I am a Ph.D. psychologist. I began to have nuscle jerks and weekness on Lipator, so I stopped taking it. Several months later, my doctor started me on Pravacol which he said was about half the dose of Lipator. After 6 weeks, my legs, especially, and my arms have begun to twitch again. I am contacting my doctor tomorrow.

After taking Lipitor for over 6 years and it was controlling my cholesterol, I was taking 60mg Lipitor. I began to get a terrible burning in my toes creeping up into legs, stomach, breasts, arms and hands, face, tongue, mainly at night in the wee hours of the morning. Insomnia. Burning urine, faeces. rash in groin area, yeast infections. I came off of Lipitor after having these side effect for a year and a half as the doctors refused to believe that the Lipitor was causing my symptoms.
Side effects disappeared when I came off, not totally but gradually going. Put back onto 20 mg Lipitor after many tests showed that my cholesterol was very high again and research team suggested I be on 80mg Lipitor. Specialist however, on my insistance, weaned me back onto Lipitor by giving me 20mg, which brought my cholesterol back to normal, ( Note that the same results were achieved by a much lower dose), proving that I was being overdosed. After being on just 20mg Lipitor, the burning returned but the specialist said that it was keeping the cholesterol controlled, so he would suggest a drug that people with Parkinson's Disease take, to make me sleep and not feel the burning. I took myself off of Lipitor altogether. The burning was disappearing again. I don't have Parkinson's, so why should I take a drug to mask my side effects. At present I am taking 250mg niacin and 10mg Pravacol and the burning has returned. I feel as if these statin drugs are going to KILL me. I have to get another appointment with my doctor, but at this point I am scared of the medical profession as they do not seem to know what to do and I am at high risk. I want to mention that I had rheumatic fever as a child and cannot take large doses of any medications. Nobody will listen to me. My overall cholesterol is 7.5 JU Ontario Canada

I am scared to Death!! Was on Zocor for 5+ yrs. Knee , leg pain and numbness til finally in Jan. 2002, my knee "folded" and went down and fractured my ankle badly!(7 screws and a plate) Was in hosp, 10 days,3 in ICU( anesthesiology overslept me) and when I woke up enough to know what from what, had NO feeling in either leg from the knees down. Long story short, I am one of the 1 in 100,000 who developes peripheral nueropathey from Zocor, plus was on Verapamil for ^ bp, which has just recently been found to be a no -no! Went off all for about a year and then started on Zetia. Not working, cholesterol is 262 and my Dr. has put me on Pravacol, another statin!!I will be most attuned to my body for any signs of knee pain, increased numbness (not completely feeling again, esp. feet) etc!! I am a 55yo female whose Father had a stroke at 58. I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard spot!!:(

my side affects from statins (Lipitor) have been muscle pain in my legs and back. I also get aches in my knees and elbow joints. When I stop taking Lipitor, the aches dimish. After 4 weeks they are almost gone. If i go back on lipitor, even as little as 5mg, the side affects gradually reappear. i also take Zetia, it seems to have no side effects. the good news is my total cholesterol has dropped from 160 to 104 and my LDL is now 46. I also drink and eat a lot of soy products and take 1000mg of niacine a day. Before Lipitor, I used Pravacol and had similar side effects. I will know in another 4-8 weeks if the light headedness i have had for the last 4 years goes away.

I don't take Lipitor but I do take Pravacol and Zetia together. They are statin drugs. I take 20mg. of Pravacol and 10mgs. of Zetia. I am so glad I was sent this info from other people. I just know that since taking these drugs that I have experiened extreme pain and stiffness in both shoulders. Went to orthopedic dr. and was told I had forzen shoulders. Since reading all of the complaints from other people, I am inclined to believe that it is coming from these drugs. I can't sleep at nite due to the pain and soreness. Been thru physical therapy and cortizone shot with no relief. I am 50 yrs old and feel like 80 sometimes. I was always very active and I just don't want to do anything anymore. I just make myself do it. Thank you all for this info. I hope I can reverse this whole ordeal. Debbie ***

Lipitor, pravacol and zocor have the same effect on me. They are, swollen ankles, palpitations, dizziness, chest and stomach pain and nausea. Once I was hospitalized for a few days while tests were taken. The stress test had me running uphill on the treadmill. When my legs were about to give out, they decided it was not my heart. I have not been watching my diet, and my total cholesterol went up from 165, to 185. Doc wants me to increase zocor to double the dose. I don't want to do that. I'm 70 years old, work out and swim on a regular basis with no chest pain. Any suggestions??
