I have been using Aviane for the past two years. I used to use Yasmin but hated it since it gave me small spider veins around my legs. I honestly like Aviane a lot more. It's cheaper, I haven't gained weight, and my periods only last for maximum of 3 days. there is a very very light flow and no cramps at all. My period used to last 5 days with a very VERY heavy flow plus I used to get cramps. the only thing that bothers me about Aviane is that i feel dryer during sex and it's harder for me to have an orgasm. i definitely noticed the decreased sexual drive and my breasts always feel tender and swollen.

I have been taking Yaz for six months now, and I'm stopping after I finish this pack. I've been on it this long because I thought at first the side effects caused by it were just the beginnings of aging for me (I'm 25), but the acceleration of my problems has been so noticeable that I can't be in denial any more! Basically, here's what I have:

-thinner hair that comes out more easily and doesn't grow back as fast (it would be nice if this were restricted to "unwanted" hair, but this actually includes my eyelashes, eyebrows and head hair, which have all gotten noticeably lighter and thinner)

-CELLULITE, which I never had before...not only on my thighs but on my bum and CALVES, I didn't even realize it was possible to get cellulite there!

-spider veins on my upper thighs, again, never had this before

-very decreased sex drive

-thinner skin with less elasticity

-memory problems

-much increased vaginal discharge

Now, it's not all losses...my boobs are bigger when I actively take the pills, and my skin has become less acne prone...but is all that other stuff really worth it??? I think not.

I had my Mirena inserted in October 2006 after the birth of my second child. The insertion process was extremely painful, especially the first 30 minutes after. The cramps persisted for about three hours, they were so bad that I had to pull-over during my drive home from Kaiser and go straight to bed when arriving home. I can definately relate to a lot of the symptoms mentioned by others. I have joint pain, CRAZY mood swings, skin rashes on my neck, occasional sharp pelvic cramps, breast tenderness but most importantly bad leg cramps & pain. I don't know if another side affect caused by Mirena might be bad circulation. My family already has a history of varicose veins and bad circulation, but I've noticed that I did not have varicose veins before Mirena. Its been almost three years since I got on Mirena and my legs are constantly hurting, cramping, and tingling. This tends to happen even more after a long day of sitting at work and drive home. My thighs are now showing small patches of spider veins & varicose veins on both legs and I'm getting really worried. I began walking about two miles a day about four months ago to improve my circulation and leg pains but nothing seems to work. I don't think my weight is a factor since I'm 5'5 and weight 127 lbs, I've only gained about 5 lbs since I got on Mirena. After reading about others side effects I'm definitely contemplating on getting it removed soon & having my husband fixed. Please let me know if anyone else has had any circulatory problems.....

I wish I had never tried Yasmin. Spider veins; increased pigment on my face, leaving me with dark splotches; daily nausea, which became much worse if I got slightly off schedule. I've been off the pill for more than a year and the skin problems caused by Yasmin have not gone away. Worse yet was the low sex drive, vaginal dryness, and bad vaginal pain. I'm worried that I won't be the same as I was before.

Hello everyone,

I have been feeling certain things lately so I thought "let's see what Google thinks it is". I typed in "bloated, tired, swollen legs, increased breast size" and the first site that pops up is this website. I actually thought I might be pregnant because and was surprised to see "Yasmin Side Effects" instead of "signs of pregnancy". I have taken Yasmin for almost 7 straight years. I was off it for 1 summer and probably one other month total in that whole time. I haven't really noticed any huge changes until recently and, like I said, it hadn't even crossed my mind that the things I was feeling could be from Yasmin. First of all, my breast won't stop growing and are so, so sore. I actually just bought my first D bra tonight, after being a C since probably my Junior year of high school. My legs and specifically my calves tend to feel extremely tight and stretched lately. I thought this was from running & exercise in general, yet I've exercised intensely & frequently for 4 years and this is a recent feeling for me. I have noticed for about a year that spider veins have started appearing on my legs. I thought I was just inheriting this from my mother, who has a lot of spider/varicose veins. My sex drive has definitely decreased significantly over the years I've been on Yasmin, but again, I thought this was normal or "just me". I go through periods where I have quite an appetite and can eat bad foods yet not gain weight. Then I go through periods when I seem to have the same eating patterns as normal and I'm exercising normally as well, yet I always feel bloated and fat. Plus, I have no appetite during these times. I also go through cycles where I have horrible stomach issues (I get a "bubbly" feeling, have had really bad cramps on occasion). I thought this was a side effect of coffee but now I'm wondering...

I get my period next week and then I think I'll stop taking Yasmin to see if any of these problems subside. Does anyone know any type of birth control that doesn't cause side effects?

Good luck to everyone!

okinawak so sorry to hear about your daughter. All I can relate to you guys is my personal experience. I was on Norimin for a couple of years from the age of 19. For the last year (up until a couple of months ago) I was on Yasmin. I experienced anxiety whilst taking these pills which I attributed to stress, but since I have been off the pills I am feeling fantastic. I stopped taking Yasmin because I was experiencing other things like pains in my calves, hair loss and getting spider veins, loss of libido (I'm only 23). :-( I decided upon reading other experiences on this page to stop taking Yasmin. I am happy to report back that I am feeling great... Fantastic in fact. I won't say that its directly related to Yasmin as I have no way of proving that. All I can say is how I felt during and after. And for the last three months I have felt greater confidence in my ability to deal with what life throws at me. I am feeling happier all the time, and I think my libido is improving. All the best to you guys, and all those out there worried about symptoms, please go see your doctor!

I'm 21 and have been on Yasmin for 3 and a half months for bad acne. I was originally on Dianette but experience such severe side effects I honestly thought I'd be hospitalized, so I asked my doctor for Yasmin. All was fine for the first 2 months, but I'm now getting horrible pain in my right leg which won't go away no matter what, coupled with a pins and needles type feeling in my feet. I'm also developing spider veins on my legs, It's got to the point where I'm scared to look at my legs now in case any more have shown up! I've decided I'll come off it in a month or so, but don't know what to do to keep my acne at bay. Does anyone know of any natural remedies? I don't wanna keep messing around with drugs and hormones in case I cause long term damage!
Also, has anyone else gone to their doctor about these side effects, only to find the doctor says 'its nothing to do with the pill' when clearly it is! I saw 3 different doctors about my dianette problems, none of them believed it was down to the pill, but when I stopped taking it, my problems disappeared :/

I am 21 years old and I was on Yasmin for three in a half months (i stopped the last pack half way through). The first month i was on it, i had a lot of leg pains especially at night and sometimes to the point where i couldn't sleep. I went to the doctors and told her about this and she said it had nothing to do with the pill. My leg pain stopped after the first month i was on it and for two months i was fine. At the end of the third pack i began to get leg cramps again, but this time it was different i had little sharp pains here and there and tingling and my legs became extremely itchy. In the matter of two months i got spider veins and cellulite on my upper legs. Before the pill i had NOTHING on my legs. I searched the internet and found that birth control can cause spider veins because of the hormonal change so I thought my legs were itchy because of the spider veins so i stopped using the pill and made a doctors appointment. Three days after stopping i got my period for the second time that month. I also broke out with lumps that are red and extremely itchy. The doctor told me that the bumps are eczema and i also have a lymph node, which she said is from the eczema (which i find very strange). Two days after i broke out and got a lymph node, i got sick with a fever, extremely soar throat and a swollen neck. Today is my 7th day off the pill and im still sick. Hopefully i get better. But from being a 21 year old whos 95 pounds and having nothing wrong and starting this pill and getting spider veins, cellulite and then eczema all around the same time, i feel like im aging before my time. If anyone else has had any similar effects please let me know. Thank you.

I need help! I have been on Yasmin for the past 6 months. I never felt sick but my periods became more painful, had pains in my calf muscles, can't sleep or stay asleep, always tired, very moody, gained 20 pounds, got spider veins, etc.. It's terrible! I have about 9 pills left before the sugar pills start. I really want to stop taking it. Do I have to wait until the sugar week to get off? Or can I stop now, my moodyness is driving me crazy!

Like everyone else, I'm so glad that I found this site. I've been taking YAZ for 9 months and everything was fine/normal for the first 4 months. I didn't have any side effects, mood or weight changes. However, my arms/legs were painful when I slept at night about 5 months ago. I didn't pay too much attention but then I noticed that I started getting some celliute on my upper thighs/butt about 4 months ago. Still, I though it was just a sigh of aging and trying to put on creams etc to smooth it out....... However, after a month or two later, I started getting spider veins (just a few at first) on my upper legs/thighs and that really freak me out because I've never had anything like that before. I tried to think what was going on until I checked out this website. All these might be caused by YAZ.

In addition, taking Vitamin C supplement might worsen the situation. You can find more information under drug interaction section in the following website:-

"drugs that may increase blood levels of this drug (e.g., acetaminophen, ascorbic acid/vitamin C, atorvastatin, azole antifungals such as itraconazole/ketoconazole/vaginal miconazole). "

I don't know how this affect other people but I got more ugly spider veins since I started taking a supplement which contain Vitamin C about 3 weeks ago. I just stop taking that today and I will stop YAZ all togeter after I finish the cycle.

Please do pay more attention to your body and think twice before taking YAZ ....

hi everyone-

i feel very bad for all of you who are having such bad experiences with yasmin. i have been on it for 5 months now and have also experienced problems, though very different than what you have described here. in general i am very skeptical of sites like this since it is obvious few people are experts in medicine, endocrinology or other clinically relevant topics, but i will share my experience in the hope that others have found solutions.

to preface i will say that i have been through nearly half a dozen bcps (levlite, alessa, lessina, etc.) and have not been happy with any of them. my main complaint however has been spotting, which is only annoying. the first thing i noticed on yasmin is that my periods became much lighter, shorter (1-2 days!) and my spotting stopped completely. but within a few months i also developed pretty severe acne, increased body/facial hair, gross spider veins in my legs, fatigue, and have recently been experiencing severe cramping during or after intercourse. i'm 26, workout 5-6 days/wk, run marathons, eat very healthfully and drink 2-3 liters h20/day. i don't deserve this!

i hadn't tied these symptoms to the yasmin until i remembered i had symptoms like this the very first time i went on bcp, 9 yrs ago!! then i was on orthocyclin. the main similarities between the 2 problem pills have been the higher estrogen dosage and similar progesterone dosages. ironically, both of these pills were supposed to HELP acne, and even though i have never had it in my life it got worse!

fed up with bcps i went to my ob/gyn and she recommended mirena, the newest iud. upon reading about it i'm concerned the progestins may be what is causing my acne and hair growth, and that is what is in the iud, though in smaller doses. i really want to stop estrogen b/c the spider veins bother me most of all, but i'm afraid of upsetting my hormonal balances yet again! anyone out there with similar symptoms?

thanks,
reads too much
