Hi Everyone! I am a 40 year old mother of 6 that has just had her second Mirena IUD put into place on April 10th, 2009. On Easter Sunday (April 12th) I woke with a lot of joint pain, back pain, breast pain, severe nausea, headache, dizziness, faintness and extremely low blood pressure (87/54). My first Mirena was placed in October of 2001, 6 months after the birth of my last child. All went pretty well with no real bad complaints the first time other than the normal cramping and bleeding. I didn't even have headaches or moodiness (my doctor thinks it was because I was breast feeding at the time and the body produces a lot of natural progesterone during this). Things took a turn for me in 2003 though and have progressively gotten worse since; I have had so many crazy ailments (everything from muscle spasms, thinning hair to stabbing pains behind the eye) , that even I was beginning to think it was all in my head! It all started with an ovarian cyst that had to be surgically removed in Dec. 2003, from there I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and an extremely high heart beat rate in Sept. 2004 (on meds to current date). I get sick very easily now and I had gotten strep 3 times in the winter of 2006, so I had to have my tonsils and adenoids removed in March 2007. I have now been diagnosed with Raynauds Phenomenon and Glaucoma and suffer from an array of symptoms. My most recent mammogram showed that I have a lot of breast cysts now as well. I have been tested for MS, Lupus, Lime Disease, RA and many other things; everything comes up negative. Due to the current symptoms and symptoms I have had during the first Mirena (never made the connection until now) it prompted me to do some research. What I found was just shocking to me! The Mirena is made with a synthetic progesterone (progestin) called levonorgestrel. If you research this, you will find a huge list of possible adverse side effects; many of which I have suffered from. I have read many different sites and posts from countless people that have been affected by the Mirena. Most of these stories have a huge similarity to each other. I am now 10 days into these symptoms; yesterday I went to my Dr. because the symptoms were not getting any better and I wanted to discuss the possibility that most of my problems since 2003 may have been caused by the Mirena. My doctor did not confirm my suspicions, but she did not deny that it could be a possibility either. What occurred to both her and I was that I had left the first Mirena in longer than suggested; it should have been replaced around late 2006 to early 2007, but I was sick and had other surgery, so I just kept putting it off. Due to this, the effectiveness of the hormone progestin was wearing off over the past year or so; in the past 6 months (until now) I have been pretty much symptom free (that was why I had the Mirena replaced). The fact that my symptoms are suddenly back and in full force only 2 days after the insertion of the new Mirena, strongly suggests that the Mirena is responsible for most if not all my ailments. Over the last 6 months, even my blood pressure had gotten better and I had to lower my dosage of meds to compensate for the change; now my blood pressure is jumping all over the place again. I am now considering having the Mirena removed before it causes any other symptoms and completely ruins my life! It horrifies me to think that the Mirena is still on the market considering the potential it has to cause havoc on other peoples lives as it has mine.

I have Crohn's disease and have been on birth control since before my diagnosis. I use to have flare-ups of the disease every now and then (I was on Mircette). Then last year, I was put on Nortrel and my disease started acting WAY up. I was put on the NuvaRing two months ago and I am having even more flare-ups now. Is there anyone who has a digestive disease and have had their symptoms worsen with the NuvaRing?

I had the Mirena coil removed a week and a half ago and let me tell you I have had the worst week ever!!
My reasons for getting it removed were the same as most people, very bad mood swings, always snapping at my boyfriend, depression, always bleeding, severe stomach cramps all the time, anxiety, hair loss, low libido and the list goes on... I never had any of this before the mirena.. I never realised the mirena could of been the cause until I decided to google it one day and found thousands of women had the same symptoms, everything then made sense...
I made the appointment to get it removed and immediately started taking Vit B6, Primrose oil and I have ordered 5HTP on the internet cos I cant find it anywhere... day 4 I started getting very bad anxiety and horrible suicidal thoughts, I have always been a happy person and couldnt understand what was happening to me... the whole week at work was a blur and each day was a struggle to get through.. I was continuously crying and I had these horrible thoughts in my mind that wouldnt go away!! it has been a nightmare.. its like they are stuck in my mind and I cant think of anything else but these horrible thoughts! (The weird thing is I had the same thoughts when I had the mirena inserted 2.5 years ago but they werent as bad as now and they eventually went away) I saw my doctor on Thursday morning and explained these problems and she prescribed me valium tablets to take away the anxiety... later that afternoon I had a anxiety attack and landed going back to the doctor because of these horrible suicidal thoughts in my mind... My doctor reffered me to a phyciatrist which I saw yesterday, I have never had to see anyone like this before so it was very scary for me... the shrink I saw said that there was no ways the mirena could be doing this to me.... she gave me more valium for my anxiety and now I have to see a special therapist once a week until these thoughts are cleared from my mind!
I find it very strange that all this started 4 days after my mirena was removed! I know this is all happening because of the mirena, the only thing that is keeping me going is reading everyones posts and knowing that this will go way once my hormones settle, I know im not going crazy even though it feels like I am!!
Every doctor I have spoken to will not agree that the mirena could cause any of these side effects! It makes me so mad that so many women are going through this and the doctors think the Mirena is the best thing since slice bread! How can they have no idea!!??
If anyone is thinking of getting the mirena.. DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a 45 year old woman. I have had the Mirena IUD twice. The first time for 2 years, and this past time for 1 1/2 years. After about 6 months on it, each time, I started developing low progesterone symptoms - scalp hair falling out, skin that is dry that looks like it is aging prematurely, drastic drop in libido, mood swings, night sweats, and other. Without any scientific evidence, I feel that my body shut down progesterone production, each time, because of the synthetic progesterone the Mirena dispersed. When I had it taken out the first time, I immediately gained 4 pounds because I had even lower progesterone. I now take Vitex which is supposed to help the body boost progesterone production if it is low. That helped for about 9 months after insertion of the last Mirena. But then the side effects began again. So I started taking wild yam root, sarsaparilla, and yarrow flowers. This has temporarily stopped the hair loss and night sweats, but my libido, mood swings, and the dry/aging skin is still there. I can't get pregnant again, because I have an extreme bleeding problem when I miscarriage. So I am having it removed in May and going for a tubal ligation. I know I will have to supplement myself for a time after the Mirena is removed, because my body will need a gradual shift from the synthetic progesterone to producing on it's own.

I used Yasmin for almost 3 years between 2004 - 2007. I loved it....my periods were regular, I had little acne, and I hardly had any PMS. Then I got pregnant (after stopping the Yasmin!) with twins and delivered them in late November 2007. I was so happy to know that I just knew which type of birth control I wanted to use, I had a great experience while on Yasmin so of course I would go back to it!
BAD IDEA! 4 weeks after the babies were born I started the pills. Mind you, I had a great pregnancy and lots of help at home...no post-partum or baby blues here. I started the pills on 12/23/07 and by 12/25/07 (Christmas Day) I was feeling majorally depressed, having emotional outbursts, having irrational thoughts....I felt alone and as if no one cared about me. I secluded myself and had suicidal thoughts. I thought about leaving my family and living in a hotel. I would get so mad at the littlest things....I almost threw a chair at my husband and tried to punch a hole in the wall. I cussed family members out. I was so irrational. I felt like a crazy, psychotic woman and all in less than a week. This was NOT me.
I quit the pill after the first week, realizing that this pill was causing all these side-effects. I called my OB and spoke with the nurse who told me what I was experiencing couldn't be from the Yasmin - those weren't common side-effects. I told her that I was 1 day Yasmin free and felt like a completely different person...I was myself again. She tried to tell me that maybe I was experiencing post-partum depression and I decided then to just make an appointment to talk to my OB (about Yasmin & his nurse!).
I have an appointment next week and am curious as to what he will say. I know it was the Yasmin and I am glad that I found this website & that I am not alone!

Im 22 yrs. old and have two little boys. My husband says he hopes to one day have a girl so i figured 5 years should be enough time to decide. I got the Mirena last year and the only side effect i had was hair loss,BUT i'm not quite sure if it was the mirena or from just having another baby. But other than that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I have been reading all these reviews and they were almost all negative I was wondering if something was wrong with me. Since I got the Mirena last year I lost weight, no more cramps, lightened periods, and a better sex drive(probably cause I don't have to worry if im going to get pregnant, I feel safe). So would I recommended the Mirena , YES but it clearly seems that every woman's body is different so it might be great for one person and not so great for the other.
