Ok... thank goodness I read this. I'm sitting here thinking I'm dying... maybe I have colon cancer... I'm on 32. I've scheduled a physical to check everything out... but have been wondering if maybe Mirena would be the simple answer to what's going on with me.
I've had hair loss, but that is pretty normal for me, because I just had a baby, she is 6 months old, and I've lost hair after every one of my pregnancies (she's my 3rd). It has started to grow back, so I don't think that is from Mirena. But, I have had a very decreased interest in sex. I thought it might be because I'm still nursing my daughter, but it has never been this bad before. I'm wondering how long before my husband gets sick of me. I've also been depressed. The most disturbing though is that my bowel movements have changed dramatically. There are times when I feel like I won't make it to the bathroom, to have gas, and a small about come out. Some times there is a lot of mucus on my bowel movements, sometimes a little blood too. I kept thinking these changes correspond with the implanting of Mirena. I will be asking lots of questions about it next week at my physical, and will now call my OB too. 3 children may be enough.. the husband may need to get the snip snip.

I've never responded to a site like this, but now feel compelled to. I had my Mirena fitted 13months ago, after a friend recommended it on the strength of her excellent experience with it. I was on anti-depressants already, so haven't felt an overwhelming sense of depression, but have been thinking for the past 10 months or so, that I get way more tired, have an overall achy body often, painful joints and swollen ankles. All stuff I never experienced before. But the thing that really did it for me was the weight gain. I was only slightly over normal weight at the time of insertion but have been gaining weight steadily. Initially I thought it was just a bit over over-indulgence, but after weighing myself last week, I've made the horrifying discovery that I've gained 13kg in 13 months!!!!!!!! I've never fluctuated more than about 4 kg in my whole life, eat healthily and am normally active. Nothing has changed to what I was eating/doing before. I specifically searched the internet today to see if weight-gain is a problem. It's not listed as a major side-effect on the 'official' sites, yet I see it on many of the postings on this one.
And for those of you who are into alternative therapies, I had myself checked with a kinesiologist for dietary intolerances/allergies that could have caused this weight issue, and what came up is that the problem is progesterone. When she checked if my Mirena was a problem for me, it came up VERY positive. When checked if I should have it removed, the response was equally positive.
It's a pity, as I had none of the other problems mentioned and it's such a convenient method of bc. But in my case it's coming out, before I have to come out as a seriously obese 41 yr old!!!!!

Hello everyone. I have had my mirena in for 2 years now and have absolutely no desire for sex at all. I decided to google the Mirena side effects to see what I could find and this site came up. Let me tell you all your story sound just like mine, but the one symptom that I haven't seen is having symptoms similar to Lactose intolerance or Gluten intolerance. I did find this ****** website and it specifically states "Glucose Tolerance
Levonorgestrel may affect glucose tolerance, and the blood glucose concentration should be monitored in diabetic users of Mirena ." Now I am not a diabetic, but my family Dr. said that I had all the symptoms of being Glucose intolerant. I was tested and came out negative. Also all my symptoms increase the longer I go with out a period. I usually go 2 months without, as soon as I have it it is like my body come back to normal for a week.
Now my husband is all about permanent solutions, so I told him that I was ready for a more permanent birth control. snip snip. I am planning on having mine taken out this year. I just want my body back.
Oh this website that I have attached is the actual Official FDA information sheet that we don't get to see, but the doctor does. Make sure you read the adverse reactions. Here they are so if you don't get to the website.
Adverse Reactions
The most serious adverse reactions associated with the use of Mirena are discussed above in the Warnings section. Others are presented in the Precautions section. Other adverse events reported by 5% or more subjects include:
Abdominal pain Upper respiratory infection
Leukorrhea Nausea
Headache Nervousness
Vaginitis Dysmenorrhea
Back pain Weight increase
Breast pain Skin disorder
Acne Decreased libido
Depression Abnormal Pap smear
Hypertension Sinusitis
Other reported adverse reactions occurring in less than 3% of patients include: failed insertion, migraine, vomiting, anemia, cervicitis, dyspareunia, hair loss, eczema.

Hi Ladies,
i have had a mirena since Jan 2007. I have had continual spotting and have to wear a pad all the time. I was told it would settle down it hasnt. I have like period pain in the front and lower back, which at late, is getting worse. I think it is only natural to expect that when we place a foreign object in our bodies PLUS add the hormone that the possibility of having problems is likely. My advise,... lets make our partners step up to the plate and get the snip snip!! We were pregnant, got sick, gained weight, developed stretch marks, breast feed, gave them kids...NOW ITS THERE TURN

I have been on the Nuvaring for 5 years. I started experience anxiety, panic attacks and depression about 3 years ago. Recently they have gotten worse again. I also have very restless legs (not sure if this has anything to do with the ring) I am now 47 years old and decided that all these risks increase with age so I am getting off of it and seeing what my body will do naturally. My husband doesn't like it but all I can say is snip, snip!
