I have a 9 year old son who has been on Singulair a couple of years ago, he has significant asthma. The last year and a half, my son has had difficulty concentrating and now since depression with suicidal ideations, he was started on Zoloft in December. I am going to have to address this immediately with his doctors.
He has had trouble sleeping, eating, uncontrollable crying, and symptoms of PTSD.

I posted in November about my two year old son. He's been off of the Singulair for two weeks now and is doing GREAT! About 4 days after taking him off he started sleeping again! He started taking his normal naps again and sleeping through the night. It took him about 6 days for his nose to clear up and for him to start breathing well again. He also started eating again. He has been SO happy the past few days and I can tell he is just feeling good.
Again, thank you all for sharing your experiences. I feel it has saved my precious son a lot of pain. Thank you!

Our 3 1/2 year old son has been in the ER or hospitalized for respiratory illnesses complicated by asthma since he was 7 months old at least every 6 months. Last October, his doctor prescribed Singulair and a miracle occurred. He rarely required albuterol (which has interesting side-effects of its own). Last May, we came to a mile-stone. One of the side-effects of Singulair as noted on the prescription pamphlets are ear infections. Our son experienced his first of four ear infections in his life. During the summer, our early talker began to stutter severly. Always cheerful, peaceful, and amiable, he began to display extreme aggression, including hitting, complaints of feeling angry and sad, and destructive use of his toys, which he always cared for in the past. Anxiety began to plague this little boy, to the extent of dramatic displays of hyterical tears over being away from my husband and I, even when he was with his best bud, his grandmother. A child who loved to read and play quietly for hours could no longer stand his old activities and his attention span dramatically dropped.
With the observations and suggestions of family and friends, my husband and I began to monitor and look for what we may be doing differently to bring about such frightening changes in our precious son., to no avail. We ceased to use of Alburtol in August, with no noted changes. Two weeks ago,
our little guy came down with a cold. Having used aromatherapy for ourselves for years and considering our boy's age, we decided to try Citrus limon (lemon) and Eucalyptus radiata. We ceased the use of Singulair for the durations, for fear of contraindications. To our absolute amazement, our son began to return to us. He went back to his favorite activities with the attention span before the onset of the symtoms discussed above. His stuttering decreaased by 90% and he no longer expressed sadness and anger, but spoke of smiles and laughter. The aggression seemed to us to cut itself by half. At the end of the cold, we resumed the Singulair and within 12 hours, he began to stutter severly, began to pound on his toys and to continually express sadness and crying. On Nov 4, we discovered this website (thank you !!!!!) and we were in his pediatrician's office on Saturday morning to discuss removing M. from Singulair. He has been off the medicine, except for one dose last Wednesday for two weeks now. The stuttering is 90% gone, he can now be comforted and redirected if my husband or I are out of the room, he expresses a desire to socialize, and his aggressive behavior towards others and his play has decreased by approx 75%.
Just a couple of additional thoughts:
1. Has anyone done any medical research in regards to dosage of this medication and the young? Surely 6 months of blissful relief from asthma and ER visits is worthy of attention, but does the dosage need to be more closely monitored and considered for the young? Too bad I am not a research scientist.
2. If you are considering trying aromatherapy for the first time, may I suggest that you be sure to consult with an Advanced Clinical Aromatherapist. Our FDA does not yet monitor the quality of Essential oils used in our country, nor does our gov't set guidelines for training aromatherapists. The Adv Clinical Aromatherapist we consult with is trained out of Europe where these oils are used medicinally, as prescribed by physicians. My 21 year old son was a healthy, very handsome 5'10"tall and 220 pound body builder. He was a hilarious man with a great heart and the love of my life. He became addicted to xanax 4-6 bars a day. When he tryed to get off, my big precious son was sobbing like a baby, so afraid he coulnt beat this drug. Well xanax slam dunked him into the ground and killed him. I wish I had known more about the struggle he was having with xanax. It can get you in a strangle hold you cant get out of! BEWARE!

Thank God I took the initiative to find this web site! As a Registered Respiratory Therapist, I can say I am absolutely floored by the entries I have read! The following will make some absolutely gasp with fright because of the age, but my 4 year old was started on advair 2 months ago. He has exercised-induced asthma and we needed some maintenance therapy started so he could "play" with his friends at preschool. Just this past week, he has now become hoarse. I couldn't understand where the problem was coming from because he had no fever nor runny nose, etc. Well, just so happened that this morning, he ran out of the diskus. Now, this afternoon, the hoarseness is slowly going away! That's the end of Advair, I just hope we can find a solution. Looks like it is back to the old trusty albuterol inhaler. Please parents, don't start your children on this medication! Funny thing is, I was very hesitant about this medication to start with and actually got on the internet reading all the information I could about it before administering it. As I go back into my practice ( I now instruct), I will definitely share all the stories I have read with physicians, students, and fellow co-workers in the medical field. THANKS to all who entered a comment, you may have just saved my precious son's life!

When I saw this story on in the news I could not believe it. My 9 year old has been taking this for 2 years and has had all of the problems I have read with other children. We too were told it was add or ocd or bipolar or some other
medical term. Never once was this one and only medication questioned.
I cried when I realized I had been torchering him with this allergy pill.
He has been off of it for 4 days now and says he " feels like a brand new me"
He is happy, fun, interested in everything and no more headaches or stomach pain, or depression.
Please take your child off of this medicine if you are not sure and contact your MD. Listen to your child and your instinct as a parent.
