I started off taking Tenormin 50 mg 1 x a day and Lanoxin 25 mg 1 x a day about 21 years ago. I continued to have constant palps and skipped beats even though I was on these meds. I wound up developing vertigo after about 5 years that got so bad I had it daily. I ended up with severe sinus problems and was given a cortisone packet of pills (the kind that decrease each day you take them) to take. The vertigo left for 6 months, coming back again with a vengeance. I begged the docs to put me back on cortisone pills again, once more helping to stop the vertigo. However, at the same time I also stopped the Lanoxin. ??? I totally believe that Lanoxin was part of the problem causing the vertigo. I now only have it from time to time, maybe only a few times a year. I still blame the Toprol that I now take for the left-over vertigo. I was taken off of the Tenormin after about 10 years of taking it and put on the Toprol at that time and have been on the Toprol xl for the last 11 years. The docs said that I needed to be on Toprol XL, as it was an extended release and would help me much more around the clock. I did not notice much difference throughout the switch, but looking back I do believe that a lot of the things that I have been dealing with through the years are side-effects of the medicines. I have had irritable bowel syndrome, told I have fybromyalgia, then told I did not have fybromyalgia, hip and back pain, skin problems on one of my hands that started with the Toprol, headaches, tiredness, horrible weight-gain (without overeating!! Honestly.), I have averaged 5 lbs. a year and the docs never even listen to me when I voice my concerns, I have been diagnosed with anxiety, joints ache, ankels, feet, face and hands swell, stomach bloats something terrible, acid reflux, hiatial hernia, and I had a tumor removed that could have been a problem off my rectum (who knows what caused it), I have had CTs and MRIs of my head, twice, for the vertigo and what I was told was probably psuedo-tumor cerbri (because of months of severe headaches), told by my eye doctor that he wonders if I have beginning MS, everything came back fine and things seem to resolve and go into something else. I have been passed from my general physician, to a cardiologist, to a ENT, and a neurologist. No one can ever find anything physically wrong, but they did conclude that I definitely had benign positional vertigo. LOL, that means they could not tell me why I had it. I put a stop to testing when they wanted to do the spinal taps.

Now I am experiencing tightness around my lower rib-cage and feel as though I am sucking for breath, I have a terrible time falling asleep at night, I wake up gasping and swearing that I am dying. My rib-cage is numb around my right side, not so much the left side when I lay down to go to sleep at night. After a few bouts of this I finally fall asleep and sleep all night most times. My blood pressure is now on the rise 150/99 at the highest. I have been working out lately with a few positive effects, more energy, more endurance, less aches and pains, muscles are starting to tone up, however, no weight loss. I thought my bp was starting to lower, but found out it was actually up. I went to my family doc and she listened to me really good, realized at last that I was not shedding the weight despite the efforts I was making. She cut my toprol to 25 mg 1 x a day and put me on lisinopril, I did not tolerate the lisinopril so she switched me to dyazide, lowest dose 1 x a day. I have great positives ...no more swelling, weight loss, lower bp, HOWEVER, I am now having jitters, anxiety (somewhat), no appetite at all, a few muscle spasms in my arms and legs, nothing painful or severe, dizziness, slight headache that comes and goes especially through my eyes. I am also experiencing coughing, and raspiness...but I am also coming out of a bout of bronchitis, which got really bad with the lisinopril. I believe it is partly due to the meds.

I called my doc today to tell her about the twitching and buzzing feeling and to ask about the dyazide. My feelings are that I am experiencing a lot of different things, first the bronchitis, and all the meds I was taking for that...albuterol, musinex, tylenol w/codeine, and biaxin, then the decrease of my toprol xl, the bad effects of lisinopril (coughing and raspiness), and now starting the new drug dyazide (generic form). I really want this to all settle down and work out for the best, but it is getting to me now (after 2 weeks). Last Saturday I would up in the ER with shooting pains through my chest that left me very pale and lightheaded when it happened as well as very tight throug my chest and sucking for air. The ER did chest xray, chest CT w/contrast, bloodtests, urine test, bp's sitting, standing and lying down (it is highest while sitting), everything came back good. No heart attacks, no blood clots, no bronchitis anymore, nothing. Blood work was good, urine was good. I am beginning to think that perhaps my body is reacting to cutting the Toprol xl in half. Sort of a withdrawal. There is really nothing else it can be and I really don't think that the dyazide is that bad of a drug and probably not causing all of my problems now, maybe just a part. Which are the tingling, dizziness, anxiety, twitching, and coughing. I have only had 3 of the dyazide medication. But have read that withdrawal symptoms of Toprol can cause these problems for a while. I am also thinking that the shooting chest pains last week were also withdrawal of the Toprol as it had been 1 week at that point that it had been cut in half.

Any opinions, if anyone can make heads or tails of anything that I have wrote. Sorry for the length and if it is confusing.

I began taking Atenolol/Tenormin for about 3 months now for Mitral Valve Prolapse. At first I believed it was working at indeed felt a lot better. Up until about 2 to 3 weeks ago I have experienced SWOLLEN ANKLES, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, EXTREME TIREDNESS, SORE MUSCLES, LACK OF ENTHUSIASM. If you are currently taking this, stop now. It is just a downward spiral. I recommend daily walking, healthy diet, and lots of water. My mother did this when she was diagnosed and stopped taking the drugs and it worked wonders.

I used to take Atenolol and had side effects. Unfortunately, all doctors know is to push drugs, instead alternatives. I am taking a natural product now with no side effects.

Lipitor 20mg
*Muscle deterioration:*
I had to stop taking walks.
*Diarrhea:*
I am sorry to tell my doctor doesn't know how to treat me.
He raised Tenormin to 50 mg a day, and it made a catastrophy. Severe electrical heart problem. Very debilitating. Permanent chest pain. I acted: I reduced it to a minimal level of 12.5 mg a day.
I have stopped Lipitor 20 mg and replaced it with.

Nattokinase
CoQ10 (Ubiquinol)
Cucurma
Lecithin
Omega 3
Magnesium supplements
Very effective!
Above is from science. Lipitor is from business.

Now, all angina symptoms are gone. No more arythmia.
I have also dropped one aspirin a day, and replaced it with Allicin. (Concentred garlic)
I have learn that aspirin is doing the opposite of the expected effect for 40% of people. It is causing a sever eye pathology, macular degeneration, and stomach bleeding. And after many months it has no beneficial effects, only adverse effects.
Garlic has so many positive side effects.

Have any females suffered from decreased sexual desire with this med? I have had the cough, weakness, dizziness, sore throat, runny nose, numbness and tingling in my hands, weakness in lifting with my arms, coughing, and catch my breath a lot. I thought it was just "getting used to the med". I am convinced this is a dangerous med, I am off it for good.

50 yr old female ( gasps @ 5-0 still)

I've been on ToprolXL for some time now. I started with Tenormin and felt FINE! The doctor then decided it was not the 'right medicine' for me and changed me to a 'new and better medication' names TOPROL XL, He started me on 50mg a day. I had experienced rapid heart beat of at least 150 bpm up to 200! My heart had to be stopped in the ER to get it back to being a normal rhythm. At the time I was 39 yrs old :( SCARY! I had every test imagined. Heart tests, lung and leg scans. You name it, I had it done to me ( thankfully, to make sure it was nothing serious). Although I do consider a heart beating that high to be serious! I already have a anxiety disorder, I noticed that my panic attacks are worse now more than ever! I am very very lethargic. Just thinking about doing ANYTHING makes me tired. I even getting tired when I talk too much! My mouth is always excessively dry. I put on weight and even paid for a diet that consisted of 2 'shakes' and one meal per day. Followed it to the "T"! and nothing ?! I've recently read that ToprolXL can lead to all kinds of diseases. One of them being Lou Gehrig's (ASL) :( I am SO very upset that medication is prescribed supposedly to make a person feel better AND I don't think I've physically felt this depleted and depressed in years! I want medical answers and I need support and words of encouragement from everyone that has been on this drug , most especially those weaned off ot it and are on a better drug. Most of the people I notice taking TOPROL XL are taking it fro HBP or symptoms other then the one's I have. I am SO confused now :(

I have been taking Toprol for about a year for elevated heart rate. It slowed down my heart allright, and my metabolism slowed down with it! I've gained 20 lbs in a year! I joined Weight Watchers 9 weeks ago expecting to lose about 10 lbs by now. I keep a food journal, eat per the program and exercise 5 times a week. I have lost NOTHING. It is very depressing when you do everything that you're supposed to to lose weight and nothing happens. I am going to discuss other alternatives with my physician.

When I first started on 10mg of Lisinoprill, I immediately noticed a weird kind of sore throat. Not like the sore throat you get from a cold or the flu, but rather, the muscles around the adam's apple were sore, and it always hurt to swallow. Also, my BP did not go down very much. And pulse was twice as fast as normal.

So, my dose was doubled. After one day, my throat closed in a violent spasm which scared the hell out of me. After that, my throat really hurt, as though someone had hit me in the throat with a Karate chop. It actually hurts to touch, right below the point of the adam's apple.

And still my BP was dangerously high. I borrowed a Tenormin 100mg and within 30 minutes, my BP and pulse were at texbook normal.

I will never take another lisinopril. I think it is a horrible drug.

I have been taking Toprol for 5 months and have experienced several unpleasant side effets. I have become unusually anxious, am very tired most of the time, my hair is dry and thinning rapidly, I also have difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, and my mind at times is foggy. Prior to Toprol I was taking Tenormin for my atrial fibrillation, but the former seems to be working better. However, with all the above side effects I am very seriously considering ablation or another drug, but definitely not an anti-arrythmic one. The side effects are much worse.

Picked up a prescription for Lisinopril today. 20MG tablets for High Blood pressure. 57 yo male, smoker, beer drinker, chronic bronchitis. (Yeh, I know)
Was on beta blockers before (Tenormin) At night cramps in feet and calf mucles, cough, diareah, lethargic, fatigue, cough and most importantly IMPOTENT, Viagra is not all its cracked up to be.
So, as far as side effects, looks like they about simular, but I sure hope the impotency problem will be solved.
I'll take the stuff stuff tomorrow, but thanks to this site, I'm warned. Thanks to all. I asked my doctor to switch me to an ACE inhibitor. I want a normal sex life back, as I did before the Beta blockers, then I think I can live with some of the side effects.
I'll report back in a month.

I have been on Lisinopril for over 2 weeks now and have had a persistent cough the whole time... I was switched from a Beta-Blocker to this new drug over night. Neither my Doctor or pharmacist said anything about stopping the Beta -Blocker slowly before starting the Lisinopril. I ended up with bp readings of 160/ 100 and a pulse of 100-120. My heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. The Doctor said nothing to me but, "so you decided to quit cold turkey, lucky you didn't end up in the emergency room with heart problems." I think I was better of with Tenormin. I was only taking 50 mgs per day, I think he could have increased that to twice daily. He says my cough will go away, we'll see.
Thanks for listening...

I have been on 2.5 mg of Lisinopril for about 3 months. I have also been on Tenormin 25 mg and 12.5 mg. chlorthalidone for over 20 years with virtually no side effects to those two medications (with the exception of low pulse of under 60 bpm from the Tenormin).
After starting the Lisinopril, I developed a twitch in my right eyelid which is almost constant, a dry cough from hell that persists especially at night, fatigue and a "down" feeling.
I never had the twitch, the cough, dizziness, fatigue or the down feeling prior to the Lisinopril. It did lower my BP from about 140/90 to 125/80 (or lower), but the side effects are terrible.
I have always been sensitive to medications and take only very small amounts of any medications. Because of my past problems with medications, I am very aware of my body and any abnormal side effects. I have tried other BP medications and had side effects. I have a very understanding doctor and have an upcoming dr appointment and will look into change of this medication. I am not an easy candidate for medication.
This is a gret website.
I knew my side effects were from the Lisinopril, but got confirmation here. These forums are very helpful.

Why or why... are all you people being given Lisinopril for high blood pressure? Atenolol (brand name, Tenormin) is as side-effect free as any drug, is specific for high blood pressure, and really lowers it with a very small dosage. There are tons of other similar drugs too. The ACE inhibitors should be used for heart (defect) problems. Mine is. I never heard of using an ACE inhibitor for hbp!!! Has anyone ever looked into this? You're taking massive dosages and getting very little results. What's going on?

I started taking Allegra in Feb and by Mar noticed an itchy part of my scalp then started to lose hair on that spot. The bald spot is now getting bigger so i decided to stop my medication. I have made an appointment to see my doctor. This is a new medication but there may be an interaction with Tenormin that I've been taking.
