I am a healthy 20 year old. I have been on Yasmin for a little over 2 years. When i began taking Yasmin, i immediately gained over 10 pounds. I Felt very nauseous every time i started a new pack. But the nausea only lasted 1 day, & the rest of the month was fine. After a year on Yasmin I became use to it ( I'm guessing) & The nausea went away. Now, 2 years into taking it, it has no negative side effects on me.

I recently went to my Gynecologist for a pap & my prescription refill. She handed me YAZ. Though i was grateful for free birth control, i cant help but feel that taking YAZ for the last week was a bad idea. I'm VERY moody, sick to my stomach (even as I'm writing this, I'm choking it down), tired & bloated. I HATE YAZ!!! If all these effects are coming on now ( 1 week into taking it) i cant imagine ho much WORSE its gonna be next week.

I will be calling my gynecologist tonight, to ask if its okay to just switch back to Yasmin, in the middle of the YAZ pack. (hopefully she says yes)

I will never go off YASMIN again.
:(

I've had it in for 7months now and all they did was put me on menopause pills for 2 weeks to stop the bleeding. And if I complained to the them about pain of any kind they said take a couple pain killers. I had a irregular pap which I've never had in my life and they said wait til next year to see if it clears on its own. I don't even think my c-section has healed enough for the iud and they said it was fine I think it was just a scam! I'm still bleeding still in pain and I don't think 23 yr olds should be on menopause pills. Those jerks didn't even tell me what kind of pills they were I found out on my own. I worried that it will only get worst. At time I feel like I might faint. What does one do if the doctors try desperately to find way for you to keep it in?

My daughter just turned 19 years old yesterday. She is a Christian and has kept herself pure and plans to until marriage. She attends a Christian University. She had her last gardisil shot in May. Since this shot she has been complaining of severe fatigue, dizziness and has had no menstrual cycle. My first thoughts were concerns that this was caused by the gardisil shot. She just saw a doctor at her University last week. All the test run were negative and the doctor wants to further test for osteoporosis and place her on birth control pills to regulate her periods. She does not want this. The doctor did not perform a pap smere due to her being a virgin.I have contacted our local doctor and was informed that there was no way to tell if any of her symptoms could be side affects of the gardisil shots she received. My husband decided to investigate the side affects of gardisil and came upon this web-site. I am just wandering if this should be legally investigated and how could someone find out if there are legal ratifications for this problem. I am just praying that these are temporary symptoms and my daughter will recover and be able to have a children after marriage. Please pray with me and I will for each of you as well.

Hi, just wanted to follow up. I HAD my Mirena in for roughly 3 months. I had it removed after a lot of speculation. I must admit, I feel a lot better. My hair is no longer falling out by the handfuls, my moods have evened back out, joint pain is still there but not nearly as bad. The weight thing...I lost 10 of the 25 pounds within the first month, and have not lost an ounce since then despite a strict diet and moderate exercise. But, the odd thing is, that 3 days post removal, I started my period, bled HEAVY for 4 days and back to normal flow on days 5 thru 8 (yes, 8) but now, a month and twelve days later...no period, and I'm right back to retaining water in my hands and feet, and again have the bloated gut, with lots of cramping. It's very odd...

If anyone can offer some insight, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm actually dreaming again!!! It's awesome. Sleep is good!!

And another thing, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of women are saying they had theirs inserted more than a year ago...the "IUD" Mirena hasn't been on the market that long. The previous Mirena was a coil, not a silicone IUD. I've been told by one of the doctors at the hospital I work at, that it's more so a reaction to the silicone than to the hormone...food for thought...

And, along with the few lucky women who have been successful with their Mirena endeavor, I also have 2 friends who absolutely LOVE theirs! No side effects, no weight gain, nothing! That's why I decided to get mine, but I knew within a matter of days that something was going on. I wasn't my self, and after never in my life struggling with weight, I all of a sudden was outgrowing all of my clothes. It wasn't pleasant. So again, congratulations to the lucky ones, and for all others, my sympathy. Removal is quite simple, no pain at all. It was over before I could even hold my breath. Felt similar, but not even as bad, as a pap.

I've been on Yasmin for about a year and a half now... This is my first time really using birth control. I tried BC in my teens but hated the side effects so I got off them right away. Now that I am in a serious relationship and we're both in agreement we don't want to get pregnant until after we're married, I decided to start BC. I've had a few side effects but didn't really think much about them until I went for my annual pap last week. My doctor asked how the Yasmin was going. I told him that I've noticed I have little to no sex drive. He basically said that's not typical for Yasmin. I decided to get online and research side effects, that's when I came across this website. After reading several of the responses, something just clicked... I have many of the same symptoms!

I have never in my life experienced migraines until I started Yasmin. Fortunately I've only had a few since I started but nevertheless, not fun. I do however get frequent headaches. While I'm on the subject of my head, my memory seems to have slightly diminished. I often have a hard time remembering the simplest of words, causing me to misspeak often. I even have a difficult time remembering what I did a few days before! I've always had a very good memory! Has anyone else experienced difficulty with your memory??

About 4 mos after being on Yasmin I had a really weird uncomfortable pain just above my inside ankle. A few days later that pain had traveled up to the inside middle portion of my calf. At this point the spot where the pain resided was now discolored, looked almost like a bruise. Within a few hours the pain had moved up my leg just below my knee, still on the inside of my leg, again discolored. To make a long story short I went to my doctors office and he said I had a blood clot in my leg. He told me to keep my leg elevated and apply heat that it should be okay. I haven't had any bad cases like this again but I do occasionally get a similar pain in my leg but the pain seems to subide after a day or so. Ladies, if you experience similar pains and/or discoloring on the back of your leg(s) make sure you see your Dr. This can be deep vein thrombosis which are dangerous blood clots, they can cause pulmonary embolism's- blood clots in the lungs.

In addition I've had many other side effects including: little to no sex drive, severe dryness down below (kind of causes problems in the bedroom...), slight vision problems (I usually have near perfect vision, now I often feel like my vision is blurry), odd colored periods (brownish colored), sticky mucusy periods, a very sharp yet dull and uncomfortable pain in my right breast (at least once a month), frequent Urinary Tract Infections, mood swings (had a bad one this morning, threw a fit because my hair took forever to dry- so trivial, right?), severe melasma (hyperpigmentation) on my upper forehead and the top of both cheekbones, and last but certainly not least very low energy.

I actually have a follow-up appt this afternoon with my Dr. I am going to ask him about other options for birth control. Thank you to all of you for writing about your symptoms! Your comments have really helped! Good luck to all of you!

I am so relieved to has found this page. I had no idea how many people on the NuvaRing were having the problems I've been having. I started using the NuvaRing a few years ago soon after starting to have sex. I wasn't very good at remembering my pill everyday, so I thought it would be a good option. I was so happy in the beginning because I could depend on it.

However, the first major thing that happened a few months later was IBS symptoms, which has put a big damper on my life since. I never know what food item will cause me to cramp and bloat next. It changes every day. I have always doubted this symptom attributed to Nuva until now. I thought my metabolism was changing because I was entering the workforce and exposing myself to new levels of stress.

Next, I never expected that it would diminish my sex drive. I have to convince myself that I'm in the mood, feeling responsible for maintaining a healthy sex life with my husband. That sounds so horrible, and it is. I'm almost never in the mood, not even to masturbate, and I have to keep a calendar to keep track of the last time I pleased my husband. I have not had a real orgasm since before starting the nuva.

It doesn't help to not only be not in the mood, but also when I do have sex, it's uncomfortable, burning, and very painful urinating afterwards. On many occasions, the ring gets pulled out a little during sex, causing a moment of uncomfortable prodding plastic for both of us, and I need to stop long enough to take it out and put it somewhere so I remember to put it back in again. Sex is more comfortable without it after that, but the irritation is still there. It takes a few days to heal before having sex again.

The last straw is more recent. I began to get discharge - a lot - starting the second week in the cycle. It wasn't a yeast infection, as I had a physical and pap at this time and the doctor would have picked it up. There was some itching, but mostly, I've had to wear panty liners 3 out of 4 weeks, including my menstrual cycle. This makes me feel less appealing, and much less interested in having spontaneous sex because I have to clean up first.

It just sucks that this has effected me for almost my whole relationship with my husband. Our dates, our honeymoon, our first anniversary vacation last month. All this time, and I find that the only prescription drug I'm on is what has caused me so much stress, sexual tension, and digestive ailment. One can only imagine what all these other happy commercialized medicines have in store for us, and in multiple amounts!

I'm a 37 year old mother of two who is fortunate to work in an OB/GYN office and have different BC's at her disposal. In the last year or so, I've tried Yaz (only stayed on for a month or so and quit due to weight gain and fatigue), the NuvaRing (had yeast infections) and now have just finished my 1st pack of Loestrin 24 FE. I have had spotting all month (enough to use a light tampon), severe mood swings (like a want to tell people off in a bad way!), severe fatigue (want to sleep right as I get home and be a couch potato) and WEIGHT gain (which I HATE!). I am in great shape and wear a size 6-8 but now feel more comfortable in a size 8-10. I know that you should give any BC at least 3 months to work but I don't know if the pros outweigh the cons. Also I did noticed a decrease in sex drive and the drive to want to exercise. I feel horrible after I eat and and feel constantly bloated even when I wake up in the morning and haven't eaten yet. I'm on the fence about staying on this BC.

hello ladies, i'd like to start off by thanking you all for your posts, i read before i started my first pack of loestrin 24 fe so i could see what i might be expecting with starting the pill. i went to the gyno for the first time back in june, i went due to other health problems. for my whole sophomore year i was sick, all of the time, i'm 16 years old, and school is a very important part of my life right now, but with being sick all the time, i was absent a lot. i was absent on each period, as well. my doctor knew something was up so he ordered a blood test, the test came back and my hemoglobin was very low, he had me take 2 iron pills a day for a month then sent me back for another blood test, after the second blood test my hemoglobin was back up, but my iron was still very low. he asked me questions about my menstrual cycle and i answered, they've always been very bad, really heavy bleeding and clotting for the 5-8 days i was on it, very bad cramping as well, and i was very tired, and dragged out while i was on my period, always ended up getting sick while i was on it as well, so he came to the conclusion that i was anemic because of my menstrual cycles, so he sent me to the gyno. mind you, this was my first time being there and i was terrified! haha, she gave me a pap & pelvic exam, then an ultra sound on my ovaries and uterus to make sure everything was normal before putting me on the pills, she put me on them because of the iron that they have in them and to slow my periods down. i'm starting my third week on my first pack of the pills tomorrow, and i for the last 2 weeks i've been very very irritable, the smallest things make me very angry at any time. and have had some crazy mood swings, one minute i'm laughing and happy, then the next i'm crying because i dropped something. i get bad headaches, and i always feel like i'm going to vomit. i don't have much of an appetite, and when i do try to eat, or after i eat i feel like i'm going to vomit. i've also had some cramping and a couple days of spotting, i've had some hot flashes as well, and my sex drive has slightly increased. i feel awkward saying that, haha. but, i'm not taking them for sexual reasons, just health reasons. and i hope that the pills end up working out for me and those health issues. & i hope they work out for all of you, too. :)

I had my Mirena placed 8wks after my daughter was born. I have a history of bad reactions to all bc pills on the market, the patch, the ring and a latex allergy (condoms). I didn't want my man to get snipped yet because I was on the fence about having another in a few years. So I opted for the Mirena because it seemed like the answer to all my problems.
I "tightened up" quickly after delivery and had to be re-dilated for placement, HUGE ouchie! I bled like a stuck pig and soaked thru pads for almost a week after insertion, I called and was assured it was normal.
I had already been diagnosed with PPD at the time of placement so I assumed all the emotional side effects were because of that. Until I joined a group for Mirena users and found that emotional problems were top of the list! My family (especially my relationship with my honey) have all suffered from my short fuse, mood swings, crying jags that can last all day for no reason, anxiety (I have had 3 anxiety attacks in the last 6mnths and never had one before in my life!). I have had constant crippling fatigue and can barely get out of bed! I have a toddler and a 6yo son to keep up with and fall asleep on the couch during commercials!
I've had bloating in my midsection, frequent nausea/vomiting, headaches from hell!, constant aches/pains, shooting pain in my reproductive area, infrequent periods/spotting, acne (face AND body), thinning/dull hair. I had an incident of extremely foul-smelling, thick dark discharge that was caused by the Mirena's stopping of my cycle but not allowing the build up that was present to be flushed until a routine pap. I have also had lots of pain during intercourse followed by bleeding afterwards and that is when I can bring myself to have sex! I'm 25 and have a very low/non-existent sex drive!
My honey is finding out thru his insurance how much a vasectomy will be and if we choose to have another child, we'll just have to have it reversed. I can't live like this, I have kids, I have family and friends that I miss, I want my life back. The only way to get it back is to get the Mirena OUT of my body.

I believe that my friable cervix is from the hormones so close to my cervix that are constantly being released from my NuvaRing. All tests for STDs and abnormalities came back clear. Other than that, I do not have any noticeable side effects.

I had my mirena placed in march of 07 for heavy periods. It has been a little over 2 years. I have most of the same side effects as everyone else headaches, Extreme weight gain, fatigue and back pain. I also have not missed a period the whole time on mirena in fact it has not even helped a bit with the heavy bleeding and clotting.

I made an appointment to have my mirena removed on April 29th. I had a regular pap appointment then when it was time to remove the Mirena my Dr. could not find it. I was scheduled for an ultrasound the next day and they were able to find my mirena at the bottom of my uterus near the cervix opening. I was then scheduled tthe next day to try again to remove it. This process was40 minutes of torture and to no avil. Four days later I was back into try once more again nothing I am now scheduled for Surgery on June 1st to have the Mirena removed, do a biopsy to make sure everything is okay and to have the NovaSure procedure done to stop my Periods.

I will post once I have had everything done. This has just been a nightmare!!

I was wondering.......it hurt like hell when it was inserted. For those of you that had it removed, "HOW BAD DOES THE REMOVAL HURT?" I am afraid to have it removed but know it is necessary.

I've called my doctor and am waiting on a reply from the nurse. I want my Mirena removed. I posted my symptoms on May 8th. I've had mine in for 4 1/2 months.

My symptoms are in order of severity:

*heavy bleeding 3 out of 4 weeks (pads or tampons with breakthrough bleeding and pantiliner 24/7)
*acne on my back, butt and jawline (going to Derm. and using ProActive)
*I've gained 15 lbs in the past 4 months and it won't come off
*headaches
*a sore spot in my spine (I was fearful I had cancer)
*facial hair
*bloating (I look 4 months pregnant 1/2 of the time)
*low libido
*irritable and moody more than usual
*sore breasts

I'm 23 years old and had the Mirena put in 6 weeks after our first daughter was born. The first 2 weeks of having it were fine... other than a little struggle implanting it all was going well. Exactly at the 2 week mark I wound up in the ER with what I thought were a bladder infection, hemorrhoids, and swollen lymph nodes in my hip-flexors. Now none of this has been linked to the Mirena, so it could be a fluke, but none of the doctors could figure anything out! My urine sample was clean, my pap was normal, they couldn't find hemorrhoids, and it was a frustrating un-diagnosis. The doc sent me home with pain meds and a local numbing cream, but using the bathroom hurt so bad I had to bite down on a towel to pee! Taking a poop... HA... I've been putting it off for days because I feel like my rectum will tear open! Has anyone else had any of these things? Maybe I'm just ill with a strange disease, but this site has me curious if it isn't the Mirena!

I have been getting kenalog injections for about 4 years now. I am 38 years old and have been in pre-mature menopause for about 3 years. I just received another shot last Monday and noticed I have been spotting a little bit. My pap came back normal. I have to get more blood work this week. I am growing more and more concerned that this whole "early" menopause may be from kenalog. I have been "freaking out" a little bit this past week because I haven't felt well either. I've never had a problem with weight gain until i started these injections and now I am over-weight and tired all the time. I'm starting to think that this whole kenalog shot is a big mistake.

Well I went to the doctors today and they gave me a regular pap after that they told me I could get up and get dressed I thought well you have not taken that Mirena out yet my doctor came back in to talk to me I told her my side effects she said it had nothing to do with the Mirena and that the people on this site didn't know what they were talking about! Ha I said well Im having all those symptoms and want to have it removed she almost yelled at me and said "WELL IF YOU WANT IT OUT GET UP ON THE TABLE RIGHT NOW AND I'LL TAKE IT OUT" I was almost scared to but I got up on the table and she came back in the room ALONE and got prepared I asked her if it was going to hurt she said no so she told me to take a deep breath and she yanked it out it felt like she pulled my fallopian tube with her it hurt so bad She said there it's out see I felt dizzy for about 10 seconds then started cramping some more but at least it's gone after that she handed me some birth control told me to start it today and walked out the room crazy right? Ill post again in a few months to fill in in how im doing anyone out there considering the Mirena please take a while to think about what you are doing I thought I knew but had no idea!!

I was recently switched from a combo pill (that I have been taking for 12 years) to Nora-BE due to migraines with aura. Since the headaches increase my risk of stroke, as do combo pills - they were required by law to switch me.

Unfortunately, since about two days after switching, I have been having eye twitching, severe headaches, vision loss, cramping etc. The eye/headache problems only start about 1 hour after taking the pill.

I went back to the doctor, who will not switch me back, and suggested going to a neurologist (hard since I just lost my job and insurance), and that I was basically out of luck. She also tried to blame it on pretty much everything other than the pill (allergies, caffeine, stress etc.). Apparently it is better for them for me to have increased risk of stroke from daily headaches (and liver/stomach issues due to heavy intake of pain killers now) than one from combo pills that never caused me any issues. I even offered to sign a waiver, but that did not make them budge a bit.

I understand their liability in the issue, but it is extremely frustrating to have headaches this badly daily, as well as having issues seeing (badly enough I cannot read highway signs). It is to the point where I may have to forgo any sex life with my fiance in order to get off these pills - which won't make him very happy :p. That, or go to another clinic, and go through the whole PAP again, as well as the bill, bleh..

I was on nuvaring for about 1.5 years until I quit late summer/early fall of 2008. I'm 25 and I quit because I always felt "dry" and had no sex drive. I felt like I was just pumped full of hormones and wanted to give my body a break and quit all birth control for a while. Around the time I quit, I began to bleed during sex. Not every time, just "hit and miss", not very much, but one time there was quite a bit. I ignored this for a while and then started looking things up on the net which lead me to freak and think I had cervical cancer. I rushed in for a pap test and even during the exam, I bled (pretty badly) this made my results inconclusive and I have to go back in 3 months after the cells on my cervix have re-grown and they can get a proper sample. I'm less worried after finding this forum, but wondering how many others out there have suffered from the mysterious bleeding during sex? Is anyone still suffering from this after discontinuing use?

Other side affects were weight gain, panic attacks, and major hair loss.

I had Mirena in for a year and a half. I did not make any connection to the way I was feeling and the Mirena b/c my doctors told me there would be no side effects except spotting. In fact, I had several RN's at the time talk so highly of it I felt it a good idea! I work in Gym's for a living for over 8 years now- i mention this b/c I think it is important to stress that I live an active lifestyle and have never NOT exercised.
At first I had cramping everyday- I was on Advil EVERYDAY. I became very tired. I have heard of others not being able to sleep but I was opposite-i would sleep for 10 hours a night if I could get away with it. Workouts became harder and harder since i was so tired all of the time.
When I started I weighed 138. Almost two years later a steady weight gain...I am now 158. Yes, 158! I am 5'5! I never stopped working out or eating right! I could not figure out the weight gain...I kept a food diary and upped my workouts to 5 times per week. I could not get the weight off.
Plus- I could not figure out why my stomach was always distended- I read here that it is bloat. Oh boy did I have that- so embarrassing for someone who teaches a core class to people at the GYM.
I had a low grade depression and serious anxiety about the weight.
My Husband noticed how I struggled and coupled that with the lack of sex (make that NO sex) and something just wasn't adding up....
So, I started to research and found web postings such as these...I immediately called for an appt to have it removed.
That was Monday. It is Thursday.
It was very painful for me to have it removed...in fact I cried on the table and the DR had to comfort me.
My period started right away- not heavy but very light. My doctor mentioned that I have not ovulated in a year and a half so it will be interesting to see how my body responds to the lack of the Progesterone.
I am still very tired and have some of the cravings for sugar but not quite as bad.
I hope and pray the weight comes off and the sex drive comes back ASAP. What is the point of birth control if you loose your desire to have sex and end up in a fat depressed body?
Take it out!

I started with Lisinopril and had severe isolated visceral angioedema. Thought I was going to die. The attacks felt worse than childbirth. Urine flow would totally stop and bladder would cramp. Bowels would not function. Over a 10 on the pain scale. Went off Lisinopril and 3 days later Dr. wanted me to start Benicar. Within 5 days I was in emergency room with visceral angioedema even worse than the Lisinopril. I have had CT scan, ultrasound, numerous blood and urine tests, PAP, colonoscopy and everything is negative. It has taken a full week for all symptoms to stop. I finally feel normal again after 2 months. I cannot take this family of drugs. And Dr.'s need to be more informed about this serious side effect. My Dr. never considered it could be the Lisinopril or the Benicar since I didn't exhibit any facial edema. More information about this rare, but serious side effect needs to be published.

Hi there. I am so glad I found this website too. My mirena was fitted in Dec 2005. Since then I have been on anti-depressants twice. I have terrible mood swings, am constantly ratty with my two young sons and my husband, I feel like I am constantly stressed out and definitely feel like I can't relax. I am always shattered. I feel my heart "tremmoring" quite a lot. My hips and top half of my legs ache most days. I feel bloated quite a lot too, like the feeling before a period, or even slight labor pains. I have a constant vaginal discharge, and have slight bleeding after intercourse. I had convinced myself I had cancer from some of these symptoms, but have just had smear test results and all is fine. So it must all be down to the mirena. The only thing is though I am SOOOOOO scared of having it removed, frightened of the pain and of the bleeding immediately after! I would like to hear from people who have had it removed, did it hurt and was the blood loss severe?

Wow, this site has been very informative. I have had the mirena since May of 2007. I haven't experienced any of the bad cramping, except the first couple of days after insertion, nor have I experienced hair loss or bad acne. My one complaint is that I have never had a yeast infection before having the mirena. I have probably had 4 or 5 within the last 6 months. I thought it was just my body, but after reading this I am considering having mine removed. In the last few months, I experienced vaginal itching and burning. I have used over the counter medications, which relieves the effects and gets rid of the infection, but it seems like after my partner and I have intercourse it comes right back. My last pap was 5 months ago and everything was fine. I know it's no STD and my partner and I are monogamous. The yeast infections are driving me crazy and I'm relieved to know that it's not just me.

Like all of the ladies that posted. I had the mirena put in place 6 weeks after my daughter was born, she just turned 1. I have had nothing but problems. I have not had one period since this thing was inserted only discharge and a odor, which i have never had a problem with. I had to be placed on paxil for depression and anxiety, I have sleepless nights and not because of the baby she has slept all night since day one. I have no sex drive and when i attempt its painful. I am 22 and active and weighed 170 the day i gave birth and in 6 weeks i had only 5 pounds to go to be at my original 130lb pre baby weight..I now weigh 180 lbs. Iv tried all the old tricks, i quit sodas, fried foods and switch to water. i was working out with no response. I found this site last night and called my doctor first thing this morning but im a full time student without insurance and he told me it would be $200.00 which is a lot when your a parent in these times. so i called planned parenthood they will remove it for $ 50.00 and that includes a pelvic and a pap, so i can try a new method. Now that is the student rate but even at regular it is cheaper then the alternative.
good luck ladies, i can honestly say i feel your pain

I have been on Lisinopril for over 30 days. I started getting severe pelvic pain and a routine UA indicated I had an infection as well as blood and protein present. Dr. was worried about bladder cancer. Took sulfur based drugs for the infection and subsequent UA was clear but severe pain continued. Scheduled PAP and Dr. ordered ultrasound. He indicated that uterus was pushed over slightly to one side and indicated it could be fibro cysts. Ultrasound was normal. Dr. ordered CT scan, normal. Dr. wants to send me to gastroenterologist. It takes three 7.5 mg. Vicoprophen for pain to abate for 4 hours. I sat up all night researching and came up with isolated viseral angioedema a very rare and seldom known side affect of ACE inhibitors (Lisinopril). It affects the small bowel. Would assume that small bowel was so swollen that it was pressing on all other abdominal organs, especially bladder, causing pain. Had diarrhea at first then constipation. When looking up isolated viseral angioedema it says that gastroenterologist usually do lap surgeries looking for cause of pain before they figure out that it is the Lisinopril. Immediately quit taking and 3 days later almost pain free. If you have abdominal pain and are taking Lisinopril, cease before undergoing any further testing. It cost me $2,000 to figure it out on my own.
