Irregular menstrual periods, muscle cramps in pelvic region, lower abdominal pain, vaginal dryness, vaginal discharge, vaginal odor, frequent urination, pain with sexual intercourse, breast tenderness, no libido, weight gain, fatigue, acne, skin bumps, dry skin, change in skin texture, headache, migraine, depressed mood, anxiety, and mood swings.

I had my Mirena IDU inserted in October of 2007. It was "the best thing ever", at the time. I initially bled for 5 months, just a light bleeding, but bleeding non the less. The discharge has never went away. During and even after the bleeding stopped- I started having an odor. I had NEVER had an odor of any kind down there before. I failed to realize that my skin issues that started a month after insertion were related, as well as the headaches. My husband was in Korea when I got the Mirena, so it wasn't until he came home on leave that I realized the pain with intercourse, vaginal dryness, and breast tenderness. The acne, no libido, depression, anxiety, mood swings, weight gain, and fatigue started about 4 months ago. Today I woke up with horrible cramping. I will have a mild cramp about once a month for a second, but none so sever as today. In doing my research I have found that all of the problems that I have been having are linked to the IUD. Granted, it could just be a big coincidence. I'm still calling the hospital on Monday morning and making an appointment to get it removed. That's if my pain doesn't go away and I make it to the ER first. I'll keep you ladies updated on my "recovery". Good luck!

Hi! I am 23 with two kids. I got pregnant with both of them b/c we were just using condoms and slipped up a couple of times. I chose the Mirena IUC because i didn't want anymore surprises! I have had it for about 14 months, since Aug. of 2007. I had it inserted 7 weeks pp. I was informed by my doc that there would be some cramping that would minimize and probably be gone over time. I knew that there were some serious side effects also, but i was lead to believe that they were very very rare. So, ive had many things going on in my body that, as most of you did, i contributed it to being older and my body changing after having two kids (16m apart!). Some of my symptoms have been, sharp, piercing pains on either side of my pelvic region (i assume thats my ovaries), and also dull, cramping that comes on slowly and intensifies and radiates to my lower back. Almost as bad as labor pains. My stomach is always bloated, i too look like i am about 4 months pregnant. I am extremely fatigued all the time. I can't sleep at night. I wake up with night sweats and even when i do sleep i am still tired. I haven't gained any weight, but i haven't lost any, seeing as how i was only 7 weeks pp when i had it inserted i am still not back to my normal weight. I have gone to the gym every day for months and took up running which i hate, only to see no results! My hair is falling out in the shower and when i brush my hair. I thought this happened because i stopped my prenatal vitamin because it happened with my first son, but i'm still losing hair. I have terrible headaches. I probably get one or two a month. I use to have maybe one or two a year. I am very anxious and nervous all the time. Sometimes more than others. I have always been worried about germs but now i tend to go overboard. I know i'm doing it but i can't help myself. I have really bad mood swings and i realize it when they're coming too but its so overwhelming i just have outbursts! I have very frequent yeast infections and i had never had one before. For a long time i didn't know what was going on. I have a lot of discharge also very irritating! I have absolutely no libido. My poor husband begs me and then i cringe the whole time. I've never been like that before. Anyway, when i came across the website and read all of these posts that were exactly what i was going through i knew it was the Mirena! I called my doc. and i'm having it removed on the 26th! I cannot wait! I am so excited that i can look forward to feeling myself once again after thinking this was the way it was for so long. I am just sad that for 14 months i've lived my life in a fog, and not been as excited about life as i could have been. By the way, i know a lot of you guys are going to be looking for other birth control whenever you get this one taken out, but make sure you read some reviews on it too because i thought about yaz and nuvaring, but they seem to have reviews that are almost as bad. I want to be me! The way i felt when i was 19 before i ever had kids. I want to have fun! I say NO to any extra hormone running through my body. The condom will have to do for me, and my husband and i have vowed to use it the way we were suppose to be the other times we got pregnant. If i do get pregnant, its is what the Lord had planned for me and my family and i'll look at it as a blessing. Besides being pregnant is way better than feeling like this.

I had my Mirena put in Feb 08. I heard wonderful things about it from other women I know who have it. So, I gave it a shot. Wow. I had wonderfully clear skin before the Mirena. Now it is so embarrassing. I get huge pimples all over my chest, my neck, and my face. They are so painful. I have spent so much money on face cleaners and what-not and nothing has worked. Within a week after getting the Mirena put it, I was in the ER for unbearable pelvic pain. I had developed large cysts on both of my ovaries. It was awful.I still get the lovely sharp pains in my pelvic region that will at times make me double over. My periods last a full week now and I can have 2 periods a month (everyone who has it told me they don't even get periods anymore...what gives?). My breasts get so tender that any touch sends me through the roof and outing on and taking off my bra is so painful. And the WEIGHT GAIN. I had just 40 lbs of pregnancy weight and finally started feeling good about myself again. I get the Mirena and I have gained 15 lbs. I am bloated and disgusting. I look 4-5 months pregnant. I feel horrible. I have no health insurance right now and I don't have enough money to pay out of pocket to get the Mirena removed. As soon as I get back on track, I am definitely getting this removed. I can't stand what has happened to me. I look and feel utterly disgusting. :(

I suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I have problems with painful joints and have fluid on my knees. I tried Aqua Ban to try to relieve the fluid on my knees. I started by taking 2 tablets x 2 times on the first day, I was fine. The next day I took same dosage. In the afternoon I started feeling unwell. I went to bed as I had terrible tummy pains, felt sick and went downhill quite quickly. The next day I felt worse and had cramping pains all day. I stayed in bed with a hot water bottle. I had no energy at all. This went on for 4 days and eventually I ended up with a pain in my pelvic region. I can only think that the Aqua Ban had such an affect because of the chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia? Has anyone else had an experience like this?

I had Mirena inserted in March of 2007 and, after an x-ray today of my pelvic area, have discovered that it has migrated through my uterine wall and into my pelvic region! I was not aware that this could even happen, and now I'll have to have surgery to have it removed! Thanks a lot Mirena!!!

i am older than most of the women here. I am 49 (yeah turning the big 50 soon) and was having very long and heavy periods with extreme irritability and moodiness. The worst symptom though, was the cramping. So my doctor suggested NV and gave me two free samples. I just came home from vacation and ripped the second damn thing out. I have been spotting non stop. My entire lower pelvic region feels like it has been invaded by a version of the alien (Sigourney Weaver style), the cramps are continuous and unrelenting. My libido has gone from "not now" to "don't even think about it....ever".
I have been trying to soldier on but I don't think we are supposed to suffer like this.
I am trying to accept that my period will come and never go away. I will have continuous cramps, will never want sex again and will be irritable and angry all the time. But I was doing that all by myself so who needs the damn Nuvaring?

Read my symptoms first; at the bottom it will tell you how long I had the IUD and the time line of the symptoms.

constant pelvic discomfort
(sometimes to the point where Advil usage doesn't even help)
("zaps" or "pings" of pain...light lightening bolts)
almost constant bleeding
(sometimes with clots - in differing sizes)
(coloring can be bright red to burgundy and brown)
(odor from the bleeding is very noticeable)
immediate weight gain
(this includes severe abdominal protrusion)
(I belly dance, & the costume I had just worn 2 weeks prior to insertion no longer fit)
severe swelling of the extremities
(hands usually do swell in hot weather, however, I've never had my feet and lower legs swell up like this - I had elephant feet/legs)
immediate acne issues
(my skin is always clear except for a few during my period)
moodiness
brain fog
(I'm a bookkeeper, & I noticed an immediate problem with my making stupid mistakes or taking longer than normal to resolve usual issues in this regard)
clumsiness
(could be attributed to the brain fog)
breast tenderness
(feels like someone's constantly squeezing/poking them)
movement of the IUD
(I could feel that it was out of position; it was more on my right side and caused ALOT of discomfort)

Here's the kicker, ladies. This was all within 1 WEEK of USE.

I demanded removal of this nasty thing & the GYN office refused.
After two more weeks of hell, I insisted, & they finally removed it.

This is what I experienced AFTER the removal:
Immediate relief in my pelvic area, BUT, still having pelvic pain.
INTENSE bleeding & clotting. To the point where I bled through my clothing at work (yes, I was using tampons & heavy pads).
The GYN's office didn't seem concerned; they said this was my body's "normal" reaction. (yeah, right). I finally stopped bleeding a good 5+ days later.
Even more breast tenderness.
Weight gain/bloat has not gone away. (I'm quite active)
Still experiencing brain fog.
Acne is starting to dissipate.

I have a ****** Group set up to shout to the world about this horrid device; look for: mirenajustsayno

Report your experience directly to Mirena; they have a contact # to report an "Adverse Reaction". From there, file a report with the varying health organizations.

On another note, I also had several ultrasounds done at the GYN's office prior to the insertion. The DR stated I had no ovarian cysts, no fibroids, BUT, my uterus was overly large. I sounded at a 10 as opposed to the usual 8. I was told it didn't matter, that I was a good candidate. He also stated that I had "a little endo".
(The reason for my use was to control the heavy bleeding during my period, along with the severe cramps.)

Well, I had some ultrasounds done at the hospital late last week, about 10 days after the removal of the Mirena. This is the result:
irregular complex cyst on my left ovary
unusually thickened uterine wall (no other explanation other than it was thicker than average)
It was noted that the series needs to be repeated.
(I'm assuming they want to look deeper)
Note that I have not resolved whether or not there was any perforation from the IUD moving out of place; the GYN never ran an ultrasound to verify it - they just did a regular exam & told me "it was still in my uterus". (that exam initiated severe bleeding for several days as well)

Good luck and let me know how you're doing!

And, yes, I do have several friends that LOVE their Mirena.

Has anyone experienced a bloated pelvic region? I swear I look like I am pregnant and it started when I began the NuvaRing. I have also been extremely tired and unable to wake up in the mornings. I was wondering what was wrong with me and I began to be really hard on myself about it, so I am glad to hear that others have had similar symptoms, and this could be in fact a symptom of the NuvaRing.

I am taking Doxycycline for recurrent prostatitis. I have to take 100 mg twice a day for 14 days. It's definitely the worst antibiotic I've ever been on, though it does seem to be generally effective. I'm on day 10 now and I have been on two previous 14 days courses of doxycycline so I have a fair amount of experience with it.

Here are a few things I've learned:
Do NOT lay down after taking Doxy. Don't take it right before bed. You need to be upright for about an hour prior or you will almost certainly get heartburn. Also, take Doxy immediately after eating. When I don't take it with food, I become nauseous and occasionally throw up. So those are the two big ones. Eat before and stay vertical after.

In conclusion, part of the reason why it has such frequent side effects is that it is a very powerful antibiotic. Often, I think, the side effects are worse than what its supposed to be curing. I can't wait to be off it. Good luck to everyone.

This site is like a moth to a flame for me.

I took my damned ring out a week & a half ago after finding this site & reading so many testimonies & side effects I could have written myself that it wasn't even funny. This makes me so mad that a freaking pharmaceutical product could make so many women this sick without being recalled. And what the heck is wrong with all the doctors not being able to tell any of us what was causing all these problems?

In the fifteen months I was on NuvaRing I have seen every type of doctor you can imagine. Including TWO neurosurgeons who wanted to do TWO different types of surgery on me. BOTH docs sent me for MRI's of my pelvic region/lower back & KNEW I was on NuvaRing. I mean, I know it was CLEARLY right there in the middle of both the results of those MRI's!

So why did it take me finally figuring it out by using GOOGLE?

I've had chronic lower back pain (diagnosed degenerative disc disease in JUNE), severe pelvic pain & cramping (diagnosed pelvic inflammatory in JANUARY), UTI's turning into kidney infections that were so bad I went to the emergency room in APRIL, another UTI & kidney infection in JANUARY, not being able to sit or stand for more than a few minutes without severe pain, leg pains & weakness that two neurosurgeons couldn't figure out WHY they were happening, anxiety, depression, terrible temper, severe fatigue, headaches, stinging painful feeling in my vagina, high blood pressure (that has to be treated with expensive blood pressure meds now) etc etc etc.

I can't believe my husband has stuck around through all of this. When they say the first year of marriage is tough, they weren't joking around huh? The person that said that must have used the NuvaRing their first year of marriage too.

Please, if you are thinking of using this product or are leery to stop it - JUST TAKE THE THING OUT! and DON'T USE THIS PRODUCT! It's just not worth it to feel this bad for convenience sake. Not even slightly.

PS - For those of you who want to say something like "Oh it works for me. You just had a bad reaction."...

That's like saying just because some people don't get cancer from cigarettes that they are still a good product.

I started the NuvaRing in October..since then I have constant breast tenderness and pains in my pelvic region. After inserting a new one each month I feel a burning sensation inside. I wear contacts daily and since starting the NuvaRing they have become intolerable to wear. The first month I used the ring, I bled for 4 weeks straight. I have also gotten nauseous in the morning when I'm working out. Have thought several times I was pregnant and taken tests that have all come up negative.

Has anyone else experienced the discomfort and eye irritations?

I have been on Vytorin for several months. I had issues, but didn't think it was the drug, like tennis elbow. Now two days ago, I have had severe muscle pain from my lower back to the tops of my feet. I've had to take vicodin for the pain so I can sleep at night. I stopped taking Vytorin and only pray that the pain will go away. I have read many websites that say the pain may never go away due to damage to the muscles. I can't believe this. I am suppose to have surgery to have my ovaries removed due to pain in my pelvic region, now I am wondering if it's Vytorin causing the pain. I have also experienced headaches for days, blurred vision, severe sleepiness all day, painful hip joints, irritable to name a few.

I started Nuvaring in March 2007 after a hospital stint due to my IUD. I had the IUD for several years after the birth of my last child and then I developed PID and it had to be removed. I had always been against hormonal birth control for a few reasons. 1. My mother died of breast cancer and 2. I had a strong reaction to the Pill. But, feeling desperate for a reliable form of birth control left me with very little to choose from. My family was complete so Nuvaring was the next best thing to the IUD. Big Mistake! I should have followed my instinct because for the 6 months on it, my life was a nightmare. I had terrible mood swings, nausea, breast tenderness, pain in my pelvic region, numbness and tingling in my arms and legs, zero sex drive, headaches, sleeplessnes, cold sweats, hypertension, elevated pulse, sleepiness, and 15 lbs of weight gain. There are more side effects, but these were the most dominant and I had had enough. I took it out 2 weeks ago, before my period was scheduled to start, but I just couldn't take how I felt anymore. I am starting to feel more like myself again but I am really frustrated about the weight gain and wonder if it will drop off or if I am going to have to work twice as hard as before to watch my weight. I would love to hear anyone else's experiences once off of Nuvaring. All I can say is 6 months was much too long. It just wasn't worth the side effects.

First off, I am a 50 year old male. I had a kenalog shot a few months back for severe pain in my right pelvic region due to "several degenerative discs and arthritis in my hips". The shot did little to relieve the pain. I found this sight, just from curiosity, after getting the shot; and it scared the hell out of me when I read off all the problems people are having with Kenalog. As for myself, I have had No Side Effects. I certainly will NEVER allow myself to receive another Kenalog shot, however. I just hope there is something else out there for the pain as it has now spread to both sides of my body; and I can't keep taking Percocet.... Hang in there people. I really feel for you :o)

I have been on yasmin for two months now and could tell the first week of the first month that I had became extremely angry at everything. This could almost be described as rage. This abated by the second week but then nausea would consume me and an achy body - particularly in the pelvic region, lower back, and legs. I chalked it up to the flu. Additionally, I experienced night sweats (big time) and something akin to anxiety and "jitteriness" - almost like having a caffeine overload ALL THE TIME. The second month I was on yasmin, my reaction was identical. Rage and anger and now here I am, feeling like I have the flu. I am so incredibly achy and have severe nausea. I, too, also seem to have some effects due to dehydration and I am peeing constantly. I am stopping yasmin as of right now - particularly after reading these posts. I was wondering if the fact that yasmin increases potassium levels had something to do with all of this. Now I REALLY wonder. I will post again once I determine how things go while off of yasmin.
