavy as it used to be. It's to the point where I only have to use a panty liner and no pads. I take either Motrin or Aleve for my cramps and I use Thermacare heating pads for my cramps which gets me through the day. Good luck to the rest of you.

I am now 28 and I've had the Mirena IUD since Jan. 2006. I have gained 20lbs since. It has to be the Mirena, because I have never been over 135 lbs, even after childbirth, I was only 130. Just recently I started to get bad headaches everyday. I keep Motrin in stock. I normally keep a bottle of Motrin for at least a year, but now I buy one once a month. I was told there were no side effects with this method as far as weight gain was concerned, but I feel I was lied to. You know doctors get compensated for getting us to use these meds by the pharm companies. Seriously though, the Mirena works. I have had unprotected sex with my boyfriend numerous amounts of times, and I did not get pregnant. The thing is the weight gain, the headaches, the increased body sweats, and bodily fluids, **you have to shower more** it's a must, I have to wear a panty liner at all times or my panties will be wet. When the Mirena was inserted, I was terrible pain for 2 months and I blead for 6 weeks non stop. I would ball up in a knot sometimes and could not move. I had to push myself to go to work and school and plus I had 2 little girls. It was terrible. I don't have a period anymore now, I just spot from time to time, but the panty liner is always in place, so that's all I really use. My only concern with this IUD really is the headaches, and the weight issue, I also heard it could make me sterile.. That's is something I think I would have to sue over. I want a son one day. It's one thing for me to not want anymore kids by my choice, but to have the ability to reproduce taken away from me and it's not by choice.....I would be devastated. I am thinking about having it remove before my 5 years is up. I don't miss my period, so I don't know. I would like to loose the weight though, but I have no energy.

My Mirena procedure was pretty painful, but the pain went away after a few hours. I haven't had a single problem since then...that was January 25. I am completely shocked to read all of these problems people are having. I had no idea. I didn't even bleed very much after the procedure....I had to wear a panty liner for a day...not even a real pad. That was it. Hopefully I don't start having problems. I feel totally like myself.

I've been skimming through all of these blogs and I feel like I must be one of the lucky few that didn't get an side effects from the Mirena. I had it implanted on Sept. 21st 2007 ( 6 weeks after I had my baby) and since then I really haven't had any problems with it. I didn't feel a thing when it was implanted and after wards... just a little bleeding but no more then a panty liner. I stopped having my period with in the first 3 months. Sure the occasional spotting here and there, but nothing to get stressed over. My hair was falling out more the usual in the shower, but my doctor assured me that it usually happenes after women have babies and will go over after the first few months. So to all the women who've had problems, I'm sorry to hear it, maybe the Mirena just wasn't right for you all. But it sure was right for me. ;)

I had Mirena inserted 4 weeks ago and have had slight spotting but nothing more than needing to wear a panty liner daily which I did before anyway. I had pretty bad cramping for a few hours after insertion and since then nothing more than a little bit here and there (not more than a minute or so each time). I've been reading all these terrible side effects and am in disbelief that neither my Doctor nor the Mirena website mentioned HALF of these. Of course this only happens with some women but I believe everything should be laid out on the table as possible side effects. I do not feel that Mirena has effected me in the least compared to most of these women who have posted experiences but I still feel it is unfair that they list about 7 side effects on their website and say they have about a 10% chance of happening. Good luck to everyone who is using Mirena or who ever has!

I started NuvaRing on Thursday, June 15 2007 and Monday, November 5 was the final draw. I talked with my best friend and admitted to her that something was seriously wrong with me but I didn’t know what. I told my friend I need to talk to someone about how I’ve changed for the worst. Things has gotten so bad with me I actually thought I was Bipolar. So we did some research on NR and when I read the different stories I was blown away because I would have never linked what I was going through to NR.

I had no sex drive non-what so ever, the thought of my boyfriend touching me made me sick to my stomach. I would actually get into physical altercations with him which has never ever happened, my attitude had taken a turn for the worst, I would have thoughts of hurting people that made me angry, I had to wear a panty liner everyday because of the discharge, migraine headaches, pain in my right breast, nausea, abd cramping, feeling tired, waking up in night sweats, felt the need to be alone, and mood swings. Yesterday I called my Dr. and told her I need to get off NR ASAP so she said she would call me back but never did so I took it out for the final time last night. Before I start taking anything else my body will be free of any birth control until NR is totally out my system if this means slipping up and getting pregnant in the process then so be it, it will be a first for me anyway.

NuvaRing was wonderful and the thought of not having to take a pill everyday was even better but the side effects will make you become someone you don’t know and your life will take a turn for the worst and it will have you thinking you are loosing your mind. For those who had no side effects consider your selves lucky because I wouldn’t want anyone to experience what I’ve went through while on NR.

I had the Mirena put in in March of 2007, shortly after my 6 week post partum check up. I have always had terrible side effects from bc pills and I am allergic to latex (....condoms,etc), besides I'm married and it's so weird and inconvenient for a married couple, with 3 children and LITTLE time for sex to use condoms!! With all this in mind, my obgyn convinced me to consider this product. I did my homework as instructed and all research came back with the same answers: NO DOCUMENTED side effects. My biggest concerns were weight gain/mood, aggression. I was assured this would not happen to me again. The insertion was super easy; didn't feel a thing, then a few days later it felt as though I was in labor all over again and this lasted for about a week. I continued to bleed for approx 5 months, and since i have had to wear a panty liner everyday for discharge/spotting. After reading this website, I've come to realize that all the "strange" things happening to me are apparently not so strange/rare: the terrible headaches, leg cramps, SEVERE acne that scars (everyday of the month, currently using proactiv for that, but not helping one bit! and i've never had a zit before in my life), I'm 27 and feel as though i have the joints of an 85 year-old...my knees and hips ache 24-7. Yes, the mood swings are there too. My poor husband and children....i'm happy one sec, then biting off heads the next. I have also had severe constipation, having to do regular enemas to have bm's. Worst of all, after busting my butt to lose 25lbs of baby wgt 3 wks after giving birth, I started gaining it back 3 weeks later after having Mirena inserted. I have gained approx 38 lbs since the end of March. I have completely changed my diet to..sugar busters, 1200 calories a day, exercise 5 days a week, excessive amount of fiber and water, and i'm even taking ephedra/hoodia pills 3x a day. I can honesly say I have not lost 1 pound, not 1. We are not sure if we want anymore children, but if so not for a few years, but I cannot endure the suffering anymore, and neither can my family. please reconsider having the Mirena put in your body! So many women post complaints, why is there NO documented side effects with this device with the manufacturer and physicians who recommend it?????
