Short attention span symptoms and conditions

My eight year old son, who has asthma and has been taking Singulair since he was three, has been off Singulair for four days and is becoming a completely different little boy! He has always been a "difficult child" with intense emotional reactions to things, anxiety, oppositional behavior, a short fuse and bad temper. He has also displayed obsessive/compulsive behavior. His father and I never thought that his behaviors and symptoms were caused by Singulair. His pediatrician never suggested it. With a family history of anxiety, we just assumed it was the way he was. At four, his preschool requested he be tested for ADHD. The testing revealed a short attention span but not a diagnosis of ADHD. As he got older his symptoms grew more intense. Last year we considered taking him to a psychiatrist but decided to "wait it out" one more year to see if maturity would bring an end to some of the behaviors. It didn't and in fact they grew worse. He became aggressive, explosive and depressed.

I recently began taking Singulair for another medical condition and had noticed that it made me a little moody. Last week, on the verge of making an appointment for my son with a psychiatrist, I started to wonder if maybe he was reacting in a similar, yet more intense way to the Singulair. I reviewed the patient information on line (I had read the patient info for Singulair when my son started taking it, but had not done so in years. I learned a tough lesson: check the information that accompanies prescriptions each and every time I get a refill.) When I read what the "less common side effects" were I was convinced that my son was reacting to his medicine. Then I found this website. We stopped his Singulair immediately and within two days began seeing a dramatic change in our son. He was less high strung, defiant, and explosive. Yesterday we had a cookout with some friends and he played with other kids all day without fighting for the first time in his life! He even cooperated when we asked him to help us get ready for company.

I strongly believe that this medicine should not be given to children and teens. I am so upset that when I asked my son's pediatricians about his behavior TWICE last year, they never mentioned that Singulair could be the problem. I called today to tell them he wasn't taking it anymore and the nurse said that she would note that he is "allergic" to it in his chart!

We are exploring alternate and natural ways to treat our son's asthma. I will NEVER give him Singulair again!

FYI: the labeling for his albuterol inhaler states that "safety and efficacy have not been established in patients under 12 years old". His pediatrician has been prescribing albuterol inhalers since he was three!

Does anyone have information about herbal inhalers and naturopathic treatment of asthma? If so I would like to hear.

Hello to everyone, I just came home from a parent teacher conference for my son who is 7 yrs. old, and heard the same old thing, "he is restless, impulsive and has a short attention span". He has been taking Singulair for about 3 yrs.. Since he has started school I have had these complaints and have also been told he displays symptoms of ADHD, which ironically has been for the last 3 years. Like any parent, I question" if I am doing something wrong with my parenting, is his diet good, etc. etc.", I am also a nurse, I realize that medications are needed and beneficial in some circumstances, however I firmly believe and was taught in nursing school that medication is last resort. That being said, I have been very adament about NOT giving my son ADHD medication after doing alot of research on the different meds and their side effects. So, we started him on all natural vitamins, changed his diet some ( kids got to have candy once in a while) and started a more structured routine( the best we can since we both work) and also enrolled him in Sylvan. The teacher says there is a 50% improvement but he is still impulsive and still does not pay attention like he "COULD", again suggesting he needs ADHD meds. I came home in tears and started to do more research online to see what else can I do besides putting him on psych meds?....Then I came accross this site, I just want to cry after reading all these posts. I wonder, could this be his problem, the Singulair?.. About a year ago he use to get up in the middle of the night, 5 out of 7 complaining of nightmares, hearing things at times, headaches, decreased appetite, stomach upset, all AT TIMES, not all the time so I never thought alot about side effects of Singulair. When the school started complaining I did look at side effects of Singulair and seen HYPERACTIVITY and mentioned it to his pediatrician and she shrugged it off saying she never heard of it being a problem. She's a great MD so I listened to her because his asthma was bad when he was younger and it is now under control. But then I think maybe he is outgrowing the asthma. I am afraid to stop Singulair and him have breathing problems again but then I can't help this strong feeling in my heart that says this may have been his problem with everything else all along. We are going to stop the Singulair tonight and see what happens. If anyone else has a child with asthma any suggestions for alternative treatment would be appreciated. I'm glad I decided to look up side effects for Singulair. My 5 1/2 year old son has allegeries and was prescribed Singulair and Nasonex. Our son before taking these drugs was a smart and happy boy. Since taking these drugs for almost one year, he has shown very aggressive behavior by hitting his sibling, cousin and classmates. When asked about what he did or learned in school he couldn't remember. Favorite line, "I forgot". He started to display ADD like symptons too. Short attention span. Can't seem to be able to focus on one topic like he used to. He would cry easily and talks back. Lately, he showed a total lack of respect for even his favorite uncle. Basically, he has this attitude on and off. We, as parents, are trying to understand what is going on with his behavior and are getting quite frustrated. Time out has no effect and we are tired of yelling at him when simple reasoning doesn't work with him. My mom had mention a while ago that perhaps the drugs had something to do with it, but I didn't believe her. Now that I've read about it here I think we will need to take him off and see what happens. As to his allergy, we will just have to find something else if Singulair is the culprit. His present behavior is unacceptable and is not good for his younger sibling to see this kind of behavior. I want my happy son back. We are not the liberal kind of parents that would let the kid get away with everything. And yet, we do not run a military type of family. We use alot of common sense and fairness in raising our family, so it just boggles our mind about the behavior of our son. It's bad when other family members who we see every-so-often noticed the changes in him too.

for five years I have been a recluse due to anxiety and panic attacks. Recently I stopped taking Olanzapine as a short attention span, poor short term memory and poor concerntration were attributed to Olanzapine by a psychologist I saw for the above. An unexpected effect of withdrawal is that now, in my sith week, The panic attacks and anxiety symptoms have gone. Anyone out there had similar?

I was put on Prednisone to reduce an Orbital Tumor. I was on it for 3 months with varying doses. I was hopitalized and they had given it to me through an IV. Currently I've been off of it for 2 months. It worked, but not without lasting side effects. At first I had SEVERE night sweats, I'd wake up in the middle of the night to change my PJs, pillow & sheets. I gained about 15 lbs, I was mean & short-tempered, I had a short attention span, I lost muscle mass, I felt shakey and jittery, I used to sleep well at night and still to this day I have a hard time sleeping. My current problem is SEVERE hair loss due to this medicine. I'm going to see a Dermatologist tomorrow to see if there is any meds that can reverse this. Although I don't like these side effects, I think it helped me when ALL my doctors said I should have surgery, the Prednisone worked enough that I didn't have to. However, there is no guaruntee that it wont come back....then I'll be back on this life altering medicine.
