started this 7 days ago for a prostate infection... I thought i've been going crazy this week until i saw this post..im having a horrible reaction to this stuff..although it does seem to help my prostate...it leaves the rest of me in bad shape. First off ive been getting lightheaded like every other day to the point as i think im have a panic attack but heart isn't racing...I've gotten diarrhea 3-5 times a day i go now...i had a bagel the other day for breakfast..it was the hardest thing to eat as i felt sick to my stomach and knew i had to eat something so forced it in..today i had a banana and some grapes and 15 minutes later was throwing it all up. I just called my doctor and asked for a change in antibiotics as this thing has lead me to believe there was something wrong with me although my doctor seems to think these side effects don't generally happen...i come here and see they happen EXACTLY how i have been feeling and just hope this doesn't last much longer in my system!

I took Levaquin on multiple occasions for a severe prostate infection. I took a 15 day supply...then off for 1 week...another 15 day supply...off for two weeks...and then a 30 day supply. I took another 30 day supply when the infection resurfaced about a year later. During the time I was on it I experienced extreme "arthritis like" pain in my ankles, wrists, shoulders, and especially my back. The infection was over 3 years ago and I have not taken Levaguin since. However, the joint pain has never went away. I can barely climb stairs as my right knee feels like it is going to pop out of socket. The bone pain in my neck and between my shoulder blades is horrible. I visited a doctor (I never even considered the Levaguin as a possible antagonist) and was told that I had spinal degeneration and needed physical therapy. Protect yourself and your family from this drug.

I had a prostate infection and a sinus infection. Was given Levaquin 750 MG for three weeks once a day. Started having hand and finger pain two weeks in out of the blue. Did a little research and stopped medication. What I found was that Levaquin can cause skeletal fluorosis or just fluorosis in some people. Considering the internet response and the number of other medications that react with Levaquin I would guess this is a pretty common side effect. I started a body purge the day I stopped and have experienced a dramatic decrease in pain. I also have Fibro so a slight pain is manageable though my pain has never been in my hands and fingers. If you have taken this off and on for different infections through the years or any of its cousins, like Cipro, I'm sure you will wonder if it could have contributed to joint pain and reduced activity levels caused by the pain for many years. Good luck to us all.

Folks, please stay away from this poison! I started taking Levaquin as prescribed for the thunderbolt-like strike of a prostate infection. The infection hit at around 8 PM on Friday, took the first 500 mg Levaquin Saturday at 10 AM. Later that day, after having taken only one dose, I started having difficult to breathe and my speech became faulty, as I could not naturally coordinate breathing with speaking (later I learned that I was having, and still have, diaphragm spasms.) In addition to that, I suffered for the next couple of days from intense dizziness, extreme difficulty in walking, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and 100% loss of appetite (could not ingest any solid food for two days, period). Still not connecting the dots, I took the second pill from hell on Sunday at 10 AM. By Monday morning I had read enough info on this site to know better and not take the third dose. I realized that, at the rate my breathing was deteriorating, things would get pretty grim very soon. I showed up in my doctor's office unannounced and was told right away to switch to Cipro. One of the problems I see with detecting a medication's side effects is one's ability to distinguish them from the actual symptoms of the disease: a good example are the intense chills and shivering associated with fever, but apparently much more intense and lasting long after the fever is gone when provoked by Levaquin. Please question your doctor if he/she prescribes this poison from hell to you and recommend that friends do the same.

I was given Levaquin for a prostate infection. They prescribed me 750 mg for 30 days. I have been off of the drug for 3 weeks and I still have pain in my tendons. Shoulder tendons, knees, elbow and hands. How long can this last? I feel like I am dying.

I had a Prostate Infection that Bactrim and Doxycyline would not cure. So the doctor said the only thing that would cure i is Cipro or Levaquin. I was on it for a month. I tuffed it out and I had to take Tramadol to kill the leg pain. One day I accidentally took an extra Cipro pill and within a half hour, I had a hard time walking. I actually could feel my achilles heel pulling when I walked like it had shrunk. I've been off it two months now and I don't feel any better. I am tired and aching all the time. I have no strength. My back and knees hurt everyday to where I can't function without taking some kind of pain medicine. How long does this last? I talked to a lawyer who is doing the Cipro lawsuits and he said unless I had a ruptured tendon or can get a doctor to say I have chronic tendinitis, I have no case. I have never felt so bad in my life.

Was prescribed it for prostate infection. Turned pale, sweating, dizziness , vomiting. I went to the ER there was a 4-5 hour wait , went home after 2 hours, I couldn't handle the ER waiting room. The worst 24-36 hours in my life. Now on Bactrim.

Was taking Levaquin for UTI and prostate infection, which caused horrible side effects. Now taking Bactrim and feel terrible, do not sleep well and get up feeling so tired cannot do daily chores. Guess will have to tolerate all this in order to get rid of infection, but wonder if there are not some antibiotics that do not have all this terrible side effects and still do their job.

I didn't realize how many problems this med has caused for other people as well. I've been on Minocin for acne and Cipro for prostates in the past and never had any major side effects until taking Doxycycline. I've been on it for two weeks and have two more left for a prostate infection. My latest is an aching pain in my lower legs and tingling in my feet and toes. My main advice for this med would be 1) Take with a decent sized meal and 2) DO NOT lie down for at least one hour after taking or it could irritate your esophagus. I took it before bed the first couple of days and had some bad heartburn for a couple of days but it is gone for the most part now. I've also had the tightness in the face, throat, and chest. My advice there is to relax and take some deep breaths to eliminate any anxiety that could make it worse. If it doesn't go away or gets worse and you have trouble breathing or anything like that you may be having an allergic reaction. I'm definitely going to have a talk with my doctor for not warning me about all of these side effects before putting me on this crap for a month.

In my case, Cipro tablets were prescribed for a potential prostate infection. The first dose was taken on 12/12/07. While taking this medication, I experienced "pens and needles" and shooting pains all over my body, leg pains behind my knees, right groin swelling to the point I could barely walk, and chest discomfort just below the sternum. The chest discomfort started after the second dose. My use of this drug was discontinued on about 12/17/07 (after 6 doses). I threw it away. Read the label BEFORE you start this medication. It's quite alarming after the fact.

I let my physician know about my problems with the Cipro and he then prescribed Levaquin, 500 mg, which is the same class of antibiotic. This was confusing to me later since I told them about the problems with Cipro. The doctor knows best...right- so I took 1 Levaquin per day from 12/21/07 until 12/26/07, again about 6 doses. My symptoms re-appeared after about the third day. Pen and needle pains re-occurred although they never entirely went away from the Cipro, severe swelling and tendon pain behind knees- especially the left knee, some chest discomfort, swelling in the armpits, and groin area. Swelling sensations were most prevalent behind both knees and the armpits. Shooting pains also occurred everywhere in my body, especially in the arms and legs. Shooting pains also occurred in my head and jaw with no warning but were less severe. The bottoms of my feet also hurt at times. Sleep was difficult to come by so extreme fatigue set in. I have been off the Levaquin now since 12/26/07 (5 days) and still have some shooting pains but some of the swelling has subsided. The symptoms have reduced but not disappeared entirely. I will never take a quinolone antibiotic again. My suggestion to others is to file an Adverse Drug Reaction report with FDA on their Medwatch website.

I again saw the physician on 12/27/07 and he said that it's "possible" I could be having a rare side effect. Another physician I know said I was having some type of hypersensitivity to the medication but that he had never come across such a case in his practice. Just my luck.

Terrible, terrible rash on both legs. The itch is unbearable! That crazy doctor prescribed this for supposedly prostate infection - which did not have any symptoms! I never felt this bad in my life. He made me take it for one month and then discontinued.

Joint pains, sleeping forever, drowsiness. I agree this drug should never be prescribed. Were it not for my wife, I would never have known that this drug is the culprit. She researched the drug in the internet because of the severity of the red, blistering rash that covered both my legs - front, side and back!

I was prescribed Levaquin on 4 Sept 06 for what my doctor diagnosed as a prostate infection. I took the first 500 mg pill on Monday, Labor Day and by Tuesday the symptoms were subsiding. I THOUGHT I HAD FOUND A WONDER DRUG! The doctor gave me a month supply, that's right, 30 pills and 1 refill. I took the pill for 6 days and by Saturday afternoon, I thought I was going to die. I started shaking uncontrolably, I was sweating, and my heart was beating out of my chest. I laid down for about 20 minutes and my wife got scared and called 911. I was transported to the ER and the doctor there said I was "in the sun too long" and I was diagnosed with a severe sunburn. I asked the doctor in the ER if I was having an alergic reaction to the Levaquin, she stated "no" it was just a sever sunburn. I took another 500mg Levaquin on Sunday and by Monday I was having severe muscle pain and again, felt so weak I thought I was dying! I called the doctor who prescribed the Levaquin and told him I was having a severe reaction, he stated he really felt that I should finish the medication! I stopped taking Levaquin on Monday, 11 Sept 06 and I am STILL feeling the side effects of taking only 8 pills!! This drug needs to be taken off the market NOW!

I was prescibed Levaquin about three weeks ago for a sinus and kidney infection. After a few days I began to have horrible dreams but associated these with a very disturbing murder in our area. I couldn't sleep, had terrible headaches, but associated this with my sinus infection. After 10 days I was no better but felt worse so I called my doctor and he wanted me to take the Levaquin for another 10 days. After this I developed severe pain in my calves, knees, arms, back, and hands. I attributed this to my fibroymyalgia but as the days have gone by, I'm getting progressively worse. The pain is so bad that pain medication won't even help. I talked with my brother in Florida tonight and he told me that he had had the same problem when he was on Levaquin. I decided to look up the medication and found all of these remarks. I am to go to my doctor tomorrow and I'm going to take these with me. I won't take this medication again. I have missed church and so much more because I have been in pure misery. I had taken this before and thought the pain was just coming from my fibromyalgia but this time it is much worse. It hurts to walk, or stand, for any period of time. My husband just read all the remarks and said that he was having some of the same problems. It turns out that he is taking Levaquinn for a prostate infection. I'm going to take him with me tomorrow to the doctor to see if he can't be given something else. I just hope it isn't too late for me. I've had fibromyalgia for years but never had pain this bad. I'll do my homework from now on with any medications that I've been given. Let me know what is recommended if the pain doesn't go away. Penny

I was given 10 days worth of Levaquin for a prostate infection. That dose didn't clear it up, so the second time I was given 30 days of the drug. The second dose got rid of the infection. But while I was taking Levaquin, I was irritated, anxious, depressed (which is rare with me), couldn't sleep well, and had weird -- and negative -- dreams.

Took it for 30 days for prostate infection. Fixed it, but then like an idiot I took Nyquil for a cold/flu which caused enlargement of prostate and subsequently backwash of urine which infected prostate again. Then took Cipro for two weeks, then Flomax to shrink prostate for 1 month. Infection came back. Starting on Bactrim for another 30 days.
When taking Bactrim for first two weeks only had dry-mouth. When I refilled at different Walgreens (this one in Marietta, GA) I immediately got bad headaches. These only lasted a day or two, then back to dry mouth.
Please note: was taking sulfameth/trimethoprim, the GENERIC form of Bactrim.

Soreness in muscles, especially upper body, and very large bowel movements (solid but in a big hurry to leave). Also dry mouth.
Used it for two weeks for prostate infection. Always took it with food. Infection came back after a few days of being off it. Long-haul trucker.

I was prescribed Levaquin for a prostate infection. 500mg per day for 30 days. Took it for a couple of weeks and it worked, cleared up the infection, but oh my goodness, what horrible side effects...

Parathesia, especially in hands
Unpleasant dreams and fitful sleep
Heavy, heavy fatigue and weakness
Muscle and tendon pain extraordinare - twitchy too
Joint pain, back pain, you name it, it hurt
Lower left leg even feels sunburned when lightly touched
Slightly psycho / depressed

I will never, ever take this medicine again. I stopped taking the medicine over a month ago (at my physician's suggestion) but the symptoms still linger. Although, they have improved somewhat. It's nasty stuff. How on earth did the FDA approve it?

I took Levaquin for 2 months. The first few weeks no problems, then I started having pain in my bones lower legs, When I went to get some food from the fridge, I could not crouch to reach the bottom shelf anymore, then knees hurt like hell, my hips, lower back, cant stand up, chills all the time, but I thought it was from my prostate infection maybe it spread or something, or maybe I was being silly, maybe it's the cold weather? so I ignored it.

Then I sprained both my ankles, one week after each other. Then that only added to my pain, I was walking like a 100 year old man, limping on both sides. Everything I did some part of my body hurt.

Now I know what old age is like.

I had something wich I thought was a heart attack twice, my chest felt really tight, like a car was on it, I thouhgt I was gonna die, it lasted about 15 munites the first time, I crwled from the kitchen table to the couch, and about 5 minuts the ssecond time. I thught I'm getting old and gonna die soon.

Then I started feeling pain in my butt (laugh) for real, my thigh muscles felt like I just ran a marathon, my whole body felt like I been hit by a train.

By palms are numb, my thumb is numb, I can hardly type this post right now cause I cant use my left hand that much anylonger (and I'm left handed). I cant turn my head anymore because my neck hurts. I feel like I'm dieing.

After reading this post, what happenned to poeple on Levaquin for only a few days, and I was on it for two months! oh my god!!

I start to get strange headaches, not really bad ones, but strange hard pain like feeling. My vision is also going, I can see clearly from each eye seleratly, but when I use both eyes at the same time it's blurry, strange, its as if my brain cant use both eyes at the same time anymore.

My body feels really bad as if I'm 100 years old. I wonder if maybe I have prostate cancer, and it spread really fast all over my body, or it's the levaquin that's doing it? I sent for the AMAS kit that test for cancer because I know somethings wrong with me. I hope its the levaquin and not cancer!

June 7, 2004 I took Levaquin for a prostate infection. I started getting a sore throat with sores after four pills. I was treated for yeast infection with Nystatin. The doctor said that the Levaquin killed the good bacteria which lead to the yeast infection. It cleared my sore throat but now I have no taste or desire for food. I have lost 18 lbs in 2 weeks. I have neck and head pain which I was prescribed Methylprednisolone 4mg. Wed. June 30th is my last pill. I used to be healthy.

I am a 62 year old healthy male. About two months ago I was prescribed 500 mg. Levaquin by my urologist for a suspected prostate infection. Within the first 24 hours I experienced strange visual effects and extreme fatigue. By the third day on the medication I began to notice motor coordination problems. On the fourth day I awoke with chills, major hand tremors, and extreme motor coordination difficulties in my hands (I was unable to pick up a coffee cup with only one hand). I stopped taking it at this point, of course, and the symptoms gradually declined. It was a terrifying experience.

About one month later I had a relapse of the original symptoms and immediately arranged an appointment with my regular physician, who ordered a brain MRI and a prescription for a beta blocker to relieve the tremors. The MRI was negative. My symptoms improved markedly, almost immediately, and have not returned, even though I am no longer taking the beta blocker (after one month of regular dosage). I have my fingers crossed for the future.

I learned that my sister had similar reactions to Levaqui, suggesting that there might be a genetic predisposition to such an extreme reaction. From now on I will indicate to medical personnel that I cannot tolerate any member of the fluoroquinalone family of antibiotics.

As a side note, it turned out that I did not have a prostate infection after all but rather that a sudden upward jump in a PSA reading led the urologist to suspect the infection. A retest showed that the reading was anomalous, completely out of line with my history of lab tests for PSA. The worrisome part of this experience is the physician's willingness to prescribe such a powerful drug without clear indication of an infection.

I dont think these are new but I would like others to know before they take this medicine.I took levaquin for a prostate infection for 16 days -was supposed to take it for 30. I had many side effects including poor sleep, vivid dreams, muscle and joint pains, ringing in the ears, dizzines, fatigue, and most of all an overall nasty feeling-everything looked ugly. The medicine seemed to be working so I stuck with it in spite of these side effects. On the 16th day doing nothing more than just normal walking in my house I tore a muscle-ligament in my right calf. Now I am walking with a limp and severe pain and my urologist told me to immediately see an orthopedist as torn tendons are a possible side effect of this medicine.I wish I was told earlier.Take my advice dont take this medicine! You are just going to trade one problem for another.

I was on Levaquin 2 years & Tequin 6 months for prostate infection. Off several months and on Levaquin 1 week late January 2003. Had doctor's treatment on a Hako Pain Machine (like giant TENS unit) and afterwards had tingling & walking-on-springs feeling in right foot. Later felt like I was vibrating in the crotch. Week later had tingling/vibrating all over my body. In legs/feet most of the time but other times all over. It can be terrifying. Local doctors no help so went to Mayo Clinic where diagnosed "small fiber neuropathy" and "diffuse vibratory sensation". I KNOW this is result of the fluoroquinolones. Drugs I have been on either don't work or give side effects too much to tolerate. Doctors I've seen feel it "may" be result of the antibiotics. I am trying low carbohydrate diet and absolutely no sugar as that triggers the vibrating sensation bigtime. So far I have not found anyone with quite similar symptoms to mine.

Was given Minocin capsules (3 weeks worth) for prostate infection. After 7 days I felt like I was inside myself looking out and had to strain to concentrate on doing normal everyday things. Tried to write a check at the grocery and could hardly do so without re-thinking how several times. Stopped the Minocin immediately and the symptoms improved in a day and a half. Had taken other tetracyclines previously with no such side effects.

I have been diagnosed with prostate infection for which I have gone through 2 14-day rounds of 500mg Levaquin. The infection seems to go away for a while, but inevitably comes back. I have been told I might need to take Levaquin daily for up to 6 months to get completely rid of the infection, but after reading all the problems with Levaquin, will definitely see other treatment. Does anyone know of another antibiotic not in the Levaquin family that might help?
