I am a 71 year old man with COPD (emphysema) My pulmonologist has prescribed Spiriva and Advair. I have taken Advair for over three years and Spiriva for about 18 months. Lately, I have experience a rapid heart beat (sometimes 138 bpm), problems with hoarseness, thick mucus in the throat, weight gain including an unpleasant, distended belly after eating, leg cramps at night, heartburn, dizziness and slow stream urination. I've been checked for prostate problems, the results of which were normal. My heart has always been healthy but lately with the rapid heartbeat, I've become very concerned. I am going to stop taking the Advair and see what the results are. The Spiriva seems to be doing a good job for me and I will continue with it since it is not a steroid.

this is the worst drug i have ever experienced, finished 28 day cycle in november 05 for prostate problems, since then i have been on buspar and xanax for anxiety and twitching! I have limbs that will go numb for no apparent reason, insomnia, terrible dreams, shortness of breath and so on. I have good days and bad...some days i feel normal and the next i will have internal shakiness, muscle spasms, feeling of fear and anxiety. I am a 39 year old male who used to be up for just about anything, now i cannot even make it through most days without wanting to curl into a ball....DO NOT TAKE THIS CRAP....I will suffer before ever taking this again!!!!!

I have recently been on this website to find out side effects of Levaguin. The reason for my interest was the side effect that I experienced. I was given Levaquin, 250mg a day for prostate problems and on the 12th day of a 14 day prescription I started to have blurry vision in my left eye. I quit taking the drug but the blurriness never ended. I had just been to an eye doctor for a new eye glass prescription only three weeks prior to me taking this drug and had correctable 20/20 vision, in both eyes. It has been over three weeks and my left eye never returned to clarity. I went and saw a different eye doctor and he said that I developed cataracts in my left eye and that I would have to have surgery if I wanted to get my vision back to 20/20. I'm only 54 and I can't believe this happened to me. I mean how does cataracts develope in just three weeks? So I printed nine months of these posts and counted 14 other reported cases of eye problems and one mention of cataracts. But has this really happened to someone else? I wish to contact anyone else that has had similar problems. Can anyone advise?

I am the person who posted the above message about kidney pain as a bad side-effect of N. use for fibromyalgia -- I use the drug for muscle pain, and to get to sleep at night -- and am at the point of trying to lower the dose, as well as wean myself off of it, before permanent damage can happen to my kidneys (and I hate the brain-fog).

Some research into the chemical and physical effects of the med lead me to believe that it works by helping the kidneys take a certain substance out of the blood stream -- the same way that dialysis works for kidney-failure, so definately Neurontin will affect the operation of the kidneys (see posting on "husband taking it for prostate problems" -- is this because of problems urinating?).

There have NOT been any studies on how Neurontin works -- or dangers/side-effects of the drug --for any other use besides epileptic seizures. If a person is experiencing bad side-effects he or she should immediately contact the doctor who prescibed it and ask for a different med, or for the dosage to be reduced (don't just stop taking it, which is what a lot of people do about bad side-effects -- that could be dangerous.). Such use makes a patient a guiney-pig for research, and the makers of Neurontin have been under attack for aggressively pushing it for what are called "off-label" uses.

If the doctor won't listen to you about this, find another one. IT'S YOUR BODY and no one knows better how you feel inside of it. Also you could experiment with withdrawing yourselve from high levels of the dosage, or asking that the amount of the med in the rx be reduced...fast- withdrawal sometimes causes seizures (as I understand it) and of course you have the complete right to ask a doctor to listen to your symptoms and needs.

Also if you're a person who notices bad effects in a child or a spouse you should make it an urgent project to point the bad effects out to the doctor, to become an advocate for the person who cannot do it. Good luck. JanK in Portland OR (and I am not a doctor, just a person with a lot of experience in surviving the American health system.)
