I have had the mirena for over a year and all of a sudden, I start to feel the side effects? I am nauseated, tired, bloated..... I FEEL PREGNANT! Taking a home pregnancy test tomorrow morning. I thought the whole idea of getting birth control was to well......BIRTH CONTROL. This is happening at a time that is impossible for me to be pregnant! Single mom with hopes and dreams of maybe living those dreams?! That is why I got on birth control and now maybe I chose a device that dosent work? Not right! I have an appt with my OB/GYN next week to check the placement and to see if I am in fact pregnant. I am 43 years old and so didn't plan on this.........

Hello Everyone,
I've been doing some research on Mirena IUD side effects, and I'm so glad to come across these testimonials. I had Mirena placed in June of 2008, which hurt badly - something my doctor didn't tell me of until the procedure. Everything was fine most of 2008 but since January 2009 I have been extremely emotional and even was put on anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medication at one point. I have gained over 15 pounds in a year and can not get below a certain weight no matter how hard I try. My weight also fluctuates, which it never has before. I'm constantly gaining/losing 5-10 lbs, on a weekly basis. I have never weighed this much in my life, besides when I was pregnant, and it is really starting to bother me.
I've attributed most of my moods and "hormones" to being a single mom of two toddlers, financial stress, relationship stress with my ex and with my mother. I eat healthy and get exercise a few times a week. I'm definitely thinking removing the IUD would help my situation and make me feel like "me" again.
My question goes to the ladies that have had the Mirena IUD and have had it removed. Have you noticed a considerable difference, and if so, how long does it take for you to notice side effects starting to dissipate?
Thanks.

I just had the Mirena removed after 2 years with it (finally connected the dots that it was causing all of my health problems). I've had it out for 6 days now, and I feel so sick. Every night, around 5 p.m., it feels like really bad morning sickness or flu (do hormones fluctuate naturally around that time?). I'm a working single mom (recently divorced...scared THAT might not have happened if I weren't so emotionally damaged by the Mirena), and I can't just take it easy and ride it out. When does the nausea stop? I've read that it's taken some people a YEAR to get over the side effects after having Mirena removed. I don't want to feel like this for a year...what can I do besides the nutritional supplements, etc? I need to function! Please help if you have any advice (or at least let me know if you felt this nausea and when it went away.) I appreciate it!

I'm 39 yrs old and I had the Mirena inserted in Sept.of 09. Since I've had this put in, I have a period every 2 weeks and it last for 2 weeks if not longer!!!!! Very annoying....... It seems like I'm always bleeding or discharging and I can't stand it anymore. I've also experienced hair loss, I have always had thick hair and now my hair is getting thin and it hasn't been growing. I'm also experiencing insomnia, my sleep has progressively declined since this was inserted. Now I'm on my second medication to try and get some sleep. I'm tired all the time, extremely moody. I get pissed off all the time over nothing. It is affecting my relationship with a man I'm totally in love with and if something doesn't change I'll end up losing him. Before the Mirena things were great and now they're getting worse and worse. I don't do things with my friends anymore cuz I'm tired all the time and moody and my boyfriend gets the grunt of it all. He has a 5 yr old and I have no patience with her and I've always been really good with kids and I never had such a lack of patience before the Mirena was put in. Needless to say I have an appointment on July 7th to get it out. Oh and did I mention the 15lbs I've gained since I've had it put in. I've never been overweight or had weight issues in my life. Since this has been put in, it seems like I keep gaining weight and it doesn't seem to stop. I go to the gym and do weights and I do a lot of cardio and nothing seems to stop the weight gain. I'm praying that after this evil thing is taken out, I can get back to being my happy self and treat the people around me the way they deserve to be treated. I know some people haven't had any problems with the Mirena, but for me its been a living hell!! No birth control is worth all these side effects. I'm thankful I found this site because I didn't know what the hell was wrong with me until I started reading all the things that other women have experienced that are similar to what I've been going through!

OMG...Seriously...People do NOT know of this site and are just beginning to put together all of these life altering side effects and look for answers. Again I am open to and have tried all sorts of new and innovative medications because I truly believe in the science.
My Daughter just turned 17. I have been a single Mom her entire life as her father is deceased. I have done it all carrying 3 or 4 jobs to pay for college tuition and the costs of raising a child. Carried a 4.0gpa for 4.5 years while raising a highly spirited red head single handedly in a college town where I knew no one. She is an amazing high honor student who is community and civic minded and is truly the most responsible person I have ever met.
I now work from home for the first time with a home daycare. I have little one's leaking or spewing on me daily just to be able to still enjoy the things my daughter now deems *gay* or ...*totally gay*.
For the first time in my life I have found a great man and truly in love but have ZERO desire to start over...this is perfect...I get to play with kids all day and send them home at night. all the fun and i get to sleep in and not worry about rising college tuition costs.
I'm 37 and about to have my life to myself for the first time...in...well...MY LIFE. My daughter will not be lingering she has plans and goals and is headed off to start her life soon after graduation next year and I have an account I have been stashing away since she was little for someday for...ME.
I would absolutely in a heartbeat rather deal with an unplanned/unexpected pregnancy than spend one more second of my life with that device inside my body.
My fever finally broke today...thought it was that *flu* i'd had back in February.
Listen to your body and do not let any Doctor try to make you continue to take a medication you don't want to take. I went through this way back when the Norplant made me gain 75lbs and bleed for 2 years while i fought with my insurance company because I had signed a contract stating I did not want children within the 5 year period for them to pay to have it put in. It requires COURT ORDERS to force you to take medication against your wishes.
when I came to this site I was still believing it was something else or I just needed to give it *more time* to adjust or whatever. No. just as some people tolerate medications and others have allergies. I believe my body was *allergic* to this device and was REPEATEDLY openly telling me to have it removed. I was lucky my *family practitioner* was booked solid the morning I finally did the math and *freaked out*. I got a doctor who turned my 15 min check into almost 2 hours of *what should we do * and *these are your options* she handed me to oxycodone and left me for 5 minutes to *prepare* for the removal, has had enough experience in last 6 months she said to know I needed some time to prepare myself for if nothing else the pain. let alone...omg...what might come next...after removal. she also told me she would only give it two *tugs* as I hyperventilated and if it didn't release she would reschedule and SEDATE me.
I'm venting and i'm sorry. It's the first time my brain has been clear enough to think since Dec 4th of 2008. I thank goodness I found this site and took some time to think about all of this and have it out first chance I got.I fear the long term effects and i'm certain my easy removal was due to it's short time and my body's good sense to try to get it OUT. I thankfully had no infections and again, removal is so NOT the *Want to kick your Doctor in the face* ordeal the insertion is.
I can't wait to see the responses from those who are nieve enough to believe that everything works the same for everyone, and I hope they hold on to my email address to keep me updated in a year or so when they too are finding themselves at a complete *loss* for their sudden lack of desire to live...or daydreaming of maiming those they once cherished.
sorry for the rambling...gotta love hormones !

I was surprised and shocked when I read all these stories about Singulair. I just purchased Singulair yesterday (no insurance--$100+) for my son who has had allergies and problems breathing. He took his first pill yesterday evening and early this morning he complained of severe stomach pains and diarrhea. I was perplexed as he didn't have anything to eat that would cause diarrhea. So I decided to type in 'Singulair diarrhea' in Google search and was surprised to find that my son is not alone. I am stopping this medication immediately. I'm just hoping the pharmacy will reimburse me because I had to save for this medication and I am a single mom of two.

OMG I am so glad I found this site!!! I have been taking YAZ for 4 months. I have been on/off several birth control pills, some with no side effects and some with. These are the worst!!! I felt like I was going crazy until I found this site. At first all I noticed was moodiness, instead of having PMS a couple days before my period I had it all month except for before and during my period. Then about 2 months into it I started feeling fuzzy headed, unable to focus, started having tingles in my arms and legs like when your foot is asleep. If I take the pill at night I have horrible night sweats and if I take it in the morning I am tired all day and have horrible dreams. The worst of it was I was having severe episodes of vertigo, the room starts spinning and I have to grab hold of stuff. It was really scary, I am a single mom and was scared that I might fall at home and my toddler would be unable to go for help. I thought maybe my iron or blood sugar was low so I went to the doctor and had a full work up on my blood - everything came back fine. The doctor wanted to send me for a CAT scan and I didn't want one as I had started wondering if it could be the pill. I am calling my gynecologist today to get it switched. Thank you so much for all your posts! Me, my family, and my job all were thinking I was going crazy or just a hypochondriac.
On a side note - I do have 3 teenage cousins who take this pill and have no side effects. However I have always been very sensitive to medication. This pill may work for some, but not for me.

I am a single mom of three kids. I had my little girl 3 yrs ago and on Nov.4th of this yr. I decided/was talked into getting the mirena inserted. It was absolutely horrible getting it in. It hurt so bad. I bled and had nasty stuff coming out of me for the first week then I just bled! it still feels uncomfortable in there and I too am waking up drenched in sweat! I didn't realize that I would continue to bleed for several months! Great birth control when you no longer want sex!!! Does it need to be removed by a nurse or can I pull it out myself? Some ppl have reported dry eyes but mine have been watering all the time and even have like a windburn/chapped feeling where the tears are. Its only been a couple weeks but its a terrible feeling!

Okay WOW! So interestingly enough, I was out w/ a friend last night and when I mentoned to him that I have Mirena-he pleaded with me to google it and find out the troubles that ppl were having. He said He almost lost his wife because of it(and by lost- I mean death) That got my attention. I told him, I thought I didn't have any problems with my Mirena... I don't even have a period ever-its great! I am truly glad he told me to look, and I am glad I read the other problems women were having. I had symptoms, that I didn't even realize I had; basically blaming it on stress or other things. I have Narcolepsy which is a sleeping disorder, and recently I was diagnosed with Fibromaylgia (s/p?) Anyways I have had my Mirena for a lil over a year; I chose it because I absolutely suck at remembering to take the "pill" everyday and I am a single mom, and I told myself I will not be in this position again with another child. (I know- a lot of "ands"...lol) Well Here is my symptoms that I didn't realize could be related. I had a nervous breakdown at Christmas last year.... I called my dad and told him he needed to go get my daughter because I didn't think she was 'safe' with me, I was balling my eyes out... I was so stressed and full of anxiety and the littlest thing would set me off-AND I knew it wasn't my babys fault, I didn't want her anywhere near me! I went to the doctor and got treated for - you guessed it manic depression/anxiety ( I have had a history of it- but NEVER this bad) She came home after a few days. However, I still get easily irritated, more easily then I should- normally I am a very patient person. I sleep all the time....ALL THE TIME, I suffer from eccessive Fatigue, and nothing I take seems to help. weight gain-yep I got that too... I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life! I weigh more now then I did when I was nine months preg. with my daughter. Bloating.... yep I got Bloating, I don't feel comfortable in any of my clothes- I absolutely hate to wear Jeans anymore, and Yes I do suffer the 'gas' problem too. I was completely embarrassed and thought I was all alone on the fear of making it to the bathroom on time... I am a grown woman of 30 (so I am still kinda young to have any problems like that!) Oh yeah...I do have the Hot flashes, people would tease me and tell me I was too young for that-DUH! I want to enjoy my daughter, she will be 4 years old in march, I want energy to do the simple things, to enjoy life again, I want to feel attractive again.... honestly right now I feel kinda hideous.... So I have two major positive I am facing... no pill to take everyday, and no period!!!! If I go have it removed; what will my cycle be like? will I bleed all the time, will it just last a long time at first and then regulate, I guess I would like to have a heads up on what to expect. then there is one more question... If I remove the Mirena and choose a different IUD; will it have the same side effects? I need a B.C. option that doesn't require me taking a pill everyday, and I already tried the depo-shot that was a bad one for me.... that was like one long, on-going period that never stopped(don't want that-lol) So if Anyone out there has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Had mine removed yesterday. had an interesting conversation with my doctor also. he said, now get this ladies, a lot of people complain about the weight gain and anxiety, etc., but it has nothing to do with the iud. i'm sitting there like, HELLOOOO?? if a lot of people complained about it, wouldn't you think that the iud DOES have something to do with it?? goes to show you that a lot of doctors are book smart, but don't have an ounce of common sense.
i just read the post about facial hair...LOL!! is that y i'm tweezing everyday?? i had whiskers all over the damn place! and lets not mention the hot flashes!
I gained 20 pounds since i got the mirena :-( now i'm 40 pounds in the hole because i started out wanting to lose 20. i'm afraid this weight will not come off and i'll be stuck with it. this is not good for an unmarried, late 30-something, single mom. i wouldn't be able to snag a guy even if i drugged him!
oh yeah, he wanted to discuss birth control options because, as he put it, I could get preg tomorrow. I'm like Yeah ok, you have to have sex to get preg. Who do you think i am? the blessed virgin mary? oh please!!
i wonder if in like 10 years or so we'll be seeing those commercials that go "If you or a loved one suffered from serious side-effects from using the Mirena...." lol

I was taking 40mg of geodon twice a day. The doctor is weaning me off.
So, he said to stop taking my evening dose. Well, I did for two nights and couldn't sleep. I was really jumpy, leg spasms, couldn't sleep, hot and cold flashes, trembling, nausea. It was like having the flu really bad. I also had a couple brain zaps. I wish I never would have started geodon. It's awful.

Hi to all,
I wanted to take a minute to say Thanks to all who post and search for answers to this drugs confusing and serious side effects. To all who have taken the time to contact the FDA and file a report to help others.Dr.Sarah Sellers is no longer the person to contact at the FDA,she has moved on after concluding her end of the investigation on Singulair. If you have a serious side effect please still take the time to file on the official FDA site for adverse event reporting. In NY. state we are still searching for legislation to help with the notification process for these serious side effects. There are to many Doctors that still do not have a clear idea of the updated side effects, and are not reporting as they should.
Letting your doctor know that good medicine is all about follow up on complaints, such as researching the singulair website to rule out that it may be the drug or it may not.Just dismissing the patient and prescribing another drug is how these drugs go undetected for so long.We want this to stop and only the unfortunate recipients of the horrors of this drug can make this happen.Again thank you for your efforts to change the system with follow through and perserverance. Our horror story is one of many and we want to help those who have survived the ravages of this drug, OUR CHILD DID NOT. Kate and Dave M.

I used the Nuvaring for 3 weeks while waiting for a tubal ligation. I am a single mom with 4 kids and was loving life until I used that ring. Two weeks after insertion, I was crying about everything and tired. I felt like I was 2 months pregnant except MUCH more emotional. The third week I was snapping at my kids and fighting with my boyfriend. 24 hours after taking it out, I felt like a new person. I will not use the Nuvaring again.

Hi again all! Well, just to refresh...had my mirena in for just over 10 months and out now for 6 weeks...This past Tuesday I started my period, on time, and it was normal, I had NO cramps (which I usually do) and I finished yesterday!!! I did have a break out of acne (which is normal), I haven't lost any weight yet (although I think at 35 it is just harder to lose, I wish it was as easy as it was to put on with this darn thing!) My moods are much better, I am not as exhausted (I am a single Mom, with a house and a job) I can actually go a whole day without a nap!!!! I guess what I want to let you all know is it seems that at some point, at our own personal rate, we will become our "normal" selves again. Now, if I could just lose these 10 lbs!!!! Keep thinking positive!!!

My baby is 3. She had strep throat from Jan to April. I'm talking off the antibotic for max 4 days and the fever would return along with swollen glands, difficulty swallowing and just plain miserable. Took me 2 ENT referrals for someone to finally agree with me that this is not normal and something needs to be done. We scheduled a T & A for April 18th. The surgeon told me that she had a severe sinus infection as well (surgery day). He recommended that we start Singulair 4mg at night along with Nasonex to possibly help with her constant sinus congestion. I gave it to her and noticed nearly an immediate a change in her disposition.(looking back now) At the time I simply chalked it up to having her tonsils out. She was on the medication until Friday May 9th. Her babysitter said that she was seeing what I was at home...only I hadn't shared my dgtrs behavior at home with her...call it guilt for being a single mom who works...I just thought she was having trouble adjusting from a week at home with mom from the surgery recovery to getting back into the "norm" routine. At home she would cry at the drop of a hat. Not just wimper or whine....but tears and screams for nearly an hour. I would ask her why she was crying and she'd simply reply "I don't know Mommy." One minute we'd be playing and she's be laughing and the next she was angry and anxious. She would complain of "tingles in her feet"...I thought she had just been sitting on her legs and her foot had fallen asleep. She would deliberately instigate her older sister...totally not her. She became fearful of her room at nighttime...and took for ever to get to sleep. A co worker had mentioned that a little boy she worked with had his medicine changed b/c the dr said one of his meds may contribute to his behavior issues. Being a nurse I asked what med...SINGULAIR. I immediately went to the web and googled singulair. I found this site...and began to read parents horror stories of their experiences. She has not had another singulair nor will any of my children - EVER. I feel guilty that I didn't take the time to research it before I put her on it. I feel blessed that I was in the right place at the right time to find out about this site. I thought that my kind and sweet little girl had turned into. I know it's only 5 days off the med but she's back to her sweet self about 75%. I am blessed that my experience was not even a month long...but losing your child to a medication that no one warns you about even for a day is WRONG. I think I would be more "forgiving" if anyone along the line of me picking up the med had said ANYTHING...but no one said a thing. My prayers are with those who were not as lucky as I was to stop this med so quickly. I hope your children return to their pre singluair selfs quickly and permanently.

Hi guys,
I came to this forum after a client at our firm told me to check out whats happening with singular. I am not a lawyer, but I am a secretary for a med mal firm and I can tell you that we have already started taking these cases. I saw a few questions posted about whether you had to wait 9 months for the investigation to finish, but that doesn't stop you from filing suit. If it were my baby boy, I would switch meds, but if you can't--make sure you journal EVERYTHING. Take videos of outbursts, etc. We have one client who's son is self mutilating after using singular. If thats happening to you, try to document the episodes. Like I said, im not a lawyer, but I work for some so I can answer a lot of questions and I would be more than willing to help. I am so disgusted by what I have read. Please email me if you have any legal questions, etc. If i can't answer them, my boss will and if its a medical question, we have a staff nurse so I will give her a call. Again, I am so sorry for what everyone is going through. I pray to god I can help in some way.

I have an 8 year daughter who has been on singular since the age of 4. I began to notice behavior changes, but contributed it to me being a single mom, and her aneixty about school. She became very germ a phobic and these behaviors became worse when she began displaying aggression towards me and her grandmother, not wanting to go to school, inability to focus and very "worried" about getting sick and dying. She is now in the 3rd grade and was diagnosed w/ aneixty disorder and ADHD and is taking two different meds for this. It does take much to get her upset and she often describes herself as a horrible person, and she "hates" her life. This was a very happy infant, and easy going child. Now it is a struggle everyday to keep everything "under control" and her stable. I wonder. Many of the stories that i have just read are so similar to mind and I know how difficult it is. I did not give my daughter her singular as she has mild allergy induced asthma and I will be consulting my Pediatrician ASAP, to find other options.

I'm 46 and been on the Mirena IUD for 5 yrs this Oct'08! It's been great for past the 1st couple of months of extreme headaches and hit-or-miss flow.
I've enjoyed 4.5 yrs. of either no period or slight bleeding each month.
I worked better than the Depo because I didn't have to go get a shot every 3 months (or whatever the procedure is) and more convenient than the Sponge!
I was able to attend Grad School, work and be a single mom w/o PMS, cramps or heavy bleeding. I very rarely used tampons---just slim maxi pads.
However, now that I'm ready to take it out sometime b4 the Oct'08 deadline I'm starting to have a lot of those annoying symptoms I experienced when I 1st got the Mirena inserted: extreme headaches, body aches, slight nausea.
I don't think I'm pregnant because my beau is "fixed" but I have to be realistic in keeping in mind that anything is possible---he may have one good sperm left and I may be in that .01% risk of pregnancy.
I plan to go to the doctor next week to find out what's happening now that my 5 yr. Mirena is about to expire.

I have been SO EXHAUSTED ever since I had my Mirena put in (almost 2 months now). I have a toddler at home and am a single mom, so sure there is already a propensity to be tired, but not like this. I find myself unable to stay awake - I lay down any chance I can, and I sleep in a fog that feels similar to when you're sick and just so "out of it" that you can't imagine being fully awake anytime soon.
Besides that, LOTS of lower back pain, gas pain, abdominal pain. Also, my periods, though much lighter, last FOREVER...10 or more days, and they come whenever they choose, there is no rhyme or reason.
Anyone else feeling extremely tired?? It was so painful to have put in, and I was so looking forward to lighter periods (mine were terribly heavy before) that I'm hesitant to take it out and just keep hoping my side effects go away. Ugh.

I was on Yasmin for a long time- maybe a year or more. That was about 3 yrs ago - I've been off it for at least a year.
Here's my question: how long will these symptoms persist after I go off the pill? I'm not sure why I have my symptoms, but maybe this pill started it. I am constantly in muscle pain, high fatigue, swollen, painful feet daily, ache/painful shoulders, back, hips, but and legs. I am not myself and haven't been in years. Maybe this drug started it.?? Your opinions based on your experience?

I am a 37 year old woman who was prescribed Avelox for acute bronchitis and sinusitus ( unconfirmed bacterial) . I ended up in the ER after taking only two doses with severe shortness of breath, pounding and fast heart beat, heaviness and tingling in my legs, feet, and hands, mental confusion, going from freezing cold to hot, tremors and more. The ER could not diagnose this and told me I was having a "Panic attack" even though I have no history whatsoever. I kept questioning if it may be an adverse reaction to the Avelox and they told me it was doubtful and that Avelox was widely prescribed and safe. After about six hours I got better but had vision problems, short-term memory loss, mood swings, depression, bizarre sucidal thoughts, joint pain, muscle pain, heart palpitations, and more for days afterward. I still have memory loss, mood swings, mild depression, and I have since had two more episodes of rapid heart beat, chest pain and shortness of breath for unknown reasons that come out of nowhere. I can't even walk up a flight of stairs or lightly exercise without major fatigue, chest tightness and pain, and shortness of breath. I have since been referred to a cardiologist after having an abnormal EKG at my primary care doctor. Last week I had an Echo Cardiogram and a heart CT scan among other tests and will find out the results on November 30th. This has been stressful and scary for my whole family. I fully blame and believe the Avelox adverse reaction is to blame. I did have a random "fluttering" in my heart for about a year prior to taking the Avelox but never experienced any trouble like fatigue, shortness of breath, or chest pain until after the Avelox. I am a single mom of a twelve year old and this has turned my life upside down. There have been at least two times that I wondered if I would ever make it home from the ER to see my precious child again. Hopefully whatever the heart trouble is will be minor and easily treated and I can get back to normal. I now warn everyone I know about the potential danger of Avelox and the Flouraquinalone class of drugs. Take care all and thanks for listening.
