I was recently taken off Dilantin and given Depakote ER. I had a terrible reaction at first. Seizure episodes, nausea, loss of memory, etc. I was told that this was a "transitional reaction". Have been on Depakote ER for two weeks and am exhausted all the time. I have bursts of energy but this dissipates quickly. Still have loss of memory and bizarre dreams.

My neurologist started me on Keppra about 10 months ago after I began having an increase in partial seizure episodes. I can honestly say that this medication worked wonders on controlling my seizures. In fact, when I feel the very light beginning aura of a partial seizure, I can take 250mg of Keppra and within 2 minutes feel the recession and retreat of what would normally be a seriously confusing episode.
Initially though, I didn't think I would be able to continue with this drug. It would completely wipe me out, and often put me right to sleep within 15 minutes of taking my 500mg dose (I'm on 500mg 2x daily). After a few months though, it doesn't affect me like it did. Now it "relaxes" me, in a nice kind of way. I probably wont be the life of the party 20-30 minutes after my dose, but within another 10-20 minutes, I would say that I would be able to keep up with just about anyone.
Effective: Absolutely!
