I just stumbled across this site and it has given me such renewed hope. I have GERD and have been on 40 MG of pantoprazole for about two months. My DR suggested taking two pills a day (one in the morning, one at night) for two weeks to see if that helped my lingering problems. It did. So much so I started eating like an animal again. Of course, this it me hard in the throat. In a panic (insurance wouldn't cover two pills a day) I added Prilosec OTC as my nightly solution. I had already noticed pins and needles in my arms and legs slowly developing. Exactly two days after including the Prilosec I was instantly hit with a panic attack and extreme anxiety literally out of no where. I had nothing on my mind and absolutely content moments before and then in a totally different mind set. I had paranoia and abnormal thoughts. I didn't sleep for almost 5 days (with a few hours here and there). I am 31 and have never had anything like this anxiety and like other readers here thought I was going crazy. I stopped the OTC when I thought it was the culprit and four days later I am doing a bit better. Reading the stories here I believe I am stopping the omeprazole starting tomorrow to see if I get even better. I feel like my entire body is shaking from this stuff and it is the only thing I have changed or added to my life. Thank you all for your stories as I was grasping at straws.

Well I too am having "weird" symptoms. It may be due to Omeprazole but not sure at this point. I switched from Prilosec OTC to Omeprazole which I thought to be the exact same thing. A couple months after the switch I am having chest tightness. Not really pain but just a weird feeling in my chest that almost feels like anxiety or stress and kind of a general weird feeling. Also kind of feels like a chest cold without the mucus that goes along with it. Went to the doc and had a EKG which was normal. I'm 30 years old and don't have any family history of heart issues.
I'm going to stop taking it for a few days to see if the symptoms get better. I'll post back in a week or so.

Abyone experience excess salivating?? I have all the above symptoms and they are horrible! I felt better before the prescription. I am on 1000 mg once and day, 2000 mg of Amoxicillin once a day and a Prilosec OTC 2x's a day. I'm taking what's called a Prevpac for a stomach bacteria called H Pylori. This has been a 2 year journey to figure out what was causing my GI issues! I had a period of about a month with no stomach issues, BUT, as soon as the Biaxin it started right back up within 20 mins! The taste in my mouth is making me sick to my stomach and I'm trying to decide if I should stop. I'm trying to hang in there because in the long run it will work in my favor, but this is only day #4 and I have 10 more to go! Any suggestions?!

I've been taking Prilosec OTC for 3 years, 20mg a day. All problems with my acid reflux disappeared. HOWEVER, I switched to generic Omeprazole 20mg and the heartburn reappeared. This has been awful! I thought they were supposed to be the same drug! I switched back to Prilosec OTC and my stomach is finally feeling some relief.

I'm not sure if this is a side effect but since I've been taking this drug my face has broken out in these small red bumps. After reading this blog I can finally figure out why I was always scratching my arms and legs especially at night and why I'm so tired all of a sudden. Is the drug worst than the heartburn???

Severe frontal lobe headaches that occur upon waking in the AM.
Today also had visual acuity affected in left eye. The pain was like
nothing I have ever experienced! I must take 800mg IB immediately
and not move at all, nausea the sets in and it takes a couple of
hours to slowly resolve. I am left feeling weak, shaky, disoriented
for the rest of the day. This EXACT scenario has happened twice
after starting 20 mg. of Prilosec twice daily (started 2 weeks ago).
Needless to say I am not taking this medication anymore.

I started on Prilosec OTC 20MG 12/12/07 first thing in the morning (1 hour before eating) for ulcers and suspected Hiatal Hernia. At first it was great - took my acid reflux away - starting yesterday I developed a tickling feeling in my throat an hour or two after taking and a cough that accompanies the tickle - also after eating within an hour my nose gets stuffed up and I feel like mucous is running down the back of my throat. Also I have had a feeling of upper chest tightness off and on (especially within an hour of eating) almost like a cramping feeling in my chest.
I was put on Prilosec because the Dr. suspected that acid reflux was making my asthma much worse. Asthma has been better on the Prilosec but with the past two days of the dry tickling cough and chest tightness it is scaring me.
Anyone else have this??? Please help!!!!

I was weaned off 50 mg Toprol over an 8 day period (after having been on it for 4 years) and then had been off it completely for 10 days -- when my Dr. decided that what I was feeling could not POSSIBLY STILL be side effects from Toprol Withdrawal and so put me BACK on it at a lower dose (25 mg instead of 50 mg) - and 80 mg of Diovan (along with Prilosec OTC for acid reflux and a Hiatal hernia) - the Diovan made me so sick, I developed a bad cough and pains in my upper chest so I stopped that --- and low and behold after being back on the Toprol 25 mg for 2 days -- the severe chest tightness is BACK and worse than EVER -- it is horrible. I am a 33 year old woman with asthma (5'3 @ 135 pounds with no other health problems) -- my problem is without meds my B/P runs 140/110 (they say that it is genetic and that I do not work out and have a desk job - because I do not drink or smoke and I am not overweight, and I eat a very healthy diet) -- but the meds they want me take for it give me so many side effects I cannot STAND IT.. I don't know what to do -- I go back to my DR. Wed for a follow-up but cannot stand this chest tightness until then.......... Being 10 days off Toprol I was still have chest tightness and breathing difficulties -- but not as often and not as severe - so I thought maybe it just took a long time to get out of your system... My Dr. said I should have been feeling better after 3-5 days so that it could not possibly be the Toprol. I am at my WITS END and do not know where to turn or what to do.

I am sure glad I found this sight. I was trying to find out if the Prilosec OTC may be why I have had sharp pains in my right side, where my liver is located, and after reading the effects that Prilosec has had on other people I am throwing mine away. I am scheduled to see a doctor in regards to bad dizzy spells, pains that run from my left shoulder, up my neck, my left ear rings terribly, and tremendous pressure behind my left eye. I was fearful that I have a blockage in a vein to my brain. My left leg from above my knee has gone numb, I can't wiggle my toes, I get tremendous cramps in my left calf at least 6 times a night. I feel like a basket case and I have done nothing to make any of these things start happening. A year after having my gall bladder removed and adhesions cut away from my stomach the doctor gave me Prilosec to see if it would help with some very minor stomach pains I was having. As a matter of fact I took a Prilosec an hour ago because of the pain in my liver area and as I write this I have a bad headache, my left arm is tingly, the left side of my neck is tight, I am dizzy, and feel like I want to vomit. No more Prilosec for me and I am definately telling my friend who is on it after he had his esophogus removed 5 years ago due to cancer about what I have read here tonight. He can't figure out why he felt so much better 4 years after his cancer was removed but feels so terrible now. They gave him Prilosec 6 months ago to help him with a phlegm problem. I thank you all for your input on this message board. You helped me out tremendously. I have only been on it for a couple weeks and as of right now I am not going to take it again.

I started taking Prilosec OTC a month ago to treat GERD...just over a month ago. Very shortly after starting the medication, I noticed I was getting dull headaches and tension in my head that lasted throughout the day...not a migraine, but enough to be annoying. I also noticed as time went on that I have become very nervous/anxious, my heart rate jumps up easily, and now I am having blood pressure spikes that I never had before. I have seen that Omeprazole (similar drug) has caused similar problems in others, and even my doctor told me that the same class of drugs can cause similar problems. My GP is very suspicious, because all of this began after I took the drug. Even though I had slightly elevated Dr's office BP, it was never at current levels. And I cant sleep at night nearly as well, and that DEFINITELY started just after taking the meds. Anyone else experience this?? My Gastro Doctor is skeptical, but I think my GP DR thinks something is not right here and she suspects the medicine...

I am a healthy, active 31-yr-old with no medical problems other than acid reflux (I take Prilosec OTC) and 50 lbs overweight. (I may be slightly overweight, but I'm very strong, healthy, and I work out religiously 3-4x a week with a personal fitness trainer.) I've been an Ortho-Tricyclen user for years due to my dysfunctional menorrhea (extremely painful menstruation with flooding blood for days, unending cramps, bloating and water-weight gain). I absolutely adore the OT Rx as I only have to have my period 4x a year, and it's not so dysfunctional when it comes. However after doing much research, I decided to try out Nuvaring and drop taking the pill everyday. I started the ring this past Saturday night at 10 PM (as that's easier for me to remember than a Sunday) and today is only less than two days later. My ankles blew up with what seems like water after the first eight hours of use. I had sex later on Saturday night with the ring inside me, and I got to add a burning sensation to my symptoms, which as of yet still has not gone away. Today (Monday) when I woke up, my hands are swollen now too. Exactly 36 hours of wearing the ring, and already symptoms, least to mention symptoms that should have nothing to do with birth/menstruation control? I just threw the ring away a few minutes ago; I'm going back to OT this week.

Guest-
try taking vitamin C and prilosec OTC for the burping and acid reflux. I still burp once and a while but it's not nearly as bad as it was before. I've been off Yasmin for about 3 weeks. Also, Orange Juice tends to make me burp more than normal...not sure if it's the same for you.

I am not talking about Prescription Prilosec, rather Prilosec OTC (over the counter). Since my insurance company raised my co-pay by leaps and bounds, I decided to try the OTC. Well, just recently I noticed my heart was fluttering. I reread the instruction to OTC and it is not to be taken every day like prescription Prilosec...only 14 days and then stop! I have exceeded that by several days. When I was first given the prescription, I went through many studies including an endoscopy which was proven that I had acid reflux.
I hope this helps someone else who might try it. I guess it's going to take a fight with the insurance company next.

I was prescribed Biaxin Extended Release, 500 mg/2x daily for 10 days, for a sinus infection. I am on the 5th day, and feel absolutely horrible. The nausea is CONSTANT, I am very tired, headaches, stomach cramping, bad gas, sleeplessness..the list goes on and on. Also, am very emotional. I have a history of depression, but this is a whole new ball game. I cry at almost anything. I called my doctor today to switch to a new antibiotic, and am waiting to hear back.
