I'm on my 6th day of Mirena. I just had sex for the first time since insertion. I noticed that the threads are curled up and behind my cervix, rather than to the side where they have been every day.
What I'm really writing about is; starting yesterday I've had this lump feeling in my throat. it makes me want to gag and I cannot make it go away. I had this when on Yasmin. I developed a severe allergy to Yasmin and my entire face swelled. But it started with the lump in throat feeling. I have also had ringing in the ears all day, I even have it now. I haven't had that in years.
Is anyone/has anyone experienced this side effect? You would definitely know if you have it. It feels like something is in my throat.

Hi I am dumb struck by coming across this site i never dream it could be my mirena causing my unexplained symptoms but the more an more i read it i am fighting with my hospital to get it removed A.S.A.P. i have suffered severe dizzy spells, heavy legs, fatigue, sweats, headaches, loss of concentration, mood swings, bloating, thinning of hair, weight gain, depression, dont want to communicate, just fallen apart in the last 17 months, had number of tests all come back normal,i been back to hospital today to fight this corner an they need to see how many women this really affects as every doctor i have seen says no way can it be the mirena but reading all these this needs looking into.i am worried about the dizzy spells they are my most concern along with panic attacks that come out of the blue..makes me think it may be my mirena after all :( just want to be back to my old self again..i have been to A& E at least 9 times with same symptoms only to be put on diazepam which i don't like to take,i am so upset that i still got to wait 6 weeks+ to have it removed as i got to go under to have it done as they cant reach the threads they are up instead of down...i am hoping after my long wait that i have now found an answer to all my symptoms an the mirena needs to be looked into more.an after it is removed i hope i get better as i have also read it can have after affects.nightmare wish i never had it put in.....

I had the mirena put in 4 days ago. Unlike most people, I have not had a baby before. My doctor told me that I was still able to get it. I had been on birth control for 12 years and felt like my body needed a break from the extra hormones in birth control pills. I was off birth control pills for 6 weeks and have never felt better up until I had Mirena inserted.. Getting the IUD put in was one of the most painful experiences I have ever had. Since I had not had a baby before, she actually had to dilate me to get it in. My cervix had not been stretched by a baby, so it was hard to get in! To top it off, I have been sick ever since.
For the first 2 days, I had horrible cramping, nausea and back pain. To top it off, when my husband and I had sex for the first time my husband could feel the threads from the mirena and he said it hurt like hell. The pain from the threads he described as fishing line hitting his penis. We tried different positions and it didn't work. Has anyone else had this same problem? I have also been sick to my stomach ever since I got it. I am also having trouble sleeping. I am truly considering calling my doctor to already have it removed already. I cannot live my life like this and it is greatly affecting our sex life!

I am a 25 y/o mother of 5 boys, and my youngest is 8 months old now, and I had mirena inserted in Jan. 2009. I also I have lupus, so my hair falls out when I am pregnant or breastfeeding, but I delivered in Nov. 2008, and stopped breastfeeding in May 2009, and since I quit breastfeeding, my hair falling out has only gotten worse. The first 4 months that it was in, I had a heavy non-stop period. Now I get a 7-8 day period twice a month. In between my lengthy periods, I have a discharge that smells really weird. My partner tries to be understanding, but it's difficult for him I know. He says I have permanent PMS, and that I'm pushing him away. My mood swings from happy to sad to out right angry at the drop of a dime. It's kinda scary really, especially since I work around people and can't afford to have a break down out of nowhere. My partner also said he can feel the threads from the mirena sticking him when we have sex, and that it hurts him. On top of that, whenever we have sex, I always start bleeding for a couple of days (2-3) w/ real bad cramping. I have also had weight loss instead of gain, I get body chills, nausea, irritability, and the list could go on forever. I also had a bad experience w/ the depo shot, and I'm not good w/ pills, so I am looking for another form of birth control that isn't permanent because we would still like to try for a girl one day, just not now .... HELP ME!

at the most minor--occasional nausea and heat flashes for me
reading all these postings scared the hell out of me at first...
As I did, later on, all these people should heed their dermatologists' and doctors' opinion and advice before this website's and others' posts and personal comments (not to defile this respectable website), because they dance around various circumstantialities (percentages and likelyhoods, drug interactions with others, etc, etc). Whether they are of coincidence or not, I believe these people scroll through these posts and feel amazed that they aren't alone in terms of side effects and experiences regarding different drugs that other people have had too...
In conclusion--whether this makes sense or not--these comments and threads gather people together to, analytically speaking of course, scapegoat a placebo for any or all various "common side-effects"

To monkeygril, i had to rush myself to the hospital on Sunday because the pain was that intense, they couldn't find the threads then they had a look and took swabs, i went for a scan on Tuesday and they said the coil had moved down my womb, i suppose all the contraction pains i have been having means my body is trying to push it out, im going to get it out on tues because i cant take anymore of this pain, and i have really heavy clotted bleeding as well which isn't very nice, ill keep you updated on how i get on,
Cheers for now x

Further update. I went to get my mirena taken out but the doctor couldn't find the threads, she fished about for a bit while I laid in agony, still couldn't find them. I was then given a scan and they couldn't see it on the scan so I was sent up for an x-ray. Thankfully it showed up on the xray, it has got lodged somewhere in my pelvis/groin. Been sent away to wait for the gyny to call me to get me in for surgery, she isn't there until Monday so I have to somehow get through the weekend, they didn't even give me any pain killers. Please let me know if you know of anyone who has experienced this. I do think I've just been unlucky with the whole mirena experience, sadly its not over yet though!

Got Mirena in August 2006, 2 months after the birth of my son. It hurt and I was very dizzy afterwards. The bleeding lasted for about a couple of months, but got better. The problems have really been within the last 6 months. The small problems - joint pain, lower back pain, cramping, weight gain. Another problem, something similar to a catch in my uterus prior to orgasm. Oh my gosh! My husband has actually felt the threads during sex. The absolute worst problem is the migraines. I have a history of migraines - usually right before or after my period. Now, I cramp every week, have spotting about every two weeks along with migraines that put me to bed. Sometimes I vomit from the pain. I've used Midrin for years as a rescue medication. Most of the time, I have to take 3-4 to get rid of the pain. My regular doctor wants me to take Topamax. I'm afraid to. I'm thinking removal of this Mirena will help. Can anyone offer some info on how their migraines became after removal?

First off, I've NEVER posted to a thread like this before. But I've been researching Mirena side effects ever since my girlfriend mentioned her side effects to me a few weeks ago. I feel like a I'm having an "a-ha" moment. It's all making sense to me now that I've read this and other threads about the Mirena side effects. I had the Mirena inserted when my second son was 6wks, in Nov. '05. Aside from the bleeding the first 1-2 months, it was great. Then again, I was nursing him, and so any symptoms I might have had I would have attributed to breastfeeding. I stopped nursing him just before he turned 1, in Aug. '06. First of all, I've never lost my pregnancy weight. I thought it was just the fact of having 2 babies within 2 years b/c I was in my mid-30's. So far, the only way I've been able to lose weight is thru a liquid diet and exercise!
Also, I have been certain I was pregnant many times, each with a negative hpt! Last month, my period came 10 days early, and this month, no period whatsoever! My hubby keeps asking about it (I want another, he doesn't). I, too, have had the stomach flutters, which weird me out! They sometimes feel like pregnancy uterine stretching, sometimes like a little baby! I am ALWAYS tired (thought it was my "normal" from all I do), I am almost always bloated except just after a period, my breasts are almost always full ( and I gotta tell you, their already big enough, so that's not a bonus!) And I've NEVER had a stretch of more than two months with no period. My pre-Miorena periods were light and short with little cramping anyway. And we've been to counseling because of my sex drive! I actually told my husband that I was "good" with once a week! Even then, I often have to work at it just to get in the mood. (I'm 37 also, like another post said). I guess the one theme here is that I feel like I'm always pregnant. What else is out there? Scared to have this removed, b/c hubby wants a vasectomy, and I'm just not there yet. Not ready to let go of my lifelong dream of having a daughter in addition to my wonderful little boys.

i had my mirena placed about a month ago. my ob has one and she said she loves it and it is better than the shot or pills. so i thought i could give it a try. i didn't have a normal delivery and had to have a c-section. when we went to have the mirena placed the nurse told me that normally you still need to be dilated for the placement...and i wasn't. so needless to say the placement was horrible!! i had extreme cramping when she put it in, it felt like she was stapling it in(seriously), and i also felt the urge to pee all over her....oh it was horrible!!!! and that wasn't even the first of it. not only am i bleeding like crazy with HUGE clots, i had felt like the mirena moved cause i could feel the threads poking out. so i made an appt to go in, so they do a internal ultrasound and it was in place but the threads had mysteriously grown....my ob trimmed the threads and said that the bleeding will go away. (it still hasn't) this past week i have debilitating migraines and HORRIBLE cramps i have never had them before, so i look up side effects and i found this site and thank god i did. i also noticed that i am in a fog, like i am out of it all the time and all i want to do is sleep. and on top of all of that it feels like there is a rake inside my hoo-ha!! my husband and i have not had sex since it was placed. he is afraid it will hurt him...i don't blame him...it hurts me!! i can't believe i had this done!!! i am calling this morning to have it removed, i just wish i knew about this before!!!

Oh my gosh. I am on this website because I googled "behavior issues with Singulair" Both of my children are on Singulair. One from as young as 5 months old. Both Pulmonologist, allergist and Internal med Ped. insisted that it was a safe drug. They aren't living with it. My 7 year old has taken it consistently for 5 years and recently upped is having behavior, aggression, insomnia and constant reports back from the teacher on his behavior. We had him psychologically evaluated and they found nothing uncommon to his age. All his issues are described in almost everyone of these side effect threads. I am just afraid to take him off and feel the blame if something serious happens. I am calling tomorrow for possible alternatives.

Oh! And Furthermore, Lest I forget to register MY formal COMPLAINTS about Yasmin...
i was a healthy 160 pounds when i started taking Yasmin 6 years ago (about) I now weigh about 218. 60 pounds in 6 years for me =( I attribute some of that to Yasmin...
also~ signature heart palpitations, depression, moodiness. exhaustion crept up on me over time, worrying about everything, being tired but not being able to sleep, (these all contributed to my lask of ability to exercise overly much....palpitations during exertion are very scary....
horrible overall experience. Just got off, going back to condoms as a 31
year old woman! (tells you how bad the pills are) Will never take ANY pills ever again in my life and really think these pills should be taken off the market. in this site alone you will find over 4000 threads on the topic of bad Yasmin side effects....google it and Im sure you will find tons more, Get off this pill if you value your heart and your hair! and spread the word.... I wish you all the best and pray this isn't something even worse than we realize, or that the damage is not irreparable. =(

I had Mirena put in two weeks ago because I was told this will not affect my heart or give me major side effects like the pill or Depo does. HA! I have not stopped bleeding since, I've had cramps, been extremely angry (more than usual), and now I want to eat all the time too. I had been doing Weight Watchers to try to lose weight and had lost down to my pre-pregnancy weight and then had Mirena put in. Now that I want to eat all the time, I don't have any desire to try to lose weight. I just want to eat. I can't even have sex with my hubby because of the bleeding, and does anyone else still feel the strings? I looked up the Mirena website and it says of the two threads, one is made of some sort of poly-substance and the other is made of iron oxide. Um, that's a metal and I'm allergic to metals. I feel the threads ALL THE TIME. It feels like a burning sensation to a ripping sensation on occasions. Believe me, I even feel it when walking, which makes it difficult to want to exercise. Because I can feel the strings, I don't want to have sex because I'm afraid it will hurt my hubby. I'm calling my doc today to have mine removed. I'll just have to use condoms from now on because Depo destroyed my body last time I was on it and the pills mess with my heart and make me crazy.

Thank you

I'll just reiterate what everyone else here is saying. I've had Mirena in since April 2004 after my first child was born. For three years, everything was fine (at least I thought so. I was diagnosed with depression one year later), but last summer, my periods returned, I spotted a lot in between, my weight began to increase despite significant exercise, acne, facial hair, irritability. When this all began, I was training for a half marathon and was running daily between 4 and 10 miles a day. In November, I ran that half marathon, then decided it was the running that had whacked my system. In December, I started working with a trainer to help me figure it all out. I've lost inches in my hips and legs while my stomach continues to pudge and my body fat continues to rise. I eat egg whites, low-carb protein shakes, uncooked rolled oats, tuna, chicken breasts, grapefruit and fresh spinach almost exclusively. I've forgotten what it's like to eat like a normal person even occasionally or not think about everything that goes into my mouth.
In utter frustration, I went to the GYN to have blood drawn and battery of hormone and thyroid, etc., tests. Everything came back normal. Except for pap.
Could it be the IUD, I asked her. No. Definitely not the IUD, she said. I took her word. She shrugged and suggested I see an endocrinologist.
After putting my symptoms (only the symptoms and NOT the words "Mirena" or "IUD") into a search engine and getting page after page after page of message boards filled with Mirena horror stories, I'm trying to figure out how to get the thing out ASAP.
Does anyone know if so-called "doc in-a-box" doctors at med clinics can remove these hideous things or do they have to specially trained to remove like they do to insert?
And finally, why are doctors dismissing our symptoms? I'm furious!

Wow! I have been on Vytorin for 7 months. About a month after starting this poison, I had a panic attack. Scared me to death. I have been working with my Dr. to find the root of this new found anxiety. After reading these threads, it sounds to me like the Vytorin may be to blame. I also have a clay colored stool and have 2-3 bowel movements a day.

Hi Ladies,
Same here. A week and 3 days post-removal. I feel a little better except for my period coming back. It started on Monday and stopped on Thursday. It was ok. nothing major. Then started up with full force again on Saturday night to Sunday morning. It is very clotty and very painful. It has taken a toll on my body. I was in bed all day Sunday. I don't feel like I have been run over by a train as before with the Mirena in place, BUT I feel the PMS raging. I have felt lightheaded and weak from so much clotting, but knowing that this too shall pass is such a great feeling! I see the light at the end of the tunnel, but my only worry is that my body will take a while to get back to normal. I have read other threads on other sites that say after 2-3 months, it all gets back to normal. maybe it depends on how long it was inside? I just wish it would disappear altogether. That IUD is awful! I still cant believe I suffered so much without putting it all together. They make you believe wholeheartedly that it is not the Mirena causing symptoms. Then how else could a normal, healthy woman begin to deteriorate so much?
I was again surprised to see one or two comments about how they feel like an 80 year old woman. That was my favorite line before I found this website. It was quite shocking. It felt like I was listening to myself speak! No joke. I would be asked how I was feeling today and I would respond with sincerity that I was feeling like I was 85 years old.
What bothers me the most is that I was a newlywed throughout this whole time. My marriage suffered and I thought it was me and that I had a bad attitude. I thought that I was just so tired and nobody understood me. Don't ask me how but my husband had a feeling it was the Mirena the whole time. I could not believe it! I am sure many of you feel cheated out of a year, two years or more of a good life and a good marriage because of this. It is frustrating to look back and see how it all played out. To think that now I am "recuperating" and getting "back to normal". We should not have been going through that in the first place and we should not be recuperating from anything. Our bodies can get back to normal, but it's that emotional roller coaster that stays with you. To me, it's lost time that as a newlywed forming a new family, I could have enjoyed with my husband and daughter being my loving self and not a mean, raving hormonal lunatic like I was. Yes, I still feel really bad about it all. Mirena is a nightmare. I am blessed to have a wonderful sweet and beautiful 4 year old and such a patient, loving husband. They both kept after me, loving me, even if I was turning into Oscar the Grouch.
Don't give up, ladies. Hang in there!

I was really worried after I had the Mirena fitted on 14th Feb....great Valentines night that was...not!!! The fitting was excruciating, but that was nothing compared to the cramps afterwards! I felt like I was in labor!! The weird thing is I haven't had any bleeding with it that I expected. I am still getting period type pain but then last night I got abdominal pain in my left side which then seemed to travel down my thigh. Has anyone else has that? My husband and I haven't even had sex yet as I've been in too much pain, but as yet I haven't noticed a reduced libido, as I still want to!!!
The other thing that worries me is that the threads appear to be getting shorter, as though they are disappearing into my cervix!
I'm hoping that I don't get as many of the symptoms that others of you have, as I previously took cerazette, which contained the same hormone as in the Mirena, so hopefully I'm used to it by now.
Here's hoping!!!

I've posted on this site once before when I first had my Mirena fitted back in March 2007 (after the 2nd attempt of having it fitted). Like everyone else I have endless side effects to this, none of which my doctor doesn't think this is the cause, severe acne on my chin jaw line and forehead which itches, severe cramps and stabbing pains in my right side, tiredness, mood swings, always hungry, periods from hell, Joint pains, sickness, and illness ever since I've had it, you name it I've had it with this horrible coil. Well 2 weeks ago I decided that I've given it long enough and it was obvious that it wasn't for me so I went to the doctors to get it removed, she wouldn't take it out though as it was only 6 days ago that I had sex last so advised that I come back again 2 weeks later, well today was the day for me and you know what its like you get all prepared for it, and guess what, the doctor couldn't find the threads, she didn't even trim them at the 6 week check, so now I've got to wait for an appointment to have a scan to find out wear abouts it is !!! Just my luck, I've had nothing but problems since I've had this stupid thing.. so what happens after the scan I don't know.. Has this happened to anyone else??

I
I am currently taking a 40mg lipotor. I have devloped chronic hives mosttly on my arms and thighs. The itchng is so bad that I scratch these welts in my sleep. I have been on Plavix 75 mg since my first cardio-chatherization which has made my blood so thin that I actually bleed when I scratch. I'm now in a itch and scratch cycle that keeps me from sleeping. My doctor originally started me on 10 mg. This was before I started having clogged coronary arteries'. I am 74 years old. I have just had my second bypass operation. I started on lipitor 10 mg about eight years ago. I developed a hive like welt in my groin area. This welt or hive itched so bad that I damaged the skin. I went to a dermatoligist and the only answer he had after a biopsy was that it was probably Lichon Planus. I had a triple pass July 18 2007. That is when my doctor increased my lipitor dosage to 40 mg. He had increased it to 20 mg several years. I finally realized that it may be the 40 mg dose that causes me to wake about three hours later with Hives and itching that is so bad that even scratching doesen't relieve the itch.
I have seen two dermotoligsts. They can find nothing that I am allergic to. This condition has gotten progressivly worse over the last three years. I am taking Zanix and Benedryl I have eliminated all of my other medicines as the cause.
The only thing I could see as a possible cause is acute anxiety. After seeing my family doctor he prescribed the Zanix.
My last hope for relief is to get off Lipitor. I stopped taking it two days ago
and I already see a change in this chronic hive condition; I am assuming that it may take a while to see if I have solved my problem.
Incidently I started takng Zocor about three years ago instead of the Lipitor and I had such severe neck and shoulder pain that it was obvious Zocor was the cause.
zocor was the cause

I am a 34 year old and have been taking Yaz for almost a year.
I had some minor side effects until this past month when everything came apart at the seams. I do not know if yaz is the culprit - but the number of women with the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS as me listed here SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME.
My "minor" sude effects were the following:
* No period for 5 months
* No sex drive (was not the case before taking Yaz)
* Panic attacks / anxiety (no history fo this. My doc has now put me on Zoloft.)
* Bloating / weight gain
* Brown blotches (like age spots) on one side of my face
This is NOTHING compared to the last month of my life. Basically my life has sucked for the last month. Roughly a month ago my symptoms started with a red rash on the left side of my face and pain in my left ear that led to a migraine that has not gone away at all. (The pain level goes between a 5 and 10, but never lower than a 5.) The rash went away in 2 days, but my ear still hurts today (a month later).
My vertigo began roughly 5 days after the onset of my rash and ear pain and has been non-stop since. I've taken phenergan, valium, etc. - but they are not working. I get spinning/dizzy every time my head moves (up, down, left, right) and with up and down eye movement. It seems like my migraine pain intensifies when my vertigo hits me. If I lie completely still - I have no vertigo - but my migraine is still there. To make matters worse, I have become very disoriented, like I am in a fog all of the time. I am only 34 years old and feel like I am losing my mind. I cannot remember simple words at times and have a tough time completing sentences.
All of these symptoms coincide exactly to the day I began a new packet of the birth control pill called YAZ (Yasmin). I had taken this brand of pill for a year, and though it has worked (not pregnant) I have had some minor side effects up until the last month. The biggest side effect is that I have not had any period at all for the last 5 months. I have also had anxiety (no past history) and have no sex drive (not my normal self.) I stopped taking the pill about a week ago - after reading literally thousands of people with the same side effects I am experiencing on a website called medications.com (My neurologist also told me to stop taking it.)
I am NOT having ringing in my ears or loss of hearing. I mention this because I know other ailments have these as symptoms.
I have already been seen by my dentist, physical therapist, ENT, 2 neurologists and a gyn. So far - they are not helping. I have even been hospitalized for 5 days and all they really did was try and dope me up to sleep and had me take a very potent anti-migraine drug called DHE that must be administered over a 36 hour period via IV. Guess what? It did not work.
The most scary thing is that even though I get severe vertigo any time I move my head (even to the point of waking me up while I sleep) - NOT A SINGLE DOCTOR EVEN MENTIONED I MIGHT HAVE BPPV ( BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO) and they did not test for it at all. They were all interested in treating my month-long migraine with anti-migraine drugs. They all swore up and down that my vertigo was related to my migraine. They also said my fogginess was because I was "tired and sick" and many migraine sufferers are that way.
After my husband and I searched the internet and found dozens of websites, we are pretty much convinced that I have BPPV. We are going to get in front of a vestibular specialist ASAP.
So you know, I have been through a CT scan, two different MRIs, basic blood work on my white cell counts, thyroid levels, potassium, etc.
They have ruled out a sinus infection, brain tumor, pituitary tumor, stroke, blood clots, etc. They have simply treated me with anti-migraine medication - and it has been worthless. I have taken Topomax, Frova and DHE (the drug mentioned above) and my migraine is still there. These drugs have not helped one bit. My neurologist swore that the DHE would do the trick. Guess what? He was wrong.
I discharged myself from the hospital yesterday and am now at home.
I just want my normal life back. I cannot drive, work, take care of my family, etc.
My two biggest questions are:
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF BPPV CAN CAUSE MY MIGRAINE? The reason I ask is that the doctors all think that the migraine is causing my vertigo. All along they have been treating my migraine (with zero success) and have been giving me valium and antivert to simply mask my vertigo (no success there either.) No one has tried to really diagnose and treat my vertigo. Is it possible if I get my vertigo fixed my migraines will disappear?
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL PILLLS CAUSING BPPV? I saw woman after woman on medications.com have the same symptoms of vertigo, migraines and brain fog while taking the birth control pill Yasmin. I also know that my avalanche of symptoms eerily coincided with my first pill from a new pack. If they are related, I am most interested in what to do to get my hormones back on track in an effort to stop my vertigo.
This is all driving me crazy. A month ago I was absolutely normal. Now I am 100% disabled. I just want my life back.
Please help!
