Recently I was prescribed bactrim for a staph infection. On the fourth day I developed a severe rash all over my body. Swelling of my feet and hands. By the time I got to the Dr. my blood pressure had dropped dangerously low and I nearly fainted. The Dr. gave me three shots, cortisone, prednisone and one other I cant remember. By that time my breathing was weak. So the Doctor sent me by ambulance to ER.During the five minute ride my pressure dropped really low again. The EMT started an IV. SInce Primary care Dr. had already taken steps to treat me, ER did very little other than keep watch of vital sighns and let IV finish. ER Dr. concluded it was do to bactrim. He prescribed prednisone and over the counter benadryl and sent me home. After taking prednisone rash seemed to get worse, noticed new rash behind ears and on the top of my head were lumps. Blood pressure has been spuradic at best, but not dangerous. It has been 24 hours now and no changes. My side effects include headache, backache, swelling of feet and hands, rash all over body, itching, raised welps on legs, arms, behind ears and on top of head. The swelling of my feet has went down but my hands are still swollen and sore to the touch. One question. There seems not to be much medicine to help this. I just have to let it run its course how long could the recovery take.

Lisinopril is poison, literally!!!! I have had high blood pressure in the past and recently it became a bit too high. My doctor placed me on Lisinopril. I am 41 years old and have NEVER had any problems with my heart rate. After just 5 days of taking this poison I had to be rushed to the hospital with a heart rate of 178 bpm!!!! 2 days later I have intense kidney pain. I am glad I found this site to answer my questions. My cardiologist's nurse's response when I asked her if the Lisinopril caused my kidney pain "Oh no, it couldn't be the medicine". The ER doctor's response when I asked him if Lisionpril could have caused the rapid heart rate "Oh no, it couldn't be the medicine". What are these people on????????? It's like the work for the medicine companies! I can't wait to show the nurse all of the stuff I have printed out about Lisinopril.....No one should ever take this poison, ever!!!!!!!! Stop before you take it and don't take it. It has even killed people before from kidney failures. Read up about it first, I wish I had..........now I am stuck with it in my system and don't know how long before it comes out completely.

My sister-in-law started taking Advair about 6 months ago and since then she has been going down hill. From Dec. 20 2007 to today 1/16/08 she has been hospitalized 3 times. First time for pneumonia. Second time for swelling of ankles, feet and belly. Also serious diarrhea. Third time for difficulty with breathing and continued swelling of feet, ankles and abdomen. I am beginning to suspect Advair.

The flushing didn't start for me until after I'd been taking it a couple of weeks, and seems to be getting worse. I am also experiencing bad swelling of feet and ankles. Muscles in back of my thighs are very sore, just like they got when I was put on statins several years ago, and I had to stop taking them because I got where I could hardly get up from a sitting position. I was assured this is not a statin and led to believe it is "safe". I also have arrhythmia and cannot afford to have my heart racing, which hasn't happened yet, but I think this Niaspan is going to go the way of the statins for me. I want to know what percentage of heart attack victims are on cholesterol lowering drugs - the truth. How can I find out? Thanks. Ernestine B.

Had cortisone shot two days later had severe pain in Heart (not chest) lasted no longer then 60 seconds. Pain grew intensity started at 1 and went to about an 8. Thought I was going to dye. Pain was horrible. Went away as fast as it came. About 5 minutes later got in car to go to work 3pm. 5 miles down the rd, arches of both feet started itching and tingling really bad, had to take shore off to itch, fingers then started tingling and itching too. Anus also started itching, thank goodness not bad, had hemmoriods removed two years ago. Made it to work, Caregiver, could not work still itching and tired, head dizzy, weakness, waited two hours before I could drive home. Was ill all weekend, heart started beating irregular, now it is worse. Told Doctor, she said I had anxiety attack and gave me another shot. Heart got worse, swelling of feet and fingers, depression, dizzy, really sad. Christmas time and could not shop because I was too tired and fatiqued. Went into hospital, potassium level low was ok before, irregular heart beat worse, heart hurts all the time, fatiqued all the time, short of breath, dizzy a lot. Cannot do the things I used to do. Cannot sleep on my back, have to sleep in recliner or wedge pillow, cannot stand having weight on my chest especially on my heart. Have to go slow, been 1year 2 months now and doc said it would go away after 7 months, another one of her patients had this happen to him and she said he was better in 7 months. Doctors say I will have to live with it now. I say no.

have been on toprol for about 2 months now, though i wasn't sure i needed it because i had been battling an infection at the time my blood pressure was determined high. now my feet are swollen so badly i can barely wear shoes. feel like sausages. because of this swelling i have pain when i walk and many small blood vessels are breaking.

i contacted my doctor and he says this is not a side effect to toprol, even though i shared with him that it is indicated to be a dangerous side effect on the manufacturer's website.

anyone else experiencing severe swelling of feet?

hello
i am 37 and have had severe chronic asthma all my life. as a child, teen, and young adult i was in the emrgency room at least twice a year for cold related asthma problems. i started taking theophylline at the age of 16, used over the counter inhalers til my mid-twenties when was given albuterol, and have gone on prednisone treatments numerous times. about 2 years ago my condition started deterioating, none of my previous medications were working well. by this time last year i was so bad that i went through an albuterol inhaler every two weeks, and i was constantly sick with lung infections. thats when my pulmonary dr (same one for almost 20 yrs) put me on advair and singulair. i noticed a MAJOR, near miraculous change for the positive almost right away, i could breathe again! i haven't been this clear for years. a few months after i started treatment i gained 10 lbs in less than a month. i thought it was because i changed birth control pills but changing back didn;t seem to help. i have started having attacks of diarrhea at least once a week, gas, bloating, swelling (of feet, hands, middle). lately i've been feeling nauseous, my lifleong insomnia has gotten MUCH worse, i've had blurry vision and the feeling like my head is going to explode. not to mention dizzines, lightheadedness, pressure in my head, dry mouth, hoarseness, back & feet pain, severe anxiety, tremors, rapid heartbeat- what seem to be all the classic symptoms! i had no idea it was the medication. i was so ill the other day i almost had my boyfriend take me to the emrgency room. i had been hearing on the news about serevent being unsafe so i started looking up the side effects and realized that's what it was (i now also see singulair can have similar effects) i stopped taking the advair for 2 days but my severe asthma started returning almost imeediately so i had to use it this morning- and i feel like CRAP right now. i know i need to see my dr ASAP but i am worried about controlling my asthma- i can't deal with these side effects but i also can't return to the state i was in last year- i could NOT BREATHE and was using my albuterol so much it was causing it's own problems (jittery, rapid heartbeat). PLEASE email me (******)if anyone has had any luck with alternatives! (does flovent cause the same long term problems?)

Ref, Swelling of feet and legs: Try to think back about whether the swelling happened before or after you went off the Neurontin, as this drug acts like a strong diuretic, and if your kidneys are not working correctly (your doctor) can check this for you) one of the first places fluid collects is in the lower extremities. If the swelling started two weeks ago it could be a 'rebound effect' from going off the drug.

Also, diabetes and congestive heart failure have symptoms of swelling in the feet and lower legs. It depends on what condition you were taking the Neurontin for; obviously it's a bad symptom, but probably is only peripherally connected to Neurontin. Gapentin, the primary ingredient of N. is often given to people who are on kidney dialysis, since that is the primary effect it has on one's body.

JanK, Neurontin taker, and a person who has researched this drug extensively for physical effects.
