I've had my Mirena for about 2 1/2 years. I've tried other forms of b.c. such as several versions of the pill, the patch, the ring, the depo shot, etc. Mirena has been the best choice for me by far. I am having it removed in the next month though not because of any dissatisfaction with it; my husband and I are ready to have our third child. Initially it did cause some severe uterine cramping; however, once that subsided it was fabulous. My periods are gone and I don't have to worry about keeping up with have I or haven't taken my b.c. There seem to be many women who have experienced severe side effects from Mirena. Just remember if it doesn't work for you there are many options out there. Once I have my third child, I will not get Mirena again. I want a more permanent solution, i.e. sterilization. Good luck to all in your quest for finding a b.c. that works for you!

I am 25 years old. I had my Mirena put in in February of 2008 after my daughter was born. This was my third child and I chose this birth control because I was told it was the best choice aside from having my tubes tied which I wasn't ready to do. I have had it a little over a year and half now and had quit having a period. About 2 1/2 months ago I had a very heavy period that lasted about 3 weeks. When it quit I thought it was just my body trying to tell me it needed flushed out. Well a week later I had another 2 week long period. I made an appointment with my doctor and they couldn't find the IUD. They said it had shifted so they ordered an ultrasound to locate it. I am still waiting on those results but am most likely going to have it taken out regardless. I didn't have a single problem with it until recently. My husband and I are thinking about having another baby and I am not going back on this medicine after we do. I will get my tubes tied because I am not dealing with this again. My dr said that if the IUD isn't the cause of the bleeding it is something else and most likely the IUD caused that problem as well. Thank goodness I found this site because I thought I was the only one having this problem as well. Good luck to all and I will update as soon as I hear about the location and results of the ultrasound.

I had the Mirena inserted about 2 years ago. i have always been slim and have now put on 17 kgs. Even after my third child i still went back to my normal weight.I walk 4 days a week ( Approx 5 klms) and eat healthily but still cant shift the weight going to my doctor to have the damn thing removed. When i think about it i have been more emotional since having it inserted.

How interesting that I find this information out now. I had my third child at 39 in 2005 and have always suffered from bad periods. I was talked into having a mirena inserted and thats where my story begins. I was told that I would have spot bleeding for about 3 months - after 9 months of continual periods I was well and truly over it as was my partner. I went to my gp who order an ultra sound. This showed it had moved and was sitting sideways and would have to be surgically removed. The side effects were herendous for me and still are after having it taken out two years ago. Not only did I have my periods for 10 months non stop, I had continual nausea, migraines (which I had suffered previously but not to the extent I was having them), massive weight gain, fluid retention, the worst pms which was constant and so so aggressive towards everyone I came in contact with. My sex drive went out the door and my relationship started to fail. My hair also started to fall out in handfuls and still does to this day and my skin was always so dry. I was also constantly tired and had very little energy. Two years ago I went in to to have the mirena surgically removed and at that time I also had an oblation and my tubes tied. The oblation worked for about 6 months but my periods are worse than they have ever been and thats because now Im told Im pre-menopausal!!! I still have the occasional migraine, my hair still falls out in handfuls and my skin is still really dry. My sex drive is starting to come back (thank god). I thought all these crazy symptoms would go away once this horrible mirena was taken out but it seems they're here to stay. I now see a psychologist every week trying to get my aggression back under control which is working well. I wish I had known about all these symptoms prior to having the mirena - I might still be with my partner instead of being single. My advise to anyone wanting permanent contraception - get your tubes tied and stay right away from mirena.

So I am reading all of the posts and Like the woman who posted on the 28th , I had and mirena after my 3rd child and then just this May after my 4th child. My first Experience with the Mirena was a little painful going in had 1-2 periods after and then not a period until I had it taken out. I can not say that it was or wasn't affecting my mood as my life was VERY stressful for many reasons. It was Placed in FEB of 2004 and then I had it taken out in June of 2006 because I felt like my body was rejecting it and I was totally uncomfortable and as soon as it was out I got my period. I thought this was normal and all my periods seemed Normal after that. My husband and I used condoms for the next few months for fear that I may be very fertile and then went back to our original family planning method. ( I had Never been on BC prior to the Mirena except for two months as a teenager for cramps) After having our 4th child, who was planned (3rd child was not planned that is why we decided on the Mirena at all) we were not sure if he would be our last and my OB thought I was too young to decide so another Mirena seemed like a good solution. I had it placed this may during my period and it was fine. I thought it was going to be just like the last one, I WAS MISTAKEN. I have had my period almost every 20days they are heavy and last about a week. I feel like my insides are falling out and I just got my period this morning and I had it two weeks ago. I have been unbearable to everyone in my Family and Ended my vacation today by storming off for five hours alone trying to deal my suicidal thoughts!!!! I came on the computer to search for a reason why I would have my period within two weeks of each other and founds this site. So much of this makes sense that it scares me. I have had a both experiences and am still trying to take in that my actions tonight may have been induced by my Mirena. Never would I have thought I would feel like this after my first experience but now thinking back maybe my coping skills with what was happening in my life then would have been better. As far as the weight When I had the first one Out I went from a size 14 to a size 6 (that at one point were big) in almost 2 months.... This time I have lost weight but I was also put on antidepressants which there side affect is weight loss!!! I am sorry if this is all over the place but my thoughts are all jumbled as I am trying to make sense of this.... I really never thought it was the Mirena until I read these Blogs!!!

wow i cant believe what i have been reading. I have been struggling with weight gain and mood swings for the past 7 months. My doctor thought it was post natel depression so put me on tablets. After gaining 15 kilos i went back begging for weight lose tablets but wasn't able to have them because of the anti doctors. It wasn't until yesterday when i was helping my friend find a suitable birth control did i work out that it was the merina that had been causing me to feel this way and why i'd put on so much weight. I've gone up nearly 3 dress sizes. I'm am now heavier then when i was full term with my third child, who is now 13 months old. I'm going to my doctors tomorrow to get this horrible thing out. Then i'll have to ween off the anti d's, which i probably didn't need in the first place. It has had such a bad effect on my marriage to the point we are now attending counselling.

I had the Mirena inserted in November 2007 after having my third child. The first 6 months I had bleeding everyday. The insertion was painless. For the last year I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with me. I really didn't pay much attention to it until about 4 months ago when I started having anxiety attacks. I figured it was due to stress of a new job. I have been so tired that I can barely function. I have no interest in even leaving the house. It is even hard to come to work everyday because I am exhausted. I don't sleep well. I wake up soaking wet from sweat. I have a lot of joint pay in my legs, arms, and hands. My arms stay numb most of the time. I too experience the moodiness and I can sit and cry over nothing. I have experienced hair loss since having the Mirena. As far as sex drive it is nonexistent, even if it was there I would be too tired to even do anything. I have blurry vision sometimes. I have gained so much weight it isn't funny. I thought maybe my thyroid was out of wack so I went to the doctor for blood work. My blood work came back great. After researching some more I found this site and apparently Mirena is the cause of my problems also. I go to my GYN doctor tomorrow for my annual exam and I am going to request that the Mirena be removed. I have three children 15,10, and 22 months so I can not live my life like this. I am glad that I found this website and I plan to pass it along for those women that are having problems that they may be blaming other things for. If you have the Mirena you definitely need to read this site. I'll keep everyone posted once the Mirena is removed.

I was put on Loestrin 24 Fe after the birth of my third child. Right away I started having joint pain in my knee's, feet, and hands. I couldn't grip anything and it hurt to stand and walk. I thought I was going crazy not knowing what was going on. After researching this pill, I noticed a lot of women was having the same problem. I will never take this pill again.

I cannot believe that I found this site. I just had yet another symptom pop up within the last few days -- joint pain. The pain is so extreme. I got my Mirena put in April 13, 2009 and it's been awful. I also have a sensitive cervix and bled all over the table and it was so extreme that the nurse had to use a handful of nitrix things to cautirize the area. Anyways, I was lucky that after my third child that I lost the weight almost immediately. I also have a low thyroid, which makes the weight loss all the more remarkable. I had the Mirena put in 2 months after having my son. I haven't stopped bleeding. I experience both the red and brown blood. I'm passing blood clots daily. I get light-headed and put on 10 pounds in 4 days. My hair is falling out. I have horrible abdominal pain, lower back pain and feel overall pretty lousy. As if my symptoms weren't enough to discourage intimate relations the severe bleeding any time we do have relations would. I surely thought that these symptoms were from my thyroid. I just had it tested. My levels were actually in the hyperthyroid range at 0.3 -- it's never been that low. Now, I'm wondering if like a lot of you that the MIRENA may be to blame. It's ridiculous how awful and woozy I feel. I haven't felt this bad ever!

I had the Mirena inserted over a year ago. When my ob inserted it, he cut my cervix. I suppose that should have been my first warning that this was going to be a nightmare. I have since been miserable. I have had headaches, nausea, dizziness, weight gain, swelling so bad I cant ever wear my wedding rings. I bled for the first six weeks and haven't had a period since, this seems unnatural to me. My weight fluctuates so badly i have to keep three different pant sizes in my closet-due to water retention. one day i'm a size 10 the next a 14. I have gained 15 permanent pounds. And my eating habits haven't changed a bit. I weigh more right now than i did the day i delivered my THIRD child. I am also on antidepressants, which started 8 weeks after the mirena. I am having it removed tomorrow. my husband had a vasectomy so i wouldn't have to deal with this anymore. If you are looking before insertion. . . . .RUN. . . RUN SCREAMING. The mirena is an awful form of birth control. I wish I had never had it inserted.

I've had Mirena for 6 months and after 3 children. I've always been skinny/underweight (5'6" 100 lbs) and after having my third child I am now a stable 120 lbs. I am very happy about my weight but the only thing I am not happy with is my stomach. I have always been blaming it on having 3 kids and that my skin on my stomach has just lost its elasticity. I have the same diet and I have also even been exercising a lot more compared to never even before Mirena. I walk at least 1-2 miles everyday and along with that I do pilates concentrating on just my abs. My stomach looks like I'm at least 3 months pregnant. I started to think it might be the Mirena so I googled side effects and came across this page. My stomach got weak as I read only 3 posts as there are many side effects. I don't want to believe it is the Mirena doing this to my stomach because I love how there is no more remembering to take pills and no more periods (only very light spotting for 2-3 days). I have three kids so I can easily forget.

I had the Mirena put in 2006 after my third child. I talked with my sister who had it put in a couple of years before. She could not handle all the other birth controls. It was very uncomfterable being put in but not untollerable. I spotted off and on the first couple of months. Had cramps for the first few days. After that nothing at least i though nothing till i read all these. My husband is in the Army, we moved to Germany the next year, I got very depressed. I also gain some weight not a lot but enough to notice. I was very moody the time i had the Mirena and felt very stressed all the time. I had the Mirena removed in 2008 so we could try to have another baby. It was not so bad getting it taken out as being put in. I bleed heave after for about 5 days. I also lost some of the weight not doing anything different. When my husband got home we tried to get pg for 18 days straight and nothing. The Mirena is not for everyone and you should think about it before you get it and keep in mind all the things different women have gone through to see if its happening to you as well.

i had the mirena inserted after my third child, may 2006. the hairloss started right away, but i did not contribute to mirena.the first year was great. everything the doctors and pamphlets said it would be. no periods, birth control thats inserted and you forget about it.my mom always said if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is! after the first year, symptoms were so gradual. the depression, moodiness, low libido, weight gain, muscel and joint pain, and the hair loss. it never stopped. my hair was always really thick and much longer. now with every trim, it gets shorter and thinner and thinner and shorter. i had it removed 3 weeks ago. im not hearing a lot about regrowth with the hair.im hoping women are having their hair grow back and too busy being happy about it to get on their computers.anyone having regrowth of their hair, please update. how long did it take to have a normal period again?

Hey I see Im not the only one with problems that the doctors blam on other things!! I have always been so healthy UNTIL I had twins in Feb 06 and had Mirena put in Oct 06 and almost immediately started having side effects.I started to read up and realized the ones I had were all listed as side effects with it.The first side effects weren't that bad but OMG now I am horrible.I have so many side effects and am wondering if anyone is in the same boat??Mine are:weight gain, hair loss, facial hair, migraines, irritability, fatigue,NO sex drive, anxiety, depression, fluttering in my stomach, back and joint pain, pain during sex, stomach spasms, the list goes ON and ON, oh and lets not forget they say I have PCOS!! Now I wish they could tell me how I went from perfectly healthy to THIS!! I have been to 3 different docs and asked to have it removed but surprise surprise they all did not want to remove it and now I have NO insurance..I am to the point if I could take the thing out myself I would!! I am SOOO miserable and if I say I want it out who are they to tell me no?? Can anyone else relate?? I AM GOING CRAZY!!!

I had Mirena inserted Nov. 2007 after the birth of my baby girl. I went from an extremely high sex drive to NO DRIVE at all. I had unexpected brain surgery 3 weeks after my daughter was born to remove a tumor, so I thought that I wasn't ready mentally or it was all the medications I was taking, I was never informed on any of these side effects (shame on me for not checking into it more- trust me I paid for my mistake by having my sex drive abolished). Two days ago, I noticed something poking me, upon investigation - The Mirena had completely come out. I discovered this about an hour after having sex!! My husband and I are not ready for a third child so I pray that I am not pregnant. I have yet to read another story where one has actually fallen out, so it must not happen that much. I hope I get my sex drive back and make my husband feel wanted again after a year as I will not be replacing it with another Mirena, I would have never had this inserted had I known there were sexual side effects because a high sex drive or any at all is now very important to me. I am now researching Paraguard, and aside from a regular to heavy period it sounds good to me because it is hormone-free. Aside from no sex drive and it falling out, I did not have any other issues like others have had with hair loss, cramping, etc. We did have the issue of my husband feeling it during sex every once in a while because there is a limit to how short they can cut it. In the beginning I had light spotting every 3 or 4 weeks for several months and then at about 1 year, no period at all. I have had more depression than usual, but we have had a lot going on in the last year so I can not blame the Mirena for that. Aside from the sex drive issues it worked very well for me and had it not fallen out I would never have been reading all these forums and educating myself.

I am glad to have found this information after deciding to google Yasmin and heart palpitations. I started having palpitations last night (I had them years ago when I was having anxiety attacks but not since and I am not under any stress right now). I just started taking Yasmin less than two weeks ago and will not be taking it any more (I started it for PMDD). I have also noticed pain in my right breast and I was on the verge of a bladder infection a few days ago since I did not drink enough water for a few hours (I have only had one bladder infection in my life and that was after delivering my third child and having a catheter). I have also had blurred vision twice since I started it (I have experienced that before but very, very sporadically - not 2 episodes within days, I have migraines and my dr. thinks the blurred vision is somehow related). I had chest pain for 2 days, granted, it happened after a tough workout, but that is still unusual for me. I've always had pluses and minuses with any form of bcp, but these cons don't outweigh the pros (which I have not experienced yet anyway).

Hi ladies

I am sitting here in tears reading all your posts! I haven't felt myself since I had my Mirena IUD inserted in Nov 2006! I had it done after the birth of my third child thinking it would be the perfect solution in not getting pregnant. Boy was I wrong! I feel like my life has fallen apart. I'm constantly moody, aggravated, irritable, angry, impatient, little sex drive, foggy and blurry vision, weight gain in places I didn't think possible, lower back pain, headaches that never seem to end and the list goes on! I have had a feeling about the Mirena being the cause for some time now and am not sure why I haven't researched it yet (I'm a research junky).

I'm making a phonecall right now to my midwife to get this thing out of me and claim my life back. I'm definitely doing a detox on top of that too!
Thanks for sharing all your stories and WHEN THE HECK ARE WE GOING TO TAKE SOME LEGAL ACTION!!???

I just want to say thanks to all of the women who have taken the time to document their varied experiences with Mirena. I have two sons and was pondering trying Mirena while my husband and I figure out if we want to have a third child. Honestly, I'd rather chance it until we know for sure. These side effects are ridiculous! I wouldn't have this put in my uterus for a million dollars! I don't enjoy the idea of any type of foreign substance or drug in my body. And this??? I can't believe my dr. would even suggest it! It's too bad, too. What is touted as the convenient, carefree birth control is, perhaps, convenient. But certainly not carefree, and definitely dangerous. Sure, it might be a comfortable option for some women, but do I really want to chance cysts, horrid mood swings, massive weight gain, hair loss, and migraines? I know what my answer to that is.

I am just in tears right now... Finally to know what is wrong with me is so overwhelming. I had Mirena put in Oct of 2008 after my son (third child) was born. No other bc had worked for me and I had miscarriages and two other children at age 24 because of this. My doc pushed Mirena like there was no other option on the planet. He raved about it and was VERY quick to just give it to me without discussing any negative side effects. In fact all I heard were positives, I went home AFTER it was in and looked at the official website to see what the side effects may be.
The hair loss started almost immediately, which like many others I chalked up to hair loss that you get after having a baby. I had pains all over my body, but I had a fall at the hospital (off a broken toilet seat with my numb epidural legs) but I didn't know why I was just...sore everywhere. Achy just all the time almost similar to when you have a fever but not quite. Then the memory loss began. This I thought was because my son had been born with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension and had to be put on ECMO. I thought the stress of it all was just causing memory loss and confusion. The fatigue was constant, never ending no matter how much sleep I got. And like I've read by so many others, thought I have 3 kids and I'm a full time student, my husband works 70+ hours a week, I'm just busy and exhausted. The mood swings, anxiety, and just overall feeling of being crazed started around Christmas time (I thought it was the holidays!)
So I began to cut down on SO much. Like my cleaning, I tried to make the simplest meals I could (I DREAD cooking something that used to be a passion of mine) just getting done what my body allowed. And week after week my body let me do less and less.
Today after an entire weekend of ocular migraines and getting 10+ hours sleep every night and feeling like I have gotten less than 2, fighting with my husband because I'm such a wreck and have ZERO sex drive, constant pain, and after my shower this morning looking at my hair just bawling seeing how much I have lost, I just googled all my symptoms.
I'm so thankful I did, I'm so glad I know that this stupid piece of plastic is what is sucking the life out of me! Thats what its like! Its like RAPID aging. A part of me is outraged too. Why does it take us having to do our own research to find this out? This is SERIOUS. This stupid thing has practically cost me my marriage, I can no longer do school work because I can't remember ANYTHING, I can barely take care of my kids, I make it through the day by the skin of my teeth and honestly I was thinking today if I can't live like this anymore. I mean that. If this got any worse...I don't want to think about it. This should definitely be told to anyone considering Mirena. Yes, it may be a miracle for some people, but there is the chance and I don't care how slight, we are living proof that it happens, that it will suck the life out of you and consequently destroy it. I'm changing docs and getting this thing out ASAP.

I wish I never had the mirena put in at all. I've had it for almost 2 years now after the birth of my third child. I let the doctors talk me out of tubal ligation. Boy am I sorry for that. It seemed ok for about a year. My periods slowed down, everything seemed kind of normal. But now I have irregular bleeding, like one woman described as old, stringy blood. My hair is SO thin I had to go out and get extensions, again, like another woman. I cannot lose weight no matter what I try, and I've always been very active and do some hard core work outs. Still, I'm not losing anything. I'm bloated. Headaches seem to be more present. I called my primary care and am making an appt for tubal ligation and removal of this horrible device. Perhaps some women like it. I cannot stand it and can't wait to have it removed. I just hope my hair grows back ok:( Good luck ladies!

After having my third child I wanted different contraception. I was over 35 now and could not continue on the combined pill and I definitely did not want to remain on the mini pill. I was not keen on the coil as I had one many years ago. The mirena however sounded perfect. The initial 6 weeks after having it were uncomfortable however I was advised of this. It has since been great.. the only issue that I now have is thrush, having never been a sufferer I have had it 3 times in the last 8 months sine the introduction of the coil. I am therefore linking the coil with thrush, Is this normal with this coil??

Hello everyone. Like most of you, I have been glad to have found this site and realized that there are so many other women experiencing the same symptoms as me and I am therefore justified to come to the conclusion it may be my Mirena causing these problems.
I had mine inserted in September 2005 for contraception. I am divorced and my ex-husband had had a vasectomy after our third child arrived in 1998. I had never been any good at remembering to take the pill and having always fallen pregnant very easily, I was after a reliable fuss-free birth control. I was a single mum dating a fellow on and off and couldn't afford the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.
Everything was just fine after the inital settling in period of about six months as suggested by the Gyno who put it in. Several of my friends had had them and we all seemed to have pretty much the same feed back. Lighter periods, breasts that we had never had before (I went from a lifetime of being an A cup to being a C cup almost over night and am now a D cup!). I had always suffered from really bad PMS - cramps, mood swings, etc. One great effect of the Mirena was I didn't have these mood swings and things were great with the kids not having to duck for cover every three weeks and lay low! I have suffered depression over the years, post-natally and after my marriage break down. I was more positive and started to enjoy life. I slowly went off anti-depressants and coped quite fine.
I am now 41 and have had the Mirena on board for almost 3.5 years. I remarried last year but also in the past twelve months symptoms have started the same as most of you have described. I am back on anti-depressants - only a low dose but my GP believed I needed it just to keep me "stable" - that is working. But the worst thing for me is the weight gain. I have always been reasonably slim, never had any problem losing weight after each of my three children. I am active and eat well. In the last year I have cut out so much fat and sugar in my diet, I walk 4 days/wk, swim once a week and was (until recently) going to the gym several days a week also, yet I just keep putting on weight. I feel bloated all the time, have fluid retention in my ankles and feet and I have this horrible gut - I have never had a gut! I've always had this lovely flat tummy. I know you put on weight once you hit your 40's but this is ridiculous. It is now starting to get me really down.
I am so glad to have come across all these postings because I know I'm not the only one. The other thing I have noticed is that my old pre-mirena premenstrual symptoms have returned - cramps, bad moods, dragon-like behavior, lower back ache, etc. All these went initially with Mirena - and I sang its praises to everyone and convinced several of my friends to consider one - now I think I better warn them of what they could be in for and to visit this site for themselves.
A lot of my other symptoms I have related to my under-active thyroid and have been considering returning to my GP for blood tests (although they were normal 6 months ago). I get dizzy, like a feeling of low blood sugar, get the shakes, heart palpitations (all normal hypothyroidism symptoms). I read with interest though about the thrist issues - I get really thirsty, especially during the night and now suffer really bad breath, mainly in the morning. And the comments about changes in eye sight I can also relate to. And forgetful!! I just thought it was motherhood, teenagers and age! I have also had a decline in libido - and I'm a newly wed - that can't be healthy! And I get pins and needles a lot - especially in my arms and feet - they often wake me at night.
Maybe Mirena has other things to answer for! That's why I am booked in next week to have it removed. This sight has convinced me its the right decision. I will re-post in a month or two and update you. Lots of girls ask for feedback on how long it takes to get back to normal - I will try to remember to leave some feedback.
Thank you to you all who have taken the time to share their experiences.

After having my third child in Aug 08 I wanted to try the mirena since I always forgot to take the pill. I have 3 friends that have this piece if crap it and they are fine but me I feel like I'm going down hill. I had it inserted on thanksgiving eve 08 and about two weeks later I started with a rash on my neck, shoulder, and arm. My doctor told me it was the shingles. He also did blood work on me cause I haven't been in the doctors in awhile and my test came back that I had severe hypothyroidism in which I didn't feel any symptoms of it. My doctor started me on 100mcg of levothyroxin and every since than its been down hill. He decreased my amount to 50mcg due to heart palpitations, anxiety, depression, diarrhea, weakness, muscle aches (especially in the neck and shoulders) and fatigue. I really wonder if the Mirena cause my thyroid to be out of wack and currently even with only a week of being on 50mcg I am experiencing anxiety everyday that my doctor prescribed me Xanax in which I was scared to take because I do not do drugs. After reading all these forums I am having mine removed on Tuesday Feb 3rd and hopefully this is really the cause of my problems. Has anyone else experience the same as me. I hate not feeling myself and not being able to take full care of my children. This sucks and the Mirena should be off the market.
