Hi, just wanted to follow up. I HAD my Mirena in for roughly 3 months. I had it removed after a lot of speculation. I must admit, I feel a lot better. My hair is no longer falling out by the handfuls, my moods have evened back out, joint pain is still there but not nearly as bad. The weight thing...I lost 10 of the 25 pounds within the first month, and have not lost an ounce since then despite a strict diet and moderate exercise. But, the odd thing is, that 3 days post removal, I started my period, bled HEAVY for 4 days and back to normal flow on days 5 thru 8 (yes, 8) but now, a month and twelve days later...no period, and I'm right back to retaining water in my hands and feet, and again have the bloated gut, with lots of cramping. It's very odd...

If anyone can offer some insight, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm actually dreaming again!!! It's awesome. Sleep is good!!

And another thing, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of women are saying they had theirs inserted more than a year ago...the "IUD" Mirena hasn't been on the market that long. The previous Mirena was a coil, not a silicone IUD. I've been told by one of the doctors at the hospital I work at, that it's more so a reaction to the silicone than to the hormone...food for thought...

And, along with the few lucky women who have been successful with their Mirena endeavor, I also have 2 friends who absolutely LOVE theirs! No side effects, no weight gain, nothing! That's why I decided to get mine, but I knew within a matter of days that something was going on. I wasn't my self, and after never in my life struggling with weight, I all of a sudden was outgrowing all of my clothes. It wasn't pleasant. So again, congratulations to the lucky ones, and for all others, my sympathy. Removal is quite simple, no pain at all. It was over before I could even hold my breath. Felt similar, but not even as bad, as a pap.

I've finally had the mirena removed - about 2 months ago. I'd had a very light period around the time that it was removed, but none since. My body aches a little, still, but it's more tolerable that it had been before. Initially i could NOT stop urinating! i lost easily 3 lbs of nothing but water weight in the first couple of weeks. As excited as i was about that, it's a bit at a standstill now, losing the weight, but overall, my tolerance has grown, my sex drive has returned and mood swings have drastically been more controllable. I enjoy playing with my daughters again, and i've been able to get a lot more around the house cleaned. I feel about 70% better now and i'll take that any day over what i had been feeling. I do still get melancholy every now and then but not as severely.
in the past 2 week i've started taking vitamins - w/ a little extra b12 and calcium w/ D - to try and help my body balance out. that definitely makes a difference in how i feel through the day.
1 thing i can't get over is the constant thirsty feeling and almost a copper taste that lingers in my mouth, but i can only assume that after retaining water my body is re-adjusting to the intake/release ratio. good thing i like water and tea :) over all - i love having the mirena! ----- REMOVED!

I can't believe that I finally found the solution to my problem! I didn't know what was happening to me its like I am a whole different person.
My side effects:
mood swings
weight gain
decreased sex drive dramatically
depression
not caring about anyone
feeling like i am the biggest loser in the world
i cry at everything
I take the pill at night and it seems like night time is the worst time. I cry to my boyfriend about how I want more attention from him when he gives me the most attention ever lately. I cry about the stupidest things and he even said somethings wrong with you emotionally.
It's effecting our relationship because I been on Yaz for years and up until the last 2 months i been a complete nut case. I am a freaking psycho and hate everyone. I am so glad I found out what it was and I am stopping this and changing my birth control or just stopping it completely for a little while because I want my life back before I ruin it all.

Signed the Mirena petition which all of you should too. So many people who are on it with no side effects as well as doctors do not believe us and it is very frustrating. Both my OB/GYN and the neurologist I have been seeing don't think the Mirena is responsible for my dizziness/foggy head, anger/anxiety/moodiness, body tingling, however my symptoms started exactly 3 weeks after I got Mirena inserted. Never had these issues before. Have had the Mirena removed and hope these horrible symptoms go away!

I was on Yasmin for only a month in November 2008. I quickly got off of it because of the side effects. I wear contact lenses, yet my vision was getting blurry. I was training for a marathon, yet I was gaining weight (and it wasn't the muscle mass I was also gaining from training). I began to have horrible headaches, retaining water and I even got these little red rashes on my arms and breasts. At the time, I didn't know that Yasmin was causing all of this and ruining my life! Now I know it's Yasmin. I went to my doctor, she performed various lab tests (including liver, kidney, thyroid) and I am perfectly healthy. So I did major research on Yasmin and discovered all of my ailments were on there as side effects. My advice for anyone experiencing anything similar is to either change the dosage or just get off of it. It's not worth it. Yasmin is the devil! I mean think about it, we are messing with the natural way our body's hormones function. Oh yeah, and not to mention that I started losing some of my hair as well.

Within one hour after my first dose of Lisinopril I was having severe sinus congestion and mild dizziness. Since this seemed like a rather mild problem I naively continued to take my 10 mg dose every day. At first my blood pressure did drop a little, but within two weeks it had begun to climb back to the 150/90 range that I was having when it was prescribed. In addition I soon began to experience intermittent diarrhea, headache, vague moving pains in my abdomen, itching which interferred with my sleep, leg cramps, heart pain, anxiety and continuing increase in blood pressure. After calling my doctor's office and explaining all this to the nurse I received a return call telling me I was to DOUBLE my dose and assuring me that I had not been on the drug long enough for it to take effect. Especially concerning to me was the statement that the heart pain was because of my high blood pressure and that doubling the dose would resolve this. Foolishly, I did in fact double the dose for a week. During that time all of my symptoms worsened until I awoke one night with severe chest pain. My husband took my blood pressure and it was 220/120...............this as I was lying prone in bed after having just awakened from two hours sleep. At this point I was certain that my problem was more the drug than the original elevated blood pressure. I quit taking the drug immediately and within two days I was feeling better and my blood pressure was down the the original elevated level. I have now changed doctors, however I have little hope that the change will help as he has put me on a different medication ( which makes my ankles swell) and tells me that if the swelling continues he will put me on lisinopril with hydrochlorothiazide..............he does not believe that any of the symptoms I was having were related to that drug.

I've been on Loestrin for about 4 years and have not really had any problems until about 6 months ago when I moved to a new city, gained some weight, and started to get unbearable breast pain/sensitivity. My gyno put me on 5 days of a pill to rid my body of water retention and my breast sensitivity was gone. But it returned after this short treatment. He is now suggesting that I take a month off of birth control and see if that fixes the problem. If so, he wants me to try the Nuvaring, but those side effects scare me. Anyone had the same problem?

Hi everyone, I just came upon all this yesterday and can't believe it! I have been thinking I am going crazy and have been going down a shame spiral! I have had the Mirena for about a year after the birth of my twins. When I first got the Mirena I really didn't seem to like it...I had weird bleeding, cramping, headaches but my doctor told me there were really no side effects except for the on and off again bleeding so I didn't think much of it. Soon, I started having heart palpitations and weird panicky feelings when I would be out places which I have never had before. I wrote it all off due to the rough twin pregnancy and moved on. Soon, I really started worrying something was wrong with me because of all these weird things, the headaches and heart palpitations and panicky feelings, also I started feeling foggy like I was walking around feeling out of it and sometimes a little dizzy or something just having weird head feelings. We always had in the back of our minds that it could be the Mirena but never really took action. Just for the past couple of months things have gotten much worse. Those panicky feelings really got worse and combined with anxiety and sad and crazy depression thoughts and feelings. I also have been feeling this weird nervousness.....even in my quietest moments of my day. This is so out of my normal character and I feel like I can't even remember what I used to feel like. I have been to my PCP who gave me medication for anxiety and have had a hard time adjusting because I just can't believe all of this craziness and I just keep thinking is the problem really my IUD? Then my mom came upon this because she just felt that me feeling this way is just to weird and I feel like I relate to all of your stories! I have truly been feeling like I am going crazy...and I have never felt this way before...ever. I called my doctor yesterday to talk with her and I am going to have this removed...although I am a little nervous about the after effects. I just keep thinking a year ago I was fine.. and now look at me...I am on anti-depressants...how did this happen?? I know that I have stress but there is no reason for me to be feeling this way. I would love to hear about anyone else who felt this way and got the IUD removed and how that went. I know that I probably won't feel better right away...but I am hoping with time I can forget all of this and move on.

I was prescribed this drug in hopes of keeping thyroid nodules and goiter from growing larger. My TSH levels have always been in the normal range throughout my life, so the theory that "normal TSH' means a working, normal thyroid is absolutely untrue. I am a prime example of a person who's numbers have always remained normal and yet their thyroid does not work properly. I have decided to discontinue this drug after 3 months of use. The weight is packing on faster than I can diet and exercise it off. My face is puffy, my stomach bloated and looking pregnant, and now retaining water. Anyone who does not believe that Synthroid causes weight gain, I welcome you to try this drug. It does the exact thing it claims it is combating. I am not hypo with levels of 1.07 and yet something odd is occurring within my body with this synthroid. I'm praying that if I stop the drug I might return to some form of normalcy soon.

I have been on Loestrin 24fe for the past three years. The first two years were great; no period since Dec 06, it's very rare that I have any spotting. Since June 2008, my health has gone down hill. I have had extreme weight gain (20 lbs), retaining fluid, fatigue, terrible migraines, memory has gotten poor, lack of concentration, depression has gotten worse, very very moody and will cry at the least little thing. I have also experience eye floaters and eye twitching. My dr. wants to change my BC to Yaz, but the horror stories are the same. At this point, I really don't know what to do. I have been on BC for 18 yrs total. When I first started taking Loestrin, it was wonderful.....up until last year. I am still taking it, not sure if I should switch to another type or totally go off of BC to give my body a rest.

I took Prednisone for about 6 weeks for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome brought on by an allergic reaction to Ciprofloxacin. My main complaint on taking it was extreme hunger--not for sweets or junk, but for real food. I was also very moody and I think I must have been really mean to my husband. At the time, I thought I was being reasonable, but looking back, I can see I wasn't. It kept me awake, as well. Without the Prednisone, I might have died, because the extreme, constant itching with the Stevens-Johnson would have driven me completely nuts. My main complaint is that almost two months after quitting taking the Prednisone, I continue to have a moon face, facial swelling, and holding water elsewhere to the extent that I can hardly tie my shoes or even breathe. I would have expected that to get better by now instead of worse.

I just finished a 10 day (4xday) prescription of Flagyl (250 mg) prescribed by my Gastro doctor for treatment of (SIBO) Severe Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Two days after finishing Flagyl I broke out in hives all over my body and my upper eyelids were very swollen. Now my dermatologist has me on Zyrtec and Prednisone. Has anyone broken out with hives and had swollen eyes from taking Flagyl?

I'm on my 3rd month of Yaz and I couldn't be happier. I was on ortho-tricyclen for a year and a half but my PMS was getting horrible and I was retaining water like you wouldn't believe (I was actually gaining 10 pounds of water!). Once I switched I get no PMS at all. No aches, no soreness (my boobs would get unbelievably sore and would sting if touched or bumped even in the slightest way), no mood swings. I didn't have any breakthrough bleeding (I'm wondering if it's because I finished my last pack of ortho and went on to yaz on schedule?) and haven't had any side effects EXCEPT for stomach pains the day before I get my period, but it's not so bad that I can't go on with my day (and truthfully, prior to yaz, my stomach gave me problems the whole week before my period -- and that has ceased.). I know some people experience bad things while on yaz, but I have to say, it's working really well for me. Everyone reacts differently to medicines. Read the sheet and report anything to your doctor.

I recently began taking Loestrin 24 Fe because I actually stopped having my period. I have lost 80 pounds over the last 2 1/2 years. The Doctor explained that the weight loss had affected my hormone levels and advised me to take this pill. However, she also assured me that I would not gain weight. I have been taking the pill for two weeks, and I have already gained 4 pounds. I am a faithful Weight Watcher member and looking back over what I ate the past 14 days and how much I worked out - the weight gain does not seem possible.

Doing some independent research, this pill has the lowest levels of estrogen, supposedly meaning that it shouldn't cause weight gain like other oral contraceptives with higher estrogen levels. However, the scale shows different results and I also feel like I am retaining water. I don't want to appear "vain," but I have worked very hard for a very long time to lose 80 pounds. I do not want to see it creep back on because of medication, especially when I am only using it for regulation, not pregnancy prevention.

From reading earlier postings, I know some other people have had similar experiences. Did your Doctor change the type of birth control? Did you simply stop taking the pill and lose the weight? Does anyone have any advice? I really appreciate the help!

I started taking Trivora in June, 2008. I had to stop taking it after 2-1/2 weeks because I was extremely hungry, tired and was had gained 5 to 7lbs during the 2.5 weeks (same systems as if you were really pregnant). The only very nice thing about Trivora was that my boobs looked great!!! I am a b-cup and it went up to a full "C". Of'course that was probably due to the weight/water gain. I didn't feel good at all. I have never taken this type of birth control pill. I took it because it was an alternative to the name brand birth control pills that I normally take. I made a bad decision in getting these pill because I was saving money. I am not sexually active but, I wanted my periods to be regulated. Boy... I should have never made the decision to switch my name brand. On another positive note... my period for the month of June was very light, painless and short. However... my period for the month of July... still has not arrived. It feels like I am going to start but, I never do. Keep in mind... I am not sexually active... and I have never, ever missed a period aside from my two children that are 17 and 12 years old. I know that the Trivora pill has caused a side effect that I was not expecting. Since taking the pill I have gained approx. 10lbs in one month. Feeling bloated all the time because my period still has not started is something that no one wants. Yes... I feel depressed, stomach pains, nausea and I have frequents headaches. I would not recommend this pill to anyone. Hopefully my period will start so I can feel normal and not retaining water and have a constant bloating feeling.

If you are just starting BC,

YOU MUST GIVE IT AT LEAST THREE MONTHS TIME.

BC is a medication. It's a man-made drug. Of course you will have side-effects and probably bad ones while you are just starting it. I really can't say that enough.

When I started Loestrin 24 Fe, it was my first time on BC and I had all the terrible side effects previous posters have had, especially breast tenderness. I had to wear a sports bra at all times, it hurt that badly!

But after that three month mark, everything improved. I stopped retaining water, and actually LOST weight. This pill has helped to regulate my appetite. My acne that I'd had for 7 years disappeared. My periods stopped being weeks long and now last only 3 days at most.

So, until we can create a BC Pill/Injection for men (wouldn't that be more practical anyway to begin with? Get someone on this right away!), we ladies have to endure Short-term side effects associated with the Pill.

A couple of years ago had chest pains then i a saw cardiologist, I was fine, Norvac side affect. If your legs hurt check to see if your ankles are swollen it they are you are retaining water. Water retention= water around your heart, let your doctor know right away, get additional water pill to remove excess fluid. Use to be in the Medical Profession. If in doubt call Dr. and Pharmist(knows better than Dr., he knows meds)

I started taking Jolessa after having been off birth control for about 1.5 years. Previously I was on Mircette and didn't have any problems. Within a few days of starting Jolessa, I felt depressed and not myself. I felt like I was retaining water and felt 10 pounds heavier. I thought maybe my body had to get use to the hormones, but after 3 weeks of side effects, I couldn't take it anymore and went off it. Within a few days of stopping Jolessa, I felt like myself again. After reading many of these posts, I plan on trying ortho tri-cylcen lo, as it seems people have fewer side effects with that.

At first I didn't gain weight from Seroquel. but after 3 years on it all of a sudden I am retaining fluid and gained 15 lbs in 2 months all water. I have stopped cold turkey on Seroquel and of course I am not sleeping well and it doesn't help that I am up about 7 times a night peeing because of all the water weight that is coming out. I think Seroquel is more addictive than Xanax or other drugs - the sleeping part was very good but who wants to keep retaining water and go from a size 12 to a 16 and it isn't stopping so I figured I would try stopping the Seroquel to see what happens = so far I think the weight is coming off (only 2 days off Seroquel) Doctors don't care about the weight gain. I wish I never went on it.

I hated it, I was always tired, retaining water so horribly that if I pushed on my leg a mold of my fingerprint would remain. I had sore breasts and my skin was a bit more oily. Loss of libido as well. I changed to Levora and within a month my legs were back to normal, my chest is no longer sore and my libido is back.

I'm 6 weeks post yasmin. I have gained five pounds since I got off the pill and it seems to increase every week. Did this happen to anyone else?

also, while I was on the pill, (2 years) my hair fell out in huge clumps everyday. I had zero libido and my breasts were non-existent. I was extremely irritable and angry for about one week every month prior to getting the period.

Since I've been off the pill, I feel better overall. Even the breasts came back somewhat right away. Minus the one day of terrible headache and nausea. I'm wondering, why am I gaining so much weight so quickly and will they come off? am I just retaining water or is my metabolism slowing down? My diet is the same as before.

did anyone else experience the similar?

Hi, it's Joodles giving an update.

I am on day 38 of being off Yasmin. So far I have had 2 periods, the first after stopping the pill for 4 days and then again the 3rd of July. I have had only slight cramping (more like a stomach ache) but a heavy flow lasting 5-6 days.

I have gained 8 pounds since stopping Yasmin and I have been experiencing swollen ankles and feet. Has anyone else been retaining water since going off the pill? It is driving me nuts!

must say that my heart rate has returned to normal and my bloodpressure is almost back to normal.

PLEASE let me know if the water retention is happening to anyone else!

Thanks,

Joodles
