I have always trusted the COPPER coil and have been using it for about 10 years now...I got it taken out to have a baby, and was planning on getting "fixed" so I wouldn't have any more, but my doctor said that Mirena was even better, so I figured why not, it'll stop my periods altogether. I've only had mirena for a couple of months now, and I have to say...what everyone says here scares the hell out of me. BEFORE mirena I was on medication for panic attacks and slight depression, and I had no sex drive at all. But so far, believe it or not, I find these things getting better! I wonder if mirena has opposite effects if you've already had the symptoms...I hope so...right now I feel great...I'm becoming me again, the panic attacks have considerably subsided and I feel like I'm digging myself out of the depression...I've been ecstatic! The only real side-effects I've had are cramping one random day and tingling once. Also, I'm not gaining weight, but not losing either. The only annoying thing I find is I have that thick brown discharge instead of a period for 5 or six days, but I'm wondering if my period will stop completely eventually (hopefully) but no matter what I'll take brown sludge any day over an 8 day bledfest.

However, after reading through everyone's comments, I find myself really worried, since I've only had mirena a couple of months and a few of you said that it took like 6 months or so for anything bad to start happening. If that's the case then where will that leave me afterwards? Will my depression get worse?? I don't know what to do, and now I'm pretty nervous.

Thank god i found this site, honestly i never had a problem with loestrin and thought it was great for my first time on birth control. well, a few months back (October) i had started spotting randomly during about the 2nd week of white pills then that bleeding lasted for about 2 weeks. when it came time for my regular "period" (brown pills) there was hardly anything there at all! now here we are months later after getting my period since then (November, December) with very light bleeding for about one day, i only had to use one or two tampons honestly. i was due to get my period this past week and NOTHING! i have been FREAKING out the past 2 days where i couldn't eat, sleep, or function at work because i thought i was pregnant. i have heard of some women getting pregnant on the pill so thats why i was so freaked out. i took a test today and it was negative but i just don't understand how i could have gotten my period every month since i have been on this pill for the past 2 1/2 years and this month i got nothing at all. my friend is on loestrin also and she has the same problem and her doctor told her as long as you take the pills everyday and if you miss one take it a.s.a.p. then you are fine. i am due for my anual exam very soon and i am definitely going to bring this to her attention because i had no idea this was a side effect. trust me i don't mind not having a period but i don't like being scared half to death either! not to mention even with my insurance this pill is so expensive!!!!!

I had mine inserted the first week of July. Yes, it was freaking uncomfortable getting it done and I had cramping the rest of the day, but my OB warned me of that and I made the decision to go ahead. I'm not in a position to complain about it now.
I bled/spot for 2-3 weeks after insertion. Only heavy enough to require a tampon for the first week, but I had it inserted when I was supposed to be starting my period anyway. Again my OB suggested this and warned me about the possibility of bleeding for up to 6 months. Again my decision to go forward!
Since then I have had cramping once a month like I'm going to start my period and never do. Within the last few weeks I've started getting the acne and an oily scalp. It's all over my back and not poppable. I'm hoping it will eventually subside when my body gets used to the new hormone level I'm giving it. If you think about it, it's the same thing in puberty (ie change in hormones) that kicks off the acne so it doesn't surprise me that this is a side effect. If it doesn't subside I'll make a decision then whether or not to have it out.
I have not had any of the other side effects. In fact I had terrible headaches and neck pain before I got this and those have gotten much better.

I was on the pill for 15 years before getting mirena and I had much worse side effects with that (extreme moodiness, loss of sexual desire, bad cramps, long periods, etc). I tried multiple brands of pills and never found one I was 100% happy with. But I dealt with it because I made the decision to go on B/C.
I'll take the acne over those any day! (not to mention I got pregnant on the pill!!!)

I understand that these side effects suck, but you act like it's the company's fault. They specifically list the common side effects and the majority of the ones you're complaining about are listed in plain site Taken directly from their website:
Menstrual changes
Lower abdominal pain (cramps)
Acne or other skin problems
Back pain
Breast tenderness
Headache
Mood changes
Nausea
Ovarian cysts have been diagnosed in about 12% of Mirena® users. In most cases, the enlarged follicles disappeared spontaneously during two to three months of observation.

Did you think that's just for show? Did you ever stop to consider (before getting the product) you might actually get those side effects and what you would do if you did? It is your body... YOU are the only one responsible for what goes inside it. No one held you down and forced you to do this. Mirena didn't hide anything from you or trick you into it. Take some responsibility for your actions! Quit blaming others. This is a great example of what is wrong with our society today!

Take responsibility! Do your research! Make your own decisions and deal with the consequences of them without blaming others!

If you look at the mirena website it gives you the FDA number to call to report side effects. If you're having major ones call the FDA and report it so that more than just people that stumble upon this forum know about it!

I am 27 and had Mirena put in about 2 months ago during my 6 week check-up after my second child. I had been put on a mild antidepressant for "baby blues" only a week or so after my son was born. So I didn't notice the mood swings so much after I had it put in. But after gaining back some of the weight I had lost, I decided to forego the Lexipro for a while so that I could take diet pills to help me lose the weight. I expected to be more moody, but I didn't expect anything like this. I cry at the drop of a hat, I freak out on my 2-year old unexpectedly, and I have NO sex drive. It is WAY worse than before. I also have been to the doctor for problems with my knee. It hurts all the time. My other joints ache pretty bad at night, and I have never had joint problems before this. The past two days I have had a stabbing pain in my abdomen. It hurts when I move or sit down. My stomach is very swollen, and now I am wondering if it is the bloating that many of you are talking about, or if it is swollen from an infection that may or may not be causing the pain. What do I do?! I hate not to stick it out for a while, because I really don't feel as if I have much of an alternative except for something perminant. My mother AND my grandmother got pregnant on the pill, and I can't remember to take them at the exact same time every day. UGH!

I have been on nuvaring for 2 years, switched from the patch because I was having this wierd discharge that resembled blood but not red enough to be sure that it was spotting. I love the ring; I do have a low sex drive but I blamed that on my being tired from working 2 jobs and going to school full time, plus household responsibilities and stuff...So now I'll have to see somehow if the ring is what is really taking that away. But am I the only one on here that is experiencing a super dry irritated itchy vagina? I have had this problem for the last 3-4 months, and I have had a pap and exam and I don't have anything bacterial...this itch is borderline yeast-infection intense. I have been on BC since I was 16 (I'm 29 now) and I have tried everything..I will get pregnant on the pill since I will forget to take it, the patch problem is mentioned above, the shot made me spot FOREVER, I must agree with the girl that said this may be God's way of telling her it's time for a baby, cuz this itch is about ready to make me throw in the towel. If it were not for the itch I wouldn't have any complaints.
