I got the Mirena three weeks ago, at my 6-week check up. I have been extremely "sad",can't seem to "shake off" the basic problems normally encountered in daily life, and the scales have moved up!! I am breastfeeding and my baby is not gaining weight fast enough, even though I am nursing day and night. I am rude to my husband and my temper is short with my other children. Sex is not desirable. I guess that's why Mirena sis so effective.I have bled since insertion.
I hate this thing and after reading the other comments, plan to make an appointment to have it removed.

I have been on the NuvaRing just over a year and didn't realize it was causing a lot of problems for me. I just went to see an new GYN after watching a Doctor Phil episode on hormones, and he's going to test me for imbalances. However, he did tell me that the NuvaRing is an estrogen based birth control, so for many women, it's too much estrogen. He said NuvaRing is a good birth control and that he likes it, but some woman's bodies just don't deal well with the extra estrogen. I had made my appointment with him because after watching the episode where Robin talks about hormones, I thought I might have an estrogen imbalance. After he told me NuvaRing was estrogen based, I thought about the timing of my problems, and they all fit perfectly around the start of NuvaRing. I started on it last March, and by July I was on Lexapro for depression. I've been gaining weight, getting headaches (which I never ever got before), been incredibly moody and forgetful, and had no sex drive. If you research estrogen dominance, you'll find those exact symptoms. So for those of you who haven't tried it, it's not that it is a horrible medication. It's just that some women may already have a little higher level of estrogen to begin with, and using the NuvaRing tips the scales too much and causes these problems.

The severe headaches EVERY day. that the doctor was sure were not related to the coumadin.. are debilitating. They are usually in the evening or during the night, as I take the medication later in the day. However, I do not know how I will be able to take this med the rest of my life. I am 66 and just spent time losing weight on weight watchers program.. only to see the scales climbing daily. I appreciate the insight on this site to let me know that I am not imagining all this and not alone.

I cannot believe that all these symptoms come from the Mirena. Does any one know how this can come about? My doctor insists none of my has noting to do with the Mirena!! and my physician doctor don't state anything about it being negative!!! Since the day after I had it put it i had hip swelling and it finally went away, but then would come back. I have my Mirena put in a year ago and still had periods, and it seems like I had some symptoms and then when I had my period they would go away for awhile. The last 2 months I have not had a period and it seem like my body is all out of whack!!!! This swelling or fluid is on my hip, and goes to my groin area and with awful back pain. This is the longest I have had this. I have had an aura migraine last month, I've noticed that i get headaches, my eyes are sensitive to light, my eyes get blurry easy, i'm tired, depressed, anxious , weak. and I feel like I have vertigo all the time!!! it's really getting worse also. My conclusion is that this is an foreign object in our bodies and we are suppose to have menstrual periods and this is stopping that therefore the body is reacting to these side effects because we have stopped something that is suppose to be a natural thing. Our menstrual!!! Let me know what you think? I have been going crazy only feeling good maybe 7 hours out of a 7 day full week!!!!
I have been to the doctor about my problems and they just keep treating me for a pinch nerve and fluid in my ears!!!

I have tried to take it two different times, a year apart, and it makes me so hungry! I know it says it doesn't cause weight gain, but I have noticed a HUGE appetite difference when taking it. I gained 10 pounds in a few weeks taking it so I am off it again, for good!

My psychiatrist started me on Topamax 2 yrs ago for depression from being 75 lbs overweight. Started at 25 mg/day up to 50/day for 2 yrs. Lost 70 lbs and kept off with only minor side effects. Also took 150/day Wellbutrin during this time. (For being kind of a neat freak and washing my hands a lot.- didn't affect my social or work life much) Have slowly started gaining the weight back (+12 lbs). Seem to have built up an immune to the 50/day dosage over the 2 yrs. So he added 25 in the am in addition to the 50 I've been taking in the evening. (1 mo. ago) Having some strange reactions. My memory seems to be taking a real hit. I am a CPA (passed these exams 15 yrs ago) and now I'm studying for the Cert.'d Internal Auditor exams. I am having a great deal of trouble trying to memorize for these 12 hour long tests! I feel fatigued every day. My blurred vision (that requires reading glasses) has gone crazy. I can't read the song book at church at all. And I'm only 47!. I've had acne like bumps all around my nose and face. How could such a slight increase cause so much change? Also sometimes my heart feels like it is going to beat out of my chest. And I'm losing patience w/my 13 yr old son who's pushing my buttons to see how much he can get away with. He seems to sense that I'm not at my best. But if I go off this Topamax and gain back my 70 plds I know I will plunge into a DEEP depression. Has any one talked to their doctor about the possibility of these side effects going away after time? My tingling hands and feet did and my slight hair loss did. And my weight loss is trying to go away but I don't want that. I'm majorly concerned about the memory loss and blurred vision eventually going away. DALIAL

I have been on Topamax for a little over a year. I've had most of the side effects; tingling, numbness in the fingers, dry mouth, forgetfulness, and weight loss - love the weight loss. All the side effects have sort of slowed down as I've been on the medication longer. The weight loss has slowed and I've even began to get my appetite back- I'm afraid I'm going to start gaining weight now! I've lost about 40 pounds and I needed to lose it, so that was wonderful. I've had a very hard time losing weight all my life so this was wonderful.
I was addicted to Coca Cola and this med also helped me kick that habit because I lost my taste for the carbonation.
Does anyone know if the weight loss usually evens out after about a year or a year and a half? I need to lose about 30 more pounds and was hoping that I would continue losing weight!
Anyway, I was on the Topamax for headaches and it has completely helped that! It has truly been a God-send for me. Other than monthly hormone headaches, I don't get migraines hardly at all!
I am wondering about having my doc up my dosage for the weight loss aspect????

Ive had this damm thing inside me for a little over 18 months and since I have had it in I have gained 2 stone in weight ..... my eating habits certainly havent changed and I now exercise more to compensate for the weight gain, but nothing, the scales do not budge, initially putting it down to me getting older (40 now) but then I started having terrible stomach pains, lower back pain, headaches frequently, at least one a week. For me the worst point was my cup size going up from a C to a FF, which I am struggling to cope with now ... I hate them being so so big and so very very tender, especially my right one ... I find that even when someone brushes past me I wince. One other side effect that I hate is sex is very painful now. I have been back to my doctors with all these symptons and they have sent me for numerous tests - all back negative, I might add. It has got to the point where I thought I was actually imaging it all. I have mentioned it to 4 different doctors at my surgery saying could it be down to the Mirena, but I was dismissed by all of them with a resounding NO WAY.. and I was made to look foolish. I am having this monster removed ASAP.

hello again gypsi!
I also had alot of water retention. I was very swollen and I still had solid weight on me. I cut out all sugar and had very low carbs in my diet. I got more physically active, on the days I felt good. For me, caffeine is a great diuretic. It has helped me alot with the water retention and being swollen. I really can't explain about how fast it has been. I just happen to have had a bad experience with pred. and now that I'm off of it I seem to lose weight faster than I ever have in my whole life. After I lose the rest, and I feel this will certainly takes its good old time, I'll have to watch the sugar and carbs more. I have days when I get on the scales and see 2 or 3 lbs. come back on and then in a day two it's gone again. Weird. Don't panic gypsi. I have three sizes of clothes in my closets and sometimes none of them fit! Other times I can go to a smaller size. It's going to be a while before I feel normal again. Who know, maybe never ha ha
Today has been a better day for my blood pressure. I know this problem has come from being on pred. so long and being told to quit cold turkey. It's been three months now off of pred. U r in my prayers gypsi. I know how u feel. I promise it will get better with the weight. I've still got a year or so of pred. withdrawal. I'm tough. We'll make it.... nice talking to ya keep in touch trailblazen....................

I have been taking Effexor and Effexor XR for about 13 years. I have a chemical imbalance and that cause me to have severe depression. I had to try many other anti-depressents before I found one that worked well with my chemistry. Effexor did! At the same time I started taking Effexor I started to gain the weight. The weight gain was fast and no matter what I did I coundn't control it. In 2 years I gained 88 pounds before the scales stopped climbing. I went to the doctor and had all kinds of tests run and everything was fine. The doctor said that I was going through menopause and my metabolism has slowed down. I have always watched what I eat and have been active. I have never contributed my weight gain to Effexor until now. If there is another anti-depressant that has the same affect but without the weight gain, I would like to know about it.

I was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden after suffering from bilateral PEs in February 2004. I am on Warfarin for the rest of my life (I turn 45 in November). Since starting the Warfarin I have gained about 70 pounds. Nothing I do seem to work. I have tried eating better. I would love to exercise but my knees are shot. Probably from lugging around all this extra weight.
Has anybody else had this problem? From what I have read online, doctor will say the drug doesn't cause weight gain but come on.
Can anything be done short of stopping the medication? I am too afraid to do that. It sucks that there is not an alternative rx that would work.
I suffer from depression too (have for almost 15 years). As my weight has climbed, my meds for depression don't work as well. I am at the end of my rope & slowing losing my grip.
