Long story short. I got mirena 5 weeks after my twins were born. At first I had spotting for the first couple weeks, then it stopped. From there my libido was decreased significantly and I was becoming more and more tired. I attributed this to my anemia. At first after having the babies (Before my mirena) I was losing weight and beginning to be able to fit in some old clothes. In two months I gained ten pounds. I have been working out and eating healthily. Eventually acne started springing up on my face, I began to look like I was pregnant again (Weight just in my lower belly), I got so dizzy I'd have to pull over while driving, and my fiancee and I were constantly fighting as I kept lashing out at him for no reason (I am normally quite peaceful.). And then I got migraines daily and started hating my body...OH! And since day one I could feel exactly where the mirena was in my body. It hurt constantly. My period was two weeks late and I was constantly cramping.

I felt sick everyday.

But I got my mirena out two days ago. I told my doctor my symptoms and he looked at me like I was crazy. As soon as it was out my cramping was gone and I got my period. I have a little more energy already and have been able to control my mood swings. The verge to cry all the time? Gone. I was never told about all these possible side effects so there's no way it was in my head. Hopefully I start losing my baby pooch and things look up. My advice? Save yourself the trouble. I didn't even get into how I found out later that it can perforate your uterus and get lost in your body.

I just wanted to let you all know whats happened with my experience with mirena and having it removed! I started looking at the forums because I was concerned with the depression i was having then I saw all the other things that I didn't connect to my mirena but realized it was from that. The fatigue, nausea, bloating, weight gain, depression, infections, moodiness,no sex drive, etc, etc. I went to my doctor, she of course said it couldn't be the iud like all the others but I still made her take it out. That was a week ago today, I looked for so many sites to see if there were posts about how well people do after it is out and there isn't nearly as many as the symptoms so I wanted to add some hope to those who are wondering if getting it out helps. IT DOES!! The mirena is great for birth control but my body did not do well with it and the side effects were not worth it for me. Some people love it so its worth a try for yourself if you do have insurance to cover it. Anyway I got mine out last week and in this week i have already lost over an inch off that little "pooch" in my belly. I have more energy, feel happier, my husband has noticed a difference too. I feel normal again. Its great! If you are having symptoms, listen to your body, not your doctor and try with it out.

I got my Mirena removed two weeks ago after seven years of carrying it around in my uterus. I had horribly painful periods before (like vomiting and fainting from the pain horrible), so I was glad to be rid of that.

What I'm not glad about, however, is the thick black BEARD HAIR that I've developed (which returned after expensive laser treatments), losing about a quarter of my previously thick hair (now I have to wear extensions to appear somewhat normal), and walking around for seven years with acne, a pooch that had me constantly pregnancy testing, hoohoo odor that sometime persisted despite bathing AT LEAST daily, and oh, the wonderful gas, bloating, and bowel irregularities that caused me constant anxiety in the tiny, quiet house I live in with my boyfriend.

Then there is the chronic pain for the past two years that they can't find the cause of - could this little miracle have anything to do with it?

I've brought these things up to doctors, all who knew I was on Mirena, and was always blown off. But it's obviously related, along with the my eyesight now being that of an 80-year-old, my very own snowstorm of dandruff no matter what I wash with, and, quite possible, the depression that no medication makes a dent in. None of which I had before Mirena came waltzing into my life.

Here's hoping for a return to normal now that it's out, and perhaps a lucrative class action lawsuit in the future that nets us each at least enough to get electrolysis and a hair transplant.

I THINK WE WERE DUPED!

Is anyone thinking that the drug company knew all of this, and therefore has been marketing specifically to women who have just given birth... this way, the postpartum symptoms are the scapegoat:

bleeding
cramping
hair loss (very common 3 months after.. I believe I lost more than most)
insomnia (very common after delivery due to motherly hormones have
you on high-alert))
No sex drive (because we're either breastfeeding, hormonal, or just feel
fat)
Mood swings (because of our ever-changing post-partum hormones)
depression, crying (must be Post-Partum Depression!)
Joint pain, back pain (we're carrying our new baby around too much)
Bingeing and Food cravings (we're home alone and bored or
breastfeeding)
No sex drive (we are bitchy, unsociable, depressed, feel overweight and have no energy.. I'm surprised they still want to have sex with us?!!)

I got the Mirena put in in October 2007. I had just lost all my post baby weight and was feeling GREAT. then I immediately gained 20 lbs. I tried EVERYTHING to lose it. I went to extremes...power walking 5 miles a day, going to fitness classes, lifting weights, bicycling up hills, playing soccer with my kids. AND eating very healthy, small portions, minimal fats, no starches, or sugars, no eating out ever. NOT ONE POUND moved. What is so weird is the way the weight came on. It is all concentrated in this perfect little round bump on my belly making me look about 4 months preg. I can tell there is a lot of water there and I retain water terribly. I bloat all over so badly by the end of the day, I have to unzip my pants (even though I barely eat). I went to my doc thinking something is wrong and she assured me it wasn't my IUD but my age!!! After reading these and other posts, I was amazed to see SO many other symptoms I have been having since Oct. of 2007 that I Never attributed to the Mirena!!! My breasts hurt, my energy levels are up and down. I have had a terrible time emotionally, handfuls of hair falling out, NO SEX DRIVE, (don't have acne), irritable, depressed, impatient, headaches, complete space cadet, inability to make decisions, etc. All this since the Mirena was put in. I TOO want my body back and my SELF back!! I have an appointment in TWO Weeks from today to get it out and I cant wait!!! This can NOT be healthy!! I will report back to you and let you know what happens.

I've gained about 10 lbs gradually since January despite the fact that I started training for a marathon running up to 20 miles per week. I eat fairly decent and while I believe some of the weight is muscle, I can't explain the sudden pooch (not pregnant) and love handles I've grown. I always feel bloated and very anxious. I hate this pill.

I am going to tell you of my experience of being off the Nuvaring. I took it out 6 weeks ago. I got on the ring before my wedding last july. I used it for over a year. I had no experience with how sex was w/o birth control. I didn't know it wasn't supposed to be painful & burn after! The final straws for me were 10 lbs. gained in the last year that would not come off, despite serious dieting and working out 5 days/week. Extreme irritability, inconsistent with my nature, and constantly flying off the handle over little things. The nasty stuff always clinging to the ring when taken out wasn't too pleasant, either. D: Tingling in my legs when working out, migraines, all that jazz.

I was hoping the weight would fall off by now, but it has not. A few pounds lost as I have gone down a full cup size and my hips are shrinking to their original size. (btw, I was 115 at 5'6", now 125, and gained it all in my curvy areas, with a nice lil' pooch on my belly).

The other side effects left within 2 weeks and have not returned. My husband, who is skeptical of me contributing so much to the ring, did comment on how I smile more and am happy all the time. it's true; I am so much happier.

I have more energy and am able to fall asleep easier. I used to freak out at my husband and lay awake for hours with anxiety.(isn't that dumb?!) haven't done that in 6 weeks.

And lastly, I finally want to have sex. :)
thought something was wrong with a newly wed like me...

I had it inserted after my second child (she is now 3-1/2). It took 6 months to NOT feel it anymore. I have not had my period. However, at the time of the month, I get all the side effects. Is it b/c my body doesn't release the blood? Twice I have felt tht thing poking me to the point where I could hardly walk. I have a pooch which won't go away, headaches, dizziness, ab pain off and on to the point where I bend over to feel better. I am making an appt to take this dumb thing out. It is not worth it. My breasts get extremely tender too. And sometimes during sex, it pokes me and hurts. Its not worth it. All of you have confirmed it.

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!

Last night I bought 2 new shirts, was completely disgusted with my stomach and mid section. I had went to the doctor about 2 weeks ago for a cold, and when I was weighed, I had gained about 10 lbs in a month. I am completely disgusted with my stomach. I had a pooch down there since having my baby, but she is 19 mos now and since I had it inserted in April, I feel like a growing marshmellow. Sometimes I cant stand to even have my husband see me change clothes. Im about 195 lbs now...almost my PREGNANCY weight and I hate to get it taken out now since I just had it put in - in April. Also I have NO SEX DRIVE. My husband complains about it constantly and Im so tired all the time, I'm always saying how I could fall asleep. I keep attributing it to having a 19 mo old and working full time, but she sleeps through the nights now and I'm always tired. I've also had several dizzy spells that I can not explain. I'm going to keep reading these comments and it seems like I may have found what my problem is! Thanks for the help. I should have done my research before I went through the pain of having it put in. That would have been smart right?
