I am 26 years old. I've been on warfarin for almost eight years. I wish I had seen a site like this eight years ago when I started on warfarin (after DVT and P.E) I may have had some insight into the hellish two years that were to follow: hair-loss, depression, weight-gain. But I attributed all this to stress (it was pre-med varsity and I was under a lot of pressure academically).
Anyway, now my life is more settled, I eat right, exercise furiously 5 times a week...but I have digestive problems. Bloating, gas, overall discomfort in my stomach almost every night. I've cut out milk, wheat, coffee...nothing.
But tonight I started thinking...could it be the warfarin?
Does anyone experience or know about possible side-effects of warfarin on the digestive system, and does anyone have some useful advice????

My daughter had just about every reaction mentioned above. She was being treated for an acute flare of SLE (Lupus in the worst form.) Not only did she lose her kidneys (19 yrs old, second year in Pre-med at Baylor University. She began seeing strange "black ghosts" while in CCICU. The nurse talked to the Doc, he says oh, its only "ICU Psychosis". What??? She wasn't hallucinating, just strange vision. The came the pressure in her head. No one bothered to call in an Optho, so they did Lumbar Puncture after Lumber Puncture. They released us with the pressures still high. Suddenly, my baby sat up and said "Mother is my right eye open?" It was...I jumped into action, got her to a local doc who sent us running to Houston...my daughter lost all of her sight in her right eye and most of it iin her left, she has no peripheral vision or color in the tiny bit of vision she has. The depression is killing her. Her doctor says "yeah, it happend...200 out of 1000. Can you imagine..all he had to do was has a doc use his little light,look behind her eyes and my precious daughter would be simply waiting on a kidney and then back to medicine. Please don't let this happen to you or a loved one...insist that they call in an eye doctor. Our lives will never be the same.

I am a 19-year-old female pre-med student who has been taking this nasty drug for exacly 1 year now.... The amount I am on continues to change, for my disease keeps returning and leaving remission. I finally get down to 10mg from 40mg, and have to go back up when symptoms return!!! This is SO discouraging. The worst part is, no one understands the physical and emotional agony this drug brings on. I'm 19 and feel like I'm 90. My body aches, my weight is constantly fluctuating, I bruise from simply being poked (being a clumsy person, I look like I am beat!!), my bones feel as if they are about to break, and I am SEVERELY despressed. Being in college and taking rigorous classes, this is just too much for me to handle anymore... My 5-year relationship with the love of my life/best friend is falling apart because of my horrible mood swings.. don't blame him for leaving. I feel as if this drug has ruined my life more than the disease itself...Does ANYONE know if one's body and mind returns to "normal" after FINALLY being off this drug??? I pray to God the answer is yes... I would appreciate someone's reply and/or insight, because my Dr. fails to tell me about ANY side effects until I mention something. PLEASE REPLY!!!

To my fan fare;

Guest, #12328

"U have to be an idiot to write things like that to people like us who r really suffering because of pred. Obviously u have found the wrong website. Now go find yourself a SHRINK."

Thank you, blatent insults obviously show superior
intelligence and mental stability.
Far be it that anyone post a question or point of view based on their own experiences or independent thought that just might not "follow the crowd" so to speak.

ericgoberman,
"So Jules, 5 mg a day for a few weks and you're the expert ?"

Just so you know, I have taken as much as 60 mgs a day off and on throughout my life.
My daughter was on life support for almost a month due to asthma/pneumonia and was given 500mgs of prednisone a day.
I have sincere gratitude to prednisone for helping her survive.

And most importantly, psychosomatic DOES NOT MEAN IMAGINARY!!!
"Psychosomatic denotes a PHYSICAL DISORDER that is caused by or notably influenced by the emotional state of the patient. The word "psycho" comes from the Greek meaning breath, spirit, soul, mind. "Somatic" refers to the body, or "soma" in Greek, referring to the physical."
Soma in biology refers to the body of an organism.

To all those suffering from the horrific side-effects and those that were offended, I sincerely apologize. I should have re-worded my post.

Where I was coming from;
I could literally post hundreds of studies that show the reality of the power of mind and the power of suggestion alone on the side-effects, healing, and survival of hundreds of people.

During my 3rd year in Pre-med, many of us students started having chest pains, arrythmia's, perfuse sweating etc....guess what we were studying at the time????

While I applaud reassuring others that they are not alone in their side-effects and suffering, I personally feel that there might be certain individuals, like me, that are just starting their drug therapy that might be terrified or dissuaded in taking it because of some of the posts here. (I had a terrible time even swallowing my whopping 5 mgs.)
And yes, I even personally believe, and I repeat, PERSONALLY believe that reading about terrible side-effects of any drug can trigger the placebo effect, or side-effects that can be psychosomatic.

ALL DRUGS HAVE SIDE-EFFECTS!
For me; What it all boils down to is; the risks of any drug versus the benefits....ie...chemo has terrible side-effects, but what are the profound effects of the disease without it??????
