it's been about 2 months since my Mirena REMOVAL and I am just now starting to see a clearing up of my skin on my face and back. My skin was so bad. I had cystic acne on my back and arms and oily skin on my face and back. It's so nice to scratch my back without feeling thousands of bumps lining my neck and back.
*I feel better emotionally too. I am not getting irritated or angry as easily as i was when i had mirena in place.
*No more odor or discharge
*i'm still losing my hair but I think it's starting to slow down
*My knees don't hurt as bad as they used to.
In General I feel better and i'm getting better every week. I am sooo glad that i had it removed and that my life can continue now without such horrible side effects. It seems like it's taking a long time but that's ok as long as i'm making progress. I had it for 20 months so it will probably take a little longer to be cleaned out of my system .
Good Luck ladies.

I am 24yrs old i've had my mirena for 3 1/2 years and for the past year i have had severe acne, weight gain, mood swings, depression and fluttering feeling. recently ive been nauseated and really tired. When the acne started i went to my obgyn and she put me on tetracycline, when i reported the weight gain she sent me for blood work and a thyroid scan. when i said i think its the birth control she said noooooooooooooooooo there is no weight gain with the mirena and said i should try a diet. Mood swings she suggested i was under stress and may be i should make an appointment to talk to someone. After reading all the blogs and post this thing has to come out NOW !!!

Damn reading up on all these side effects shared here is really scaring.
Well I must admit that I certainly can relate to quite a few of them.
Well I took Yasmin for over a year, and my initial experience (say 6 months) was ok.
During that times my skin became flawless,to clear&radiant the best I'd ever had.
However beyond the 6 months things changed and I developed mad constant thrush
Really it was horrid, was put on fluconazole countless times, and I had never been one prone to thrush.
Furthermore every month during my period I'd get this mad headache coupled with dizziness and serious fatigue.
I was even convinced that I was anemic, because I'd actually go pale!Due to these headaches I decided to stop the Yasmin as I
Felt that really my life was at stake. In fact it was so bad I couldn't complete the that months pack.
Discontinuing Yasmin, opened yet another can of worms, perhaps due to me stopping suddenly.I developed severe acne,I was never one skin issues.
Well perhaps it could be attributed to the abrupt discontinuation of the pill.Sadly even 6 months of being off the pill my skin has not gotten any better.
As a result I have stupidly found myself having no choice but to go back to Yasmin.I have been taking it for just over a week,my skin has improved profoundly but I'm scared.
Moreso after reading everybody else comments,I'm really scared. If I'm to discontinue would yoi advice that I complete the cycle and not not stop suddenly?
Right now I'm ok just have slight nausea and occasional dull aching head.
Please can somebody give me advice.

This website is a joke! After I had my Mirena inserted 4 months ago I started reading on the internet about possible side effects. I was furious with myself that I hadn't Read up on this before the appointment. There were so many horrible reviews involving hair loss, weight gain, acne, and mood swings! I was so scared and actually thought about removing the Mirena that week. I then found multiple reviews on websites not owned and operated by other drug companies that are trying to scare people in order to prevent the sale and use of the Mirena and the side effects listed here were a 180 degree difference. I have not experienced any weight gain, in fact, I recently was able to shed 5 pounds from picking up running again (so it is possible to LOSE weight on the Mirena as well). I have had zero hair loss, have not had a pimple anywhere or any random hair growth. My live in boyfriend and I have discussed if we've noticed any mood swings or changes and my mood which is usually optimistic and positive has been the same since I had the Mirena inserted. My periods are much lighter and although they can last an extra day or two more than what I was used to, they are light and I have not had any cramping. I'm writing this review not because I absolutely love the Mirena, I think it's a fine form of BC but who LOVES their BC, isn't it all kind of a pain. The Mirena is by far the most convenient form of birth control and I don't worry at all about missing a day and the chance of getting pregnant. I'm writing this review because I encourage everyone to talk more with their doctors about the side effects and look around on the internet for REAL websites.

I have been on Yasmin for a month now and I have developed acne (I had severe acne two years ago but roacutane cleared this up). I also have dry lighter pigmentation marks on the tops of my arms.
Other effects are I am very ANGRY- fighting with my boyfriend and crying more than ever. Also my very high sex drive has all but gone.

I have had the Mirena for about 2 1/2 years. I had it inserted about 3 months after I had my daughter. Initially I thought it was great, but in the past 12-18 months I have noticed so many negative side effects that I believe must be related to the hormones in the Mirena. My PCP ignored my complaints but I have experienced the following since having the Mirena inserted:
sore/tender breasts, pretty serious weight gain(I diet and exercise a lot and don't lose a pound), severe acne on the chin and jaw line, coarse/dark facial hairs on the jaw line, migraines in the right side of my head, lower back pain in the left side(almost like a sciatica) fatigue. low sex drive, some mood swings, and the expected spotting. Although my PCP dismisses my concerns I have made an appt. with a new gynecologist to discuss my concerns and possible removal of the Mirena. Although the prevention of pregnancy is great the side effects are becoming unbearable and seem to increase over time. I would think twice about opting for this method of birth control.

Just want to survey everyone and ask for responses for the following 3 questions:

1. how long did you keep your Mirena and if you no longer have it, why did you have it removed?

2. how many of you had your thyroid checked? who's came back abnormal? what were the levels?

(I'm a medical student doing research on this one since I believe the levonorgestrel affects our thyroid hormone. My TSH was elevated to 5.2 which is considered "subclinical HYPOthyroidism". This was mid cycle when my natural progesterone AND synthetic progestin were cumulatively high. When I had it rechecked 6 weeks later (around my period when any natural progesterone level is gone) it was normalized at 1.5. So I think that the P+P screws up our thyroid and can throw us into a high TSH and "hypothyroid state". The opposite effect may be true during menstruation and we can become HYPERthyroid for a few days... hence the really bad anxiety?!)

3. where is everyone from? perhaps we can have support group meetings?

I've had Mirena for about 2 years now. I am just now to the point of thinking, gee, I wonder if THAT thing is causing all of this. Sure enough, I found this website and now know that I can stop all my side effects. Thank God. I have experienced depression, headaches, abdominal pain, breast tenderness and enlargement, severe acne, thick facial hair I have to pluck daily, weight gain... I even hired a personal trainer for 6 months and it barely made a dent in my weight. I was devastated, not to mention out $2,000! I've all but lost my desire to be intimate with my husband (poor thing). My little girl is just about terrified of me because I've become so easy to anger. I'm getting this thing taken out ASAP. Thank you everyone for all your posts. If it weren't for you all telling your stories, I never would have known it was the Mirena causing all this. I now have hope.

I am 21 years old and have had acne since I was 13. Not normal acne, it was like cystic and none could make it go away. I was also acting nuts when my period came around. I've tried SO many birth control pills and Yaz is the only one that has worked on my acne AND my moods. I was on Yasmin prior and the doctor said it was making me crazy so to try to sister Yaz. I know people that are on it and they hate it, but I think if you have SEVERE PMS and SEVERE acne, it will work to your advantage. The only thing I have had trouble with is awful migraines, but I got new glasses that are anti-reflectant and that seems to help tremendously. I'm taking Zoloft as well and I notice that if I take them at the same time, I get horrible nausea, so by taking them 12 hours apart, all is well!

Prescribed for sinus pressure and dizziness. Throat tightness like throat closing up, dizziness and off balance. Severe, severe acne, I am 40 years old and it has been disfiguring. I have tried to stop this medication before but have always gotten weakness and out of sorts feeling when I stop even for a day my body starts to withdrawal. This time the acne is SO bad that I am pushing through. I haven't taken it for 3 days now and am weak, fatigued and keep having blood sugar drops. Sucks, but the acne has made me all but a recluse so I have to do something. This sucks, my doc knew I was sensitive to medications, but said that this nose spray wasn't a "systemic" steroid. I beg to differ as I feel feel awful now that I've stopped. Anyone else have problems with "systemic" symptoms ??

Apparently Mirena was to be the miracle cure to my heavy periods. I must admit after an extremely painful insert of this prick of a thing it has worked as far as my heavy periods go however i am now an overweight pimply grumpy old woman. I have had a skin rash that no one can explain and have been on antibiotics for the last 6 months along with steroid creams to try and get rid of it. I have severe acne on my back, itchy bumps on my arms and legs and my hands have almost blistered with rash. I have put on about 8 klo for no real reason and i feel depressed for no reason. I am either constipated or have the runs depends on the day. I am grumpier than normal and so so so so tired all the time. I put it down to turning 40 but had a brain storm today and found this site. Thank you to all the women who have shared their stories... The answer to all my problems is just around the corner.. I am making an appointment to get this thing out of me tomorrow. I am really looking forward to enjoying turning 40... after all thats when it all begins...

Hello to All
I'm 33 yr old female who began taking Topamax 2 years ago, after diagnose with Pseudotumor Cerebri,(elevated intracranial pressure),doctors still don't know why i have PTC, it is common overweight women, certain medications, secondary to disease, which all did not connect with me as I was not overweight, have never taken any medication, other than OTC allergy or pain relievers, and all secondary diseases I was tested, and nothing, with a history of migraines headaches, that suddenly became unstable, with vision disturbance I was put on diamax, it lowers elevated intracranial pressure, finally help for this horrible headaches, , I had a side effect it elevated my glucose levels to dangerous levels, due to elevated intracranial pressure I was hospitalize, undergoing several lumbar punctures and eye surgery for decompression of my optic nerve, doctors still unsure of my diagnosis, but telling me I must have surgery for a spinal fluid shunt, I was terrified, I decided to try and consulted with another neuro ophthalmology who had a totally different opinion, I switch doctors and this is when I was prescribe TOPAMAX 25MG to start, now I'm taking 250mg daily, at first the fact that I was going to be OK, that I can continue my life without shunt, no more lumbar punctures, the fact I was not loosing my eye sight, I can go running, rock climbing, after been told I couldn't, I was convinced TOPAMAX was a miracle. I had Mirena for 1 year. Suffered from lack of libido, weight gain, bloating, depression, moodiness, extreme tiredness, anxiety, lowered immune system (seem to get every virus doing the rounds and take forever to get well), sugar cravings & occasional abdominal cramping like ovulation pain.

2 weeks after Mirena removal: mild breakthrough bleed, dry eyes, feel less bloated, loss of 2lbs but SEVERE ACNE on my chin which I didn't have before! Most people get acne while the Mirena is in, did anyone else get it after it was removed?????

My daughter had her gardasil injections in 2007 at age 16. Until then she'd had 3 years of normal regular periods. Since then her period has all but stopped, just appearing every 4 or 5 months for a day. We are now worried if this will effect her fertility.
Since the injection she has also developed vairly severe acne.
She has also had 2 episodes of passing out and seeming to have a seizure after just 2 alcoholic drinks. The doctor says none of this has anything to do with the vaccine, however I am sure that the sudden change in her periods came directly after her first shot. Qld. Australia

I had Mirena inserted in 2006, and for a year and a half it was Great, I hadn't experienced any know side effects.

Then in late 2007 I began to notice my hair thinning tremendously, I had my thyroid tested and cholesterol thinking something severe was happening, cause I'd always had thick beautiful bouncy hair.

Well low and behold I tested negative for all illnesses and began to speak out about this problem to others and heard a few people said they had their Mirenas removed because it pulled all of their hair out and they were even balding on the sides like alopecia.

I then began to google mirena side effects and ran across sites like this one and saw that I had been experiencing a ton of Mirena's God Awful Side effects, such as severe acne, hair loss, moodiness, extreme fatigue, constant irritability, and sometimes weight imbalance, depression, low back cramps when time for my cycle.

I think there should be a class action lawsuit for this drug because I have suffered tremendously with side effects that I was never warned about, I advise you NEVER GET MIRENA IT"S NOT WORTH IT I'D RATHER HAVE A TON OF KIDS THEN LOSE MY HEALTH AND BEAUTY!!!!!!!! DON'T GET MIRENA PLEASE!!!!!!

I got my Mirena IUD inserted at the end October 2008. I had a tubal ligation with the birth of my fourth child so my IUD was supposed to combat my battle with endometriosis. Needless to say, I am not pleased. After insertion I spotted for about a month. Finally that ended and I was blood free for about one month and as of January 1st, I am bleeding again. Happy New Year!!!! At first, I didn't know where to attribute my horrible depression, severe acne, and migraine headaches but now I have an idea since discovering this website. I am 31 and have NEVER suffered from acne not even during those adolescent years. The spotting is the worst. It is this horrible dark brown color with a horrific smell!!! I was starting to wonder whether or not it was actually blood. I contacted my doctor's office and was told that this was normal. I was given an antibiotic because they assumed the smell was from some type of infection. Well that didn't work. My doctor didn't want to remove it thinking that eventually my periods and bleeding will stop permanently. That day has not come yet, and I don't know how long I can endure. I really just want it out. I am tempted to contact my family practitioner and have him to remove it. I just know, I want it out!!!!!! I am just grateful for finding this site and finally realizing that it is not just me. I am looking into some herbal treatments to try to ease my discomforts with my endometriosis. I don't think I want to risk dealing with any more IUDs, birth control pills, or shots anymore. It just seems like to much to loose at this point.

I've been on Doxy now for about 6 days for severe acne and haven't had any really bad side effects. I have experienced some nausea and learned very quickly how to take it. I was wondering if anyone experienced any arm pain while sleeping and especially after waking up. I've been waking up and my elbows, lower arms and hands just ache to high heaven. This is the only thing I've changed and I don't sleep on my arms.

I am 31 yrs. old and have had 2 children. I had the mirena inserted in late August. Since then, I have had light spotting EVERY day and periods about once a week that last for a few hours. It is so annoying. I am a runner and I can't stand the inconsistency and cramping all the time. I also have had severe acne - which I have never experienced before. Until tonight, I thought it was just a mid-life crisis of acne... but now that I have read all your stories, I am convinced that I too, like all of you, am calling tomorrow to get this taken out.
Thank you all for your stories - they have helped me tremendously.

I began taking birth control pills at 16 to help control excruciating cramps that have now been diagnosed as endometriosis. Every pill I have taken has regulated my period but seems to have some other side effect. Aviane however, is most definitely the worst I have tried. I was taking Allesse, but had to switch to Aviane because of mild anxiety problems. It turns out, since taking Aviane (approx. 5 months) my anxiety has gotten worse, I suffer from nightmares, as well as extreme irritability. I become furious over the smallest things and I am typically a laid back person. I spend 3 days in bed during my period vomiting and with severe cramps, but this is due more to the endometriosis than anything. PMS starts about 2 weeks before I get my period, and I am extremely irritable for about a week after, this has not happened on any other pill. I go through periods of extreme depression, hopelessness, and am extremely tired. Also, since switching to Aviane I have battled with severe acne which I have never experienced before. I have gained a huge amount of weight. I am just waiting to see my doctor to get me off this horrible pill.

I stopped taking Yasmin over a year and half ago as i was getting thoughts of suicide and migraines, i spoke to my doctor who said that i was having an estrogen withdrawal in my 7 day break so she gave me oestrogen tablets to take in between. I don't usually take any kind of tablets, not even for headache so i thought this was stupid. So after a couple of years of taking it (oh and i forgot to say im from England were this drug hasn't been out long, i was used as a guinea pig, first to trial it at my local doctors) i stopped. Then the trouble began two weeks after stopping i got more headaches and started to itch my head on one side. The result was my hair fell out caused by alopecia, caused by body shock from coming off the pill, after that i developed Telogen Efluvium, which is another form of hair loss. I ended up loosing 50% of my hair all over. I had oily skin and severe acne.
So now i am now still recovering, i take Viviscal herbal tablets at £40 a month, to help my hair growth. But all this dosnt help the fact that i am still recovering, i do however see the light at the end of the tunnel and im just going to be patient.
I if could just get some time with the people who make this stuff and also spread the word, DON'T TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me having the Mirena removed just last Thursday was the right decision. I was not using it for birth control but as hormone therapy for heavy, crampy periods. I had it inserted in July 2008 and bled every single day for the entire time, I had it removed last week and now I am bleeding very heavily but hopefully that will stop once all those hormones are out of my body.
While on Mirena I lost all sex drive, I became severely anemic and with that fatigued terribly, and moody, crying at nothing and screaming at my kids or husband for stupid reasons, I felt bloated and gassy and didn't have those problems before.
I am 42 years old and I hate my heavy bleeding in fact I want a hysterectomy, but not sure now what I will do.

For those of you who had the Mirena removed, how long did it take to stop bleeding afterwards? This is draining every last ounce of energy for me and I am taking iron supplements.

What sucks is the cost of this, Even with insurance I ended up paying a lot out of pocket to get this thing and then all the Dr. visits due to bleeding and side affects in the 4 months it was in and now the removal of it. I am wondering if there is any way that we can get a Class action lawsuit against Bayer for this horrible thing they are trying to sell to women.
I know there are some out there who have not suffered all these horrible side effects at least not yet or that they are aware of, but I truly believe that there is nothing good about this IUD and those of us and there are a lot of us who have suffered with this should be reimbursed or compensated for the pain and loss of parts of our lives and expenses with this. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

So far i am a 14 year old boy facing prednisone and have been on this drug over 4+ month periods at 10 mg first time and 100 second time. I have chrons's disease and it is hard to treat when it has a flare, so they have to put me on prednisone. I have experienced some of the worst side effects imaginable along with many other suffering victims of this drug, and they include: Headache, Severe Acne, Flu-Like Symptoms, High Blood Pressure, 50+ Pounds Gained, Moon face, Stomach Pains, and Much More. After i have been weened completely off i have notice these: SCARY Heart Palpitations, Out of Breathe, Feels like something is beating in my stomach, and feels like my heart drops to my stomach like pacing.
