Well, I just had my mirena IUD taken out last week. I had wanted to take it out pretty much since I got it in a year and a half ago. It was the second one that I had. The first I got put in when I was 17 due to a heavy period, and I could not use birth control because I suffered with depression on it. At that time I did not associate changes in myself with the IUD because they happened gradually. I lost all sexual appetite which I had believed was because I was ending a relationship at the time and I was uninterested. I began getting acne, which worsened in the colder months, so I did not associate it with the IUD. I had mood swings and was tired a lot. I associated this with stress from being a teenager and in being in school. Two and half years into having my first IUD I met my husband. My sex drive had come back, my my acne continued, and the pimple would get really inflamed and tender. My psoriasis never seemed to fully clear up either. My tiredness and moods continued, and I also became extremely emotional often. I just thought that this is who I was because I had got the IUD so young!
SO when the 5 years on the old IUD was up I thought I should get another one. With the new one my acne persisted, I lost my sex drive again and I now would be dry all the time, whether I was turned on or not. I just couldn't stop but thinking that it was the IUD. So i got in taken out finally after we got married. I didn't want to be a pregnant bride. It has been a few weeks, and my acne has pretty much cleared up, I am wet all the time, and I want to have sex. My psoriasis is also much much much better. I still feel tired sometimes, but I hope that will ease as well.
If it doesn't feel right to you, get it taken out. What is the point of being in a birth control if you don't want to have sex anyways!!! good luck everyone.

Hi
I first used the ring 3 years ago when i got married. ever since then, I've had extreme pain upon penetration. Basically, we haven't had intercourse for 3 years. My vagina burns like crazy, like sand paper every time my husband penetrates. I also haven't menstruated in 3 years. So far, doctors have not been able to treat the problem. I am going to an endocrinologist now who will prescribe hormones short term for my period. Has anyone had a similar experience? I would appreciate any feedback, advice, doctors, etc.

I an 34 and have one child, 7 years old. These are the changes I have experienced since I started the Mirena in December 2008. Each is something that wasn't the case before.

Until now, May 2009, I have gained 15 pounds. My stomach is bloated, my hair oily, no sex drive, and depressed and tired all the time. I get a lot of infections, and a yellow-brown discharge all the time. Spend a fortune in pads/pantiliners. I get joint pains on my legs and hips, and my nails have become brittle. I itch a lot like something bit me. My period is lighter.

I just got off the Depo-Provera, but not as a result of some of the horrendous side effects many of you have had. I was on it for 8 years and maintained my weight at 135. I had a good experience for the most part with it. I loved the fact that I didn't have to remember to take a pill everyday and the affordability of it, not to mention the fact that I completely stopped having periods altogether which was WONDERFUL! Anyhow, I've considered myself to have a pretty voracious sexual appetite-- until about a year ago. My libido right now is at about a 0, and it's upsetting and frustrating for both my boyfriend and I. He thinks that it's his fault, but I keep explaining that I just don't have the drive anymore.

One night on Discovery Health I caught an episode of this show called "Strictly Sex with Dr. Drew". He talked about this study that they did on an alpha male gorilla and his 3 female gorilla mates, where they injected all three of them with Depo-Provera, and then all three refused to have sex with him. The male then flew into a homicidal rage... or something along those lines. I also found out that prisons use Depo as a method of non-surgical castration for male sex offenders -- pedophiles, specifically -- to take away their urge.

I started NuvaRing yesterday, and I'm hoping that all goes well with this.

I really like the ring! I have been on it for almost three years now. At first I did have some vaginal discomfort and VERY frequent UTI/Yeast infection, but that all wore off.
One thing though it is imperative to keep your area VERY clean to avoid infection and a smelly discharge!
I have a very healthy sexual appetite, no headaches or nausea, ect. I do have "PMS" and pimples but until I read everyones comments I just assumed that was me.
when i first went on NR three years ago I didn't gain an ounce. However, I went off it all this past summer because i wasn't needing BC. When I went back on it I gradually put on 15 pounds which aren't coming off!
Other than that no complaints, I think all BC methods have their cons and ill take the convenience and the extra pounds! also I never get cramps on it!

One bad effect of Yasmin is low sex drive. It had already been scientifically proven that some pills can cause this. And sad to say Yasmin is one of them. I strongly suggest that you try Althea. It just cost around Php250. It seldom affect your moods. It also doesn't affect your weight. Although in my case, I craved for sweet stuffs more and loss appetite on other carbs. But overall, it's great. The libido wasn't affected, I'd say it even adds to your sexual appetite. It is actually very safe and reliable. Although I missed one day, I was still protected. So far it's the best pill I've encountered and it's well-commented by other people.

OMG. I guess I am lucky that this is the first site i found! I am 22 years old and i have had Mirena since may of 2007 since i delivered my youngest son. I stopped having a period (which is great) but i started having some symptoms that were completely out of the ordinary for me. I started what felt like panic attacks, it feels like tightness in my chest with pain high in my chest. I'm having heart palpitations very often, and sometimes when my heart palpitates (it feels like it stops for a second) i partially black out. i have been attributing it all to stress because i am a full time college student with 2 toddlers and a house to run but now after reading all of these comments i'm not too sure. I have a really hard time focusing, it's like my eyes slide out of focus and i just stare into the distance. I've been having sleep trouble as well... i'm always fatigued but i have a really hard time falling asleep. My mood swings have inreased tenfold. i get so angry at the littlest things and i just can't help myself. the last and most important side effect (at least in the eyes of my husband) is that i have absolutely no sexual appetite. I find myself dreading sleeping with him because i just don't feel like it anymore. I love him dearly and I really think it's not normal for an otherwise healthy 22 year old to have zero sexual interest.

I have been on Paxil off and on now for about 5 years.... the current length of treatment for the past 1 1/2 years. I need to be on it ( or something for that matter ) for my panic disorder. I am a 36 year old nurse/ manager and some days was almost debilitated by panic attacks. Depression was part of it, but not nearly as much as panic. I must say, that I have been experiencing memory loss now for about a year.... I thought maybe it was due to overwork/ stress...which I do understand it COULD be. However, I find it interesting that I am seeing so many more people with memory loss than I imagined. Is it due to stress in this type of people's lives, or is it in fact, the drug Paxil?
Keep in mind this is an SSRI ( Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor ) ~~ even though there is no solid evidence (YET!) this is a side effect of the drug, I would bet my license on the fact that that it is!
I have tried time and time again to wean myself off of Paxil.. ( with and without my Dr's advice )--- I did succeed for a few years to be without the medicine, however being on a slew of other meds in the interim did not help as much for the panic as does the Paxil. Paxil, honestly, scares the hell out of me!
Besides the "numb emotions", memory loss, sexual appetite decrease, yawning, lack of sleep, etc... the side effects of coming off of it are worse! As I read earlier, it IS addictive, indeed! The brain gets used to the drug being there ( as with any addiction ), and the "surges" of dizziness, sweats, and out-of-body-like experiences I experience coming off of the drug are excruciatingly harder to bare than the depression itself. Those above symptoms of withdrawal are just that....withdrawal!
Once your body is "allowed" to reuptake serotonin (as it is supposed to), this is when those symptoms raise their head...sometimes for weeks or months until they subside.
I would welcome anyone with help on this matter---is there another Drug out there that can help with anxiety/depression symptoms, and not cause the plethora of side effects we have all discussed here?
Diane

I had had Mirena for 2 1/2 years now. I was enjoying the freedom or not having to worry about pills or condoms, but i realized my sexual appetite was becoming nonexistent. Finally I decided to just get back into it, more for my husband's sake, and now every time we have sex I bleed. It's not dark or thicker like a period would be, but instead it is bright red, like if i were to slice my finger. I don't know what to do about this problem. Doctor's all seem to think Mirena is great, but as I sit here in pain soaking my third pad of the day, I want this thing out of me!!!

In order to counter some of the very negative postings regarding side effects of NuvaRing, I'd like to share my experience.

I had at, at one time or another, tried many different birth control options, all of which gave me terrible side effects. All variations of The Pill left me depressed, with heavy cramps and acne. The Depo-Provera shot made me gain a lot of weight and suffer through continuous spotting and cramping. The patch made me consistently nauseated.

NuvaRing has been the only method of birth control that has given absolutely no negative side effects! I have used it for over 2 years and I love it. My acne has cleared, my periods are shorter and lighter. I have not felt an ounce of depression or decreased sexual appetite, and my boyfriend doesn't feel it at all.

I post this only as a reminder that BIRTH CONTROL AFFECTS EVERYONE DIFFERENTLY. I would hate for anyone to read these postings and be frightened away from trying a medication that could be as helpful to them as it has been to me.

Many of those who experienced severe depression on this message board also mentioned having been depressed and treated for depression before using NuvaRing, which to me indicates a clear connection between having an already existing mental condition and the increased occurrence of depression with the medication.

Again, I have been using NuvaRing for over 2 years and have not experienced any of the side effects listed here. The only way to know for sure how you will benefit or not from a medication is to try it for yourself.

OK...I thought I was CRAZY, but after reading this I realized I am not alone in my experiences with the NuvaRing. I have been on it for 3 yrs, but last month after I took it out, I did not put a new one in. I had been noticing heart palpitations, tiredness, was mean as all get out, excessively thirsty, and not able to wear my contacts. When I out the ring back in this month, ALL the symptoms came back! Also, I had experienced a drop in my sexual appetite, with no ring, I was back to the 'norm'.
It will be coming out tonight and not going back in.

I had my Mirena put in about 3 weeks ago, I've had my period the entire time! No cramping and it's not too heavy, just annoying. I have also LOST 7 pounds in the last 3 weeks, I have been trying to loose weight-but I feel like the Mirena hasn't set me back from loosing the weight at all. No other side effects though! So far, I am very happy with it. I'm just really bummed about having my period for 3 weeks! My doctor said to give it 3 months to adjust and your periods will be better. Oh and I also feel like my sexual appetite has increased slightly-not enormously, but just significant enough to mention. I guess it does effect everyone differently!

I've had my Mirena for about 15 and a half months and I am having it removed today at 2 o'clock. At first I had sharp pains when I would sit down and I felt like the cords were poking me and irritating me. My OB/GYN requires patients to come back one month after having it put in so he can check it and make sure it is still in place. At this visit he also trimmed the cords although he acted like he didn't believe me when I told him that I could feel them poking me when I sat down and that it hurt. At first I didn't notice any bad side effects, but I did have one good one: my periods stopped, but I still had occasional and sporadic spotting. I didn't think to look for any bad side effects because I got the device under the impression that it had no bad side effects. I thought it only had a rare complication of perforating the uterus, but since mine was in place at the one month check, I didn't think about anymore until I started thinking about having another baby recently. I went online to see if I had to have a doctor remove the Mirena or if I could do it myself, and I found out that it's best done by a professional because bad things can happen and then you'd have to go to the doctor anyway. Plus, I didn't want to hurt my chances of having another baby. While online I discovered this whole world of message boards where women were having a lot of the same problems I'd been having in recent months and they all blamed their Mirenas. Some claimed that their problems had gone away since having it removed. I never thought to link my circumstances to the Mirena, but when I saw how many women are having the exact same problems as me I knew that I needed to go ahead and get mine out ASAP. Here is a list of my side effects, and I've found other women have had them as well with Mirena: weight gain, bloated stomach, depression, short temper with husband and daughter, acne, low sex drive, spotting, cramps, constipation, and back pain. There may be more, but I can't remember them all right now. Some of them may not even be related to the device, but I've read of so many women with Mirena who are having or have had the same issues, so I suspect a link between my problems and Mirena. I hope this helps someone out there looking for answers. God Bless!

I had been taking Loestrin 24 Fe for about four months and I have never in my life suffered from anxiety, until now. The first month was horrible, and a friend said that that was normal until my body gets used to the pill, but I noticed that it didn't go away. It just became worse to the point were I started feeling depressed. The anxiety attacks got worse and worse and I also lost my sexual appetite. I couldn't take it anymore and now I finished my last pack last week to see if the anxiety is because of the pill. I know it's the pill. Anyone else?

I have been on Zoloft (150mg) as well as Wellbutrin (300mg) for the last year. I have been on Zoloft for nearly 6 years (for postpartum depression and then ongoing depression) and the wellbutrin was added in by my doctor 2 years ago when the depression symptoms seem to be returning. However, during the last year, I am tired ALL THE TIME - really tired. The kind of tired in which I feel like I can not function. I nap any chance I get (which is difficult because I have four children) and still have no problem falling asleep at night. I have been to the doctor and have had blood tests to see if my exhaustion can be attributed to anything but my test always come back normal. So I am now wondering if my tiredness is a possible Zoloft side-effect... And is it possible for it to be a side effect that surfaced several years into using this drug? I did not feel like this when I first began either of the medications. I also wake up nightly completely soaked with night sweats... another Zoloft side effect. If anyone has any similar experience or advice, I'd love to hear!

My gynocologist had to put me on Yaz because I had had a Kenalog Injection for a slipped disk and after being injected with Kenalog I kept having menstrual periods....4 in a month a half! So she gave me Yaz, it seems to work so far, but this drug gives me side effects too. Has anyone experienced extreme tiredness? I seem to be tired non-stop even after having a lot of sleep. This wasn't listed as side effect on my prescription, but I thought this may be causing it. Since I started taking this 3 weeks ago I began to feel real depressed and angry for no reason at all. I just get these weird bouts of depression.

No where was it ever listed that Minocycline has any sexual side effects ... so i was beginning to think that my complete and utter loss of libido was just my own problem ... possibly stress related ... but when i ran out of the pills and forgot to get a refill my sexual appetite came rushing back. It was like night and day ... in only a week. I will never take this stuff again.

Well... let's see if anyone here can help us clear this mess out.

First I should mentioned that my girlfriend was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and did not get her period for over 18 months, which her MDs kept saying was normal(???!!!!) It was definitely not normal. I took her to an excellent OB/GYN and she did some tests on her and put her on loestrin fe with the 21 days of BC and 7 days of IRON tablets.

Her MD left the practice to teach... so she was left with no MD. In the meantime, About 2 years ago, my girlfriend started to experience heavy bloating, constant urinary tract infections, decreased interest in sex, soreness during sex, etc.

She went to see her MD and they kept telling her to use METRO GEL, I believe it's what it's called, and DIFLUCAN, etc. You name it, they gave it to her. She even got tested for ALL STDS and I did also to make sure I didn't have anything I would keep giving to her.

Anyway, her MD put her on YASMIN because he said it would help out with all these symptoms. Well her sexual appetite has diminished even more and now she has vaginal dryness.

The problem is that overall, this pill has done more good than it has done bad. But has anyone continued taking the pills but been treated for teh vaginal dryness?

Please get back to me.

Thanks!
