my 4 year old son was recently diagnosed with pneumonia, and because he has asthma, prednisone was part of his treatment plan. after just one dose of this drug, my son turned from well behaved, loving boy, to evil demon child. he was speaking with a very scary voice and telling his mother and i he wanted to kill us as he hit, kicked, spit, and threw things at us. he tried several times to hurt his little sister and said he wanted to see us all bleed. we were distraught. the stupid doctors said that he was experiencing a very rare side effect and was hallucinating. why didn't they tell us of this side effect beforehand? anyway, he did not stop acting in this way for almost 36 hours, from just one teaspoonful. needless to say, we will never administer this devil drug to our children again.

This drug should be taken off the market. My Dr. warned me of a cough when he gave it to me but did not tell me that you would literally drown in secretions from the drainage in your throat. I have been on it 2 weeks and my quality of life has diminished considerably. During the day its as if a little man with a squirt bottle of acid is spraying my throat. At night the same thing but lying down produces uncontrollable drainage. I have to keep a spit cup by my bed and hardly get any sleep. Have tried allergy medications to no avail. I threw it in the garbage today. I would rather monitor my BP 30 times a day than live thru this.

My question is if you have been on this drug and your Dr. took you off, what did he use in its place? Would Beta Blockers be better? Who has experienced this and is now free of it? What is the alternative drug? I called my Dr.'s office today and they have Benicar waiting for me in the AM...anyone know about that one? I am desperate!

Hey I'v been on this pill for close to a year now. My period got lighter and lighter and now I don't even get one anymore. My boobs are very tender from it. The doctor did say its normal to not get a period but it still freaks me out because I'm a major worrywort. I'm not concerned about pregnancy bc I use a condom every time and take my pilla t the same time and never miss one. Has anyone been on this pill for awhile and just doesn't get their period? It scares me but everyone says its normal.

I would like to say something about advair that is POSITIVE. I have taken this drug, with NO SIDE EFFECTS for 5 years now and it has made a huge difference in my life.
I have had no isues with thrush (i rinse and spit) or weight gain or hair loss or coughs-

please don't condem a drug just based on your experience. reading through these comments I see a lot of times this has been prescribed fr folks who were not ashthmatic or with COPD. This drug is not for folks who don't have hyper reactive airways-but for those of us who do, it has been a lifesaver.

BTW I changed careers 2 years ago and entered the health field as a Respiratory therapist and adair has helped many many people. But its not a miracle drug-it has a specific purpose and if hat is not your problem, its not likely to be a good solution.

I was injected with Kenalog in Mid July 2008 to reduce the swelling in my tonsils (I had a bad case of tonsillitis). I was asked if I have allergic reactions to steroid injections, and to my knowledge, I don't. So I was given a shot in my upper right buttock on Thursday (mid July). On the following Friday I was no better (still mid July). I was still not able to swallow my own spit, let alone eat or drink, so I went back Friday morning. I got another shot in the same location of Kelanog. I was not told of side effects; I was told the swelling would go down in my tonsils/throat. Again, no results.

That Friday afternoon I was admitted into the hospital for care. A weekend of fluids and other drugs got the infection out. I stayed infection free for two weeks. It hurt for a week afterwards on my right buttock, but no bruising. I healed up, had my tonsillectomy (sp), and healed fine after that.

I noticed nothing wrong with my upper right buttock until about two weeks ago. I am in the process of getting a large rib/hip tattoo piece finished, and about two weeks ago I noticed a spot that looked like a small bruise a few inches from my tattoo in the spot where I was administered the Kenalog shots. I didn't put it together then. Two weeks later (This past Thursday, September 25, 2008), my tattoo artist was about to work on me and said, "You have a dent in your butt, what happened?" I had no idea it was even a dent. The "bruise" like mark now looked like a burn scar, red, and smooth and deep--dented.

The red mark is still dented and the same color. It's about the size of an inch from one side to the other. However, each day since it has been dented, the dented area has expanded fairly rapidly. The dent is now not only in that red area (the injection site), but also along my hip/upper thigh. It's getting deeper and traveling outside the red area, and the red area is the same color. This discoloration just started. I heard this is called Tissue Atrophy due to a misadministered Kenalog injection.

Does this dent go away or stop "spreading" by itself? How will I know if it will stop spreading; is it different for everyone? How can it be properly diagnosed as well? Can a biopsy be done to prove that this it what it is? Does anyone have any insight?

Also, it's been 2 1/2 months before I saw any of these effects...why does it seem like my effects came later than others? Is that possible?

Thanks.

Started a 5 day 750mg Leva-pak on Sunday after amoxicillin didn't touch my bacterial throat infection of unknown origin. My husband mentioned these boards full of complaints, but I was so miserable that I said I would be fine--never had a problem with a drug before.

Sunday brought swollen, painful knuckles. Monday had palpitations and painful sensitivity to light. Tuesday night I was wired and couldn't sleep at all, my heart was racing, and I had asthmatic wheezing and serious shortness of breath and borrowed my husband's inhaler. The pharmacy said insomnia wasn't a side-effect (which was misinformation) and I'd be fine as long as I didn't have a rash (more misinformation). I was finally feeling on the mend as the fever had broken Tue night and I attributed the symptoms to the infection. Then I took my next dose of levaquin.

Within 10 minutes of taking it, I was considering a trip to the ER. My head was splitting, I was extremely sensitive to the slightest motion, sound, or light, my heart was racing again, and I felt violently ill to my stomach all within 30 minutes. My throat swelled to the point I could hardly breathe or swallow my spit. My temp that had been normal since the early morning hours also shot up to 101. It was so drastic and sudden that there is no possibility the symptoms came from anything but the medicine. Short of contracting anthrax, I won't ever take this again.

AND my throat is worse! They put me on augmenting now. Wish I'd gone on it in the first place.

I began Lamictal in Jan 07. About a week after I began it I noticed excess production of phlegm. I mean crazy phlegm production to the point I needed to spit every few minutes. I also noticed that I began to have difficulty breathing at times. I had no rash.
In February I developed a fever, chills, shortness of breath, severe fatigue and severe leg cramping in both legs. I thought I was having a heart attack it was so bad. I went off the drug and the symptoms subsided however now I am severely fatigued at times and my breathing is still not quite the same as it was prior to the medication.

# 40986, what side effects do you still have? I have had similar effects and am curious to what is still lingering for you. It has been 7 months for me and I still have problems with bright lights and nausea (spit up blood) and a dent in my skin.

I've had the lump in throat from lisinopril.

NOTE: I'm sharing information I've learned about myself in the hopes that it may steer someone else in the right direction. Use your own judgement. I'm a patient and a lisinopril sufferer, but not a doctor. Always consult your doctor (ha ha ha) before trying new medications or supplements!

There are three distinct causes that you may find difficult to believe, but I have experienced all of these mysef during a prolonged recovery from this poison - ah, I mean medicine. They do not necessarily happen all at the same time during the recovery.

1) Irritation of the upper air way in the throat because of the cough and the very small quantities of highly irritating very sticky stuff coming up. Helpful: zinc, selenium, beta glucan.

2) Irritation of the esophagus due to inadvertently swallowing that really sticky stuff. If this is the problem, you can solve it by never swallowing any of that sticky stuff. If you cough or even ahem, always spit it out. Try to cough into the sink in the morning; try to spit before eating anything. If this is the cause of the lump in the throat, then you will notice dramatic improvement using the (spiting) technique in about 3 days.

3) Thyroid being overworked due to insufficient nutrition (as it gets used up by the immune system when tackling the cough). The thyroid is at the base of the neck and when it is overworked it swells, usually mildly, and may feel like a streching sensation. The most likely problem here is selenium deficiency. If you are also having some shortness of breath, this is the most likely cause. Suggest trying 100mcg of selenium per day, possibly together with a kelp/iodine trace mineral supplement.

NOTE: I have had all three of these. I wish someone had told me about zinc, selenium and beta glucan much earlier.

Zinc is very soothing to the lungs and helpful for the immune system - I'd suggest around 25mg a day.

Selenium is very good for the immune system, and well known for its use by the immune system in chemical detox. I'd suggest 100-150mcg per day. Selenium is also used by thyriod system (in the thyroid itself as well as at the receptor cites all over the body), so if the immune system runs the body low on this one, then the thyroid system suffers. Combined with already damaged lungs, this causes shortness of breath. For the thyriod, selenium works best with iodine and boron, and make sure to get enough calcium and magnesium too.

Beta glucan is a powerful immune system stimulator. I wouldn't use it until I was taking both zinc and selenium for around 2 weeks because there is no point in stimulating the immune system if it doesn't have the nutrition it needs to detox. I have discovered that taking it for 1-2 days is sufficient to be helpful, and I'm concerned about overstimulating the immune system, so I only take it intermittently. I take 200mg twice a day for 2 days, or, 200mg three times the first day, then once the second day.

Products: I like Country Life Target Mins Zinc - comes in 50mg, which is too much for long term usage, so I split into 1/4s and take one or two 1/4s a day. I like Country Life yeast-based selenium - comes in 200mcg, I split to 1/4s and take 1/4 w/ lunch and 1/2 w/ dinner. I also like Country Life Kelp Trace mineral supplement. Beta glucan, I like Solgar's 200mg tablets.

Also recommend vit-c, vit-e, multimineral, vit-b, etc... also note that for weak stomach feeling, manganese can be helpful.

I have a 9 month old baby. At the age of 2 weeks he started having a lot of stomach problems which included constipation, colics, vomiting, blooding. After several medical examination it was found he had acid reflux and allergic to regular baby formula. He was placed a special formula called Nutramigen. At the age of 5 months we have noticed him to be very hyper, won't sleep much even during the night. During the day he might sleep twice a day (app. 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.) for maybe 45 minutes at the most. He wakes up twice a night when before he was sleeping for almost over 8 hours. Like I said this happened at 5 months old. He is on Zantac twice a day. Could this medication be affecting him in this manner. He at times looks quite tired, stays still for a little while and it seems like he recharges and gets more energy. This is also taking a toll on me as I don't get too much rest and the interrupted sleep at night is affecting me. Please let me know anything that you can on this situation or who or where you can refer me to for more research. I feel something is going on with this medication.

I've been prescribed biaxin XL before and had no serious side effects. However, I was recently prescribed this antibiotic on 1000mg once a day for seven days. I've experienced diarrhea, vomitting, pain in the chest, sleeplessness. The worst side effect is the nasty taste in my mouth...and the constant vomitting to the point where I can barely swallow my own spit. Totally disgusted with this medication.

I posted May 10. Since then, I have continued taking Advair, but am now almost completely SIDE EFFECT FREE!

The trick is to remove what doesn't make it to your lungs. DON'T SWALLOW ANY! Rinse and gargle five times.:

1,2 - Gargle lightly and deeply 2x to get it off your voice box. Spit each time.
3,4 - Gargle strongly 2x to get it off the sides of your throat. Spit each time.
5 - Rinse mouth thoroughly and spit

After 1 week, heartburn and hoarseness were gone. After two weeks now, I have regained some voice control. (It may never be perfect with Advair because he bronchodilator may also be relaxing the muscles around the voice box.)

It's likely that a lot of the long-term symptoms like bruising could be from prolonged swallowing/ingestion of the stuff.

If Advair can control my asthma with no side effects, then I don't care about addiction. Have to take something daily in any case.

Please, anyone who tries the gargling, share whay you have learned!!!

Went to doctor because of burning in throat and chest and nausea. Friend had the flu and I was starting to feel the same.

Doc diagnosed fluid on ear and swollen lymph nodes. First two days os zpak diarhea set in; next day chest in severe pain; next day feeling weak and spacey; today nauseous all day - breathing bad and throat tight and headachey.

This has done nothing for the nauseousness which doc said was due to sinus drainage. Sinus got worse with white yeast material getting spit out. Yeast of course is fungus----so appears that the zpak has created yeast in the upper respiratory area rather than curing the fluid it is now congealed into white stuff.

One more pill to take. Do I take or not?

Also, told ht edoc I was allergic to erythymycin----so she prescribed zpak---------is this not the same as erythromycin?

If this is the same then I am not surprised that I am feeling bad on this medication.

Never again on z pak.

On July 5, I started a 10 day regimine of 500 mg once a day. The first day was horrible, decreased cognative skills, insomnia, twitching in left hand, tingling and numbness is the foot and lower right leg. I never thought it was the levaquin. I thought it was my inhaler or decongestant. So I continued on with my "kill pills" for another seven days. After feeling like I was on my death bed, I came across these web sights and stopped taking it after my eighth day. I am now four days and I have new symptoms. My mouth feels like cotton with a metallic taste, I feel like I am choking on my foamy clear spit, my throat seems swollen and I have a hard time swallowing. My right rib cage feels like it is cracked. I'm scared and would wish this nightmare would end. I'm afraid to go running for fear of rupturing a tendon. Any ideas on natural detox method? I really don't want to support the pharmaceutical industry in my demise.

I began taking Advair 250/50 about two months ago. After one month, I developed thrush on the back roof of my mouth and back of my throat despite gargling with alcohol-based mouthwash and brushing my teeth after taking the Advair. A prescription of Nystatin to swish and spit every eight hours took care of the thrush. I still find myself clearing my throat quite a bit with a feeling of throat congestion and am sometimes hoarse. After 90 days on the 250/50, my breathing tests improved only slightly, so the doc upped me to Advair 500/50. Three days later I experienced discomfort and mild pain in my left chest while competing in a bicycle race which I do regularly. The discomfort increased with increased effort, so to play it safe I dropped out and relaxed. This feeling has continued over the last three days but appears to be lessening. I assumed I had strained an intercostal muscle in my ribs during my breathing tests at the doc's. After reading comments on this site, I'm more concerned about side-effects. I plan to discontinue use of Advair temporarilly to see if it disappears. If it does, I will restart Advair use and see what happens, then post more to this site.

My son took Singulair for about a year from ages 5-6. It was the worst experience of our lives. He too became very moody and anxious. He started having strong separation anxiety, nightmares and sleeping problems. We assumed this was tied with starting kindergarten. Then after being on the drug for about 10 months months his dose was increased because of his growth. Immediately after increasing his dose, he began to be afraid of choking while eating his food. Within a few weeks he was refusing to eat anything other than soft food. He also became terrified of leaving me because I might die and never come back. At night he could not sleep because he was afraid the house would burn down. He refused to sleep alone at this point. After two weeks of this, he became terrified that his food was poisoned and would cry while eating. He often had to get up to spit out his food. His fear of fire increased to a fear that any electronic item might spontaneously explode. He also started having full blown panic attacks. We were beside ourselves trying to figure out what was wrong with him. At that point, we took him to a psychologist to find out what medication he'd need to take to control his anxiety. I started seaching the net and found one site mentioning anxiety in children on Singulair. We took him off the medication the next day. Our psychologist was able to get him to eat again by walking him through the grocery store and having his sample various foods from the shelves with the promise that he'd get $100 on the spot if he started choking. Of course he didn't, and was reassured that he could actually eat solid food again. Within a week, all of his anxiety was gone. After being off Singulair for two weeks, we had our son back again. The experience was absolutely terrifying, and I'm so glad our psychologist believed that it was Singular and didn't put him on an anti-anxiety drug. Since then my son has been diagnosed with borderline ADHD, but we're afraid to try any medication because ADD meds also can cause anxiety. Our psych also agrees. I'll take a squirely child over a terrified, sleep deprived and hungry one any day. If your child is experience any of these types of problems, throw out your Singulair now!!

If you're like me then the lump in the throat isn't reflux.

I discovered that the lump comes from swallowing that stuff that is coming up from the lungs.

The ACE inhibitor class of medications is well know for the side effect of a "mild" cough. This cough is dry or non-productive, meaning that the volume is low and there is no colored flem coming up. Because of this the doctors consider this to be a mild cough. However, there is a very sticky substance that the body is trying to evacuate, and if you swallow it, it will irritate your throat and stomach. Of course, it is already irritating your lungs.

To test for this you can do the following: When you wake up in the morning, clear your throat and spit out every bit you can. Do this procedure before each meal or eating something. If at any time during the day you find that you have to cough or ahem to clear your throat, do not swallow and spit instead. For me I noticed a dramatic improvement in about 4 days. Still, it's not a cure.

After about two months of following this procedure, I relaxed and stopped spitting as much. I had no problems for a while, but then suddenly, my lump was back. It seems that the body goes thru waves of trying to expel this stuff. So when it does that, I go back to the spitting procedure and that helps.

I've been off the medication for close to 7 months now. You can read my 3 month report below, user guest00222.

I've found that Vitamin C with bioflavonoids helps the twisting sensation in the stomach as one person described it. I think that this might also help those with hair issues (hair falling out, dryness).

I've found that calcium helps with shortness of breath felt low in the chest. Because of this medication, my stomach is really tender and sensitive and I've had to seek out supplements that are very gentle. I've found that calcium citrate w/ magnesium helped me quite a bit (from twin lab).

I have frequent aching and soreness in the chest and bronchial tubes, and have found that Vitamin E helps with this. At first, it made me tired, but that went away after a few days, and it helps enough that it's worth it.

I'm currently experimenting with mushrooms as they are reported to have benefits for deep breathing, which is my main on going issue. So far they are helping, but I'm having a bit of increased irritation in the stomach, so I have to find a brand that is gentler.

Note that with starting these supplements, sometimes they help the lungs be more productive for a week or so, so remember not to swallow what's coming up.

I thought my problems with these side effects would be gone by now, but some of them linger on. I'm starting to consider legal action. If the drug itself is not the problem, then maybe the generic has some vile impurity in it. This just isn't right.

And the doctors are very unhelpful. They prefer to suspect you rather than the drugs: they are advocates for the drug industry instead of for their patients.

I hope some of this help. Good luck to all, and please post any progress, especially with natural supplements.

I have been on Advair 500/50 for about 4 to 5 years. I cannot keep the weight off. I eat hardly anything at meals. I eat no sweets or bread. About 2 years ago I starting experiencing severe drowsiness even after sleeping well the night before. I was so tired. I had every test done at the dr. possible. I am on a C-pap machine and I kept bugging the sleep dr. about the pressure not being right on the machine. I had a hormone saliva test done and got my hormones on the right track. I kept waiting to feel better.I have had what I thought was irritable bowel syndrome for over a year now and been on medicine for that. It hasn`t really helped. Anyway, I read on the internet about candida and did the spit test. I had lots of yeast. I have been on a large bottle of Nystatin for the yeast now. The allergist said the Advair can cause a yeast problem in the throat and stomach. I feel much better after finishing the Nystatin, but I am sure the yeast will come back. I have to be on something as good as Advair since my asthma is so bad. I am also on Singulair and allergy shots. (For 3 years now) I still can`t handle being in the cold air. My lower calves swell up at my sock line when I am on my feet a lot. It is never ending! What do we do? Can`t live with Advair and can`t live with it!

gassy smell

lasting unexplained feeling on tongue after swallowing

the last time I took the pill: Upon putting pill on my tongue. I attempted to swallow it with lukewarm coffee. It must have immediately broken up and my mouth had a terrible taste. I spit it out, coffee and broken up pill. It left a terrible burning feeling in my throat and continued to go down further as I tried washing it down with more coffee, then water. I had a hard time swallowing for at least 12 hours. It felt as if I had a bad cold and my throat felt inflamed and swallowing was difficult. I refuse to take this medication again.

My baby has been diagnoised with spit up reflux. I give her reglan 4 times a day four hours apart. She use to be a baby that did not cry often. Now, she cries uncontrolably and shake really badly. My baby's doctor insists that she need to remain on the reglan to help prevent asperation. I don't see a difference of her spitting up but now seem to have a cranky baby. I am not sure of what I need to do.
