I already listed all my side effects on the 4th of Feb. I immediately called the doctor and set up an appointment to have it removed. I'm not waiting till my hair falls out before I get it out of me. The doctor said they couldn't remove it for another month so I decided I'd just wait patiently until I read someone's comment saying that you can EASILY remove it yourself! I went in the bathroom, washed my hands, squatted and reached up, found the strings and tugged gently. I'M FREE!!! YAY!!
My side effects were:
Nausea
Vision Loss (seeing spots, and blurriness, pressure behind eyes)
Back Pain
Knee and other joint pain
Headaches
Extreme Irritability (mood swings)
Lack of energy
Weight Gain
Bloating (very rounded belly)
Discharge with an odor
Dizziness
Abdominal pain
Chest pain
Pain in breasts
Loss of sex drive
Dehydration (so thirsty, but very dry lips and skin no matter how much I drink)
Water retention
Anxiety attacks
Ear infections
Sugar cravings
Sweating
I'll update you on whether things change (and how fast)! Fingers crossed, I'm so hopeful!
I have to say that within minutes of removing it I'm dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous and my head is suddenly killing me!

I had Mirena for 1 year. Suffered from lack of libido, weight gain, bloating, depression, moodiness, extreme tiredness, anxiety, lowered immune system (seem to get every virus doing the rounds and take forever to get well), sugar cravings & occasional abdominal cramping like ovulation pain.
2 weeks after Mirena removal: mild breakthrough bleed, dry eyes, feel less bloated, loss of 2lbs but SEVERE ACNE on my chin which I didn't have before! Most people get acne while the Mirena is in, did anyone else get it after it was removed?????

I had mine removed last month and still enjoying the NEW ME! I am so happy and cheerful now without the back pain and achy joints and anxiety attacks. Still getting rid of acne, chin hair and 40 lbs but WOW I am so grateful I found this site to validate that I wasn't losing my mind. There seems to be 1% of the population who have no problems at all with this IUD but for the other 99% of us ... BE CAREFUL and REMOVE IT ASAP! By the way, I still have not had a cycle since the 2 days of spotting after it was removed ... and the removal pain is ZERO compared to the insertion. I am also changing to a female holistic obgyn since my male doc refused to acknowledge my valid side effects - ARGH!!!

I am soooo happy to have my IUD removed ... back pain is gone and sex is enjoyable again. As for the anxiety and depression, I had to increase the dose of meds I was already taking for depression but have now gone back to the regular dose. Those of you out there may want to consider an antidepressant to help tackle the mood swings caused by Mirena. However, I am still struggling with the 40 lbs I gained and just gained 4 more (ARGH!) ... I know my body is out of whack now since I am not taking hormones anymore, but I still have sugar cravings and snack attacks all day - HELP! anyone able to get their weight off after Mirena???? how do you do it?

I can't believe I didn't google this stuff before i got the IUD. well I had mine painfully inserted in April 07 and have gained 40 lbs since then. I also have severe lower back pain, achy knees, lack of sex drive, anxiety, acne from outer space, severe sugar cravings and bloating. I am soooo relieved to know I am not going crazy when in fact my MALE doctor told me the same thing that the IUD shouldn't have caused any of these side effects. on that note, I am scheduled to have it removed in 3 days and see how things go. I am so tired of people telling me to just eat right and exercise, all the time I knew I wasn't doing anything out of the norm to gain this much. thank you all for sharing and helping me to see the light!!!

Hi everyone, I just have to tell you all what a comfort this site has been for me. I really feel like a crazy bitch frankly with all of my mood swings, ill patience and irritability....among so many other side affects. It upsets me to think how much this is affected my family. I just had Mirena removed last night and I've been on the verge of tears all day. Has this happened to anyone else? How have you all felt after you had it removed?? How long did it take before you started feeling normal again? I'd had had it in for a little over 2 years and I almost feel like I don't even know what normal is for me anyone. I take an anti-depressant and hate the idea of needing to be on medication. I've been trying to wean myself off and every time I have tried in the past I crash really bad. I'm sure that has something to do with me feeling so crappy but I'm hoping that things will even out soon. Thanks for listening.

Hi Danielle here, I have posted in the past, I was wondering if any of you that suffered from anxiety, and nausea post Mirena, when did you see an improvement, was it after a couple cycles? Are any of you on an anti- anxiety meds? They say that when the anxiety goes that the rest follows, is there truth to this? I am 4 weeks post removal and I still wake up with the feeling of dread, I take Lorazepam to help, but I am sick of taking a med I just want to feel like "me" again, what an uphill battle, while I do notice an improvement these pat 2 weeks to the 1st two weeks I am still very concerned about the anxiety and nausea, I went to the mall yesterday for 3 hours, and came home a wreck! crying, dread, I hate it, can anyone please tell me when I should expect to see an improvement? I know it is different for all but any information would be appreciated.

hi there folks,
i've only been taking yasmin for 3 days and i've felt aggressive, anxious, a bit vague, tense, wired, etc, etc. on the up side i don't have to fight sugar cravings now cos my appetite practically disapeared, and i dumped a guy that i've always been too forgiving of, cos instead of feeling mildly frustrated by his stupid mind games and evasive circumlocution, i got totally p*ssed off and fed up and ended things. (good move, really) so i kinda don't mind the aggro feeling. it's making me more assertive than i usually am.
anyways, i've read about 5 pages of posts here and have noticed that a lot of the posts are about what happened after people came off yasmin. i want to stick it out for a month or so and see if the side effects go away, but i'm worried that if they don't, and i go off it, the side effects will get worse and i'll stack on weight.
so my question is: to the people who suffered anxiety and weight gain after coming off yasmin, did you also have these side effects while you were on it (but just not as bad) and it just got worse after you stopped, or did you not have the side effects and they only started after you stopped?
cheers folks!

I was on wellbutrin. incredible drug no sexual side effects & weight LOSS!! yeeyaah! i was thin and the drug was heavenly. then i had a seizure and woke up in a pool of my own blood. two new front teeth later my dr put me on celexa. within exactly two days of being on 10 mg (went up to 20 mg on day 4) i couldn't orgasm. i have been on it for two weeks (i am an athlete and get a ton of exercise) and i am definitely gaining weight. lots of sugar cravings. will this stop? will this stop in two more weeks when i hit the 4 week point? I heard for some people the side effects wear off. has anyone experienced this? if not i'm going off this stuff tomorrow (i'll wean).

This webpage is a Godsend! I thought I had diabetes, chronic daily headache, stomach ulcers or was just a crazy hypochondriac. I thought the symptoms would cease after 3 months but it's 9 months now and the "dry heaving" is still horrible, not to mention the upset stomach all day. I thought I was losing it. I've had:
1. 0 sex drive
2. Vaginal dryness
3. MOnthly yeast infections (prior to this I only have had 4 in my life.
4. Migraine - the 1st one in 18 years + near daily headaches
5. Painful boobs
6. Hyperpigmentation spots on my face
7. Dry heaving and nausea
8. Sugar cravings & increased appetite AFTER my period
9. The 1st few months I bled like I had been shot!
10.Dizziness
11.COnstipation
It's been awful. Anyone else going through this, I empathize with you completely b/c I thought I was a big complainer with all of this in my head. The 2 good things have been that I haven't gained weight and don't get water retention anymore, but it's not enough to stay on it. I've run the gamut with OC's and don't know what else to take other than risk pregnancy by taking nothing. Good luck to all of you.

Just want to survey everyone and ask for responses for the following 3 questions:
1. how long did you keep your Mirena and if you no longer have it, why did you have it removed?
2. how many of you had your thyroid checked? who's came back abnormal? what were the levels?
(I'm a medical student doing research on this one since I believe the levonorgestrel affects our thyroid hormone. My TSH was elevated to 5.2 which is considered "subclinical HYPOthyroidism". This was mid cycle when my natural progesterone AND synthetic progestin were cumulatively high. When I had it rechecked 6 weeks later (around my period when any natural progesterone level is gone) it was normalized at 1.5. So I think that the P+P screws up our thyroid and can throw us into a high TSH and "hypothyroid state". The opposite effect may be true during menstruation and we can become HYPERthyroid for a few days... hence the really bad anxiety?!)
3. where is everyone from? perhaps we can have support group meetings?
