I have been looking into the side effects (mainly safety concerns) of NuvaRing when I stumbled on this site. From all the info I've read, it's a pretty high dose of hormones. I have actually had the best luck from NR and have been on it since it came out in 2001. (I will be 29 this year) Also, I only have my period 4 times per year. (Love it!) I understand that this drug causes many problems for women but I have had a long history of hormonal imbalances, yeast infections, UTI's (caused by yeast infections, seriously) and this is the only drug that has helped me long term. It has vastly improved my mood, I have had significantly fewer yeast infections and am very happy about having my period less often. I am pretty active and eat a healthy vegetarian diet, but I feel much better when on NR. Perhaps it is better for women like me who have pre-existing hormonal problems. ?? Also, for what it's worth - Organon (the maker of NR) made the birth control pill that I responded best to before NR. If you have problems with NR, you may want to take a look at the type of hormone used and stay away from it as some other BC pills & patches do use the same hormone as NR. Best of Luck!

I've had positive and negative side effects. The positive are I've had awesome sweet booty time since I've started the ring, I haven't gained weight (I've gained as much as 50 pounds on other birth controls just to lose that weight when I came off), less body hair, and my anxiety has pretty much cleared up (I've been taking a low dose of zoloft but have pretty much quit since I've been on nuvaring, except I'll take half when I start to have withdrawals).
The bad side effects are cramps (but those cleared up for me), a longer period (4 days, which isn't bad, but my normal period is only 1 to 2 days in length), headaches (which I've been getting every day), some mild nausea, lethargy, and I've been getting pimples all over my butt region!
I can't decide if it's worth it or not. I really like the pros but the headaches and super tiredness just aren't much fun.
Oh I've been craving sweets like crazy, too!
But, so far, Nuvaring has been not too bad for me. If the headaches don't ease up, I'm going to try pop's again and if I still have problems there, then I may try basal body temperature. Anybody know how effective BBT is?

I am on my seconded pack (month 4) I have endo and thought it would be awesome to only have my period 4 times a year. To my dismay, I've been spotting for the past 2 months and counting. I had a full period about 3 weeks ago and had hoped it was ending and the spotting has continued! I don't want to give up this far. I am SO hopeful that it will stop, but I am really losing that hope. Also, I have cramping still (maybe from the endo) and feel like an emotional wreck!!! I do NOT want to go back to having my regular periods... they were really heavy and severely painful, but this is really getting old fast too! I am 34 and am thinking that maybe I should just go talk to the Dr. about having a hysterectomy. I don't have children and don't think I'll ever have any anyways. Im older and am not in a relationship, so maybe I should just take the plunge?! Help!

Has anyone had extreme heavy bleeding/clots after having the Mirena removed? This is day 3. The last time I had such heavy bleeding I had just had my son. When do you start to worry about the bleeding?

Well, I am so glad that I read these responses. I have had the absolute worst headache for 1 week now. It is miserable. It is on the right side of my head and goes down behind my right ear. I have even been so concerned about it that I had a CT scan of my head done. It was a pain like I have never had before. I was on the NuvaRing for two weeks and when I went for my yearly, after complaining of the headache, she yanked that sucker out. I have still yet to start a period 4 days after the fact, and welcome it with open arms. Hopefully when this hormone is out of my body, my so called "hormone induced migraine" will leave me. Lortab doesn't even subside the pain. UGH>

SO HAPPY to have found this forum. I had been having ALL of the symptoms already mentioned here, except that I actually lost weight(maybe from the stress the damned little demon was putting me through). Anyway I had been searching various health sites about all this stuff, and just on a whim decided to google mirena side effects because I did not remember there being very much listed in the brochure or much mentioned by my obgyn, but because I was so foggy headed all the time, thought I may have forgotten something....well as you all know, none of this was brought to our attention prior to insertion and I actually googled Mirena b4 having it put in, and never found any info like this. That was in May 07...so I got mine out April 9th, 08 started my period 4 days later, and still fluctuating between heavy down pours and spotting after 6 days. ?'s for anyone who had theres out....how long b4 you saw improvements on problems....especially acne, moodiness and my worst thing has been excruciating joint and back pain every day....but I want to know about any of the symptoms and how long b4 they got better. Hang in there girls and give yourselves a big pat on the back for dealing with this mess and having the courage to make your voices heard. Thank-you for listening.

I have just finished 2 months on Femcon FE. In the first month I experienced alot of acne and noticed I was more sensitive and emotional than normal. I am currently on vacation and unable to enjoy this time. I have been sad, emotional and easily worried (basically freaking out and having crying fits). I started my period 4 days ago and have been very depressed and down in the dumps which is not normal for me. I had no idea why I was feeling this way and a friend suggested I research my BCP.I have found some comfort in knowing other people have experienced these types of mood changes also while being on Femcon FE. I have also been extremely nauseous and haven't been able to eat anything. I have decided not to start my next pack this sunday and hopefully will feel better...

I received a shot on the 21st of march and was told by my dr that the side effects were minimal and I have now been on my period for 18 days straight called my dr and they said thats not normal call your ob dr. Now that I have found this web site I see that I am not the only one who has had this problem. I have always thought it was a dr responsibility to worn you about side effects like this but I guess NOT. And to top it all off the shot didn't even work for me I am stili in alot of pain in my back. THIS SUCKS

I am 21 years old and have never been on birth control before. I went to the doctor asking for yaz but she suggested i didn't take it because of the high level of potassium it has. I wanted yaz because i get severely depressed right before my period. But when i told the doctor about my cramps she suggested Femcon FE. So i said sure why not! I've only been on it for 2 1/2 weeks and I've have breakthrough bleeding for the past 3 days now, and i woke up 4am with the worst cramps in my entire life! i was in so much pain i vomited! finally i was able to sleep...and when i woke up i called the doctor and she said she could write me a prescription for the cramps, but i said no since they went away. Also I've never been so depressed! and this is coming from a girl who has fought depression for years. I'm on my spring break now and i don't want to do anything but cry cry cry! i feel bad for my boyfriend and my mom having to deal with me. Even I'm getting annoyed with myself! I had high expectations for birth control, i thought it would change my life and help out with PMDD. I really hope this changes, I'll let you know what happens cause I'm going to stick it out for the next 3 months! If anyone could suggest another pill just in case i still hate it in 3 months, that would be very helpful!

hi,sorry to hear about all the problems you are having,i too had problems with controlling my anger,i would snap and snarl at my family for no good reason or i would be in floods of tears and wanting to die. i stopped taking yasmin mid pack with no ill effects except that i got a 'period' 4 days after i stopped the pills but that didn't bother me as much as the horrible side effects i was having from taking the yasmin. your moods are directly linked to your hormones and your serotonin levels, bcp's can have quite a big impact on these. stop taking the pills, drink loads of water, take a good multivit and also add some extra magnesium and calcium, hopefully once your own hormones take back over and your body repairs your rage issues should subside, mine have. you just really need to be good to yourself and your body and you will see an improvement. best wishes to you, hang in there it will get better.

My Gyn told me to try this new "great" pill. It was Yasmin. So I tried it for two days then I realized I didn't research the pill. So I started to research it and I stumbled upon this site. After reading everybodys posts I decided to stop taking Yasmin. Since I stopped taking my pill after only TWO days of being on it, Ive had my period 4 TIMES in the last month and a half!!! WTF!!! That is too much for 20 yr. old to handle!

Has anyone had this happen? The 'blank pills' week is hell week for me. The mood swings are almost unbearable. My poor boyfriend didn't know what to think until I finally narrowed it down to these new pills. I'm in 'hell week' of my second pack of pills and am trying so hard to be patient and give it the full 3-month trial.
I was on Ortho Novum 777 for 14 yrs then my HMO decided to switch to somthing very similar, chemically, but I had these wild mood swings with that and so I went to my dr, told her it wasn't working for me and she prescribed Yasmin, told me to try and if it didn't work for me, that we'd switch me back to Ortho. So other than the 'hell' week, Yasmin is actually working out for me, my sex drive is up, my energy is up...just hate this week.
After reading some of the above posts, however, I see that I can probably just skip the blank pills and just take the active pills continuously, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. Would I ever let my body have a period? I've seen some postings that say they have a period 4 times a year?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. aiownk@yahoo.com

HAS ANYONE HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE WITH MIRENA??
before my mirena i always had VERY regular periods. every 30 days for 4-5 days. when i had my mirena inserted in the 2nd week of june, i started my period 4 days later on time (the 15th). however, it lasted 14 days! 2 weeks later on-time on july 15th, i had another 12 day period. since then NOTHING. does this sound normal to go from two super heavy periods to nothing?
since missing my last period (almost 2 weeks ago) ive had an out of control appetite but have only gained 5lbs and im extremely fatigued yet have a hard time falling asleep.
