Straight from Wikipedia:
Metoprolol may worsen the symptoms of heart failure in some patients. Check with your doctor right away if you are having chest pain or discomfort; dilated neck veins; extreme fatigue; irregular breathing; an irregular heartbeat; shortness of breath; swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs; weight gain; or wheezing.

This medicine may cause changes in your blood sugar levels. Also, this medicine may cover up signs of low blood sugar, such as a rapid pulse rate. Check with your doctor if you have these problems or if you notice a change in the results of your blood or urine sugar tests.

This medicine may cause some people to become less alert than they are normally. If this side effect occurs, do not drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are not alert while taking metoprolol .

Side effects
Transient effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, unusual dreams, ataxia, trouble sleeping, depression, and vision problems. It may also reduce blood flow to the hands and feet, causing them to feel numb and cold; smoking may worsen this effect.

Serious side effects that are not to be tolerated for any length of time include symptoms of a very slow heartbeat (less than 50 bpm) (e.g. persistent dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue), bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, numbness/tingling/swelling of the hands or feet, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction (impotence), hair loss, mental/mood changes, trouble breathing, cough, dyslipidemia, and increased thirst. Other highly unlikely symptoms include easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, yellowing skin or eyes, stomach pain, dark urine, and persistent nausea. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness. Taking it with alcohol might cause mild body rashes and therefore is not recommended.

Why on earth do Doctors keep prescribing these medications that are doing more harm than good? They are causing so many other symptoms, no wonder our Health Care in this country is "out of sight". We take drugs that continue to make us sicker , sicker, and sicker, which require more testing, testing and testing....HELLO people...you need to ask yourselves if you "believe" what that Doctors are telling you. I don't, not anymore. They are SOOOO misinformed by the Pharmaceutical Rep pushing drugs that the DRUGS have become the REAL DISEASE! You need to go back to "square one"...and get off of everything.

My girlfriend age 62 was taking 14 different medications that included BP Meds, Cholesterol Meds, and on and on. She's now laying on a Ventilator from all the interactions these drugs have caused her. She cannot even lift her head of the pillow. Her memory is shot! Just another side affect of the drugs. Are there any Doctors out there who can "step out of the box" ? You're killing people with the drugs your prescribing because you don't understand the interactions they have with each other. You just keep on prescribing. You need to study each medication before you keep prescribing them.

500 mg - started last week. Woke up twice this week with face and neck feeling like the day after a bad sunburn. No itching. Rest of body fine. No rapid pulse. Only the sunburn effect. Lasted about 1/2 hour. Somewhat uncomfortable, but tolerable. Some cool water splashed on face and neck helped.

I was put on prednisone for asthma. I tapered down from 80 mg to 10 mg over 2 weeks. After coming off of the prednisone, I experienced nausea, extreme dizziness, felt disoriented, and had muscle weakness so bad that I could barely stand up. After several trips to the emergency room, my doctor, and an endocrinologist, they figured that I needed to be tapered off of the prednisone more slowly. The endocrinologist started me back on 10 mg of prednisone and tapered me down to 2.5 mg. Since I have stopped taking the prednisone, I have experienced dizziness, headaches, tremors, a rapid pulse rate, blurry vision and a sensitivity to light. I have been off the prednisone for two weeks now and every day is different. I have some good days and some bad days. Although I have my strength back and the nausea has subsided, the dizziness is debilitating and it seems that my balance and fine motor coordination is off. I feel very mentally foggy. The doctors do not seem to have any answers for me as to why all of this is happening. It has been a very scary and frustrating experience. I am concerned that the prednisone has done some serious damage to my nervous system. Has anyone ever had these side effects? Do they eventually subside and how long will it take? It has been the longest month of my life dealing with all of the effects of this medicine. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Ladies,

I just had my Mirena inserted on 11/7/2008, and since the insertion I had experienced some side effects as well. For the first time in my life I had experienced the worst anxiety attack ever. It lasted three days... three whole days... The day after insertion my husband took me right to the ER. The er doctor said it was from the anesthesia, gave me Ativan IV and sent me home with a pill in case it didn't get better... After the anxiety attack subsided I was then left with anxiety, light headedness, dizziness, and mild headache and at times nausea. I call my doctor with these symptoms, he decided to keep me home for the rest of the week and said I should rest. However I noticed that I am still anxious, I was having a rapid pulse, I was waking up with light headache and a high blood pressure... My pulse was going up as high as 150 bpm... So far today the rapid heartbeat has calmed down. But I'm still feeling that foggy brain feeling. I feel as though I'm never going to feel normal again.. Not sure if this is all related to the Mirena but folks I haven't felt normal since I had it put in... I want to feel like my old self again... I don't feel right! Any suggestions???

I started taking 10 mg. of Lisinopril on July 8, 2008. At first, I experienced extreme fatigue and weakness. However, this wore off after a few days. The dosage was increased to 20 mg. on July 21, 2008. I started having horrible symptoms on July 29, 2008: rapid pulse (as high as 118 b.p.m. while I was quietly reading), heaviness in my chest (which felt worse after I exercised), and shortness of breath. I had never felt so bad before in my entire life!!! I suffered with these symptoms until August 15, 2008 because I was hoping that they were just temporary. Unfortunately, they only got worse the longer that I waited. It is such a shame, too, because Lisinopril really did a good job of keeping my b.p. down.

This is the third day that I haven't taken Lisinopril, and I am feeling a little better. I am now on Metoprolol, which is helping with my rapid pulse. For those of you who experienced breathing problems while taking Lisinopril: How long did it take before your breathing returned to normal?

Wow, that's all I can say. I started suffering with allergies pretty bad this March. Terrible headaches and ended up with two sinus infections. My doctor, after doing a sinus x-ray, sent me to an allergist who did a scratch test and a needle prick test with 28 shots. I am allergic to dust, dust mites, some trees and cats. He said that I should just do Mucinex and Nasonex. I've been noticing that my pulse rate is up and flutters. I wasn't sure what would cause that. I monitor my bp pretty regularly since having to get off of bp medicine due to a severe adverse reaction from that. I just assumed I was going to have to go back on bp med to control rapid pulse even thought the bp was in the normal range. This whole medicine thing is maddening. I am going to try and not take it tomorrow and see what happens. The weird thing is I use the Nasonex in the morning but the rapid pulse doesn't show up until the evening. Could Nasonex still be the cause??

My BP had been slightly elevated for over a year and my doctor felt it was time for medication. He started me on 25mgs and continued to increase it till I reached 100mgs. I started having anxiety attacks, lightheadedness, dizziness and finally ended up so sick that I was in bed for three days. It was the toprol. I was only on toprol for 3months but found out that trying to come off the drug was the hardest thing I have done. I never had BP spikes before but at the end of the first 24 hrs. without Toprol my BP was hitting 200/104. I went to ER. Matter of fact, the spikes continued and I was in and out of ER until I was finally admitted for tests. The spikes were also accompanied by flushing, rapid pulse(122 beats per minute), lightheadedness and diarrhea. Many times I thought I was having a heart attack. I have seen two cardiologists, an internist and now an endocrinologist for these "BP spikes". All tests come back normal. No matter what the new medication is, nor how low my BP might stay for up to three days....the episodes still happen. My BP can go from a normal range too 200 systolic in a matter of less than 1/2 hr..........Has anyone else had spikes in their BP when coming off toprol. It has been 11 months since stopping this awful drug and I still I no answers....but I have a pile of medical bills.

I am 37. My BP was around 160/95. My Dr put me on Lisinopril 10mg daily. My BP became normal almost immediately. I have been on it for over a year now and here is what I have noticed. I am CONSTANTLY tired and dizzy. Any thought of walking anywhere of any distance is horrifying because of the fear of collapse. I sleep over 10 hrs a night only to wake up exhausted. I am so sick of being tired. I just want to sleep my life away. This is no way to live. I am depressed all of the time. I can't even shop anywhere because of the anxiety which comes with it. i.e. numbness in arms, rapid pulse, faintness, hyper ventalation and just pure panic for no reason whatsoever. I can't control it. When I sleep, my fingers and hands fall completely asleep. They are dead. It wakes me up numerous times every night. I can't get good rest. I stopped taking Lisinopril a week ago. My BP is below normal now. My pulse is around 55 at all times. I have never had joint pain, just extreme fatigue. God willing, I won't have to take this med again, or any med. I forgot how I used to feel. I wasn't always like this.

Hi I am Paul I am a 53 year old male and have been taking Advair 250/50 for just over 4 years. I am so happy I found this site. In the past 4 years I have had increasing pain in my legs, muscles, back, hoariness in the throat, can't even talk half the time, its been impossible to loose weight half the time I feel like I am swollen up like a balloon. And also have heart palpitations and rapid pulse even when I am sitting still I have gotten to the point where I have to walk with a cane and can hardly work anymore, so I stopped taking the Advair and switched back to Albuterol inhaler hopefully I have not done any unreversable damage to myself by taking the Advair. I HAVE DEEMED IT TO BE BAD MEDICINE!

i so happy to have found this forum. i'm 47 was given 25mg of Toprol XL by doc for high blood pressure approx 9 weeks ago. also have history of panic attacks and rapid pulse rate and have been under alot of stress. first week on med, found my B.P. dropping too low 90's/50's, feeling dizzy and extremely tired in the middle of the day. called doc and was instructed to keep taking it, i'll get used to it, and don't make sudden movements!!! i didn't take his advice and cut pill in 1/2 to 12.5mg. then got extreme muscle and joint aches (a feeling very much like lyme disease) this was accompanied with profuse sweating upon minimal exertion and just no energy and shortness of breath even during an easy moderate walk. i think my heart beat has become more irregular. 2nd month into this low dose noticed chest pains so i tried the pill every other day. this weekend got the scare of a lifetime, however, got out of bed and entire left side (arm leg and foot) were numb. i had a major panic attack. this stuff is poison. i haven't taken a pill since. i'm going to find a different doctor this week (a D.O./MD) and hopefully devise a hollistic approach before i try another drug. ps also weight gain, but that's seems to be the least of the bad side effects.

WOW - it's so great to feel like I may have found an answer! Been on Toprol for about 5 yrs due to palpitations and rapid pulse. Have gained about 20 lbs,. that WILL NOT COME OFF. My short term memory loss I chalked up to middle age, but you know what? It's bad - my kids think I'm getting senile at 53! It shouldn't be that bad. Could it be the Toprol? hmmmmmm

This drug has been horrible for me.
Waves of rapid pulse and high blood pressure.
Waves of shakyness and anxiety.
Cold hands/feet, sometimes numb fingers.
Chronic mental fogginess and depression.
Some weight gain, slow heart rate, pulse in the 40s!
Heart missing beats.
This @ 25mg 2x daily.
I was told to not take it for 24 hours before my stress test,...
while in bed, asleep, about 4 hours after I should have taken it, I began to feel a buzzing throughout my body and noticed my heart racing. My bp was 170/105 120bpm. I took my missed dose and my heart started to slow back down in about an hour and a half.
I told my Dr and he said to double my dose. I did not!
I weaned my self very slowly down to half a dose (12.5mg 2x daily) and felt 50% better.
I tried to go off completely, at 1/3 dose, with my new Dr.s consent. I was good for two days then my bp and pulse rebounded. I am back on it, but now down to a quarter dose and mostly feel like myself :)
I was told by a cardiologist that the side effects (rebound bp and rapid pulse) can linger for up to 6 weeks.
Every other test I have taken has come back fine so far.
I am 30yo male and athletic.
I am sure this drug helps many people.
But for me it has been a 3 month nightmare.
If your story sounds like mine, hang in there, find a Dr that will listen to you and work with you.
You are not the only one.
Also, read side effects for other BetaBlockers

Please help. I've been on Yasmin for several years. Just recently I've been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I also have diarrhea and rapid pulse. I have severe head aches when on the "white pills". I have a tingling feeling in my left hand (I thought this was carpal tunal) but after reading this sight I beginning to doubt that. Can anyone relate or am I just paranoid?

I am a female, age 60, in good health, but have had adult asthma. I was put on Advair 500/50 when it first came out by physician in a different area than where I live now.

My symptoms which were very bad, because much better, however, I have had horrible side effects, and am not tapering off of the drug.

In 2 years and 5 months, I have had three leg injuries that have seriously torn my skin (it has become very thing, and fragile, and was never like that before). The medical care, due to poor healing has been over 10 months total.

My voice gets very hoarse, have gained abdominal weight, had rapid heartbeat, the purple bruises, and I rarely have a good night's sleep.

I took all the information to my current physician, and he said "let's get off of this"..........so I am going on 250/50 for a month, and then the lowest does for another month. I will say my rapid pulse was down to 80 from 110 in just two days.

Glad to have found this forum.

After reading everyones comments, I was so relieved to see that it wasn't "just me". I have been on levoxyl 100 for about 2 months now. For the past month I have been very nauseated, have sore joints and muscles, severe headaches, dizziness, rapid pulse, I am tired, but I feel like My head and heart are going to burst. My legs are weak too. It was just last night that I woke up gasping, and my heart was hammering so hard I could feel it in my head and neck. My arms and legs were so numb like pins and needles. I thought i would pass out. I was so scared, I've never been so scared and I even woke my husband up and told him I thought I needed to go to the ER. I did'nt know what to do. I felt like I was having a heart attack, and I even got dressed and did not sleep the whole night cause I was too scared to sleep. Today I went into the doctor and they said it was probly too high a dose and cut me down to 50. they said I cant take it for 2 days, to let the high amounts out of my system, but I don't know if I want to take it anymore. I am only 25 and I feel horrible: older. I don't want to do anything anymore, I'm tired and ill, and I have gained 5 pounds. I usually take herbs for every kind of illness, but I don't know if there is any alternative to this horrible pill. I saw some of you mention ARMOUR thyroid. Is this a natural alternative? Can anyone give me more information?? I am really tired right now, cause I have only had about an hour of sleep since 12:30am this morning, But im scared to sleep, lest I have a repeat of last night. I thought I would have a stroke or heart attack. Im glad I found this page. It is nice to know it isnt just me.

I only took Levoxyl for 2 1/2 months recently. I had strange sensations in my ankles, feet and hands plus a frequent pounding, rapid pulse. My hair fell out and is quite thin. My doctor insisted I remain on it. I logged on to www.safetyalerts.com today and was shocked to find that for many of the past few months, various dosages of Levoxyl has been recalled for contamination with an animal drug plus some other chemical. I refused to continue with the Levoxyl a month ago and sucessfully prevailed upon a new doctor to prescribe Armour Thyroid. I have been entirely side effct free and do feel so much better! It's too bad that patients have to be their own protectors of their health when doctors should be better informed!

I have experienced SEVERE stomach problems taking levoxyl. Since i stopped taking it, my stomach is back to normal. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience.I am NOW on ARMOUR THYROID...a natural product and feel NORMAL for the first time in three years. I hope the three years on levoxyl has not caused irrepairable damage to my digestive system!!

Experienced the side effect of llightheadedness, dizzy, fuzz like not all there when out. Xanax is the best drug for me for panic and anxiety attacks but doctors don't like to give it, it can be habit forming. 1/4 of a mg twice a day works for me, so why should I take Paxil or Prozac, Prozac had the same side effect as Paxillll, those mind altering drugs are drugs are just what the are called. Mind altering, lost sex drive, gained weight. Having problem with rapid pulse, have been off for 6 months now, will never go back. I have friends that use Prozac or Paxil and swear by them. These drugs are just what they are called drugs.
