I've been on NR for almost 2 years. I was fine, I thought, at first. But for the last 3 months I have such severe lower back pain, I can hardly move (and it worsens after sitting for long periods of time)...and it magically lessens after I take out the NR.

Also, I have gained weight that I can't manage to shed, no matter how much I starve myself or workout. I'm heavier than I've ever been at 188 lbs, and my OBGYN when I told her how upset I was about the weight gain told me it was as easy as cutting 100 calories per day - you know one spoon of mayo or piece of cheese...like I'm sitting around spooning mayo out of a jar!

My mood swings are scary - and getting worse every month. I get mad over absolutely nothing and cry and shake with rage...to the point where I've felt like I was going insane, right now I have one "major explosion" per week. I don't want to know what my blood pressure it, I'm sure it's higher than normal, if from nothing else my mood swings. In fact reading your posts out loud to my boyfriend, I've managed to bit his head off and start crying.

I have read & re-read the side effects of NR, with no explanations of this...until I read everyone's posts here.

I'm 46 years old male. I am very active. Water Ski, Snow Ski, Weight Lifting, Hockey etc. I was on Simvastatin 40mg per day for about two months. Although I have a bit of arthritis in my knees and shoulders I couldn't believe how horrible I felt on this drug. I felt so weak and I had joint pain that was incredible. I walked around feeling like I had the flu or something. I ached every where. My knee swelled up really bad and I didn't know what to think. So I called my doctor and he said to go off it for now and I can't believe how good I feel again. The scary thing is he wants me to take a two week break then go back on it. According to him, he has read stories that statistics show if you go off this drug for a few weeks then go back on it ,that most of the time people don't experience the same side effects ever again. If anyone has been off then back on it without side effects I would like to hear from you. I really don't want to gamble with this again. It was horrible.

Started using Vivelle-Dot 0.05 in March 2008 and in June of 2008 started getting an allergic reaction which was skin redness and irritation which turn into an open wound on my stomach with pus oozing out.

In response to all the brain research theories, I just wanted to say that when my son (at age 6) was on Singulair there was a noticeable relationship between food and mood. Although his weight was not affected noticeably he would almost predictably have meltdowns if he skipped a snack or we had dinner late. And I remember that I would do almost anything, including spoon feeding him like a baby, in the morning, knowing that, after a few bites he would become 100x more manageable.

I mention this because even though one could argue that this phenomenon happens with many kids and adults it really was sharply apparent in my son - and of course his behavior was more extreme. Like the mother who mentioned a hypoglycemic-like reaction, I felt that my son's explosive behavior and intolerance at these times quickly improved after eating.

By the way, he has been off more than a year now and does not have this problem any more. Also he is much less lethargic.
