My dosage has been 250/50 and I have been using the medication for about 3 years. I have experienced increased mucus, hoarseness, and thrush. I now have the thrush under control by thoroughly rinsing my mouth after using the inhaler. The hoarseness was not caused directly by the Advair, rather it was caused by frequently clearing my throat due to the mucus. My wife is a speech language pathologist and noticed my frequent throat clearing and explained that throat clearing irritates the vocal chords and causes hoarseness. By avoiding harsh throat clearing the hoarseness has gone away. I still have issues with thick mucus but it is minor nuisance compared with the improvements to my breathing.

Update.. well today is the 10th day off of Singulair for my 6yr old son. He is doing wonderful. One of the issues he has been dealing with over last year was constant sinus infections. Just curious if anyone else out there experienced thick mucus/sinus infections. His got to the point that his adenoids became enlarged from constant infections but even after surgery in Feb his sinus did not seem to drain completely. Well yesterday he finally started having discharge of what seems to be a lining in his sinus(what they saw on cat scan before surgery). He has no cold symptons and I have been giving him mucinex & saline washes to help thin it out but I have been doing this along.. I have been waiting for this to happen for months now! I don't feel its coincidence that its after we stopped the Singulair his sinuses are finally draining (without antibiotics)

Two weeks ago my Doctor put me back on Advair 500/50, My voice went hoarse immeditialy (still that way), I also started having headachs, unable to sleep, muscle pain, my blood pressure has increased and I have a rapid heart rate. The problem that drives me crazy is I have difficultly swallowing and I feel like someone is strangling me. I also have a bad cough and thick mucus that doesn't seem to end...not to mention mood swings and problems thinking.
I was previously on advair for years, stopped taking it cause I did not feel right. My Doctor remains firm in her option "advair has no side effects" and thinks I make this up...Wish I never started back on it and stopping using it today.

I took one capsule of this medication at 2:00pm on 12/12/07 and about twenty minutes after taking this medication I began to feel nauseous, than I went and ate something about one hour later just a piece of toast. About ten minutes of eating I began to throw up and started having a headache, so I just kept going not really thinking about it, because the side effect do say headache may occur so I continue my day, about 1 hour and 30 minutes after regurgitating my head was hurting so severely that my eyes was watering and pulse could be heard through my ears, like a drum beating. I then became dizzy and things seemed to get blurred so I laid down and about 10 minutes in laying down my mouth began to fill with thick mucus almost like cotton in my mouth, began to be extremely thirsty so I got up and got water, to throw it back up. I then began to feel my jaw tightening up feeling like I was getting lock jaw. I then called my doctor office and talked to a triage nurse who then called a doctor and called me back and told me not to take any more of the medication and to take 50mg of Beneadryl because of a allergic reaction to the medication, but I am also allergic to PCN and ASA so she said it is rare for people to have an allergic reaction to this medication. Now my symptoms was not over that night I could not sleep, I also had bad dreams, severe night sweats, and nauseous that morning. I started having lower abdominal cramps, and still having problems sleeping, and sometimes I feel like crying and for no reason. Today is 12/20/07 and I still am having severe abdominal cramps, still nauseous in the mornings, no headaches or cotton mouth but the stomach cramps have not yet left and I only took one capsule, today makes a week, tomorrow is my doctor apt. hopefully I can get something to help me out but this is my story about this mess up drug.

I am a 71 year old man with COPD (emphysema) My pulmonologist has prescribed Spiriva and Advair. I have taken Advair for over three years and Spiriva for about 18 months. Lately, I have experience a rapid heart beat (sometimes 138 bpm), problems with hoarseness, thick mucus in the throat, weight gain including an unpleasant, distended belly after eating, leg cramps at night, heartburn, dizziness and slow stream urination. I've been checked for prostate problems, the results of which were normal. My heart has always been healthy but lately with the rapid heartbeat, I've become very concerned. I am going to stop taking the Advair and see what the results are. The Spiriva seems to be doing a good job for me and I will continue with it since it is not a steroid.

I read the email from the woman who had taken Allegra for 5 years and her doctor put her on Singulair. To her I am addressing this, and to anyone else interested. Also to the woman who started kicking stuff out of her way, and tried to move away from herself.
I am Ginger, and I am 58, a retired babysitting granny, and love it. I have allergic rhinitis, and have had frequent sinus infections the last 5 months, even using Nasonex and Astelin and Allegra. My doctor, whom I love and respect, suggested he put me on Singulair and it did help, I was having a drainage so salty it was choking me and at night when I lay down, I would wake up all night with thick mucus choking me. The Singulair did thin the music and I got over the sinus thing with a Z-pack.
I took the Singulair for about 4 weeks, and I ran out and called my doctor last week, and got samples for a few weeks. I am super sensitive to medications, and Vytorin gave me chemically induced hepatitis, which went away when I stopped taking it, and I can't take Calcium, strong antibiotics, anything hardly at all. So I was glad I could take the Singulair.
Okay, I began to notice I had no patience with my husband who is a bad diabetic and in stage 3 of kidney failure. I realized I had known for several years that my husband has anemia from kidney failure, and his blood sugar bottoms out and I call 9-1-1 several times a year when he goes out on me. He is my best friend and my husband of nearly 22 years. When he forgot something and was talking, I would just clam up and make him ask me to tell him, or not tell him. If he got a little short, I used to walk away and not say anything. BUT lately, like the last month, it has gotten worse, to the point we argue over stuff that should never be argued over. It is because I will not let it go, like I used to, because I have no patience.
Okay, I went to internet side effects, and yes, I have been having trouble sleeping, trouble waking up at night and laying there, been on WW and in 4 weeks only lost 6 pounds. I noticed I had some of most of the side effects. I also have had fibromyalgia diagnosed in 1988, so I don't need any more muscle aches.
Okay, I thought the Allegra did not help, so my brother gets the generic CLaratin 300 for $16 at Sam's Wholesale, and I had him get me a bottle, and GOODBYE TO SINGULAIR AND ALLEGRA.
The side effects slipped up on me so subtly it took a while to realize I really did not hate the person driving slow in front of me, and I did not really hate to answer the phone, etc. No More Singulair for me!!! Ginger

I've been on nuvaring for over a year. At first, after having kids, me and my husband decide to wait until we have more. My GYNO recommended NUVARING, I've never used any other birth controlls before, because of the side effects.
The thought of controlling ur own period and its 99.9% safe. We get started.
The first week of having it in, I felt like I was in another person's body. It felt so strange and unusual.
I called her to request something else, she said these side effects will go away after 3 months.
DID I MENTION ITS BEEN OVER A YEAR???? Still waiting for the side effects to go away.
BUT now that I'm reading these effects, I know I;m not crazy after all.
I'm always feeling DEPRESSED, suicidal thoughts.
Trouble sleeping, and when I gets up in the morning, I feel like I'm pregnant with MORNING SICKNESS.
UPPER RESP. INFECTION. (thick mucus off my chest in the mornings, alot of runny nose, flu like symptoms). My doctor prescribe antibiotics.
CRYING for no apparant reason.
SEVERE HEADACHES.
BREAST TENDERNESS.
SENSITIVE TO LIGHTS. My husband do all the driving at nights, just to be on the safe side.
MOOD SWINGS that I just cant control, and blaming my husband for everything. Which cause arguments and searartions.
Discomfort during and burning sensation after sex.
Me and my husband were very sexual, atleast 12 times a week, NOW he'll be very lucky if he gets it twice. This NR definately decrease your sexdrive by 100%.
I have severe cramping and burning sensation/indesgestion in my stomach. My doctor says I have ACID REFLUX, AND prescribe PREVACID.
And the main thing, is the yeast infestion. I'm 25yr and I've never had a burning itch or skin irritations in my groins until I went on NR.
I'm still having vaginal discharge and after removing the ring after having it in for 3weeks, on my fourth week, I have a brownish discharge before my period.
I love the ring, but the side effects are CRAZY and they don't just go away after 3 months, as what people would say. I have an appointment with my GYN to get off NR. I'm just gonna stick to non harmonal contraceptives. Hope it works for you.
The good thing is, it increases my bust size..:-).
Good Luck

I've never been on any formd of birth control before. But after having my 2 kids, Me and my husband decide not to have anymore soon.
My OBGYN recommended nuvaring, I like the fact that u control your own cycle and its 99.9% efeective.
ANYWAYS, its been over a year now since I first started it, and just to let u know, there side effects arent going anywhere.
At first, I hate the way it makes me feel, so I called my GYN. She recommended to use it for 3 months and the side effects will all go away.(My body just need to get use to the harmone).
Well, its been over 3 months and I'm still waiting for the side effects to go away.
I HAD ALMOST ALL THESE SIDE EFFECTS LISTED HERE.
-Crying for no reason
-depression. (suicicidal thoughts)
-having trouble sleeping
-upper Resp. infections (during the mornings when I wake up, I have a severe runny nose, headaches, and I feel like I'm pregnant having morning sickness). I would also cough up alot of THICK MUCUS off my chest.

I experienced large red blotches on both sides of my face. Also, as I read some of these emails, I realize that the thick mucus in the back of my throat could be directly from the advair. I'm really not sure I want to continue taking this med.

I have been on advair for about 3 years. My two biggest problems are weight gain...lots! And the constant thick mucus in the back of my throat and in my lungs. I have never cleared my throat so much in my life. Even when I was just on singulair. Yes, my asthma is really under control, but at what future cost? I understand that having asthma attacks can damage lung function for sometimes as much as a year, if the attack is bad enough, but I am tired of how I look and my constant throat clearing and coughing. My father is also on Advair for his asthma, and he is the same way.

Advair x 3 months. Originally started for asthma- new diagnosis. I have had a respiratory illness with:
constant cough,
thick mucus,
sore/hoarse throat
and night sweats.
all of this for the past 7 weeks ("It's a virus"). Also, that lovely puffy belly with weight gain. I am posting this at 1210 am; I'm having an even worse time than usual sleeping. I will start the taper tomorrow.
Thank you all for posting.

I was given Guaifenex for thick mucus in my sinus, but after a week on Guaifenex I ended up at my asthma doctor, and was told it wasn't my asthme, I needed to go back to the sinus doctor. I was having a hard time breathing, felt like something was sitting on my chest, bad cough, and more headaches. After reading these posting, I am off this med as of tonight. Thaks

I'm now 43, and I've had bad allergy symptoms since about age 17. Perennial symptoms and nearly daily headaches and facial pressure and bad throat drainage. Also, every time I got a cold, I'd get a cough that would not go away for months.
Finally, a few years ago, a new family doctor suggested I try Advair for that cough. Wow. Cough gone in days. Wow. That seemed invaluable to me.
But, I do notice thick mucus in my throat now, and I can't seem to clear it, at times. My voice is affected and diminished, it seems.
I'm not sure that any other side effects are occurring for me. However, after my wife saw a commercial about death risks associated with Advair(naturally the commercial was from a law firm), I decided to do some internet reading. I am curious about the possible heart effects. I had a mitro-valve prolapse in my teens, and am not sure I should be taking medications that can alter your heart rhythms.
I think I'll call my doctor and see what other options I have. I am intrigued by the idea I read below, from April of 2008, about reducing dosage to once a day, or every other day, or once a week, or down from 250 to 100, or all of the above. If it still controls my cough, that's may be all I need.
I've never had bad asthma. Just bad allergies, that have led me to this.
