i have just been reading this site and god am i glad, i took Yasmin for two months and came off as my boyfriend said i was being really nasty, i was also suffering with side affects. But i spoke to the doctor and they said to try and last it out as i have skin problems and she said it would help, so i continued to take it. But within one week in taking it side effects seem worse!! I have now two days left and decided not to finish the pack. The side affects are scary i thought there was something wrong with me . They include ...
* Moodiness*no energy*Pale*tired*muscle pain in legs, arms, hands, neck and the bottom of my back*Very sore tender breasts*no sex drive*thrush & dryness*needing to wee more often*Strange heart beats*itching more often everywhere!!
And there are probably more, im just hoping i loose all the side affects as quickly as possible.

my mirena experience was a nightmare to say the least. i had it inserted about 1.5 years ago and finally had it removed last week. the insertion itself was a nightmare. i passed out. i had horrid pain but then was fine within a day or two. the following week, i near passed out. then, i felt lightheaded for about 6 weeks and was convinced it was mirena. i went for my followup. I was feeling better so i decided to keep going.

in the "getting used" to period i had very painful breasts. eventually i had a painful breast lump that stuck around for a few months. off to the doctor for mammogram and ultrasound. they found it was not the bad kind of lump. it cleared up in a couple months.

about 4 months after insertion, i had a couple of near passing out incidents. off to the doctor again - this time for EKG, echo cardiogram, holter monitor. all normal. they suggested i had either panic attacks or vasovagal syndrome.

i also found that i was extremely alcohol sensitive. one drink was a huge problem for me! (in retrospect, i believe the near passing out and alcohol sensitivity were due to becoming hypoglycemic. it turns out progesterone is tightly coupled to insulin response! who knew!).

my next problem was cystic acne. this is really bad acne that goes deep in the skin and is impossible to get rid of (never had that before!). so i was off to the dermatologist.

oh and did i mention that all this passing out ended up giving me terrible anxiety? so now off to the shrink.

overall, it has been 1 year of a near constant feeling of lightheadedness, numerous near passing out / vasovagal type of episodes (probably due to low blood sugar), anxiety about passing out, throbbing head feeling (which i just realized is a migraine), unable to sleep through the night, mid cycle cyst pain, terribly tender breasts just before my period, did i miss anything?

now, let me mention that all the doctors to whom i mentioned that maybe mirena is the cause of my problems said "nah, that is not it." i also mentioned blood sugar and no one bought that either - "nah, you are too physically fit, eat too healthfully, and your blood test from last year is normal."

finally, the psych nurse believed me. she said to get the mirena removed since it appeared all my problems started after the insertion. if it was psychological or if it was physical didn't matter. just get it out!

i've had it out about 6 days now and i would say i feel 70% better. the throbbing head sensation at night is gone and i am sleeping much better. the lightheadedness is improved. i feel much less hungry than i did on mirena so i can only guess my hypoglycemia is improving.

only time will tell if my problems were caused by mirena!

Wow - I can't believe I didn't stumble across this website when I was researching Mirena. I got mine in April 09 and have had a lot of random things going on that I never put it all together that it could be the Mirena. Today, I took TWO pregnancy tests - tender breasts, swollen vag, face breaking out, achy stomach and back, specific stomach weight gain - it HAD to be pregnancy!

My girlfriend told me she was going insane w/ the same thoughts until she started reading stories of other peoples issues. Now, I'm reading all of your stories and just shaking in disbelief...

Weight gain - check.
Sore back/lower abs - check.
Slight odor - check
Terrible PMS symptoms but NO period - check
Zero sex drive - check.
Hair loss - check.
Wild mood swings - check.

The list goes on and on, it's madness! Since day one it has felt "weird" when I go to the bathroom, I just chalked it up to me thinking too much about it being in there.

I'm 32 with one young child and would prefer not to have another. I'm calling my Dr. tomorrow to discuss my options. Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences.

Will I am 28 yrs old and was prescribed loestrin 24fe two months ago. I'm on my second pack as as we speak things are not good. Previously, I took orthotricyclen low for a few years with no problems. About a year ago I changed doctors and was them prescribed femcon; only took that for 2 months so. My doctor now decided to prescribe me loestrin 24 and every experience has been horrible. I've read the post as well as spoken with several friends that was taking the bcp but stopped because of the mood swings and spotting in between periods. During the first month I experience severe mood swings and was spotting after the second week of the pills; this has never happened with any other bcp in the past. My cycle actually lasted more than 3 days and was still on when I started the second pack. I'm currently on the second row and started spotting and clotting 3 days ago. I'm also experiencing bad cramping. I'm trying to wait it out and see if the third month would be better but I might just have to stop. My next visit with my doctor is in October and I'm going to ask for something else.

I got the Mirena inserted when I was 19, had no children, but had had awful experiences on the Pill... I had tried a number of Pills, including Yasmin (became depressed and moody), Loette (spotting), Levlen ED (Crazy moods and insanely tender breasts)... etc etc.
When I am not on the Pill I am a fun loving, easy going girl with my head-screwed on, but when on the Pill I become so unreasonable and emotional.
After having Mirena inserted (so painful as I hadn't had children), I had bleeding for 3 months, cramping and bloating etc... BUT - I felt WONDERFUL for the 4 years following. NO moods, no cramps, my periods stopped completely after about 6 months, no other side effects at all.
I had to have it removed recently as I developed an Ovarian Cyst the size of a lemon and got a UTI that developed into pelvic inflammation.
I had a month with no hormonal contraception, then tried the NuvaRing (Moody and incredibly sore breasts), had another month off contraception and now im trying Yaz. It is indicated for PMDD, but I feel crazy, emotional, irrational and unreasonable on it.
I have no idea where to go from here. Mirena really suited me, but I cant have another one inserted because iv had the Inflammation. I cant stay on the Pill... I hate myself, I am a different person on the Pill.

hi everyone I have been on Yasmin since May 24th 2009 the thing that attracted me was that I could not have my period for the summer and swim and wear white anytime and not worry about it! as I have extremely heavy periods! now we are into July and it has been fine up until now but I just started break through bleeding and I have had very bad headaches the last three days when I wake up and when I go to sleep as well as very tender breasts and the other day at work all I did was cry all morning I just wanted to end my life. I also have had very bad cramps as if I was coming on my period but I knew I was not as I was on Yasmin. After entering all my symptoms in I discovered this site and now I know what is going on. as much as I hate my period I also don't want to die so I am stopping the pill today. Don't rick playing with mother nature it is not worth it!!!

I cannot contribute - in the same way as other posters, I can add a side effect of getting of all birth control pills-- health. The pill seems to act by mimicking the first trimester symptoms of pregnancy in many ways - explains many of the symptoms. Can you imagine being 1st trimester-pregnant for years? I cannot understand why women will use un-natural, non-organic foreign substances in their bodies with possibly deadly side effects - yet swear by organic soy milk, veggies what have you -seems a bit schizophrenic. Better to wait for the man who would love you fully and not ask you to hurt yourself so he can use you for sex. We become just like the men here, this is so sad to me. Instead of being "liberated" we, (not the men) become slave to the pill. And then we don't get he freedom or the man. Try organic sex, in the ways God intended, much healthier.

I have had the Mirena since Feb. of 2007. I still have heavy periods that last approx. 10-12 days and my cycle is every 26 days. I do have the bloating and extreme fatigue as well as the "lazy" feelings. I have no cramping, no back pain, or headache. It was a piece of cake to have inserted...it was done during my 6 week post partum pap smear and it was painless. While it sucks to have my period for ½ the month (which does nothing for the sex life) and it sucks to be bloated and feel tired, and it sucks when we DO have sex that we can both feel it for the first 30 seconds or so, AND it sucks that I can't wear a tampon with it...I'd much rather have this than have to take a pill (I'm not a good pill taker) and it does prevent pregnancy, and it doesn't have NEAR the side effects of estrogen based BCP's. That being said...I am almost 42 years old with a 3 yr old and an 18 month old and that in itself makes me extremely tired. Also, to bond...I didn't think they would put the Mirena in someone who had never had children??? At any rate...I have really had no problems with it, but I am considering having my husband get a vasectomy so I can get this out of me and maybe the fatigue will leave, and hopefully the periods will get shorter and less heavy. I am also considering an endometrial ablation as well...but knowing my luck, I'll probably still have periods considering I'm in the 10% of Mirena users who still have a period after a year of use. Girls, you just have to accept the fact that we are women with crummy hormones that will give us headaches, and hot flashes, and back aches, and acne, and cramps, and bloatedness, and tender breasts, and a myriad of other symptoms for our entires lives. It's just the way God made us.

I have had mine since oct 06, I immediately started to have unusual discharge, so much that I have to wear panty liners or a lite tampon, It's extremely embarrassing to have to go through with it everyday, especially in the summer, when i wanna wear a bathing suit. I also hate to have sex, it hurts so much, I can barely take it. I have been oody and miserable, around the time I do get my period I have very tender breasts. My period is lite and only lasts a few days, so no complaint there. I have enlarged cysts now, and they also contribute to my pain during sex. I have no sex drive whatsoever. Could care less. And I use to have sex on a regular basis.

For the past year I have been struggling with acne, I have never had pimples in my life, so now having the right side of my face full of acne and nothing, nothing will treat it. I didn't have much weight gain at all. Im back to my regular size, but I do workout now, and haven't lost anything either.

I thought for the past 3 years I've been crazy, Im depressed, but nothing to be depressed about, I dont have a stressful job, Im healthy, taken care of. But I can cry over nothing, literally, I cry everyday, and lately its getting worse, I thought I was pregnant, because I felt so emotional, I was feeling flutters in my stomach. Things that I felt the first itme.

I don't have insurance, and make to much to get medicare. I really want to get it taken out. This has affected my life so much, that its ruining my relationship with my boyfriend.

I cant believe how many others are having same symptoms, I should have looked into this a long long time ago. Hopefully I can have planned parenthood take it out.

Actually, I had been taking YASMIN for over a year with NO problems. I was on every other pill known to man, but suffered from Acne sooooo, MD put me on YASMIN and skin was clear with no bad side effects. Recently, my MD put me on YAZ and, now, I'm having bowel issues (hospital twice), migraines, cramps in my legs at night, bloating and acne coming back. YAZ sucks! I'm tired all the time and feel depressed, too. This is all new to me so I'm going to ask to switch back to YASMIN!

I have had the Mirena for about 2 1/2 years. I had it inserted about 3 months after I had my daughter. Initially I thought it was great, but in the past 12-18 months I have noticed so many negative side effects that I believe must be related to the hormones in the Mirena. My PCP ignored my complaints but I have experienced the following since having the Mirena inserted:
sore/tender breasts, pretty serious weight gain(I diet and exercise a lot and don't lose a pound), severe acne on the chin and jaw line, coarse/dark facial hairs on the jaw line, migraines in the right side of my head, lower back pain in the left side(almost like a sciatica) fatigue. low sex drive, some mood swings, and the expected spotting. Although my PCP dismisses my concerns I have made an appt. with a new gynecologist to discuss my concerns and possible removal of the Mirena. Although the prevention of pregnancy is great the side effects are becoming unbearable and seem to increase over time. I would think twice about opting for this method of birth control.

I have had mine in for about 2 months and now im getting every side effect under the sun. I feel like going through every aspect of pregnancy all at that the same time. The weight gain, sickness, tender breasts, dizziness, depression, everyone hates me, tired all the time, no sex drive, and pain EVERYWHERE, on top of all that know feel like i have the flu and getting motion sickness. I have called my doc and i pushed them to see me Monday to get this damn thing out. I rather have the bad cramps around my period than this.

I had my Mirena in for 20 months. I had it removed as i realized that it was causing many side effects including headaches, painful feet when i got up in the morning, bloated stomach and fat rolls! WEIGHT GAIN of 6kg or 13 pounds and i could not get it off (usually i can drop a kilo or two if i needed by eating smaller portions and no snacks), foggy brain, very tired and exhausted for no reason, lower back aches, tender breasts, no period whatsoever (not a bad thing), NO libido and possibly more - a doctor suggested he possibly suspected depression. After i had it removed, i bled for several days then nothing then a few days again. It has been 5 weeks since its removal and i have already lost 3kg or 6.5 pounds, and i have not felt tired unusually at all. All my other symptoms have pretty much disappeared overnight and i feel myself happy, exuberant self again. HIGHLY recommend removing your Mirena if you are feeling symptoms like mine. Condoms girls is all i can say, don't mess with your finely balanced hormone levels. Also i researched a natural product you might be interested in to regain natural hormone balance, Maca Root. Ask a naturopath at a health food store for more info. Stop searching for answers like i was doing, and do what you think is right for you and your body.

For me, mostly, Yaz has been heaven sent. I had a horrible case of PMDD and it is much more manageable now. My only complaint is that after 15 months of being on Yaz, I have been bleeding now for 17 days with no end in sight. This bleeding started mid-pack and is much more severe within a couple of hours of taking a pill. Anyone else experience this?

I had my Mirena for a little over a year. I started getting really bad acne approx. 4-5 months ago. I believe it was due to the hormones in the Mirena. I saw a dermatologist and she said that the hormone can make you more androgenic thus causing acne. I had my Mirena removed about 1 week ago and I am having really bad mood swings, loss of sex drive, tender breasts, and headaches. I also had a problem that started with my wrist back in December. Has anyone else had wrist pain or any joint pain?

i had my mirena removed after 1 yr and 3 months. I had several problems. I had constipation, blurred vision, tender breasts, I had dull aches from my waist to my knees every day for the last 6 months also severe shedding oh and don't forget the awful acne. Im 36 come on your not suppose to break out with huge boils @ that age! Oh my obgyn tried her best to tell me its not the damn mirena I mean get real as soon as it came out i stood to get dressed and it was instant no pains. I couldn't believe it! I don't care what anyone says. I believe it was a bad option for me some ppl don't have problems with it but im telling you that thing was not agreeing with my body. I would rather take my chances hell I wasn't having sex often with that thing I was either too tired or I was in some kind of pain! All I can say day one with out it has been GREAT!!!!!!!!! So if your thinking about having it removed do it don't let the doc change your mind you know your body way better than they do.

Has anyone out there who has been on lisinopril gotten very sore tender breasts? I recently increased the dose from 10mg. to 15 mg. because my BP was getting higher and it seems like I've had this stinging aching sensation in my breasts since then? I've also had a tickling cough since I've been on it--worse at night.

I'm 42, I had the Mirena coil fitted February 2008, due to 'disfunctional bleeding.' Although it has stopped the constant bleeding, I suffer from terrible joint pain, which I never did before, especially my hips, knees and ankles. Weight gain, which in turn is making me miserable, lots of vaginal infections, itchy and tender breasts, along with palpitations.....I think I'd rather live with the 'disfunctional bleeding!'

I'm entering into my third pack of Loestrin 24 Fe. I had an IUD for 5 years, was to have it replaced on 12/29/08 but could not take the extreme pain when inserting so didn't do it. Don't know why it was so unbearably painful this time vs. 5 years ago. Anyway, doctor gave me 6 free samples of Loestrin 24 Fe. At first I had no problem, no need to use back up method because medicine from IUD was still in my system so transition was a breeze. First month on Loestrin, I bled for 2 days but so light that it wasn't even noticeable, second month didn't bleed at all, now I'm half way through my third pack. The mood swings are unbearable. I am now suffering from diarrhea and stomach cramps that are so painful I find myself in a ball on the bathroom floor moaning in pain as well as nausea. Although the lack of period was nice the strain of wondering if I'm pregnant is just too stressful.

I personally don't recommend Loestrin 24 to anyone unless of course you like monthly guessing of whether or not your pregnant, sever mood swings, diarrhea and stomach cramps so painful you would give your left arm for it to go away.

Since I don't want to get pregnant nor risk any chances of getting pregnant, I am suffering through this last pack and will go on another type of birth control. I plan on having my tubes tied this summer.

I don't recommend this pill to anyone. One more side effect, tender breasts so severe that it hurts to wear a bra and not wear a bra, I can't win.

For those skeptics, no I'm not pregnant and no I don't have a stomach bug, it is all from this pill.

I had Mirena placed in July '08 after the birth of my 3rd child. My husband and I thought it was a good idea since I was returning to school to get my Masters. The experience having it put in was one of the most horrible yet funny ones in my 32 years for a number of reasons, but that is another whole story! I haven't had my period even once since having the IUD inserted. Yay for me--or so I thought. I have been attributing a lot of the side effects I have to the stress of being a full-time mom of 3, a wife, and a student who lives away from her family during the week and traveling home on the weekends. I'm sure the fatigue I feel has a little bit to do with all of that, however, I have been able to handle less sleep than most for my whole life! This extreme fatigue I feel every day is worse than the fatigue I had when I was pregnant and a full-time nurse in a very busy ICU and traveling nearly 150 miles to and from work daily! I constantly feel as if I have menstrual cramps, but never get a period, I have extremely tender breasts day after day, headaches, and frequent diarrhea that I never experienced prior to having Mirena placed. I've been a little nervous about the fact that I have absolutely NO sex drive either--this is not usually the case--I love the intimacy that my husband and I used to share. How frustrating for him, and me, as well! I didn't realize that there are so many issues with Mirena until recently! My sister also has one and has some extremely strange things going on ever since placement of it. My husband and I recently decided that we would like to try to add one more child to our family, and I plan to make an appointment to have Mirena removed as soon as my schedule allows. Even without having made this decision, knowing what I know now, I would do the same thing. I am also going to encourage my sister to have hers removed as well. When she started having the symptoms she is having, we suspected Mirena, but her doctor basically told her she was nuts! Bye bye Mirena for this chicky! I have too much of my life to live to have this little nuisance hanging around!

Ortho Tricyclen Lo is the WORST! I've been on it for about 4-5 months now and it has changed my personality to the exact opposite of who I am! It has made me SEVERELY depressed, mood swings are off the chart, almost ruined my relationship because of how negative and sad it made me. No sex drive whatsoever! This is a very bad pill, I don't even know why it's on the market.
My doctors just prescribed me Estrostep Fe, I have good expectations with this one. So long as I get my sex drive back (going from having sex almost every other day, to maybe once or twice a week thanks to Ortho) and my bubbly happy personality back, I'm happy.
I don't care if I have tender breasts...I just want my sex drive back!!!

DOWN WITH ORTHO!

I am sure like anything else (like pregnancy) some are lucky, some are not. After reading this, I cant say i consider myself super unlucky! But, I have had Mirena in for almost 2 years, and have an appt. to have it out in 3 days...

I basically feel pregnant. Never have periods any longer, horrible cramping though I never had PMS, now have ovarian cysts on both sides, very tender breasts, smells make me sick, very picky about what I feel like eating or not and very tired. The lower back cramps get so bad they make me feel sick. I go through periods of random and constant spotting, then nothing. It is very disruptive in our sex life, though another problem I don't seem to have is diminished sex drive (but, pain, spotting etc has affected it).

I cant say I have had weight gain, though I am very active so that helps. But, I can say my body has changed - my breasts are larger though my body fat % is under 15, and my jeans feel much tighter in the hips and butt with no real weight gain. I feel like I have been moody as well, and almost felt depressed, but had some real stress so I didn't attribute that to Mirena.

The first six months was crap (discharge, cramps, spotting, irregular or no periods), but I really felt like it may take time. I hadn't had kids, so yes, for me it hurt very much getting it in, and I have a pretty high pain tolerance, though I am sure it varies for everyone.

I guess it is one of those things, maybe too good to be true. I am glad I tried it, because I do love the idea of it but I am done! Kind of is weird that they don't know 100% of how it works, different for everyone but I can tell you that until I got the cysts, I def. felt like I still ovulated.

The pain was so bad getting it in, I am nervous about getting it out! The "thread" or whatever is no longer beneath the cervix, though the sonos I had for the cysts show the placement is fine...if anyone has gone through this, let me know!

it comes dwn to what others say - if this seems to be the best alternative for you, try it, give it a bit of time, but LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. I wish I had it out months ago...

I have been taking Vagifem 25 mcg for about 3 months (about every other night or 3 times per week). I am starting to have chest pains. It feels like what might be angina, though I have never had chest pains in my life before. The drug information enclosed with the prescription does say that chest pain can be a rare but serious side effect. Anyone else had this side effect?

I am so incredibly nervous that I am pregnant. I recently lost a baby at 27 weeks and am not ready for another baby. I have been on Loestrin 24 Fe for six weeks. The first month I had a few side effects. The past week has been horrible. I have had cramps, spotting, discharge, and tender breasts. I took a pregnancy test a week ago and it came out negative. These symptoms started only three days after intercourse, so that is far too early to experience pregnancy symptoms, but I just don't want to worry about this. I am tired of not feeling well physically and emotionally and would like to sleep.
