Hi everyone, I have just read all thirty pages of posts to try to find some answers to my crazy reaction to prednisone. My thoughts are with you all since I have had an usually severe reaction to prednisone. I was on prednisone for 1 week in October 2008 at 60 mg/day for a sinus surgery. I am still having the following side effects at full force:
Axiety to the point I can't socialize
mood swings
hot/sweating even in freezing weather
whole body shakes
severe migraines
tooth sensitivity
muscle pains
extreme thirst (I drink almost 2 gallons/day)
hungry all the time
moon face
water retention around waist
acne
hair loss
rapid heart rate
dizziness
nightmares
night sweats
high blood pressure
high hear rate
I'm not exaggerating, my parent's can contend to that. I do have a history of having sever reactions to medication and I've had all the gland and blood tests which all check out. I never had a single one of these before the prednisone - I was a healthy 22 year old.
I was wondering if any could tell me when this hell will end - my job and well-being depends on it!

I'm also on Doxycycline Hyclate, 100 MG, twice daily. I've had slight mood swings, and lately I've been worrying about silly things for no apparent reason. Everytime I felt different body changes that normally didn't occur, I would think something is wrong with me when such thoughts were riduclous, especially since I'm 22 and extremely healthy. But I've also been having really weird lower abdomen pressure. It doesn't necessarily hurt, but it's quite annoying. Has anybody else had similar symptoms like this?
Ah, another thing, be careful not to get into the habit of not taking the full dosage of antibiotics prescribed. If you're taking it for an infection and you cease taking it prematurely, the organisms will develop a resistance to it and then it will be more difficult to get rid of.
Also, thanks for the courage to post your concerns. I wasn't aware that this antibiotic could cause such emotional and pshychological trouble! Now I feel a lot better about my own symptoms!

I have severe allergies and cronic sinusitis... like a lot of people on here I have taken all the allergy drugs they make for the past 9 years... Ive had tons of procedures done and sinus surgery last Feb '08. Nothing helps. Ive taken oral steriods many times but recently my new ENT decided to give me a Kenalog shot in Sept. Nothing was explained to me other than it was a steroid. The nurse put it in my left shoulder. I have had all the symptoms people are describing on here except the indent. I have been progressively getting sicker and feeling worse and worse over the past few months. I feel like I could go to bed and just stay there. Now this past Monday he gave me another Kenalog shot in my left shoulder. I heard something on a tv show that it causes depression so I jumped on this site and feel sick about all the messages I have read about people's terrible side effects. I feel like my doctor who I trusted let me down. I am so worried that my shoulder is going to have a big grey dent like everyone is describing on here. I am just so tired of being ill.

II'm a 54 year old male and I've been taking Lisinopril for about 24 months for moderately high BP (135/85). Initially, I was fatigued late morning, but that seemed to go away in a month or two. Having a previous back condition, I didn't blame the tightness in my glutes and legs on the pill or the extreme morning soreness, but now I wonder. Also, in six months I gained about 50 pounds with no change in lifestyle (205 to 255). I read in a few of the Drug Co. sites that this is a rare effect, but not in any postings here. Anyone else have this problem?
I also seem to have developed an explosive type of temper that I don't recall before, blowing up at minor things, then it quickly passes. Anybody?
Where the drug initially lowered my BP to 120/75, with the weight gain I need the drug to keep it in the neighborhood of the original problem (140/85). If I miss a dose it spikes to 170/115 or higher, so I'm basically forced to take it or another BPM where originally I had a very minor problem. I thought this was a common pill that was described as relatively benign, but I' starting to realize that's not the case at all.

First I am someone who believes in the less drugs a person has to take, the better off they are. I will go days with a headache before I take an asprin. Recently, on Oct 19, 2008 I was prescribed Bactrim DS and Keflex for what DR. said looked like staph infection in ear. I had a cyst or a pimple or something in my ear that burst the night before so I went to the Urgent care to have it checked out (should never have gone to the doctor for this). Against my better judgment I filled the prescription and took the antibiotics for the first 6 days out of the 10 day course. Honestly I think hydrogen peroxide would have been fine for the ear issue and no need for overkill with antibiotics. I informed this Doctor that in 2005 I had been bitten by a dog and was given a double dose of antibiotics for that, I had a slight reaction and I wasn't sure he should be putting me on another double dose of antibiotics because of this. He went on and on about drug resistant staph strains these days. I stopped taking the drugs on day 6 as I could tell I was going to have problems. The next day my left eye swelled and I was itchy all over my body. The day after that, woke up, left eye swelled again and still really itchy all over. I tried calling the Urgent Care no one answer the phone. Called the pharmacy told them what was happening. They told me to stop taking the drugs which I already had done and to take benadryl. Started benadryl. Next day swollen left eye, itchy all over and now I had two hives, one on my upper left leg/pelvic area, and on on the right side of my waist. Went back to the Urgent Care I told them this is due to the antibiotics they prescribed, note it in my chart and find out what they prescribed 3 years earlier when I was bitten by the dog. Was told to take benedryl or Claritin and work on this from the inside and use hydrocortizone creams and oatmeal baths for the itching on the outside. Started all of this, but nothing helped with the itching. Next morning woke up, my eye was not swollen, but I had hives all over my body (mainly on my butt, legs, lower torso, and scalp) and really intense itching everywhere. My skin temperature felt extremely warm when I touched myself. I also started wheezing a bit but grabbed an outdated inhaler for Provental took a few puffs and the wheezing went away. Next morning, woke up now the hives were on the left side of my face, back, moving onto the chest, a few on the stomach, lower torso covered, legs covered, moving onto my ankles, scalp covered, and the left side of my bottom lip was really swollen. My left ear was flaming red (both ears hurt badly) and was swollen to twice it's normal size. The itching was unbearable. I took photos of myself, popped a Claritin, and a benadryl and knocked myself out for 4 hours. When I woke up I still looked the same (like s*#t) but the itching was finally gone. I took myself and the photos back to the Urgent Care. The doctor could not believe I looked like that as he had seen me two days prior with only two small hives and a slightly swollen eye. I was given a shot of epinephrine and am now taking prednisone and was told if I have any more breathing issues go straight to the ER. That night the hives moved to my wrist and palms of my hands. The palms were extremely painful, swollen, and flaming red. They were itchy, but if I touched or rubbed them, they burned like they were on fire. Pretty much over the course of this, any of the areas that were nuclear red burned like they were on fire (one day it was my knees, one day my ankle, three or four times it was the ears, the palms continuous for two days). I went to bed that night with my palms resting on bags of ice. Yesterday woke up, had small hives all over my face (luckily no swollen lip or eye), hives were now on my neck, moving onto my arms, hands, and feet, a couple on my chest, and they are still all over the rest of my body. At lunch time yesterday (Friday I started sweating behind my neck and I took it as a good sign since I had not broke a sweat in the past 5 days and my skin did not feel like it was 5, 10, 15 degrees hotter then normal when I touched it (other then my flaming red palms and ankle which still really hurt). It is Saturday November 1, 2008 and this is my first day (trial day) not taking Claritin or Benadryl but still on the prednisone. I still feel very drained due to the previous six days of hell (sinus hurts as well). I am pretty ticked off as I missed a concert on Thursday night because of this. Couldn't exactly go to the event with hives all over my body, especially on my face, swollen lip, and feeling really drained.
The Urgent Care got back to me on Friday regarding the antibiotics I was prescribed when I suffered the dog bite. I was prescribed Augmentin and Bactrim DS. I am trying to find out from an ear nose throat doctor what he prescribed for me right after the dog bite and I will have a list of all the antibiotics to potentially stay away from. After the dog bite incident and taking the antibiotics to clear up the infection in my leg it felt like I was having sinus issues (in hindsight I thing it was an antibiotic reaction as I am having those same symptoms now) so I went to a sinus doctor. He prescribe and antibiotic thinking I had a sinus infection. I told him I just finished a few days before a double round of antibiotics for a dog bite (how on earth could I possibly have a sinus infection?). Stupid me I should have waited for the lab results to come back before I started taking that third round of antibiotics. Of course I did not have a sinus infection. Took a round of antibiotics for nothing, but then had a swollen eye issue for the next 6 to 9 months to deal with along with trying to get all the residual antibiotics out of my system, get rid of the yeast infections I now had due to the antibiotics killing everything good in my body, and reestablishing the good flora and fauna back into my intestinal system. It took months to recover from that.
I am concerned how many months or years will I be suffering from the consequences of this unnecessary round of antibiotics? Will my eye periodically swell for the next 6 to 9 months? Will I continue to get hives? Have I suffered any permanent internal organ damage due to this? Will I die the next time a doctor prescribes me antibiotics? Pretty positive I will not let any doctor prescribe to me the Bactrim DS ever again as that one looks like it could be the one I am allergic too, but I do not know if I am allergic to the others.
Pretty much people If any DR tries to prescribe to you Bactrim DS or one of it's relatives under a different name, my advise is to insist on some other type of antibiotic as this one the harmful side effects outway the good.

I am a 35 year old female. Previous Dr. had been watching my BP for about 4 months and asking me to lose some weight - I am about 15 pounds overweight. Changed doctors due to insurance and new Dr. prescribed Lisinopril right away, 5 days ago. By the 4th day I was feeling tired, more than usual, and went to bed really early. Today, the 5th day, through out the day, I started feeling pressure on my chest, a need to breath deeply with some resistance, a weird sensation running from the heart across my chest toward my throat, anxiety thinking I was having symptoms of a heart attack. I feel slight pain running down my left arm. So, tonight before going to bed, thinking, do I have to tell someone what I am feeling? Should I go to the ER? I decided to look up side effects for this drug. And to my surprise I ran into this site. I am sooo glad to read that so many people are going through the same thing and have not had a heart attack. As I sit here, I have chest pain, and anxiety, and I was supposed to take the 5th pill tonight, but I am not going to. I will call my doctor 1st thing tomorrow and ask her to switch medications. Thank you for posting. This has helped me make a quick decision not to continue with this drug.

I have been on Lisinopril for many years, and always had a small cough.
This summer the cough and clearing of the throat became worse. I mentioned this to my chiropractor and he said my body has built up a resistance to this drug and greatly affecting my throat to the point where I may not be able to breathe. There have been many times, this summer, when I couldn't seem to get enough air, like I couldn't breathe deeply enough to fill my lungs. Then at times it would feel like a feather was in my throat and I would have a terrible coughing spell. I have sensed that my memory has been effected and I have had more periods of depression.
This is not the medicine for me.

Your website helped me know that I was not dying or crazy when I was prescribed to Bactrim. I went to an Urgent care facility to treat a UTI. I have had them in the past and figured it would be a quick fix. The prescribed Bactrim twice per day for 7 days. After the first day I developed a sore throat. After the second day my body began to ache a bit. After the third day, I almost collapsed from faintness. I stopped taking the medication because of how it was making me feel and since I saw NUMEROUS online complaints (like this site) on how awful the medication was. I though I would feel better after stopping the medication but it only got worse. That is when I developed a fever with severe flu like symptoms and also vaginal sores. I was confined to my bed for two days and this was two days after I stopped the medication. After day three of no medication I began to feel better. Today (day 5 of no medication) I went to see my PCP( which is an internal medicine doctor who I should have just went to to begin with). He said I would be fine and I am allergic to Sulpha drugs. He also stated that mosts UTI's clear after three days of treatment. In addition he stated that most women have resistance and reactions to Bactrim and that Cipro would have been a better choice. Although Bactrim is a lot cheaper than Cipro. I would NEVER recommend Bactrim to anyone!!! I thought I was dying! I am getting tested for STD's incase that is why I have sores (highly doubtful) but I'll let you know.

I took Topamax for my migraines following a significant car accident. All I can say is this medication didn't help me at all. In fact, it made my migraines 10x WORSE! Before, when I had a migraine, they were debilitating and would last up to 48 hours. Once I was on Topamax I had a migraine that would not go away. It was almost a month of me being out of work so that I could be weened off this medication and feel better. Now I take something called Axert which you take at the first sign of a migraine. It is my miracle drug. It is not a narcotic like every other doctor seemed to want to give me and would make my migraine go away within an hour. However, I have noticed I have built up a little bit of a resistance to it!

Flonase worked very well for my allergies for about 3 years then I developed a resistance to it. I can honestly say I don't think I had any bad side effects from it.

Yes,
I slowly developed oral thrush over the course of the last 6 months since starting Nasonex. I blamed it on my Flovent, so I stopped the Flovent about 2 months ago, and the oral thrush just kept getting worse even after treatment with anti-fungals. So I stopped the Nasonex (the only other drug I take) 3 days ago, and now my oral thrush and burning in my mouth and hard palate is totally gone away, I feel tons better. I also, since taking Nasonex, have gained quite a bit of weight in my lower belly and I am suspicious of Cushings. I will not take Nasonex ever again. I did not have this problem with Flonase, just I developed a resistance to Flonase.

I'm still trying to find out if my symptoms are associated with Yasmin, but I STRONGLY believe they are. I can't believe I didn't pu the pieces together sooner. I've been on Yasmin close to 4 years... it was pretty new when I started taking it for my PCOS. For the last two years (yes, two years!) I've been experiencing extreme nausea and upset stomach and my resistance to illness/allergies has been non-existent. I've noticed that I feel depressed and lack a lot of energy. My sex drive wanes... sometimes it's nill and other times I can't get enough. I've had endoscopies, colonoscopies, blood work, etc... but nothing ever came back conclusive on anything particular. After my last cycle, it took me about a week to get my new pack and guess what? I felt somewhat normal! My sex drive came back and my gastrointestinal issues subsided. I'm going to stop taking it completely and see if it solves my "mystery illnesses".

Generally begin to experience relief from sinus infections after 5 doses, nearly 24 hours' worth (of 250mg 3X daily). Amoxicillin typically exacerbates viral/fungal type symptoms that occur when I have any kind of infection or lowered resistance (two or three small pimples on tip of nose, itchy scalp, mild tinea pedis between 4th and 5th toes which I never get otherwise, and slight flaring of a nearly invisible planter's wart which I've had since I was a teen. Amoxicillin also provokes a mild depression similar to pms symptoms, potential weepiness if provoked, and, in the last two years (perhaps because I may be--at 51-- approaching menopause), hot flashes. Because I can develop extremely serious sinus and/or impacted sinus infections, I'm glad for various antibiotics (1-3 times annually), but I can't say that I always like the side affects.

Hi, I was a healthy middle age women, until Leaquin 750 mg. I was diagnosed with Severe Bronchitis, was given Levaquin 750 mg. for 7 days. Took this pill for 3 or 4 days. Then one day at work, I felt like the upper left side of my body and face was on fire, very dizzy, and started passing out. The ambulance was called they found my blood pressure was way over 200, face bright red, hives on right side of face, very light headed. They checked blood every 4 hours, IV's of all different meds, Z pac, steriods, etc. Stayed there for 4 days, under going different tests, all came back great, sent me home and said dehydration, I do not believe so.......I am still lighted and in like a Brain Fog and still do not feel right since taking this Levaquin. I am seeing my Doctor tomorrow and he better have a good answer for this nightmare drug and how long the side affects last. I need to feel normal, again........If you have this drug, PLEASE do not take, I am not a Doctor so I cannot tell you what to do, but check it out real good first..........

Hi all! Thank you for posting your stories, otherwise I would think that I am going nuts and my doctor would probably agree with that diagnosis before admitting that this is not the thing for me!! I had my Mirena placed July '07, approx. 8 weeks after having my third child. My hair started falling out by the handful (which I attributed to giving birth recently, but this never happened with the other two). The strings poked my husband's penis everytime we had sex, which was painful and irritating for him. Intercourse is very painful for me! I bleed and have a sore uterus for days after sex or even a hard aerobic workout. I have absolutely no sex drive and I am a very sexual person normally. My stomach is unusually bloated and I can not lose weight regardless of how hard I am working out or how little I am eating. I do not have a period and couldn't tell you when my last one occurred. My doctor has been so stubborn about removing this thing! He keeps telling me to give it time. I can't find my strings and am having it removed this week. This must be one huge money machine, because the resistance to remove it has been crazy. I believe that the Dr.s must report every time they have to remove the Mirena prematurely and what the side effects are/were. Good luck ladies and just remember...this is YOUR body and you know when something is not right!

I was prescribed the Cipro, 250 for UTI....within 24 hours was having a headache which did go away within 3 days, cleared the UTI...made sure I took the Cipro with meals. Within 1 week of being off of the Cipro started having extreme stomach issues....burning, irritation.... took approx 2 more weeks taking Heartburn MD supplements with meals to "heal up" the stomach lining from the Cipro. Took Amoxicillin for past UTI's now the docs don't want to give Amox only Cipro. Was told by the doc that the UTI's have managed to build a resistance to the Amoxicillin.....I could understand that if you took Amoxicillin regularly. Hmmmm!

I'm having serious side effects currently. The onset of the side effects began after taking Lamictal for over 2 months. I started slowly on 25 mg and gradually increased to 200. I felt a great improvement in Bipolar disorder-mood swings- at 100mg but was told that is not the theraputic dose, so we increased to 200mg.
I had no side effects until the rash began to appear. At first only on legs, then arms, then neck, then face...and surprisingly in private areas. Unbearable itching. Rash continued to rage even after a pack of steroids. Swelling became apparrent in face and entire body. Slight difficulty breathing. Went to the ER and received another dose of steroids intravenously. The rash continues to improve but is still extremely itch. The swelling improved for a couple of days but is back. Had one day of severe headache. It has been 14 days and today I am experiencing blurred vision in the left eye, and new swelling in the tongue.
I sit at home with an Epi Pen next to me waiting to hear back from the doctor.
All of this is so unfortunate because I felt more stable than I have in years while on the medication. I'm feeling very concerned about my continuing side effects. Don't know what to expect.

I have been taking adderall 30mg immediate release twice a day for a little over 2 years now.
My hair won't grow. I have gone from a size 12 in women's to a size 0 in juniors. I am 36 years old and the bones in my face and body show through my skin.
I get very dizzy and I get anxiety really bad.
My toenails are paper thin as are my fingernails.
I have pushed everyone in my family away. I don't even play with my children anymore.
I am currently seeing a counselor once a week to help me with issues, which I hope will help me get off of this medication.
PLEASE DO NOT BEGIN TAKING THIS AS IT IS SO HARD TO GET OFF OF IT.
As another person stated, people I work with think I am on crack!

I have been on ADVAIR for approx. 1/2 a year. At 1st it seemed to help & still is with the asthma. But now I seem to have a real low resistance to viral infections or at least sinus related stuffiness. I have had a nasal problem with stuffiness/post nasal drip/ears popping & ringing and loss of taste for almost 2 months now. I went to my allergist's P.A. 10 days ago & got a script for amoxicillin 875 mg & I still am having issues. They thought I may have a sinus infection. Is anyone else experiencing nasal congestion & rhinitis while on ADVAIR?

Took leviquin 500 for 8 days before I realized what was happening to me. Side effects included: severe panic, altered mental state, constant sleep, loss of appetite, pounding heart rate. After 2 trips to the ER no help was provided. I stoped the Leviquin early (was supposed to take it for 3 wks) and immediately started feeling better. The anxiety is much less but still present and I still sleep all the time.
Has anyone had similar experiences and, more importantly, how long does this last?
Please help!

I switched to Ovcon about 6 months ago when I told my doctor I had no libido on Mircette. Well, Ovcon definitely changed that; in fact, sometimes my libido was out of control. However, my sex drive wasn't the only thing that made me feel aggressive. On Ovcon I was ANGRY at everything and everyone and I'd fall into a depression sometimes as well. I was also anxious. The mood in general caused so much resistance from doing the things I love to do most. I thought the anger was a product of living in Queens, NY, and just being annoyed at the people here, but it was so magnified; I literally felt like I wanted to strangle someone. Not only that, but I was working out more intensely and more frequently than ever and I was still the heaviest I had ever been. The weight gain made me frustrated, angry, and even more depressed and it became a vicious cycle.
My doctor switched me to Yasmin, so I would still have a sex drive, and to decrease the chances of gaining weight. So far, both my body and my mood feel much lighter.

I began taking Welbutrin XL three weeks ago. (I took prozac for years and loved it, but then built up resistance.) Since starting the Welbutrin, I have been extremely aggitated. The smallest things throw me into a rage. I throw things, yell at my kids and hate everything in general. The worst part is that I really do not care if I hurt someone. I am sure that in the last three weeks, my kids have come to hate me or at least hate being around me. I was hoping it would get better, but I do not see that happening. I called my doctor today and she is switching me to Lexapro.

I had Mirena placed 2 months ago. After experiencing all of the symptoms you have all talked about, I went in and demanded it be removed, despite my physicians resistance. She said that all of my symptoms sounded like a thyroid problem. I got my TSH tested, at the same time Mirena was removed. Just today got a call from my Dr. and my thyroid level is through the roof!!! Normal range is up to 4.0 My thyroid level is 131!!!!! I 100% believe that Mirena directly impacted this result, as the symptoms did not start until Mirena was placed. OMG!! 131!! I HIGHLY do not recommend Mirena....
