I began getting debilitating headaches 3 years ago. They were everyday and not the classic headache (no visual, nausea etc). It felt like a jackhammer to the back of my head every single day. My neurologist told me they were migraines. I was skeptical as every other migraine med had not worked. I began on Topamax at 25 mg twice daily. I started at this dose for a month. The body really needs to adjust SLOWLY to this med. My side effects were pins and needles in the hands and feet, strange taste in foods, flat tasting sodas, drastic cut in appetite. My doctor assured me these would go away. Headaches did not start to improve until the second month when I went up to 50mg twice daily. By the third month I was up to 100mg twice daily and I feel like I have my life back. I still will have occasional migraine breakthroughs, but nothing like the misery I had before. Within 5 months or so, food began to taste normal again and the pins and needles stopped. I dropped 30 pounds total on Topamax. It has been a life saver for me!! My advice for anyone thinking about this drug is to ease your way up slowly until your body adjusts. One week on a dose is not enough time.

Okay, I'm 17 and have been taking Loestrin 24 Fe since early February.. This is my first birth control, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.. but so far I can't recall any serious mood swings or crazy depression.. however, I am on my 4th pack or so and for the first time, I have yet to get my period and I am on the 3rd day of my 'reminder' pill.. My boyfriend and I use protection and I have heard that this missed period is a common side effect, but in the mean-time, I'm still going nuts! I'm just a nervous wreck and don't know if I should be.. Is it normal to miss my period this early since I've only been using Loestrin for 4 months??

I took Yasmin for a month to delay my period 'cause I was getting married around the time when my period was supposed to start. So I took it for a month so I can enjoy my honeymoon. Ever since I stopped taking Yasmin, my period has been unpredictable. The 1st month I have my pd for a week (before the pill my period usually lasts 5 days), 2nd and 3rd month my pd lasted 7 days for the first 4 days my pd was very heavy with some sort of clots. On the 4th month I had my period for 5 days, 6 days later I started to experience some brownish discharge sometimes mixed with mucous and blood. I have not been sexually active for 1 month and half, my husband is away. I am loosing clumps of hair every day and now I have to worry about this brownish discharge. And I had a normal pap test last year.......don't know what to do?
oh when I was on Yasmin; I felt horrible...........my body felt heavy all the time, low sex drive, nausea and when taking stairs I get out of breath.
thanks

I had the mirena inserted in December of 07 and didn't realize that I was having some serious issues with this thing until about 4 months after insertion, my weight would not budge, I stayed at 220 for 4 months and I walked 90 minutes a day and am eating very healthy, some weeks I'd lose 3 pds and the following week would gain them right back, this happened for the entire 4 months, I didn't think anything of it until I did some online searching and found many woman complaining about weight gain with Mirena and other horrible side effects. I was having panic attacks and was always extremely emotional, I was also very bloated all the time, my husband looked at me one day and said you are exercising and eating healthy, why does your belly look so big? So, that was it, I knew it was the mirena. He also noticed my facial acne, which I never had in the 7 years he's been with me. I finally had the mirena removed on 4/14/08 and instantly found relief, I mean, when I say instantly, you may think I'm crazy, but it was immediate relief, I felt so much better in a matter of seconds. I did read somewhere that the mirena after it's inserted goes into your blood after 15 minutes so, not sure how true that is, but I believe it, after all I went through. I lost 1 pd in one day after the mirena was removed, and now 5/7/08 I've lost 9 pds so far. Not only was it a relief for the weight, I've also noticed a major change in my mood, I was always cranky and started to get nausea and felt bloated and just miserable all the time, my acne is clearing up, my hair also stopped falling out, which was another problem I had which I believe was a major side-effect, everyone said that it was because I just recently had a baby and it was normal, but after a while it was just falling all over the place so now I'm actually seeing the difference and my hair is starting to grow back in. I'm so glad I had it removed!!

I'm freaking out!!!!!!!!! SOMEBODY WITH THE SAME SIDE EFFECT PLEASE HELP ME....I was on YAZ since the summer and it sucked cuz I'd get my PD every 2 weeks....i finished my last pack on November, took December off and towards the end of the month i had unprotected sex so i had to take the PLAN B pills and three days later i got my pd. so everything seemed O.K.....theeeen i started on this jump off LOESTRIN PILL. I was supposed to have "protected" sex for the first month but towards the end of the month (when i was NOT supposed to be ovulating) i had unprotected sex and i haven't had my PD. for 2 months now....Last month i did a pregnancy test and it came out negative....I don't really have any "early pregnancy" signs....i feel fine but CAN ANYONE LET ME KNOW IF MISSING A PERIOD IS NORMAL? I'm just thinking that switching from a different birth control pill and taking the plan B pills might have messed up my cycle. Thanx.

I have been on Mirena for 2 years at the end of this month. I got it because I am a type 1 Diabetic and I already have 2 children and don't believe it to be healthy for me to have another. I thought it was the best invention ever. Nobody told me that while I never have to worry about birth control, I do have to worry about constant nausea, bloating, extreme mood swings, weight gain, and bad facial skin. Lately here, I've been really depressed because all of my clothes don't fit right, I hate looking in the mirror, and I started going through all the things that might be making me gain weight, and I really don't even know what led me to look up Mirena and weight gain, but here I am, very relieved to find out that I am not the ONLY one to experience these side effects. I was never told that all these were possible, because had I known I would've never opted for this. I intend to have this removed as soon as possible.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in March 2006, 6 weeks after my first child was born. I had it removed on July 26, 2007. At first, I didn't notice any symptoms. I had spotting for a while and then just regular shortened periods after that. My first noticable symptom was that I was extremely fatigued. For the last 6 months I feel that I was living in a haze, very tired, and felt that I wasn't able to function. I felt like I was way older than 31. In fact, a few months ago I was so worried about what I was going to feel like when I was 80. I went to my PCP and she could not find a medical reason for my fatigue after doing extensive bloodwork, so she thought maybe I was depressed. I went to my therapist and she very quickly verified that I wasn't depressed, I'd been seeing her for a year already to work on family issues so she knew me very well. My joints ached and I also experienced arthritic like symptoms in my hands - I could not twist a bottle cap off or open a sealed jar at all. About 3 months ago I started to get chin acne, then it moved up the sides of my face around my hair line and then all over my forehead to the point where it was very painful to touch. I was terribly moody, snappy, and emotionally stressed out all the time. I feel that the last year and a half have been wasted and I wish I could go back and not have it inserted.
After removing the IUD, I had bad cramps and my period came 2 weeks early. Blood was heavy, dark, and clotty at first (alot) and now is just medium flow, but bleeding for almost a week now. I've also had lower back pain since it's removal.

I've been on simvastatin for about 8 years - recently increased to 20mg pd. Side-effects seem to match up very closely with other posters. Back and shoulder pain, often quite acute. Pain in left side under ribs. Various stomach pains and a general feeling of being unwell. Recently had treatment for trigger finger on right hand.
I'm fairly certain that the longer one takes this medication,
a/ the side-effects gradually get worse and
b/ the side-effects last longer when you stop taking the drug.

Blueberry-
I suggest that you speak with your doctor (although my doc will not admit to the correlation of the symptoms that I had and my being on Yasmin). The hot flashes may get worse (mine did) as you take more Yasmin. You may develop other symptoms as you take more pills.
Please refer to some of the posts below in this forum. Yasmin does some serious things (havoc) to your system.
I am waiting to have my second pd since stopping Yasmin. Since my pd is getting closer, I am having more hot flushes/flashes and am much more anxious and shaky.
I took Yasmin for about 5 months, then off for a month then on for 8 or 9 more.
Gina - YES, I am still lightheaded and dizzy! It only lasts 1-2 seconds, but it is there. I too gave up both the occasional glass of wine and Diet Coke to "detox" myself. Seems like it is helping a little. I am not back to myself, not even close. I guess that the Paxil CR is helping too.
I am seeing a nurse practitioner this Thursday. Let's hope that she has some answers for me. This has been a nightmare for me. I just KNOW the Yasmin is to blame, it HAS to be.
Take care everybody!

Hi everyone,
I too had BP of 140/100 (or MORE) when I was on Yasmin. My face was extremely bloated - looked like I had 3 chins and a very round face. My hair fell out in clumps when I was on Yasmin - now my hair is fine and I don't "shed".
After quitting Yasmin, it took a few weeks, and the facial bloating was GONE! When the doc saw me she said "half your face is gone" :-) My family cannot believe that my face looks so different.
My BP now is 110/80 average. I do not take BP medicine and I do not take BCP any more.
My chest pains are for the most part GONE!!! They really had me scared.
I am on Paxil CR 12.5mg once per day for the extreme anxiety that I have which I attribute to taking Yasmin for about 9 months. I also have trouble staying asleep at night. I have observed that my anxiety is peaking when my pd is due.
I had an anxiety/panic attack on Dec. 21, 2005 and I took my last Yasmin in late January 2006.
Thank you all for your informational posts and concern. I had a few minutes so I thought I'd post an update.
PS- I think that the manufacturer better read this site and DO SOMETHING!!!!

Nakie,
That was one of my first symptoms. It sounds like we experienced the same thing. This feeling would hit me at any time, not at one particular time of day.
They progressively got worse until a full panic attack hit me in December 2005. I thought I was having a heart attack or something. My blood pressure skyrocketed.
I am off Yasmin ONE MONTH today. Unfortunately, I am now on Paxil CR 12.5 every morning. I also had to take Xanax as needed for panic/anxiety. It was much worse during my pd.
I still have a racy heart every so often and small bouts w/situational anxiety. My BP is still elevated and I see my internal medicine doctor every few weeks to monitor my medicine.
I am in my mid-30's and I NEVER thought this would happen to me. I was always so in control of everything.
Hajnalka and Nakie---I commend you for getting off of the Yasmin. Do not restart without asking your gyn (see my previous posts). Good luck to you. Keep posting to let us know how you are doing.

UPDATE.....
Hi everyone,
My pd started yesterday after 2 days of light spotting (1st cycle off Yasmin). I went to the doc yesterday and told her that my anxiety was terrible in the early evening. She switched me from Paxil CR 12.5 in the AM to Paxil CR 25 in the evening. She also wants me not to take any more xanax unless my anxiety is extreme. I also need to try yoga and an exercise routine (try that with 2 little kids...)!
My chest pain is still there. She listened to my heart but feels that the pain is related to the anxiety that I am feeling. She will see me in 2 months. My BP is 140/100. The cardiologist did not send the reg doc the results of the 24 hour BP monitoring. My heart is racy and I am a bit lightheaded (maybe from my pd??).
My left shoulder pain is now gone. Every so often I get "warm" feelings in the tops of my arms- has anyone else felt this?
I think that the doc (internal medicine) is now starting to see a correlation in the Yasmin I took and the condition that I am in. I can't say for sure, but she noticed an amazing difference in me in 3 weeks. I hope that I can continue on this path to full recovery.
I will NEVER take another hormone.
SILKE- You are right, I will NOT consider MIRENA!
One thing to mention.... I took Yasmin for 8 months, went off for 1 cycle and restarted for 3 months. The last 3 months (Oct, Nov & Dec 05) I was on the Yasmin were living he_ _!!! I advise you that if you stop Yasmin, DO NOT restart unless you speak with your doc and are convinced that you are OK. The pharmacist thinks that the stop/restart thing really did a number on me.
As always, thank you everyone!
Denise -- thank you - hugs back to you too!

Hi Lisa-Thank you so much for asking....
Here is my post-yasmin update.....
My pd started very light today and I had a very anxious night last night, hopefully related to PMS. I have been taking the xanax at night and paxil CR (12 mg) in the AM and I am seeing the doctor on Friday and will know about my BP monitor results then.
I am trying to avoid the xanax but the anxiety is pretty bad these days. This is my first cycle off of yasmin.
I took yasmin for 6 months, stopped for one month, and then again for three months. I think I really did some hormone damage to myself. I am off of caffeine, artificial sweetners (which I loved) and all alcohol (never took much anyway). I lost about 11 pounds this month since stopping yasmin. My face has alot less swelling and puffiness.
My vision is a little blurry.... any ideas????

I am due for my pd tomorrow (my 1st cycle off yasmin) and my palpitations and anxiety are much worse than they were last week.
This is all soooo scary! I hope that my cycle returns to normal now that i am post-yasmin.
The anxiety this weekend and today are pretty bad. I have to see the doc on Friday.
Has anyone else experienced more intense symptoms when they are due for their pd and are on month 1 post-yasmin???
Good luck everyone and thank you!

Hi everyone and welcome to the ladies who have recently posted for the first time!
My chest pains & shoulder pains are now getting less frequent and my anxiety attacks are also a little less frequent, but not gone by any means. I think that the Paxil is helping along with the Xanax at night. I am worried about my 1st pd since being off of Yasmin, I hope I don't get PMS.
This is a long road for all of us and I am glad that we can read each others' posts.
I read the posts about the FDA complaints that you reported. Could you PLEASE let me know where you are making these reports. I would LOVE to share my side effects and how I am trying to recuperate from the poison that they call Yasmin.
AEB-- I had my second daughter in May 04 and started Yasmin about 10 months ago. I can relate to all that you are saying. I never thought I would be on Paxil or Xanax, but I think it is helping me. God willing I will be off of all meds within a few months. Good luck to you!

My anxiety is back, but not as bad. I am due for my pd on Tuesday and this is my first cycle off of Yasmin after about 10 months.
I am taking .25 Xanax once per day and Paxil CR in the AM.
Do you think this anxiety could be "PMS"? I am lightheaded a little as well.
I have had a stressful week but I used to deal with it so much better prior to Yasmin.
Thank you all for your posts.....

Thank you all for your posts. I swore that I was alone in this. I am taking my last Yasmin in 2 days. I will finish the cycle.
Today my heart was pounding and I could not get my heart rate under 150. I have pains and I am dizzy... The day I got my pd, I had a migraine! I never had this before.
I am so scared that this will be like this forever. I am sooo leery about trying MIRENA.
I am so dizzy right now, it is no joke.
Please keep posting everyone. Thanks again!

I have been off Lipitor for 1 year and I am not better, but worse. I have muscle problems in my left arm and leg. I can hardly lift a 10 pd. weight without shaking. I also have pins and needles at various times and my breathing/speech has been affected. I believe I have Myositis.
Lipitor is a drug from hell. I take Polycosanol instead of Lipitor.

I am a single mother of 2 children, I wanted to quit smoking so my doctor said to try Bupropion ER150MG for a 1 week and 3days The first week it was 1 pill a day then 2pills from there on out. The affects hit me the second day it has helped with cutting down on smoking and it makes them taste very plain and nasty. I have these systems/side affects already>feel slow, dry mouth, horrible taste in mouth, food and sodas taste nasty food has nasty taste as well and headaches first week. Very emotional ever since I started taking 2pills, just a thought and I would tear up. Like today this morning I was emotional and around 1o'clock I was Bitchy and irritable. I feel drudged honestly. Totally not me I only get emotional when on my period and Bitchy hardly ever! Sleep well lets say I wake up a couple times every night since I have been on it period. I am a deep sleepier too. I have no clue on what to do if I should give it more time or tell the doctor I'm done? I just want to quit smoking with something thats not going to affect me like this. I have no anger problems or anything like that just smoking. I am actually under weight for my age I don't know if thats why it has affected me so quickly 5'5 and weight 107-109 26yrs old I have not been eating as much as I usually do and have a high metabolism and I seem that I have gained a pd or 2. Don't understand I just think it's mess me all up. I waited an hr or two later to take my next pill tonight and I felt so good like myself, I will also say it seems to leave my system within 9 to 10 hrs it suppose to stay in your system for 12hrs but not me. If anyone can help me on advice feel free to email me please ******Thanks Mel
