I have posted a couple of times previously about negative side effects, i.e. migraines, weight gain, acne, chin hair, eczema, lower back pain, no sex drive...and the list could go on. As a mature 36 year old woman I have educated myself over the past couple of years and can really only attribute all these issues to having the Mirena inserted 4 months after the birth of my daughter 3 years ago. Although at this time my doctors will not openly acknowledge these side effects, I am confident that one day they will. I encourage women to report adverse side effects to the FDA. It onlt takes a minute or two. Who knows, it may be the hormones or it may be the silicone plastic? It has to be something. It should also be acknowledged that some women, my very best friend for one, have had wonderful experiences with the Mirena. I really think it may just depend on the woman and her own body. I am having mine removed tomorrow after researching all of this for about 8 months. All I can say is, thank goodness. I am also scheduled for the Essure(permanent birth control). Food for thought for the older women in the group. Whatever each of you decide, realize you are not alone and you do not have to continue to feel the way you do if you believe that the Mirena could be making you feel so bad. Take care.

I had mirena inserted after 2 months after having my daughter, and i was hoping this would be the best birth control ever. BUT i never thought the side effects would be soo bad! At first the insertion did not hurt one bit, but hours later i had severe cramping to the point of not getting out of bed. The cramping lasted about 3 days, and the spotting for about 3 weeks. I did not wanted to get it removed because i figured it would take a while for my body to get used to it, (and b/c i paid 500.00 for it). Here i am almost a year later and i have pregnancy symptoms having periods for 11 out of 12 months. Constant nausea, horrible cramps on each side of my stomach, zero sex drive, and bloating. I am going to make an appointment b/c i am scared that i may have either an eptopic preg. or an ovarian cyst.

Had mirena inserted 2 mo ago. Loss libido immediately, but liked the fact that I have had no periods the last 2 months. Then, the last several weeks I've felt like I did when I was 5 months preg. with my son who is now 9yr. old. I have gained 14lbs in a month, have breast tenderness and I'm lactating. I'm nauseated, craving sugar, salt, and very thirsty. I went to the Dr. this morning who told me it's nothing to be concerned about. I seriously feel pregnant, but have taken 4 tests that come back negative. I've just gotten my narcolepsy, depression and anxiety under control and now this? Has anyone else lactated as a result of Mirena?

I had Mirena inserted 6 weeks post pregnancy with my second child march09. since then i have had horrible mood swings that i cannot control my poor fiance has put up with a lot. on top of that i cant seem to loose the baby weight, with my first pregnancy there was no problem. but for me the worst side effect which is not listed on the re website is hair loss. I know its common to loose a little hair after preg. but im loosing a huge amount i look look like i have a reseeding hair line. i am going to have it removed Friday. my only concern is other form of bc did not work for my inc the pill and the patch. i am very fertile it seems and am not ready for baby number three. this seemed like such a great idea but had they told me about the hair up front i never would have had it inserted.

I have had my mirena since June 2004. I've told a zillion people how great it was & how I want another one 5yrs from now because it is so great. Here is how my story goes my second child was born the last of May 2004 with a cleft lip & palate. In the first 6mo he either had 3 or 4 surgeries never sleep & still trying to pump breast milk to feed him. I go Nov 2004 to the Dr with panic attacks, anxiety, depression, they wanted to admit me & I would not let them. The looked at me & said your bipolar take your meds. I am still unable to take my kids in the movie theater or drive long distances in the car by myself . Feb 2005 I gained 45ibs always wore a size 3 in clothes but now then a Size 13! Took diet pills off & on to lose that. I now weigh 124 but my stomach always is bloated to where I look 3 or 4mo preg. summer 2008 till now I now double up in pain & tears it fills like laber pains, extreme mood changes worse than every because I'm on a mood stabilizer & it doesn't seem to help much, Very bad back ache, hands & feet always going numb, headaches. always tired no energy, I feel bad because I've been really angry with everybody around me & I feel that know one understands. I 've be going from doctor to doctor but for 6mo to try to get a answer. Even my husband noticed something must be wrong because I'm just not myself. I had just came up with I'm getting Old & falling to pieces even though I'm just 29yrs old. I go see a gyn today & I'm telling them to remove it now. The joy of life has been took from in the last 4yrs & 9mo. Please don't let this happen to you no the risk early

Hello Ladies. I was a mirena SUFFERER for 3 1/2 years. Had all the symptoms including hair loss. Terrible drug. Had it removed in sept 2008. Just a heads up girls, If you dont want kids get another form of bc right away. I am now 5 weeks pregnant again. LOL we did try the vasectomy route for my husband so you can imagine our surprise when we got the news. LOL Mirena was the worst thing to ever happen to me and my family but there is light. After almost two months my hair loss is down and my acne is almost gone. Joint and back pain gone. Mood so much better i feel like a new person. And you can get pregnant again.LOL So chin up girls. Always listen to your body and decide for yourself, but for me getting it removed was the only answer. HOWEVER, one note. After removal the risk of ectopic preg is much higher for the first year. Be careful and if you do turn up prego again make sure you discuss with your ob/gyn and get an ultrasound as soon as possible to be sure of location of the fetus. Good luck ladies.

age 48 - after having no period last summer into fall and then suddenly it returning full force with no end in sight I had numerous scans that found my ute the size of a five mo. preg. and multiple fibroids. Really not in the mood for a hysterectomy I asked my doctor what other options I had. She did a D&C and Mirena placement in the hosp. end of Nov. '07. Things were fine for a few weeks and then the spotting began. I spotted all the time and could never go without wearing a pad. Now in my 7th month of giving it the so called TIME to thin out my ute lining, lighten flow etc. I am having it removed tomorrow morning at 8:30 and scheduled for hysterectomy pre-op July 11th. Here is the never ending list of crap I've had to deal with since I had the Mirena put in:
Mood - horrific. High then low... no in-between.
May 22, 08 - current heavy bleeding with cramps and spleen sized clots.
flow stoppage for 24-36 hours only to gush and return full force at will.
ovary pain both sides
upper leg pain
massive wt. gain = 32 lbs
swelling/bloating
extended stomach from under breasts to pelvic bone
June 12th, woke to spinning room.. day I called to make the appt. for removal.
burning sensation left ovary region
acne ear to ear chin line - extremely oily face
headaches
shakes
sweats in air conditioning day/night
full bladder sensation 24/7 with more freq. trips to the bathroom
less bladder control
Guess that about sums it up... I am sure it is a combination of menopause onset and the Mirena. I will be able to gauge better the few weeks I am Mirena free before I have my bag of fibroids removed. At the very least I expect the acne to lighten up and hopefully some wt. LOSS.

I have had Hashi now since 2000, i got it when I was still in high school. They though that was rare that this would occur at such a young age. No one in my family had it, well not quite yet. I was the first to get diagnosed. My gyn mentioned that there is a link between autoimmune and preeclampsia. I had a terrible preg. I take synthroid now well the generic. And I do not feel much better at all. But people who use Armour should be careful. My endocrinologist strongly disapproved to this. It is Pig tyroid. This is from a site "The prevailing opinion is that everyone converts all the T4 needed into T3 automatically, and that drugs such as Armour and Thyrolar are outdated and old-fashioned at best." Also does not mention much on Hasimoto patients like myself. I would like to try it though to feel better. The side effects are higher as well. Esp long term.
Unfortantly, what works for one, does not always work for another person. So though some have problems with there synthroid others do not. Also it takes a while for you to notice a difference with this. IF you take it regularly at the same time and follow instructions on eating as well as not take it with vitC then you should be experiencing something. If not then you really need to get a new endocrinologist. Regular doctors are not made to deal with these issues, though they try, you need to see a specialist. Just remember that you know how you feel and if Synthroid is not working for out then change.

I have had Mirena since July. I went through a lot of life stress this past fall (moving to a new city after 10 years, being separated from my bf during this time for two months, etc) but I really think Mirena is not right for me.
I am bloated all the time, my periods are erratic, I am more moody than usual and I have NO sex drive. Worst of all, I think I'm pregnant ALL THE TIME. I just don't trust this thing and I literally drive my man nuts worrying about being pregnant. I also have developed some pimples (like on my back, upper arms, etc) that I never had a problem with before! I have gained a few pounds as well.
I feel like a putz spending all this money but I really want it out. I feel like I should "give it more time" but really, what is the point?

When a class action lawsuit is filed, let me know....this drug should be taken of off the market immediately. We started all of this with an OB/GYN that prescribed this “miracle pill” and now have had to go not only to our primary doctor, but also a psychiatrist, gastrenologist, college campus counselors, psychologists, psychiatrist, and the campus medical doctors; All the while, accumulating enormous doctor bills. All the doctors say, "No, Yasmin won't cause those problems" (except the college campus doctors..wonder why? Hmm.. could it be that they are not in private practice?)....well, I beg to differ. Everyone needs to give this website to their doctor so the doctors can hear from the patients that have taken this drug, and not listen to the pharmaceutical companies that are pushing this drug to be the "miracle pill". Maybe if enough people complain and go to the media, we can get rid of this drug!
My daughter who is 18 was put on Yasmin because of irregular periods, hormonal imbalance, etc. We were told it was the new “miracle pill”. It will make you loose weight, regulate your periods, clear up acne, you name it, it will fix it. Yeah, right.
She started taking this pill in March 2007. She was off at college but called to tell me she was experiencing horrible headaches, behind the eyes. She complained about her stomach hurting, but we just figured it was the stress of freshman year at college. Then she said she got where she couldn’t eat when she went to a restaurant. When she came home in May for the summer, I noticed a total personality change. For example, she was always a neat freak, and now she wouldn’t clean her room. The first day when she drove home, she started crying she was so mad about the traffic. Yes, she has always had a little road rage, but this was ridiculous.
By June, not only could she not be in crowds, like at a restaurant, but now she is having full blown panic attacks and IBS. We called the OBGYN and they said, “Yasmin won’t cause this, go see your primary doctor”. I knew that the only thing that had changed with her was taking the YASMINE. I knew it had something to do with all of this so I “Googled Yasmin” and this website (http://www.medications.com/se/yasmin) was the first one I looked at. All of her symptoms matched everyone else’s! I am so glad we found this website, it explained everything and I had her to stop Yasmin immediately.
So we went to the primary doctor, explained about the Yasmin and how we thought it was the culprit of everything. Of course this doctor also says, “Yasmin won’t cause that”. We told him to look it up on the internet and see how there are over 3000 complaints on this drug, more than any of the other drugs on the market.
Besides the emotional problems she starting having, her pulse and blood pressure was sky high, so he puts her on medicine for that, and puts her on an anxiety medicine and sends her to a psychiatrist. She is very thirsty all the time, and develops IBS. She can’t eat without having pains in her stomach. So, now we’ve have gone from having just irregular periods, to all of the above, plus a psychiatrist.
The psychiatrist doubles her medicine (and puts her Pamine for the IBS) because the panic attacks are gone, but she still is having a lot of nervousness, anxiety, can’t sleep at night, crazy thoughts, worrying all the time, etc. A month later he changes her medicine again, to Effexor. The first 2 weeks, she does okay, but the packet doubles the strength after 2 weeks. It takes 4 weeks for it to take full effect. Right after she doubles this medicine, it is like her senses are on hyper-mode. She can taste everything that is in her food (chili powder, seasonings, etc…), taste the metal in water, and she can hear someone’s phone vibrating, in another room.
Then she goes back to college at the end of August 2007, and it’s horrible. The Effexor is having bad, bad side effects. We called the psychiatrist that she was using at home and he doubled the dose. That was the worse thing they could’ve done. The side effects were worse than ever. I had her to immediately go to a psychiatrist on campus. She told him the whole story and he believed her! Needless to say we switched doctors. He then lowered her dose back down to ½ a dose and hopefully can slowly get her off of all this medicine.
The newest thing she has developed is being hypoglycemic. The campus psychiatrist sent her to a campus medical doctor and he told her that they would get to the bottom of this. He tested her for everything under the sun. Low blood sugar is the only thing they found. But, she hasn’t taken the Yasmin since May. No telling what the results would have came back like if it was done at the time she was taking Yasmin.
Thank goodness she has counselors and doctors there at the campus that believes that Yasmin can cause all of these problems, and are working with her. From what I have read from the people that have used this medicine, although most doctors do not agree, Yasmin takes like 6 months to get out of your system. I think I am going to believe the testimonials of the people who take this medicine, over a doctor who prescribes it.
If everyone goes to the media, their doctors, the FDA, congressmen, and make them aware of these horrible effects, surely we can get this drug off of the market! Does anyone know a class action lawyer that would pursue this? For my child to have to go through all of this is ridiculous, not to mention costly. What do we know of the long term effects this drug will have if it is doing all of this when you first start taking it?
If you have the same concerns as me about this drug, and would be interested in looking into a class action lawsuit, please email: ****** I would be interested to see how many would want to pursue this.

My wife has been on N.R. since Nov. 06. Like other people here, her first side affect was a lost sex drive. Before she started it, she wanted sex close to every other night, shortly after starting N.R. it slowly decreased to once a week if I was lucky. Her and I both blamed it on the stress of planning and paying for our wedding. However after the wedding it only got worse. Her sex drive was gone, and her periods started to go away. Over the course of 3 months her periods went from a full week to no period at all. We took several preg. tests, and all of them were negitive. We tried calling Nuva Ring, to talk to them about the problems, but they were so sure of their product, that they told my wife she was pregnant. Well we finaly decided to just take the ring out (only 3 days after inserting a new one) and see when happened. About one week later, her period returned and her sex drive is slowly incresing. - a happy husband

Thank god I'm normal! I plan to call the doctor TOMORROW to come off of this medication.
I'm breastfeeding my son, so it's difficult to find a "safe" pill to use. I tried the mini-pill with lots of side effects. Have been on Yaz for 10 days, and as I read through all of the posts I realize I've had side effects I didn't even know were side effects!
The most troubling has been the anxiety. To have a panic attack while nursing an infant in the middle of the night is not a good thing. Especially the loss of control knowing that if I pull him off for my own comfort, he will probably become frantic. My anxiety level during the day has been ok, but I've been on Prozac for depression all along, which may be keeping me somewhat even.
Other side effects: insomnia (last 3 nights I've been up till 3 in the morning), extreme muscle aches, nausea in the morning (feels like morning sickness, but def. not preg!), dry, itchy skin, lack of libido and aversive to touch, even in a non-sexual way.
Oh, well...time to try another. Hopefully my OB/Gyn will not give me a hard time.

I have been having this unbelievable sweating at about3:00AM that keeps me up from then until 6:00. I thought it was this new mattress we bought, but it suddenly dawned on me today that it may be the yasmin. I had a terrible shoulder pain that I thought was bursitis and now have absolutely no interest in sex...Before I went on I had been very interested. I also am experiencing that lack of interest in anything. i just want to be by myself and am not happy. Although I went on to prevent a surprise preg@ 40 and to help control major bleeding I am beginning to feel like it's not worth it. But after reading all these letters I'm terrified to go off!

I have been on the "pak" for four days of the seven now. My joints & asthma are MUCH better, but at a cost. I went balistic in the license branch today! It was scary for even me. The only reason the cops were'nt called was that thank God my adult daughter was with me, and got me out of there. I was shaking and my face was blood red. This can't happen again. I have NEVER done anything remotely like that in the past. Either my doc writes me some tranqilizers, or I am off this crap! We had discussed making preg a routine drug for me {low doses of course}, but I am having second thoughts now. True, the joint pain was pretty bad, but I'll just load up on NASIDs instead, and use my inhaler religously from now on. This is the only negitive side effect I have had, BUT IT IS ENOUGH FOR ME!

As I read thru the pamphlet about Yasmin...something ocured to me. I am one of those people who was sick as a dog while expecting (both times)...every kind of cramp known to woman kind, I got. My Dr. started me on vitamin B6 to help with the sickness! It was a life saver. So anyway looking at pamphlet, I decided after experiencing a few weeks of nausea that if my body thinks I am preg-o I should take B6...have felt great since. Just something to think about for those of you with mild symptoms...

I just want to reply to you and everyone else who is having difficulty with doctors acknowledging mirena side effects. I work in pharmaceutical research and what people need to understand is that clinical trials only test on samples of about 5,000 patients and the side effects observed in those people are the ones acknowledged in the literature your doctors are referring to. The problem with that is for a drug sample population to statistically represent the actual US population it would have to be at least 30,000 people. This is not feasible even for the most profitable big pharma companies. So once these drugs get to market, there are inevitably going to be people experiencing side effects not reflected in clinical trials.
That said, I had Mirena put in 6 weeks after giving birth to my son in August 2008. Pre-preg I weighed 132, at 9 months I was 173. I left the hospital weighing 152. When i got mirena inserted i had been loosing slowly due to breastfeeding, but I was loosing and weighed 145. By Christmas 2008 I weighed 155. So I started working out, circuit training 45 minutes, 5 days a week, and eating much healthier for 6 weeks. Like others assuming it was a change in lifestyle, stress whatever. I didn't loose a pound. After no success I cut down to less intense workouts but kept eating well. By June 2009 I was 163. At 132 lbs pre-preg at 5'4" I never worked out, I'm not kidding, ever and I was not a healthy eater, I just wasn't a big eater.
So August 10th 2009 at 168 lbs and fed up, I went to the doctor to have it removed. They insisted it was not the mirena, but if for no other reason I had to find out for myself why I could not loose weight, if i was still overweight afterwards then so be it, but I had to know.
I'm glad to announce that today September 21st, I have "inexplicably" lost 21 pounds in counting. I have not worked out like I did in those six weeks, brisk walks at the most, and I have continued eating healthy. I'm not advising anyone on what to do, I just know when I was contemplating getting this thing removed, I wanted to hear from someone who had actually gotten it removed. Also, I did not the emotional or dermatological side effects others described.
