I have had Mirena for over a year now. I have been battling hair loss thinking it was from stress. My Dr. put me on Prozac and recommended that I even use Rogaine. Never once did they lead me to believe it could be from the Mirena!! I felt like I was losing my mind. Bouts of rage, constant hair loss, acne, weight gain. I am meeting with my OBGYN on the 11th to discuss removal. I am hoping these side effects subside rather quickly. I just don't know if the hair will return

I have had Mirena for a little over a year now. I thought the hair loss was just from stress in my life so I have been on Prozac and using Rogaine to help with the hair loss - with no luck. Now after reading all of these posts, it makes sense that it is from the Mirena. I have had to horrific mood swings and bouts of rage, hair loss, weight gain and acne. I am scheduled to see my OBGYN for removal on the 11th. I am hoping that the hair loss will at least stop. My stress is from worrying about my hair loss, so I might even be able to come off the prozac and live a normal life. Please post if you have had your removed and the side effects subsided. Thanks!

i discovered that i had hyperthyroidism which was from grave's disease and grave's thyroid eye disease in jan. 2009. at the end of march i had my thyroid removed. never let anyone use the radiation treatment if it is in your eyes. my surgeon said if we had waited another week i would have been dead. they started me on 75 mcg of levoxyl. it made me mean, i prayed to God to let me die in my sleep every night. the dosage was changed to 88 mcg. my hair was falling out by the handfuls. i kept calling my dr. and being told it was normal. i lost 75% of my hair mass almost to non reversible. i have been on appearex and women's rogaine once a day and am using nioxin hair cleanser and conditioner for 2 months. i have new growth thank goodness. my toes almost froze off my feet, the headaches cannot even be described, i gained 40 lbs, this will be the 3rd time in 7 mos. they need to change my dosage to 100 mcg. my body cannot take it. today i am starting synthroid. until i found this site today i had no idea most of my agony was from levoxyl and it's side effects. thanks so much for all the information. good luck to everyone.

Wow. I am in awe. I lost my mother June 7, 2009. I plunged into severe depression. I was already on Paxil. I started the generic brand of Wellbutrin (Bupropion) around June 30th. I noticed a big difference neurologically. But on to why I am posting... I noticed last week my hands were shaking uncontrollably and I could not stop them. I ran out of Wellbutrin and waited a couple of days to pick it up. I noticed a lot of the symptoms stopped. I have also had off the chart vertigo. I am talking extreme. I had tremors this morning and thought something was under the pillows on my sofa and jumped up to look. I then wondered if I was going crazy. I then went to my desk to work and crossed my legs on top the desk and the tremors started again.

I had thick bit fat hair naturally curly hair (which I still have most of it) . I started seeing hair everywhere in the car seat, the desk chair, on the sofa, the floor blah blah. Everywhere! If pulled on the end to check for split ends and the freaking hair came out. I notice last night that I could see through the temples of my hair and freaked out. So now what? Am I going to have to have a Donald Trump comb over. Seriously I had enough hair on my head for two people. You know how people buy really bad wigs that have way too my hair on them. They are long bushy and you know they aren't real? Yeah well that's my natural hair. So when I looked last night and saw what I saw - I totally freaked. The tremors this morning did it along with the postings here. I just flushed my entire bottle. I had only taken 3 out of it. I'm over it. I like my too big nappy natural hair. I'm going to do everything I can to get it back. My dermatologist friend told me to go to Costco and buy Men's Rogaine gel form (I'm a chick). Can I just say I'm about to put my little dog in my purse and we are off to Costco. This is really, really, really the suck. So here are the choices; do you want to be sane and bald? Or do you want to be semi-crazy and shake like a junkie? I say screw it. Hey, I have cold turkied off Ambien before (it took 14 days but do not try this at home!). I'm done with Wellbutrin. No guts, no glory.

I decided to use Mirena, well...let's just say that I am considering getting it removed. I have lost tons of hair, I have been using Rogaine, biotin vitamins, and Nioxin cleanser and scalp therapy and still the hair loss continues. I always feel and look bloated, my ankles are swollen, and I am tired all the time. All these symptoms began when I got this "WONDERFUL" IUD. When I talked to my gyno. she simply brushed me off, so I went to my dermo. who I also thought was going to dismiss me. He told me that Mirena can cause hair to fall out and told me not to ignore it. I have decided to have it removed, I hope my body will go back to normal after this. Good luck everyone!

Does anyone have any thoughts on after stopping the nuvaring. I was only on it for 2 months but the extreme moods and depression made me stop and never look back. Its been 6 months since I stopped, I have not used any birth control since. My hair started falling out when I was on it, but it never stopped and is now getting worse. I am not feeling well and seem to have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, I just had a blood test today and am waiting on the results. I am 25 yrs old and otherwise healthy besides this. I feel like all my symptoms, physical and emotional started with the nuvaring, I am wondering if anyone else has developed hypothyroidism after being on and stopping the nuvaring???

Hi, I am new at this, I have been so frustrated. I too was told this was the best thing out there, and the benefits looked great so I got the IUD Mirena inserted. Cramping when I first got it for a few days then nothing for a while. Seemed ok, then one day I noticed my hair was thinning then more and more. So I made a appt with my gyno and she said basically it was in my head. I also mentioned a memory issue, kinda foggy feeling. She dismissed me and ushered me out by wave of her hand. I then go to a dermatologist to see if there was something there, maybe a sign something was definitely wrong. He noticed it was profuse and in the back of my head. He had my blood checked for vitamin deficiency and my thyroid, came back normal. Told me it looked like a pelican and had me use Rogaine and special shampoo and biotin. He also told me of an option to do a biopsy, which scared me. I waited a few weeks and decided to do it. It came back normal, no hereditary or any other abnormalities. He suggested removing IUD. I talked to him once more to see if anything else can be tested, he sent me to an endocrinologist. Did another blood test and all normal. He also did thyroid all over again. By this time, I was devastated. I felt hopeless. I was still thinking it wasn't possible. That’s when I hoped online and saw so much more others had the same problem!! I couldn’t believe my eyes! I am 32 and had this damn thing in me for a year and a half. I only wished I would of taken it out by that same doctor who told me was all in my head. It would of saved me so much aggravation. Mind you I was feeling a bit depressed and I noticed I was uptight and yelled at the kids a lot. The good news in all of this, I had it removed today and again they tried to talk me out of it. I told her, if I didn't have all these tests done, I would probably kept it in. I did my share of making sure nothing else was wrong with me. I even talked to my regular doctor and had a heart to heart; he explained everything that the others would not, including lab results. I am hoping that my hair will come back. I love my Dad, I just don't want to look like him....

Does anyone now how long the hormones stay in your body and how long till hair will stop falling out?

I have been extremely happy with my Mirena actually. I had it put in after my second child in Dec. 2004 at my 6 week appointment. The cramping and bleeding didn't last that long actually but then again I was still bleeding after having the baby anyway so it was a good time to have it done. I stopped having periods after 3 months of having it in completely. That was the absolute BEST part. I haven't had to use a sanitary pad or tampon in almost 5 years!

Now for the other aspects...in hindsight I don't know if the issues I had during the first couple years with the Mirena were side effects of the device or postpartum. That's the problem with having an IUD put in right after having a baby. Side effects like baby blues, postpartum depression (in my case I was almost postpartum psychosis), hair loss, weight issues, etc. can all be related to post-pregnancy. My biggest side effect was the hair loss. I have fine, thin hair to begin with so it's VERY noticeable when I start to lose hair. However, this happens after birth. After 2 years it was such a problem I went for a physical and requested a blood work-up. Everything came back normal. I was told it could be aging (I was 31 years old then) or stress. I tried absolutely everything from changing my diet, taking tons of biotin pills, multi-vitamins, etc. Every year I kept noticing it getting worse. I went to dermatologists who said it could be age, stress, hereditary (I have NO female pattern baldness in my family) and so forth. I started taking Women's Rogaine last fall. Still no difference and I'm losing hair still. I've even lost 25 pounds and within excellent weight range, changed positions in my company to a less stressed job (since last year) and STILL have hair loss.

My husband started doing research on the Mirena since I need to make a decision on birth control in the next 6 months. We both noticed that other symptoms were "wearing" off. I have increased sex drive (a significant amount - let's face it...14 years in a monogamous relationship doesn't all of a sudden just start to increase in the sex drive area normally), started spotting a little bit when I guess would be my period (remember I haven't had a period for 4 years now since I had the Mirena put in post 3 months) and this last month I had a REAL period for a couple days. He thought the hormones were wearing off.

I made an appointment with my GYN to discuss but thought I'd share my experience.

Again I've been super happy with the no periods aspect of the Mirena. LOVE IT! But I don't know if the other symptoms I've been having over the past 5 years are related. And now I have to make a decision. My husband wants me to switch to the Paragard Copper IUD (we love the ease of the IUD so much) yet I hate the idea of heavy periods and cramping after a decade without either. Do I take the hair loss (if it's related) but have no periods? Decisions....

I had Mirena inserted on Feb 9, 09. My period started on Feb 15, 09.....and it hasn't stopped! It is MUCH lighter than before but annoying! I am told this is normal for some women and that it can take anywhere from 3-6 months to regulate. My plan has been to wait that time period and see what happens. I have also experienced crazy mood swings around PMS time. I am definitely attributing those to Mirena. It's the first form of birth control I have had since 1998. I have always been a fairly calm person with very mild PMS symptoms. Since having Mirena inserted, my mood swings have been quite impulsive. I'm like a ticking time bomb and it really is not fair to my children. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm also experiencing the bloating, fatigue, increased hair loss, and inability to lose weight. I don't know that I can attribute the inability to lose weight completely to Mirena at this point as I am only 4 months postnatal and still breastfeeding. Also, with the hair loss, I don't think that is Mirena either. Pregnant women do not lose much hair. Since it is normal to lose x amount of hair on a daily basis, the increase for me may simply be due to hormones trying to regulate once again.

Has anyone with hair loss/lack of regrowth seen improvement after having Mirena removed? I'd love to hear from woman that have had hair loss/regrowth problems (that wasn't due to post-pregnancy). This is my biggest complaint. I've always had very thick (annoyingly so hair) and now I look like a different person. My scalp shows everywhere, my hair is thin and I don't have any regrowth to even give me hope. I don't have a history of female hair loss in my family. I've had my IUD since August and my last baby was 2 years ago. My Dr. says it's stress...but wouldn't she be stressed too if she was balding at 35! I'm looking for any confirmation that the hair growth gets better. Other side effects include, ocular migraine (I thought I was having a stroke!) vision issues and new eye floaters and anxiety. I can live with most of these, but my hair loss is killing me! Any good news out there from those with a removal?

Hi Everyone,
My experience with Mirena is still causing me distress, and I had it taken out on 9/1/08. I've been Mirena free for 5 months now, and still waiting for my hair to grow back. I do see some small, short hairs around my hairline, and I'm hoping that it's growing back, but maybe it's breakage? Any thoughts?
Here's my story: I have always had very heavy periods, so after one botched ablation two years ago, my doctor suggested Mirena. I had it placed in June, 2008. Almost exactly 3 months later, I figured out why my hair was falling out. Every time I brushed my teeth, I noticed how thin my hair had suddenly become. You could see each individual hair from the front of my hairline backward about 2 inches - each individual hair surrounded by lots of space! There was hair loss at the temples as well. I had my thyroid checked first, because my mother has a thyroid problem. My bloodwork was fine. I thought maybe my last highlight/foil might have caused it...but it was not breakage, it was an all-over thinning out. I finally realized that the only thing different was the Mirena, so I insisted it come out immediately. My doctor told me that at 45, I should expect thinning hair, which was probably the cause, not the Mirena. I told him to JUST GET IT OUT!
I really wish I had researched the matter beforehand, but am thankful that I put two-and-two together in a matter of months.
If anyone else has experienced hair loss, please post. We have to get the word out!

I've been suffering from hair loss and on my 2nd visit with the dermatologist he gave me 10 shots of that kenalog crap in my scalp. When the doctor came in the room he said I'm going to give you several shots in your scalp and I said what kind of shots and what are the side affects. His answer was there are a few side affects like headaches and etc., but no major side affects you're in good health you'll be fine. I've been having severe headaches, vomiting, losing more hair then I did before I received the injections and diarrhea. I cannot sleep at night and my whole body is severely sore. If I sit longer than 10 minutes when I get up I feel pain all over my body. I feel like an older person. I trusted this punk and I can't believe that he would violate me like this. My body has not been normal for the last 3-4 days. I don't feel like myself. After reading about the indentations, I'm hoping I don't get one on my head where he put the injections. Sheeeez! Unbelievable.

I can agree with so many of you who've shared your experiences - for about a year I felt more like 'the old me' on Wellbutrin, but in the last six months I've become progressively more fuzzy-minded. It scares me that there are times that I worry that I won't be able to finish a coherent sentence... like I'm speaking in slow motion waiting for individual words to filter through the fog of my brain so that they can be spoken. OK, it's certainly not always like this - and so far only my husband seems to have noticed, but I dread muttering the wrong thing in a business setting. Perhaps worse than this, in the vanity that is our present reality, I've seen significant hair loss from the top of my head - my squeaking clean pate is SHINY in the mirror and I hate it!!! It's winter now, but I can't wear hats all the time, and I just don't happen to work in a 'fashion forward' industry where I might hope to make hats a trend for all to follow. I will be weaning myself off of Wellbutrin and looking into oral and topical arnica b/c I'm nervous about trying Rogaine and begging stuck with that regimen for the rest of my life. The women in my family all have lovely hair; I'm 40, not 80!!

The joint pain is not bad, but I hate the thinning hair! I used to have thick hair and now you can see my scalp in spots. I'm wondering if Nioxin or Rogaine for Women will help at all or if my hair will grow back in normally after I stop the Arimidex. I also have had back pain and stomach or digestive pain I never had before. My doctors have run tests and have found nothing wrong.

I'm glad I thought to check to see if Wellbutrin might be causing my hair loss. I had some natural thinning at my temples before and started using Rogaine for women with great success. Then after my mastectomy and breaking up with a guy I went on Wellbutrin. I am currently taking the 150mg three times a day. I am losing so much hair it's scaring me. It comes off my head all day long. Like others have said I also have a handful in the hour, another handful in my comb and then it just continues to jump ship all day long. I have lost at least half of my hair.

I took Yasmin for 2 years and about 6 months after starting Yasmin I started getting migraines at least 3 x per week and sometimes 5 x per week (before not even really getting many normal headaches). I thought it might be my birth control and saw my OB who referred me to a Neurologist who put me on a medicine for migraines. About another 5 months later I noticed I had a small bald spot in my hair line. Saw a Dermatologist who diagnosed it is alopecia. I immediately stopped Yasmin and migraine meds and decided to get an IUD (GREAT CHOICE!) My migraines stopped almost immediately, however my hair loss continues to progress. I now have 3 additionally bald spots on my head and areas on my scalp that are very thin. I feel great otherwise, no headaches, no depression (other than losing my hair), no anxiety, appetite is normal. I'm so desperate to find someone else that has had this specific problem as no one believes the hair loss is connected to Yasmin. I just pray after awhile the hair will grow back. Please if anyone has experienced this same situation please post what might have helped you get through it and if it does ease up! One more thing - I have scalp pain, like burning on the front and top and back part of my scalp, wide spread, not only in the bald areas.

Well that was easy, to find out which drug was doing what. I have three new ones. Lisinopril is for HP. My head has been itching and I am using Rogaine, (sorry bald isn't where I want to go right now). Anyhow when I used it my scalp which has already been itching woke me up burning really bad. I rinsed it off but it is still itching as it has been. I'm losing my hair but would like to slow things down until I'm dead:) I'm 55. Don't sleep good but have meds for that. Zolpidem. seems to work ok. took it twice. Have low dose of Lyrika? for pain. Anyhow, real tired, need naps. Muscle aches but I had those before. Well thanks to all who posted. I'm calling the Doc, monday.

I have been taking Lisinopril for about the last maybe 8 to 10 years. It started with 20 miligrams and has now gone to 40 miligrams. Recently my pharmacy change the manufacturer of their Linsinopril. My face is extremely dry, as well as my hair has dried out so bad, that I am beginning to loose my hair. I honestly just received revelation of this on last night, as I could not figure out why I would stay so dry. I try to drink lots of water, but it seems that I am literally drying out. And to be honest my hair has had so many issues since being on this high dose of Lisinopril. Has anyone experienced dry skin or hair, resuluting in hair loss or extremely dry skin?

I haven't been able to figure out why my hair keeps falling out. I eat well and I'm not under a lot of stress, but for months now my hair falls out in clumps in the shower and when I brush my hair etc. I went to the site for women's Rogaine, and it mentioned a possible cause for hair loss is birth control pills. Coming across this Yasmine site makes me realize that the pill is probably my problem! I don't know what to do now. I have hair loss, lowered sex drive(at age 21),and like someone mentioned, I only feel really sexy when I'm on my period(and off the pill), I'm lethargic and have depression and mood swings. I almost feel like I'm locked into a terrible cycle though, since the side effects of getting off the pill sound awful too. Does anyone know if there is a way to "wean off" Yasmine??? And what is a good replacement pill w/ lower hormones/side effects????
