This website is a joke! After I had my Mirena inserted 4 months ago I started reading on the internet about possible side effects. I was furious with myself that I hadn't Read up on this before the appointment. There were so many horrible reviews involving hair loss, weight gain, acne, and mood swings! I was so scared and actually thought about removing the Mirena that week. I then found multiple reviews on websites not owned and operated by other drug companies that are trying to scare people in order to prevent the sale and use of the Mirena and the side effects listed here were a 180 degree difference. I have not experienced any weight gain, in fact, I recently was able to shed 5 pounds from picking up running again (so it is possible to LOSE weight on the Mirena as well). I have had zero hair loss, have not had a pimple anywhere or any random hair growth. My live in boyfriend and I have discussed if we've noticed any mood swings or changes and my mood which is usually optimistic and positive has been the same since I had the Mirena inserted. My periods are much lighter and although they can last an extra day or two more than what I was used to, they are light and I have not had any cramping. I'm writing this review not because I absolutely love the Mirena, I think it's a fine form of BC but who LOVES their BC, isn't it all kind of a pain. The Mirena is by far the most convenient form of birth control and I don't worry at all about missing a day and the chance of getting pregnant. I'm writing this review because I encourage everyone to talk more with their doctors about the side effects and look around on the internet for REAL websites.

I am a 35 year old mum of 2 girls,my youngest being almost 4 month old, previous to having my baby had the non hormone coil fitted with great success and no problems.and following my midwifes advice had the mirena coil fitted after much discussion with both my doctor and nurse thought it was my best option as no other contraceptive suited as well as the coil.however having the morena coil in for the past 5 weeks have suffered from an almost constant brown smelly discharge, weight gain, painful joints, lack of energy and mood changes.after researching the mirena found all the symptoms id been having are fairly common place.after contacting my GP speaking to both the nurse and GP have convinced them to take it out and fit a non hormone coil.
at no time upto or since was i told of the side effects,in particular depression from which i suffered from the birth of my daughter which the same doctor who convinced me the mirena was perfect for me prescribed me thae anti depressants i needed to beat my post-natal depression.
i find it utterly astounding that something which claimed to be the answer could be prescribed for me.im not saying the mirena isn't for some, but it def wasn't for me and before you consider having one fitted do your research before you have one fitted.

BTW just wanted to point out that most people turn up this page on a search because they are having negative side effects. Therefore, most people who post are having similar bad side effects, and this is where blog postings tend to get biased because people who are having success on the drug are not blogging about it. I just think that all the 14-16 year old girls who are now on BC should have access to unbiased information and in no case should be encouraged to stop a medication and "fight the effects of coming off" without consulting their doctor first. No offense to 'emhatesyaz' intended.

I have been on YAZ for the past two and half months. Over the past two weeks I have become highly emotional, feel like crying for no reason, my skin itches to the point where I have struggled with sleeping at night and now I have been having an itchy sore throat. The entire time my breasts have been sore as well as have grown substantially. I am not sure if the sore throat is a symptom, but I am curious if anyone else has experienced this symptom of an itchy, dry throat. I have heard that after the third month symptoms can subside as your body balances out. However, I am considering just terminating the use of this birth control. Has anyone had success or a decrease in symptoms after the third month? By the way, my periods have been normal.

I am 26 years old, have a great job, boyfriend, friends and family. Everything was great until Oct. 1st, 2007 - the day I started taking Yaz. The first week, I would get into bad moods for no reason, and by the 4th month my life was spinning out of control. Actually, my mind was - my life was still near perfect. Here were my symptoms during this period: Panic Attacks, nausea, shaking, de-realization and so much more. There was a point where I was scared to live and scared to die. I didn't even want to leave my house. This is when I decided to see a psychiatrist who percribed me Klonopin (a form of Valium to get me through the days.)

I stopped taking YAZ The end of Jan 2008 (after I put 2 and 2 together), so I have been clean of it for approx. 2.5 months now. But the upsetting part for me was I thought the day I stopped taking the pill, was the day I would get my life back. Not so!!! I have been feeling a little better but I cry because I I still do not feel like my old self, which was happy, outgoing and full of energy. Does anyone know how long it takes to feel better? I hear 3 months, but I just want to know how long it took for someone to feel normal again. My anxiety is mostly gone, but now I just feel withdrawn and like my head is in a constant fog w/ extreme fatigue :(:(:(

Girls - I feel your pain. And I also see the other side, with the women that had sucess on this pill. My two closest friends were on Yaz and loved it! But for me, it took many months from my life and I am still not 100%. Thanks for everyone who shared. I think this is the first time I ever blogged on a web-site, and you girls gave me the encouragement to share my story. Please feel free to send me a personal e-mail for support.

I have a herniated disc L5S1. I had my first of six injections in September of 2006. for three months I had problems with my periods. After my third shot my husband and I decided to start trying to get pregnant. We wanted to try earlier but my back pain stopped us from trying. Ever since I received the first shot I have had problems with fertility. I do not get the cervical mucas anymore. This mucas keeps the sperm alive and helps them travel to the egg. I also had an ectopic pregnancy a year ago in April of 2007. I know that Kenalog has had something to do with both of these issues. I have been trying to get pregnant again for about 9 months with no sucess. My husband has been checked out so we know that it is not him. I have a son so I know that everything was fine before these shots. When I talk to my doctor about my problems they tell me it is not the Kenalog because it does not stay in your system for that long. I say that this is a steriod and you always here how bad they are and the horrible side effects. I know that this stuff is the reason that I cannot get pregnant and it is probably what caused the ectopic pregnancy that almost killed me.

I am in the process of getting my second Mirena IUD inserted, as I personally have had great success with mine. I have noticed a slight decrease in my sex drive (which honestly is high), but it hasn't seemed to effect my ability to enjoy sex or orgasm, and in fact has made it a little easier to concentrate sometimes. lol. The only annoying side effect I had was about 2 months of spotting on and off after I had it inserted. Within 3-4 months I stopped having a period and/or spotting almost entirely, and when I did have a "period", it was usually every 4-6 months, and it only lasted a day. It was actually more like a day of heavy spotting... which I consider a huge benefit, and is one of my favorite things about the Mirena.

I think we all have different reactions to the different IUD's, and in fact my first experience with the copper IUD was not as good as the current Mirena. With the copper IUD, my periods would last a solid week, and were heavy and painful for the first 5 days. I don't usually have hard periods so this was very distressful for me, and actually impacted work... prior to this I had never missed a day of work, but every few months I would get cramps that would have me curled in a ball whining and whimpering.

For all of you that are looking at possibly getting an IUD, don't discount the Mirena or the copper IUD because of another person's reviews. Each of us react differently to hormones and foreign bits of plastic and/or metal placed in our bodies. What is important is to do thorough research, find a doctor you trust and who is willing to listen to and discuss symptoms, and to be aware and educated on side effects of both.

Good Luck!

I am a 36 year old MALE and was diagnosed w/ hypothyroiditis about 3 months ago. My doctor placed me on levoxyl after confirming his concern through blood tests. Prior to taking levoxyl, I had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. After 2 months on the med, I noticed much improvement and decrease in symptoms - stop of hair loss, better sleep, more energy, ability to concentrate, and no more constipation. From reading nothing but bad news regarding levoxyl on this site, I pray that my sucess continues in the long term w/ levoxyl and I hope all you find something that works.

Does any know of a support website for MALES regarding hypothroiditis?

People taking this drug for seizures are going to have very different experiences then the bipolars, I believe. Pretty much everyone has some weight gain, but not major (10-20lbs).
I was diagnosed as a rapid cycling bipolar, and before this drug, I was completely miserable. I was started on Depakote instead of Lithium due to fewer side effects, and it was a huge sucess.
Moods are stable, manic episodes are gone, sleep is stabilzed, libido is normal, depression is rare. I am 20 lbs heavier, happy, and "normal". I can't say enough good things about this drug.
Bipolars, steer away from the negative comments here and go to the bipolar support sites. You will find almost nothing but positive testimonials about this drug for our condition.
