On Doxycycline 100mg twice a day for 12 days then 200mg twice a day for 12 days for very-likely Lyme Dz (fever, hip rash) apparently diagnosed in the first month of infection. First few days on Doxy I had a lot of esophageal spasms (kind of a cramping in the middle of the chest), but those subsided.

About the time I was finishing the 24 day course of Doxy, got red-violet itchy rash of both hands just over the lower knuckles (where the fingers meet the hands) after a long drive - unsure of sun exposure. Just walking in the sun for a few minutes sets it off. Little improved now 6 days off the Doxy. I'm a doc and first wondered if it was a sign of dermatologists - a pretty bad disease that includes a knuckle rash and muscle breakdown and is sometimes related to Lyme or cancers! It was very reassuring to read all the patient prior reports here of very similar problems on Doxycycline. This is a great site and glad to contribute to it with my story.

I am taking 100mg 2x a day of Minocycline to treat my acne. About 2 weeks after the start of this medication, I gained 10 pounds virtually overnight. I know it was that fast because I see a weight loss doctor weekly and I'm on a very precise diet and exercise plan and it I was fine until about day 14. I went to bed the night before and woke up the next morning with an additional 10 lbs. Right now, I've been taking it for about 6 weeks and have managed to keep the weight gain to a minimum average a week by adding additional workouts to my regimen for a total gain of 14 lbs. Although it's treating the acne very well, the money I've spent to lose 53 lbs over the course of a year just to turn around and gain 14 in a matter of weeks is extremely frustrating. I did not have this side effect with Doxcy, but sun exposure was causing severe burns so we switched meds.
When I return to the doctor in a couple of weeks, I will see if there is an alternative solution.

I just turned 18 years old and was prescribed Doxycycline Hyclate 100mg, BenzaClin (Benzoyl peroxide), and Differin 0.3%. I've been on benzaclin and differin for about 3 years now. About 2 months ago I was prescribed doxycycline for my acne. I specifically told my dermatologist that I wanted a higher dosage of acne medication since the minocycline 5mg wasn't strong enough for me; I had taken it 2 years prior to my visit. But when I would take doxycycline I'd feel a litte bit of nausea coming my way so I decided to drink some water with it. Shortly after I'd get something to eat. I'd feel better soon after. I've been on this medication for almost a month now and I'm not feeling any adverse side effects. My acne has somewhat cleared up but then i breakout again, around the same area. I'm hoping my acne will clear by the time I go for my check up in feb but if it doesn't, i want to be prescribed accutane instead. Also, stop the medication if you're having horrible side effects, obviously there's something wrong. It could also be an allergic reaction, I'm just fine but then again, I'm not allergic to anything and I also avoid a lot of sun exposure.

i been on warfarin since august 08 - its now end of feb 09, i have not noticed any serious side effects apart from blood in nose when wake up and snotter for the first time each day (excuse that term) .
i have been sitting under newly installed lighjt at work and find it to be very hot on my head... everyone else says its not, but i cant stay there after ten minutes... its mildly uncomfortable.. and it got to thinking that maybe warfarin can effect the sun and the taking of the tablets, im on 6mg a day and i have heart problems, heart failure and cardiomyopathy, i would like to here from any one that has problems with sun...... and after how long hair loss and teeth problems came after taking it - im only 24 but worry about it thank you for your time i also get fatigue

Sensitivity to sun exposure, dizziness about 30 minutes after BID dosage of 450mg. I am taking t-leptal following neurosurgery 12 yrs ago. I am experiencing ED and impotency, too, and wonder if they are drug induced or only age related(60).

I've seen only one reference to this. Any others? Have you?

I don't know if this is a side effect of this medication but the right side of my throat is very sore.
I forgot about the sun exposure warning and was working in the sun all day yesterday. After only 30 minutes my skin was on fire! I ended up with a really bad sunburn. I work in the sun all the time and never burn, my skin is pretty tan. Take that warning serious, AVOID the sun! I'm in a lot of pain, especially my lips!

I have been taking 100 mg Doxy for about 4 weeks, with 2 weeks left to go. I have experienced the sunburn, even with 50 SPF sunblock! I also have had the tingling feeling when I sweat or am exposed to water. I think this tingling is caused by sun exposure, though. I may not look burned but feel it. Right now I feel like I have acid reflux, almost constantly, like there is a tickle in my throat right under my sternum. No heartburn, just a little queasiness. I found out from this website that you shouldn't take it before you go to bed, which I have been doing, so I'll stop that. I've also been trying to take it without food but it causes my stomach to get upset. Is there any food anyone recommends for dealing with this? Does alcohol affect this?

I find some of these posts interesting because it seems as if some folks either do not completely read the dosing instructions that come with all medications when they are picked up from a pharmacy or given by a doctor, or they just choose to ignore them. I have been on Doxy for six months for the treatment of Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It's been no picnic at times but I feel 100 times better than before I started it. When I started taking Doxy, I too didn't pay much attention to the dosing instructions and I learned the hard way with some uncomfortable side-effects. Here are a few recommendations from someone who has been taking this drug long-term. 1. You must eat! Eat a small snack (banana, crackers, fruit) before you take the drug. Do not take it with something that you know upsets your stomach, also do not take it with dairy or any supplements containing magnesium or iron. 2. After taking the drug, eat another small snack, same as in #1. Avoid any of the supplements or dairy listed above for at least two hours. 3. Imperative!!! Take a good probiotic regularly (30-50 billion cfu). Antibiotics are designed to kill stuff in your body. They do not distinguish between bad and good however. You need the probiotic to replace the good bacteria in your digestive tract, otherwise your body will not digest properly. I was constipated for quite some time before I figured this one out. 4. I saw a few other folks mention this one. Do not lay down immediately following taking the drug. Again, I learned the hard way, I had severe GERD for a time as well. 5. Avoid long-term sun exposure. This was the latest. My skin has always had some natural pigmentation in it for a white guy and I have not burned too easily. On the Doxy though, I found out that I burn extremely fast. I guess I will be under an umbrella at the beach in a few weeks. 6. Don't panic! This drug was made to fight infections/disease. Be prepared for some side-effects, but also don't be afraid to see your doctor if they are just unbearable. All people do not respond to medications in the same manner. What works for you or me might not work for someone else. I hope this information helps someone out there. I know it is incredibly frustrating when you are taking something to cure an illness and more things go wrong.

I took Doxy last summer for cystic acne. It worked fine and I didn't have any problems, and my skin cleared up nicely. I had some left over (bad, bad, I know but it hasn't yet expired!) so I started taking it again about 4 days ago. I noticed, almost immediately, severe tingling and burning in my fingers and hands and up into my arms when I am out in the sun and for hours afterwards. Also water (like washing my hands) makes the tingly feeling much worse. Weird, right? My two index fingers are bright red and any touch burns.

It's weird because last summer when I was on it I was out in the sun all the time with no problems at all.

I have been taking Doxycycline for 10 days. I noticed on about the 4th day that any sun exposure was painful and also the hands tingling and even burning. But the weirdest of all is the effect water has on my hands. It will cause them to burn and will even turn red on the knuckles. This is painful. This scared me as the doctor didn't go over this with me and I am new to Doxycycline. Thank God today is my last day.

Thought the tingling and severe burning was from Yoder's Good Health Receipe. But I've had all these herbs previously. Then researched side effects from Doxyclycline. Wow! I started with severe tingling on hands, which turned to burning. Spread to face, elbow area, knees and ankles. Is this normal? I've been miserable for 2 day. Minor sun exposure. Gees!

So I started taking YASMIN in December 07. I switched to YAZ in January 08 and just quit a week ago. So about 4 months of bc. A week ago, I broke out in hives and rashes. I would itch one spot and then others would form. The areas get hot and the welts raise up my skin. It started when I was out in the sun but it couldn't have been sun poisoning because I never got burnt. I am diagnosing myself rather than a doctor because they do NOT know everything. After reading into the YAZ and YASMIN side effects, I am not risking anymore problems. Oh and I got an upper respitory infection along with the rash. This lingering cough has a weaze and phligmy sound. My friends are concerned with it too. I have never been the type of person to suffer from any major sickness or skin problem. I am tough skinned and have never gotten any kind of food allergy. I am 24, 5'6'' and in semi-athletic shape. I am an actor and model and I cannot afford to get rashes and a bad horsey cough! YAZ was great for 2 months and now bam! Downfall happening. Temporary relief-cortozone cream and antihistamines like benadryl.
YAZ benefit-clear skin, no PMS
YAZ side effect-rash, no sex drive/libido loss, difficult/no orgasm, appetite like a hog! Food #1 thought. Packed on pounds quick.
YASMIN benefit-clear skin, lost weight quick
YASMIN side effect- a little loopy, speech impediment, no sex drive/libido loss, no orgasm, couldn't even fake an orgasm!

Hi all! I just began taking YAZ two weeks ago and things were fine up until two days ago. I started experiencing itching on several parts of my boy an last night, realized I had hives on my waist at my back, near my underarms and have serious itching all over the rest of my body including the palms of my hands. Please, please, please if anyone reads this an has had similar side effects, please let me know. Furthermore, I did not take the pill last night as I knew this could be the only thing causing these issues. Does anyone know the reprecution of stopping the pill mid month? Please let me know and thanks for your help!

I have been told by my dermatologist that the extensive brown patches on one cheek and line of patches along the other cheek, along my jaw line and brown mottling around my lips are a reaction to Doxycycline after being in the sun. I was prescribed 100 mg daily about mid-May for six weeks by my family physician as an anti-malarial treatment when I went to South Africa. I took them a few days before, for the two weeks I was there, and about 4 weeks afterward.

This dermatologist had completed a plasma resurfacing on my entire face the last of December. I thought this was the reason for my skin splotching that occurred when I started being in the sun beginning in June. I'm still wondering.

Has ANYONE had the facial reaction I described from Doxycycline when combined with sun exposure?

Face and Neck Rash similar to acne. May be associated with sun exposure while taking the medication E-mycin.
