I am 22, and a newly wed. I have been using NR since i was 18. I have been pretty happy with it until this last couple months when i have started to have some severe side effects. I actually ended up in the ER the 29th of may. i had some weight gain at the beginning but i figured that it was normal and didn't think too much of it. When i went to the ER it was because of how much pain i was in with my lower abdomen. They said they THOUGHT it MIGHT be a ruptured cyst. I went to the doctor the next day and she said that it wasn't. Since then i have noticed that my hair has been falling out, im a very thick haired blond. (not fair!!) the pain in my uterine area has been crippling. I ended up quitting my job due to nervous break down because of the pain and the not knowing why. I have abnormal pap smears the months that i used the nuvaring. Body aches, massive head aches, depression, moodiness, heavy excruciating periods, back aches, nausea, breast tenderness, and more and more weight gain. I have gained about 50 lbs since starting NR. I used it because i am AWFUL with pills. So that leaves me with nothing other than condoms, and they hurt me. When my husband and i have sex, WHEN we have sex, it hurts before, during and after. To the tune that my husband is afraid to have sex with me, for fear of causing me pain. So what to do?

I am in my third week of using the nuvaring and after reading everyone's comments, I am relieved that I am not alone. I have absolutely no sex drive (it has hurt like a b*tch the TWO times I've felt like trying), have had headaches, cramping, am constantly yawning (but sleeping terribly), spotted for over 2 weeks, and have zits like mini-volcanoes where I've never had them before! Even using lubricant stung like the dickens. My poor husband has been doing tons of research to find out why I've been feeling this way. Apparently these lower dosage birth control pills are causing these types of issues for all ages, whether you've had children or not. Call you doctor today if you are having problems and really talk to them. If they dismiss you (ie tell you to use more lubricant like I've been told) then find another doctor. I've not been on birth control for almost 7 years but have had ovarian cyst issues, so my doc said the nuvaring would help. I would rather have the pain of a ruptured cyst than deal with this. Good luck!

Finding this web site has been a big eye opener me, I knew that what was going on with my body couldn't be normal, but didn't want to admit it. I am a 27 yr old mother of 2 that can't use BC due to liver issues. I worked in an OB/Gyn office for 5 years and never heard any horror stories about either one of the IUDs. My doctor/coworker suggested the COPPER IUD which was placed in 2000 after the birth of my 2nd son. After doing so, I dealt with 2 years of extremely heavy bleeding, cramping, migraines..... So, my doctor then decided to replace the copper with the Mirena. I had the copper taken out and the Mirena put in last March (07). 2 months after that, I was taken to the hospital with excruciating pelvic pain. To find out I had a ruptured cyst. This had NEVER happened to me before and after the surgery my health has gone down hill. I now have breakouts all over my body, nausea, swollen hands and feet, 20 lbs extra, fatigued, increased perspiration, moody, I have moments of rage, tired ALL the time, emotional, and constant pelvic pain. Not bad enough to go the dr, but enough to notice it the entire day. I have moments when all I do is sleep and others when I can't sleep at all.
The GREAT upside to the Mirena has been that I no longer get migraine headaches and I don't get periods at all. It sounds great, but the negative side effects are taking their toll on me. I have to take it out in hopes to regain myself. I don't recognize myself anymore. Physically or emotionally. Good luck to all the women that are on it or considering it. I hope that this brings insight to anyone that has questions.
I have made an appt at the end of this month to have it removed.
