I had mine inserted 5mo ago. I have all the same symptoms (no sex drive, severe moodiness, possible depression, high irritability making it difficult to deal with my 3you). I was hypo-thyroid before, and unfortunately for me - my new GP lowered my thyroid dose at nearly the exact same time I quit my mini-pill to get the IUD. I do feel better for that day, when I take my higher dose pill, but I don't know if it'd be sustainable over time (as my doc won't prescribe me out of normal lab ranges).

The only thing I haven't gleaned from the posts attached, is were folks on versions of the pill before Mirena? I believe my mood swings/depression/(not sure of low libido) are probably my normal state. I had had pills switched on me, with drastic mood changes. My mother has drastic mood swings/depression. I had been on the piill for the last 17 years, minus my two pregnancies. My OB did tell me that Mirena wouldn't fix my "moodiness" problems, if I had them w/o the pill - but I wanted to try it and see.

Reading these posts makes me realize, this is my real problem - I need a regular dose of BC pills to feel normal, have my whole life - not my thyroid. I guess I'll stop getting so concerned that I cannot get in to see an endocrinologist for another month - hopefully my 5 min appt to get this thing out will happen next week!

Thanks to all and good luck to you!

At first I had all the symptoms you had.. and my doctor told me as well that it wasn't the mirena.. so i decided to stick it out for a few more months.. it totally sucked my first 3.. I was bleeding all the time.. horrible cramps.. breast hurt, sex drive low, hair falling out..MISERABLE.. but still i kept it in cause i knew it would benefit me in the long run. So after the first 3, i got only light spotting here and there from the 4th month to the 6th month.. Ive had it now for 10 months and I totally love it.. about 6 of my friends have it and they said they went through the same thing.. we all love it and im glad i stuck it out. My sex drive is back, acne gone, lost 25lbs, no cramps, spotting sometimes ( only for a day at most)... no more anxiety.. my hair doesn't fall out either.. If your really worried about accidentally getting pregnant then you should keep the mirena, its totally worth. My fiance and I have had sex every day for 2 months and No pregnancy.. so far so good.. well good luck with everything and if you still don't like it after a few month, then maybe the mirena wasn't right for you.. EVERYONES body reacts differently to the mirena... Good Luck all!!!

Hello ladies... Ive been reading everyones posts and have to agree on some of the side effects.. Ive had my mirena for 10 months now and haven't had any symptoms for about 4 months. My first 6 month were like all the rest of ya'lls.. headaches, cramps, non stop bleeding, acne, weight gain, even my hair was falling out... I was miserable.. but i kept telling myself that it will all go away over time. Well I was right, Now I have little or no spotting.. No cramps, my face cleared up, hair is as beautiful as ever, and i lost about 25lbs.. I had worried at first, thought maybe i was pregnant but went to the doctor and the results were negative. Mirena is doing exactly what it should and all is well. Even my sex drive is totally hugh as well.. its nuts .. I wish the best to all of you and hope maybe your mirena experience changes for the better...ciao! Gabby houston tx

I just started my 3rd pack of Aviane. One of the reasons I started taking birth control was to lighten up my period due to anemia. Well, so far its only made my periods worse. The first pack i had breakthrough bleeding for almost 2 weeks. It was heavy, the cramps were worse, felt sick, and worse depression/anxiety. I went to the doctor and he said this was "normal" and that I should continue the pill. During the second pack I bled for over a week and it was heavier, bad cramps and a headache for a week. Not to mention my "period" never came during the placebo pills but I know it can take time to regulate. I just started my 3rd pack of pill and I'm not feeling well. Just nauseous, sick and depressed again. Just last week when I was on the placebo pill I felt just fine and now i've started Aviane again and i feel horrible. All I know is that if bleed irregular/heavy this month again, i'm either going to go off this horrible stuff or go to the doctor to find a new birth control that doesn't make me feel sick and depressed all the time!

I used the NuvaRing for 2 and half years. I developed terrible burning during intercourse making it impossible and on top of that, I had no desire at all. I never knew that it was the NuvaRing doing these things to me because they did not happen right away, it took a yea maybe for me to feel the full blown affects. I had constant headaches and everything. I was diagnosed with vulvar vestibulitis and everything and all I had to do was take the ring out and I felt great. It's been 3 months since I've taken the ring out and I finally have my sex drive back, I have hardly any pain involving intercourse and I overall, generally feel happier with life! NuvaRing has scared me so bad I'm now afraid to try any type of hormonal birth control! I never again want to be the person that I was on the ring.

After reading these posts, I am glad I didn't change my mind about having the MIUD removed. I have had all sorts of problems since that evil piece of plastic was inserted. I didn't think much of it at first and thought maybe I am just tired because I have my period and cramps alllllll the time. The relationship I was in was bad and thought maybe I was tired and moody because of that. After a couple of months - boyfriend free - things didn't change. I had horrible mood swings, my concentration was shot. My work ethic went down the toliet, I felt like a 10 year old kid with ADD. No energy, back hurt on a regular basis, carpal tunnel came back with a vengence and TMJ (I don't know if that's related but I've never had it before), acne, weight gain, no sex drive, and a constant itching around my neck. I am sure the NP was ready to try to talk me out of it and wait the full 6 months for "side effects" to go away. Well, the last 5 sucked, I really didn't want to deal with this crap any longer, besides with the price of gas, I can't afford the money for the regular buying of feminine products. I am only 6 hours free of this and I am already feeling a little better. I don't have that "pressure" you feel in your belly and a have bit more energy. I am so looking forward to the next few weeks when things start to get back to normal!!! If you have any doubts about this thing....get rid of it. Its really not that bad to get it out, 99 times less painful than getting it inserted!!!

I have had my mirena for almost 6 weeks now - I am still having some bloating, indigestion, and joint pain - all of which my doctor says should not be related to Mirena. Also, moodiness and anxiety -which she said could be due to my post partum state or the fact that I am nursing - so we left it in for now. She said to give it another month or two - UGH - I don't want to give up on it - but it seems that those that have had it removed are feeling much better - please continue to post comments after removal for those of us on the fence about what to do.

I had Mirena inserted after the birth of my 2nd daughter - November 07. Things were going ok (at least that was what I thought) until about two months ago. I really did not think about the Mirena much. Maybe that was because my sex drive has been soooo gone that I have only used the benefit of the Mirena about 3 times. The problems I guess really started when my period disappeared. That happened 3 months after I got in inserted. I thought that was going to be great because my periods usually last 7 days from start to fully finished. But with this thing, I did not bleed but I definitely was still having a period. Bach aches, mood swings, headaches, bloating, etc. I started to think something was really wrong when I got a headache that lasted about a week, and I don't normally get headaches that last longer than a few hours. I could not figure out what was wrong with me. I even went to the emergency room to have them tell me that there was nothing wrong and it was probably just stress. I started to think that maybe it is the Mirena. I started doing searches on the adverse side effects of the Mirena and thank God I found you guys. I have most of the symptoms described here and other Mirena side effect pages. I will be having this awful thing removed in about two weeks. I don't know what my husband and I are going to do about birth control. We both do not want anymore kids but I am only 28 and do not want to have my tubes tied.
Headaches
Joint Pains
Low Back Pain
Mood Swings
No Sex Drive
Massive weight Gain (I have not lost any of my baby weight plus i put on a few more pounds)
Breasts Double in Size
Fatigue
Dizziness
Depression (low self-esteem)
My feet have even grown (probably because of the weight gain)

I had the Mirena put in in August of 2007. Since that time, I'm a moody, crabby, ANGRY, irritable person. I can't even stand to be around myself. I have a 14 month old son who I feel angry at for no reason. He wants to nurse and I get angry. WHY?!?! I'm not an angry person by any means. My sex drive is next to none. Since my son has been born, we have had sex 6 times. Yes, only 6. And I could care less at this point if we ever have sex again. I feel very nervous, worried...almost paranoid. I get weird, period like cramps, but haven't had a period since 2006 when I got pregnant! My back pain is horrible, and I recently started seeing a chiropractor because it was so bad. My hands get numb and I drop ink pens, spoons, etc. I'm making an appt today to have this removed!! I wish someone had told me the side effects before I got this put in. My doctor said it was safe while breastfeeding...ugh. Who knows what I'm putting into my son! This is poison.

I had Mirena removed for less than a month now and "oh boy!, it has been great!" My body doesn't ache anymore, I eat less now, more energy, sex drive, and I don't worry that my uterus will be damage with Mirena! I haven't see any change in my weight yet. But I am happier! Best luck to all and with you need an extra opinion about having mirena or not, let your doctor put in the trash for you! best place!

Ditto - I have been off for about a week now and my sex drive has returned, it was non existent on Yasmin.

I am feeling a bit odd being off it - definitely a bit bloated, emotional, acne/greasy skin and 'spaced out' but hopefully I'll get back to normal.

I was on Yasmin for 3 years, and just got off it a week ago. I tried 3 different birth control pills before Yasmin, but I cannot recommend any of them. The side effects of the first pill (three-phase pill) were more visible in a short period of time - weight gain, moodiness like crying or feeling edgy for no reason, BV, and decreased sex drive. Because it was not tolerable, after 3 months of this pill (I cannot remember the name), I switched to Min-Ovral. It was better in regards to weight and moods, but I had no sex drive. Also I had several yeast infections (following the initial episode after use of antibiotics to treat BV) after I had sex. After about 6 month of this, pill I tried Alesse but nothing changed. After 6 month of Alesse, I changed to Yasmin. The side effects include
(1) zero sex drive (affected relationship with my husband)
(2) yeast infections and bladder infections (never had either before)
(3) migraine (2-3 times a month, sometimes with nausea)
(4) anxiety (not severe)
(5) fatigue or low energy
Migraine was so bad that I was wasting my time just suffering from pain 2-3 times a month, 1-2 days each time, my husband suggested I should go off the pill. Now I've been off Yasmin for a week (2 weeks including a week between packs) and I've seen 'side effects' getting off the pill.
(1) feel like my head is going to explode - feel pressure in my head
(2) fatigue and sleepiness - can't concentrate
(3) weight gain 6 lb in a week!! while my diet or exercise did not change
(4) bloating especially on my lower stomach
I found this web site and had to post my experience, although it is still too early to tell. I think I will see a doctor if these side effects persist for a month, and will update the post here.
Thanks for reading, and I hope we will find a good solution somehow.

Hello!
I've had the Mirena since October 2007. I've had all three of my kids close together, and they were all c-sections. My OBGYN HIGHLY recommended i wait at least 2 years to get pregnant again, if we were to have anymore children. At first my experience with Mirena went OK, but its only recently i've been experiencing some of the same symptoms as other women on this site. I've been having more and more anxiety issues, my hair is coming out at a steady rate, none existent sex drive, and lately it feels as if i have morning sickness! (I know i'm not pregnant, but i wake up and i feel sick.) I'm trying to lose weight, but i seems to hit a point where i can't LOSE ANYTHING. I've been watching what i eat, taking walks, going to the gym when i can. Trust me, with my three kids, THAT IS exercise. When i have my monthly cycles, it seems as if they last FOREVER! They're not really heavy, but they seems to last for up to 2 weeks! Anyway, my moods can turn at the drop of a hat, and it seems like i'm yelling at my kids A LOT. My husband pointed it out, and i feel guilty! I have an appt. tomorrow with my doctor to get it taken out. I'm not the best with the pill, but if taking this IUD out means these side effects going away, then i'm all for it.
So i'm hoping everything will lighten up after tomorrow!!!

Hi, I just got the Mirena back in April and I have had nothing but problems from the get go. First they had trouble inserting the Mirena so instead of 5 minutes it took more like 20 minutes....by the time they got finished I started sweating really bad. I went to stand up and almost passed out. They laid me on a bed, put an ice pack behind my neck and gave me water. They checked my blood pressure and it was VERY low. 15 minutes later my blood pressure still wasn't coming back up so I was not allowed to leave. They started telling me that some people's bodies go into a form of shock and that was probably what happened and they were worried about my blood pressure not coming back up and possibly having to take me over to the emergency in order to get my blood pressure back up. Well about ten minutes later they finally get my blood pressure back up to normal so they finally let me leave their office. I get out to my vehicle and all of a sudden I feel like I am fixing to pass out again. I laid down and called a friend to come and pick me up. I kept an ice pack on the back of my neck for another 30 minutes while resting before I finally felt better again. A couple hours later came the pain. Very bad pain that lasted for the next two weeks and I am usually a person that can take pain. Finally the pain eased up after that and now I only get pain once in a while but here I am 3 months later and I am still bleeding. I feel tired all the time, I've had a lot of migraines, it is painful during sex sometimes, my sex drive has almost totally vanished and my energy level is almost at 0. I have also been experiencing stomach problems and a bloated feeling. I am EXTREMELY tired all the time. I never feel like I get a good nights sleep. I have also been experiencing hair loss but I didn't know if that was from the Mirena or not until I started reading posts on here. Now my bleeding is slowly getting worse the past few weeks. Not only am I bleeding still but now it is coming out in little clots too. Now I am getting worried so I have made an appointment to go back in. I came on here hoping I can find someone that has had the same problem so I wouldn't have to worry until the appointment. Its really disgusting and I am so sick of having this mirena in already.

Good luck to those of you that haven't already experienced these same side effects already......

I cannot disagree with these negative postings more. I absolutely love the nuvaring. I have not gained any weight...of course I diet & exercise about 5 days a week....do those of you who have experienced weight gain exercise regularly? I have also had an INCREASE in my sex drive...I have been with my fiance for 5 years, and for the past 3 of those, I have had no sex drive whatsoever. I got on the ring & bam, it's there with a vengence...the only problem with that is that we're getting married in 2 weeks & I wanted to make it special & stop having sex a couple of months before the wedding...but I just can't get enough of it. I have dealt with depression & anxiety my entire 27 years of life, so if the nuvaring is causing that...it's not any worse than normal. The only side effects I've had is the discharge, (which yes, is very annoying) and tender breasts...but I can deal with that. Although I have noticed that I cry a bit easier...but I was always a crier as well. I cry when I'm mad, sad, happy...always have, so nope...guess that's not from the ring either. ALL birth control effects everyone differently. I'm not saying this for everyone, but sometimes a lot of people like to blame certain actions & physical changes on something & maybe this is the case...for some people. I've been on the pill before & I always got off it b/c of weight gain....well, it was b/c I wasn't eating properly or exercising. I liked to blame my mood swings on the pill as well, but once I thought about it, I still had those before & after taking the pill. The only reason I quit the pill was b/c it did give me acne. Anyway, just my thoughts....& I wanted to post something positive for the ring.

I had Mirena put in in April 08, I did not have the bad cramping when inserted or any cramping after, how ever I did start bleeding 2 1/2 weeks later and it continued for almost 15 days, and then every 8 days after that I would start "spotting". Just recently the spotting has slowed, but I am bloated ALL the time I have had Looser stools I get nauseated easily IM VERY stressed and tired, and I had a great sex drive before, now I don't even thing about it and pretty well shun my husband who now sleeps in the living room. I have a blood clotting disorder where I cannot take certain forms of birth control and I was told that this was the best option now I wonder if the mini pill is better?!

I've had Mirena for about 3 months now - 6 weeks after I had my second child. My son is breastfed and right around the time I got mirena inserted, be broke out with what seems to be baby eczema. I have a few of the same side effects as many other women - hair loss, NO sex drive, fatigue - but I am wondering if anyone has seen side effects in their breastfed babies. I'm taking him off of the breast for a couple of days to see if he improves and will post again with the results.

I'm 24 years old and I've been on Aviane for about 2 years. My sex drive is GONE. I live with my boyfriend and we have a great relationship. He is my best friend. We have sex MAYBE once or twice a month and I still don't even want to do it then, but I feel bad for him so I do. I also snap at everything, and I always feel like I'm going to explode. I snap at him and my cat and my family at least once a day. I can hardly do my laundry or drive my car without feeling like I want to punch a wall. I've always been such a laid back person so I definitely think it's the birth control. I didn't gain any weight on this pill. I actually lost weight so I'm terrified to switch to anything else, but I think I'm going to have to because it's ruining my life.

I'm so glad to find this. It's taken me a while to put 2 and 2 together, but I am absolutely convinced that Yasmin is responsible for the subzero sex drive I've had for most of the past year. After reading this page, I also have an explanation for the brown discoloration on my forehead after I got a sunburn this spring -- it hasn't gone away! It's been a week and a half since I took any of the active pills, and I already feel SO much better. I was beginning to think I would never be interested in sex again! I have an appt. with my doctor this week, but there's no way I'm going back on Yasmin.

Ladies, Had my Mirena removed 2 weeks ago and i all my symptoms have disappeared. That horrible bloating feeling that would never go away has now gone and i feel so much better. I feel slimmer im more tolerant of everything and seem to be more energetic. I didn't realize what this thing was doing to me. I started bleeding 3 days after post removal it was quiet heavy and clotty (sorry i know that sounds disgusting) and stopped 5 days after. Now im going to be on in the middle of my holiday but i would much prefer that than feeling like i did with it in. Ladies if you cant stand the thing in get it out, i feel like a woman again. Also my sex drive seems to have shot up, my partner isn't complaining though and neither am i.

I have to say I am so happy to have found this web site. I started taking the nuva ring November 2007 when I got pregnant and decided to terminate the pregnancy. My Dr. suggested the nuvaring. 2 months ago I would have totally recommended this to everyone. I love it. Well how times have changed. On June 21st I went to take out the ring and it wasn't there. No where to be found. My period started a few days later so that confirmed that the ring was out. Since then, I have had the worse period. I am still on my period. I went to put in a new ring on July 1st and I felt so sick. I took it out 2 days later. Everyday is hell. I have been extremely tied, sick, nauseous, etc.

After I found this site I started putting everything together. About 3 months ago I was super depressed. I had suicidal thoughts. It was awful. My boyfriend and I fought everyday. I literally lost my mind. I have been suffering awful leg and foot cramps at least once a week. Headaches all the time. I know a lot of people lost their sex drive but I never lost mine.

I am going to the Dr. next week and I really hope that the ring I thought I lost is really lost. I refuse to go back on Nova Ring. I don't want to get blood clots and I would like to get checked just in case I might have one already. Listen...if you are thinking about taking nuvaring, don’t do it. All the people that are saying they love it just haven't experienced the negative side effects...but they will. It's poison. Thanks for reading
