I had to re-add my original post as it was deleted.. did not realize that personal information (e-mail) should be put in the post. It has now been 3 days since I have had the Mirena taken out. I feel about a 20% increase in my energy.. My hair is no longer falling out in the areas that I would normally be able to gently touch and pull out about 30-40 hairs..and my skin already is starting to calm down even though that was not really that bothersome to me. I must say that my OB is wrong. It was the Mirena. I did not expect my hair to stop falling out so soon, but I am certainly not complaining. I will continue to monitor and advise through posting so hopefully that will give some High expectations to others who were having the same problem.
I have to say to the ones who are noting that they have not had any problems with Mirena that I too did not have any real issues for over a year. I got it in 4/30/08. Maybe 2 months later I noticed the hair and skin being oily.. was no big deal to me.. felt I could deal with that. Then I noticed fatigue and heart palpitations that I forgot to mention as a side effect (every now and then maybe 5 months later). And then around the same time I noticed my feet tingling and my hands on one occasion turning bright red with my veins bulging.. at that point I started to research Mirena.. read some posts.. but didn't think that was my problem. June of this year is when I noticed and nickel sized bald spot on the right side of my head. Because my hair is long and pretty thick I could Hide it and thought I had better get this out of me. I couldn't right away because I have a high deductible on my insurance. Well I just got it out this past Thursday because I found 2 more spots that could be considered 4 because of the pattern of balding.. so Please pay attention to your body. I do agree with my OB that it is probably not the medication.. I think my body was reacting to having the actual device in it and was recognizing it as a foreign object and was trying to fight it off..causing an autoimmune response. As I mentioned.. my hair is no longer falling out.. the only thing that changed was me taking the Mirena out. Please pay attention to your bodies because I don't think the side effects happen all at once. I am just happy that it seems that it has compromised my hormonal balance and hasn't caused any thyroid issue.. but I have a doctors appointment with my PC to get further testing done just to be sure. If any of my symptoms reappear or my hair begins to fall out again.. I will update. !!

Ok so Ive had the stupid thing since July 2008... bad cramping about 6 months in- asked the doc to take it out- she talked me out of it... prescribed me ANOTHER hormone patch to counteract the side effects of the mirena... now for the past month (I have a new doctor-a man) I have had EVERY symptom of being pregnant that you could possibly have from boobies hurting to morning sickness. And Ive had every test (btw-my strings are MIA) urine- negative- Blood- negative- ultrasound- the bastard is still there and there is a spot that is "nothing". I am having it removed Friday and I am making him put me under. It was no fun to get put in, and it even hurt when he tried to "find" the strings"... I can only imagine what it is to get it out... And if I am one in like what 10 million that got pregnant on the damn thing- its going to result in miscarriage anyways. Yea my story with tis "wonderful" POS... But I do want to know for like 8 months now Ive had spots under my boobs like where my bra runs and along my bikini line.. they look kinda like sun spots and they aren't raised u can only see them... theyre kinda brown... anybody else???

Hi everyone, I had my mirena put in feb of 2008. Around June 2008 I started having dizzy spells, and headaches. Went to ENT and ruled out inner ear problems, went to neurologist and he said it could be migraines. I never had them before but have a family history. I have in the last couple months been having really bad dizzy spells and nausea, like 4-5 times a week. Has anyone else had any of these problems? Not sure if its the mirena or not, but have been to just about every doctor and no one can figure out why i have been so dizzy and nauseous> Any suggestions?????

I had Mirena inserted 6 weeks after my son was born, the middle of March of '09. Since having the Mirena inserted my hair has quit growing, on top of that it has started following out at an alarming rate. (I've had very thick, very beautiful hair my whole life, and it's the thinnest it's been ever!) Not only that, but I have put on at least 30 lbs since March (while dieting I might add), after originally losing 100 lbs before my pregnancy. I now weigh more than I did when I was pregnant with my son. My relationship with my husband is also starting to suffer because I will be fine one minute and then the smallest little thing will set me off and I will feel myself lose control. When I feel myself lose control I try to get a grip but just can't seem to gain control. I've even noticed that I'm starting to get aggravated with my 5 month old son (whom I shouldn't get aggravated w/ @ all!!) when he starts crying. I'm normally a very clean and borderline OCD person when it comes to keeping my home clean, but here in the last few months I haven't wanted to do squat!!! Most of the time I force myself to get up and get things done, but there are days when I just can't move. I did what I thought was thorough research before I decided on using Mirena as birth control, but no where in anything I read or was given by the doctor did it say anything about these extreme side effects. I had an appointment to talk to the doctor about having it removed, but my son got sick, so I'm going first thing in the morning to get another appointment to have this stupid thing removed!!! I don't care if my husband and I have to use condoms or not, I just can't let these side effects go on any longer!!!!

Signed the Mirena petition which all of you should too. So many people who are on it with no side effects as well as doctors do not believe us and it is very frustrating. Both my OB/GYN and the neurologist I have been seeing don't think the Mirena is responsible for my dizziness/foggy head, anger/anxiety/moodiness, body tingling, however my symptoms started exactly 3 weeks after I got Mirena inserted. Never had these issues before. Have had the Mirena removed and hope these horrible symptoms go away!

I had my mirena put in March 2009 after an unexpected pregnancy that ended in miscarriage. My insurance was about to run out and i figured mirena would be my best option, otherwise i would have to pay an arm and a leg for any other birth control. Ever since i had the stupid thing put in, i have had NO sex drive WHAT-SO-EVER!!!! my back started breaking out a few weeks after.... i have never had backne in my life.... my doctor told me it would lighten up my heavy periods or take them away completely... but i have had nothing BUT a period since the thing was put in and they are heavier and clottier than i have ever had before. i don't know about any of you other ladies who have the mirena, but soon after i had it put in, i started developing PAINFUL cysts on my ovaries with my period. I have no energy ever, im always dizzy, my period cramps are so bad and i am so moody that my boyfriend cant stand me sometimes. I plan to have the darn thing removed as soon as i can save up enough money to see my doctor.. any ladies who are thinking about having mirena put in... don't! stay as far away from it as you can and don't let your doctor talk you into it. i have read all the horror stories on this website and i think the mirena causes more harm than good

Holy Moly...Basically I think all birth control methods suck, especially hormone based ones. Women always bear the brunt of the hideous side effects.
Used rhythm method for years, no problem. Conceived 2 kids when I wanted to. Afterwards, I thought Mirena would be good idea. AWFUL! Stupid thing poked him and me. OUT! Started Nuvaring 2.5 months ago. Sound familiar: Great for first month...I thought. Didn't fall out which was the big thing I had heard about. Now, noticing 1) weight gain despite running, tennis, etc. and following weight watchers. 2) Thin, brittle hair. 3) knee and joint pain which makes exercise hard (thought it was my sneakers) in addition to upper-thigh soreness. 4) IBS symptoms for first time in 38 years! Bloating, diarrhea, gas, etc. 5) trouble staying asleep despite fatigue 6) new level of fatigue 7) vaginal dryness which never had EVER before hormones! 8) increasing disinterest in sex.
So, yup, took it out yesterday after finding this site. NO more hormones for me! Abstinence or condoms, I guess. Geesh.

I got the Mirena inserted in Aug of 2008. what a horrible experience,it hurt so bad i almost passed out from the pain . at first I thought it was a great thing to have and who wouldn't when they tell you, you might not have a period. I'm 33yrs old and was on Depro-Provera before and loved it.
Since I've had this put in I have lost my sex-drive, gained 25lb, have horrible cramps, spot here and there never knowing when I might start bleeding. Then to add to it in the past month I have been having dizzy spells.
I have set it up to have this thing removed on May 12th. The biggest kicker of it all is that after talking with my uncle who is a gyno out of state, he told me the Mirena never should have been put in since I have never had children and have had a LEEP before. Needless to say I'm counting down the days until i get this stupid thing out.

First of all, a big thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences. I am a biochemist, with a background in pharmaceutical research...I chose the Mirena IUD after careful consideration of it's active ingredient, Levonorgestrel. The side effect profile seemed pretty acceptable...until I started to experience nearly ALL of them...I am 33 years old and had the Mirena IUD placed in October of 2008 after the birth of my second child in June of 2008. The initial reaction was to be expected...cramping, a little spotting etc...nothing to be alarmed about. I still have yet to have a period (which I really don't miss so no problem there) I never gave a second thought to this until now...for the past month or so (coinciding with the weening process, since I have been nursing the entire time, I believe the side effects were not as noticeable) I have been experiencing the following (that may or may not be related to Mirena as my OBGYN has so adamantly pointed out, but after reviewing your posts I'm willing to bet they're connected) and are in order of occurrence: Major, but temporary, hair loss after 2 months or so; Major respiratory infection lingering over a month with difficulty breathing, tightness and pain in the chest at around 6 mos; And in the past month, several instances of motion-like sickness/ nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, major impatience/ mood swings, loss of appetite (pregnancy-like symptoms...yep, I was thinking man I'd be pretty pissed if I was that 0.01% pregnant statistic), and as of this past weekend, my first aurora migraine with tunnel vision and serious nausea and vomiting, to the point where I went to Urgent Care...who referred me to the ER...who wants to perform a battery of tests including a head CT. I have an appointment with a trusted GP tomorrow to discuss possible root causes...but it is to coincidental that so many women are experiencing these same symptoms! I am certainly leaning towards having this removed. CAN THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE HAD THIS REMOVED PLEASE RESPOND IF YOUR SYMPTOMS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED OR WERE RESOLVED!!! THANK YOU!
These side effects seem to go well beyond a 5% rate of incidence according to all of you who have reported. I will investigate further and keep everyone posted. As someone who is highly experienced in the pharmaceutical industry, you bet your a$$ I'm going to get to the bottom of this! Good luck ladies!

I have had the Mirena since October, 07, right after my daughter was born. Very easy insertion. I have had the usual problems with weight gain, acne, moodiness. I went to get my IUD out on Monday, 3/23. My doctor couldn't find it and I was in agony as he tried to "tease" the string back down out of my uterus. I had always heard the removal was the easy part. I went back today after doping up for the pain, and after thirty minutes, my doc still couldn't find it. Now I have to have an x-ray and surgery done to remove the stupid thing, which has either imbedded in my uterus or perforated into my stomach cavity. It is supposed to be very rare, but it has happened to me, and I just want the thing out of me. I want to get pregnant later this year, and am fearful for my fertility. Think about that very carefully, anyone contemplating it. I had no idea that could happen or I would have NEVER gotten it to begin with.

I started reading the posts with all the side effects and kept thinking I'm not having any of these problems, except a slight increase in the number of pimples I get - then someone mentioned how they're tired constantly no matter how much sleep they get. My doctor's been jumping through hoops trying to figure out what's wrong with me and now it looks like it might just be the frickin' Mirena! I've had it for three and a half years and the worst side effects I've thought I had was cramping around the time I usually get my period (something I've NEVER had before - I was always one of the lucky ones) and my skin was oilier. But the exhaustion and increase in my Bipolar symptom may be side effects too? I need to get this stupid thing out.

I am a 25 year old with Factor V Leiden and was told by doctors that the Mirena would be the best birth control for me since I can't take BC pills anymore. I had the Mirena inserted Nov. 2008 and am having it removed next week. I have had a horrible experience with it. My obgyn told me that the chance of experiencing any side effects was rare since the hormone stays in your uterus. The insertion was extremely painful which I expected since I have never had a child. In the past 4 months I have gained 15 pounds despite regular exercising and eating a low calorie diet, I have a constant stinky discharge, acne across my chin and sides of my face, my hair is falling out, I have no energy and am incredibly tired all the time, have been experiencing nightmares, and have sharp cramps that make me double over in pain. I am a newlywed and have never had any psychological issues. Now I am in therapy for anxiety and depression and after reading all the posts, I now am convinced that this is also a side effect of the mirena. I used to have a healthy sex life and now I have no desire to have sex or be touched by my husband with is causing tension in our new marriage. I was trying to stick out the side effects to see if they would go away since I paid so much money ($600) for the mirena. When I spoke with my obgyn about my side effects she said they were not caused by the mirena because the hormone is directly in your uterus. I am so frustrated! I feel like I have been lied to by my doctor. I am hoping that after removal of the mirena I will feel like my old self again!

have to agree with Mrsbarrett's post right below mine...I have been a lurker on this board for the past couple of months and thank God for it or who knows how crazy i'd be right now!! Here is a list of my side effects and pertinent information:
DOI: October 2008
Side effects were gradual and most evident around the Christmas Holidays:
Dizziness
Weird eye/vision disturbance where i'd lose focus for a moment and then be okay.
Constant spotting of "old blood" nothing much but did require pantiliners 24/7
Anxiety
Hypertension (more than ever, like when I was pregnant, 150-170s/100)
Panic Attacks
Face Dryness
ZERO SEX DRIVE
No "natural" lubrication, but who cares when you have no drive, are spotting all the time, and it hurts to have sex
Vaginal Odor
Mood Swings
Depression
FATIGUE to the point of wanting to stay in bed despite having to care for my 7.5 year old.
Chest pains (kept thinking maybe I had heart trouble, had cardiac workup that came up PERFECT and bloodwork was perfect, Thyroid test was perfect)
Nausea (morning sickness type, would get slightly better in evening but not so much)
IBS symptoms (diarrhea)
DOR: January 23, 2009
2 days later heavy bleeding for a couple of days.....had somewhat of a "crash" the first week where I was still not better. By the 2nd week post removal I was still nauseated in the morning but improved in the late afternoon and got energy boost in late afternoon.By the 3rd week I was totally back to normal!!!!! (well what's normal for crazy me! hahahahha)
My husband came with me to the doc, and she had no problem with removal. I went back for a follow up this past Friday and she saw how normal I am and that I have lost several pounds as well. She realizes I am extremely sensitive to hormone changes but says i'm the only one that she has seen like that. (how many have problems that don't think it is the Mirena...that's what I want to know???)
Anyway, that's my story and i'm sticking to it!!! If anyone would like to chat or share please let me know. I will also add that I have a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (just not practicing since becoming a SAHM) and so I looked up tons of information to figure out what was wrong with me, I really am thankful to have found this site....medical mumbo jumbo is NOTHING when you have your body telling you something and all you fine ladies......Thanks again!

I am 35 years old and LOVE my Mirena. I have NEVER felt better. All these "side effects" sound so crazy to me. I know 10 women who use this product and not one of the complain about anything. They all love it. Its their word of mouth that inspired me to look into it. I have had mine since March 06. I fear for all of you who are having "side effects" that you might be blaming this product, and ignoring that there can be some thing other than the IUD causing your problems. All of these comments are hell bent on blaming Mirena. I'm not saying that its not causing any of these side effects with some of you, but for some, I am wondering if your too busy blaming it, then finding out if there is really something else wrong. I didn't think it hurt that bad at the insertion, a little crampy, but nothing we as women couldn't handle. After I saw this site, I literally contacted the women that I know use it and they all were shocked that people were having such a hard time with it. You would think 1 out of us 10 would have something to say if there was a problem. The only thing in common that we all have is that we went to the same Dr. So maybe that could be an issue with some of you. I didnt bleed for weeks or months. And the pill NEVER could regulate me . Within 3-6 months I had a 90% decrease in my periods ( just like this product states it would do) i had used the vaginal ring before this and that caused some moodiness and was a bit odd during sex, But Mirena has made me feel free, not moody, no pain, no period, I have a strong sex drive ( mainly because I no longer have the worries such as did I remember my pill? Is the ring still in place or did it fall out?) My boyfriend never feels it or the strings ( and I have a short cervical neck!) Nor have I heard such things from my friends and family who do use it. I think if I was having some problems and stumbled across this website I would panic and blame Mirena as well. But in my opinion all these symptoms are things we as women will have happen due to stress, age or routine ob/gyn issues. i actually read in one of these comments someone asking about a lawsuit.... Are you kidding me??? If I were all you with these problems I would seriously check with your doctors and make sure there is nothing else causing your issues...Don't just blame a product with out making sure you know everything thats going on within your own body. I wouldn't take that chance but I am not the one with any problems. I'm sure this method isn't for everyone but my point is that I hope you don't overlook a more serious or undetected problem. good luck to all.

I had Implanon inserted in June 2008, I just had it removed Sept 17 2008. The first side effect was that I gained weight. My appetite increased and I felt like I was constantly hungry. Within the first month I got an Urinary Tract Infection, the infection was so bad that it transferred to my boyfriend through sex.. After a month I started bleeding and it lasted 4 weeks, not spotting just bleeding. I lost my drive for sex, I felt bloated and was too tired ALL THE TIME!!! I was crying over everything, I felt depressed and stressed about everything, my head hurt all the time. My whole body just felt off. I wasn't myself at all. One morning I woke up with a horrible sore throat. I went in for strep test and tested negative. They said it was just a viral infection. A few days after that my muscles started to hurt. My left knee and hip joint began hurting so bad that it was hard to walk and get up out of bed in the morning.(The Implanon was inserted in my LEFT arm). Occasionally I felt tingling in my left arm and fingers. I then notice my left ankle was getting swollen and at that point my whole body felt like it was shutting down.I started to run fevers and thats when I looked up the "possible side effects of Implanon" online. As I read I realized that I had every single side effect even the uncommon more severe ones, but it seemed like my symptoms were multiplied by 100. I called my doctor and she immediately had me come in to have the implanon removed. Today is Sept 22. I have been on bed rest since the implanon was removed. It turns out that my body had rejected the Implanon, treated it like was a foreign object.

I thought I was crazy until I found this site... I've been toying with the idea of taking the nuvaring out because I've been so ridiculously depressed lately, exhausted for no reason, and my sex drive is basically at zero. I had almost convinced myself that I'm just depressed but started thinking about the nuvaring. I've been on it for almost 2 years now, and had minor problems at first but then after I got used to it, it seemed fine. Lately, it's been getting worse. Before I lived with my boyfriend (and in the same city), I worked at a horrible job that made me miserable and depressed and gave me horrible headaches... I thought it was just that, my job. But it's not any better, except the headaches are somewhat better... but I'm more depressed than ever, my sex drive is worsening, I'm crabbier than ever, all I want to do is sleep but when I do sleep it's not good sleep, I have zero energy, I can't bring myself to do the smallest tasks, and I'm so insecure and scared that my bf doesn't love me anymore. I even think I've developed anxiety. Sex hurts almost worse every time, I get that burning thing other people have been discussing, and it burns after sex when I urinate. I asked my gyno about the pain during sex and she almost acted like I was crazy. I think I'm ready to take this thing out. Condoms, here I come again. There were positives to the ring, like a way lighter period, I only have one sort of heavy day, and the rest are super light, and my cramps are nothing compared to what I used to experience. But those positive things do not outweigh my other experiences. The point of going on BC is so you can have sex without getting pregnant... well having sex once a month because I feel bad that my boyfriend isn't getting any is so NOT worth the money I spend on this thing and so not worth the side effects. It's so weird that for almost a year though I was fine on it, it almost makes me think that they changed something about it. And it's weird that the doctors seem almost brainwashed. I'm not the only one who had the gyno acting like they were crazy. I'm hesitant to take it out now, I still have 2 1/2 weeks until I'm supposed to take it out, but I don't want to wait another 2 1/2 weeks if I could start feeling better by then if I took it out now.

I got Mirena Jan. 2008. Since then I get migraines, tension headaches, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, mood swings, bloating (no weight gain), increased heart rate, no sex drive at all (I'm only 21!),and my partner can feel the strings poking him. I finally reached my breaking point with Mirena when I developed lower abdominal pain and a slight discharge. Mirena has infected my uterus and ovaries. This damn thing is coming out ASAP!!!

Hi
I have had mirena for over 1 year and 10 months and completely changed my life Im 22 I feel always bloaded, gaing incredible weight, feel depress, stomach pains all the time n sometimes i feel like there's something wrong with me down there internally cant really explain it I have an average period flow well its completely disappear to just one lil miserable period with mirena, yes I miss my period (and no Im not kidding) let me explain why I feel like all that bleeding that i used to have now its the bloading the stomach pain like something it not leting by body work the way it supposed too n lots of headaches weird huh I know but honest . At first I thought it was me over reacting but now I see like many of you we are feeling the same I know Im crazy for waiting this long and personally would never ever recommend it my sister just had her lil baby grl she ask me like many of my friends and told her not to get mirena i don't want her to go trough with all those horrible symptoms I first thought I was over reacting and seriously going nuts but now Im proud to say my next visit for the removal is on the 18 of sept YES finally why wait so long i was AFRAID of getting pregnant again since im in college. And also because at the doctor they kept saying lil symptoms like that occur but they will decrease but they haven't they gotten worst I talk with my husband we are going to clases for natural birth control yes I know who has the time but trust me is the best choice for your body, not putting up with a bunch of crazy hormones. My mother was right she told women now women don't want to take the time to do the count for natural birth control but yet don't know is the best choice I honestly now know what she talking about are body is a precious temple and should not put it trough horrible thing we are going to regret As for me I just regret not taking this stupid thing before

OMG! I thought I was losing it. Have had the Mirena since April and have gained weight (an entire dress size) for NO REASON, been foggy, moody, no sex drive, joint pains, cramps, etc.I thought I was alone, Did I mention EXHAUSTED all the time and acne on my face and back-sever enough to get antibiotics from the dermatologist?
I also suffer with PCOS--does anyoen else on the Mirena suffer with PCOS? Would be interested to see how it has affected you. Tried BC pills and after awhile they stopped working then switched to the YAZ--DO NOT GO THERE--the worst Pill ever--so not many options for those of us with PCOS. Just can't wait to go to the DR and get this thing out.

Thank you so much for this information. After a year of endless blood tests, specialists and other diagnostics with no answers I have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue to label a concoction of symptoms that include dizziness, extreme fatigue (I have been a runner daily for 8 years but can no longer run), regular 'infections' akin to my vagina being on fire, irregular pap smear, difficulty orgasming (previously never a concern) and so many of the other symptoms listed above that it feels like a checklist reading this amazing site. As I work in a hospital I have undertaken extensive review of medical journals to see if any clinical studies have identified concerns with the mirena - I couldn't find any and so have dismissed my symptoms as unrelated but have always had a gut feeling about it. From being extremely active and passionate about my work, I have had to scale back and back until I now work only three days and rest for the remainder. I can't thank you enough for validating my suspicion that the mirena might be the culprit - it's the only variable my husband and I can think of since the symptoms emerged. I'm going to get this stupid thing out of me as soon as possible.

I had my Mirena removed three days ago and I already feel like if my life is back. I had Mirena since January of 2006 and I had been feeling like another woman for the last six months...The horrible side affects included: Lower back pain, fatigue, depression, cloudiness, slurred speech, rapid heart rate, thinning hair, high blood pressure and the list goes on.....I can't thank one of my co-workers enough for opening up my eyes to take this thing out of me....Of course the doctor told me that the Mirena had nothing to do with the way I was feeling, but I decided to have it removed anyways. He sent me to do some bloodwork, so I did this morning...He's blaming the way I felt on my thyroid....I'll keep you posted....No matter what.... I am glad the Mirena is out!!!

I just Finally got my IUD out today YAY I have had a ton of S/E's & of course 2 diff docs both deny it But I don't care I just wanted it out doc said the most common S/E is a headache R U Serious??!! I never had headaches only other more scary stuff, floaters in my vision for the last 15 months, muscle aches & joint pain no energy no sex drive anxiety the list goes on & on I posted awhile back
anyways the removal wasn't that bad at all not compared to the placement of it but I did have some cramping & within 1 hr I was bleeding all over the place!! so now I'll probably be bleeding for another 6 months just like after they put it in But it's all worth it If I feel better & feel like I did b4 I had this stupid thing put in me
GL to e/o & I'm so glad I found this place I probably would of never put everything together if it wasn't for all of u sharing your stories
I'll come back in a few weeks & update on how I'm feeling I'm hoping the floaters will be the 1st thing to go away b/c they are really annoying at times

Hello, my name is pam. About 6 weeks after my son was born I had made the choice to get the mirena iud. Well for 7mon after i got it I bleed. Also, new things started happening. I went to my doctor and discovered that I had an awful yeast infection due to the iud not being set right. He gave me one round of meds just for yeast infections. I went back for a check up and it hadn't cleared a bit. Got second round of med. Then about 2wks afterward I got a call from my doctor. He said that they found yeast infection, staff infection, and a strep infection that I am still having problems with after the level 4 anti-biotic that he gave me. I have headaches, body aches, no sex drive what so ever, mood swings that would send anyone away, and I am also on anti-depression meds ever since Ive had the iud.
