OMG! I can't believe this! I told my husband last night that I was going to do more research on the Mirena, because I thought it was making my sex drive non-existent. He said he didn't think it was supposed to have that side effect. I am so glad I read this site. I had my Mirena put in January 2008, after my last child. I thought it would be great: no periods, no worrying about taking the pill, etc. After that, I gained 20 pounds and can't get the weight off, no matter what. I too had to get thyroid tests that came out fine. Got on anti-depressants for my tiredness, soreness every morning, and overall depression. Really moody, too. I thought it was the end of the world. I don't like to take pills to be happy, when my life is great. I am calling my doctor to have this removed immediately. Can anyone recommend a good birth control pill/method other than this that won't cause weight gain?

I took wellbutrin for a year. At about month 6 of that year I noticed a spot in the center/ front of my head, (right before my hair line) thinning a little. Didn't think much of it; I had enough hair for three people, no joke. That is not the case today. I quit the wellbutrin and have been off it for a year and i wish i could write to tell everyone it grows back, but for the life of me I cannot seem to get it to stop falling. the top of my head is the worse but hair comes out on the sides as well. Ive tried everything from vitamins, holistic docs to just running everyday. Ive had thyroid tests, blood test... everything except hair loss drugs because I don't believe this is the case trust me. Even if it were it seems to ridiculous to treat the side effects of one drug with another that also has side effects.

I had the Mirena removed 3 weeks ago and have already lost the 5 lbs I had gained from having the Mirena for only 5 weeks! The bloating around the abdomen has subsided. My pre Mirena PMS has returned but now I realize it isn't so bad after experiencing the Mirena side effects. Back to my regular exercise routine. Waiting for results of thyroid tests to see if there was an underlying issue which was worsened by the Progesterone.

weight-gain/ alternatives have been availalable.."Amour-thyroid" about.com any alternative medicine sites! Thy-Aid..etc,Synthroid does nothing for thy, roid issue Everything starts there! Bio-denticals deals w/ harmonal...read and learn..FDA lies! Alternatives have "Cured" ask "Breakthrough" Susann Sommers book w/ doctors! Larry King! Truth re: real cures for thyroid, not HRT's..yet another that has killed and/or close to from...Side-effects..alt's do not have side-effects.soon,if enough people stop being lazy and so afraid to take what will keep them alive and happy only then will ALT'S push the bad FDA approved poisons away! Both MUST be explored, but the FDA make billions w/ doctors who get kick backs from each script they write for the infamous SIN-Throid,made my life a horror..hypothyroid issue does not need syn! There are better natural things! Headaches, never get the right dose! Right thyroid tests? Endocrinologists will use those bio-denticals bec- hormone & Thy go together, for all of the idiots out there who think their doctors are sooo good, slowly they are killing them in many ways!

Hello Again. I'd like to correct my earlier statement regarding the migraine. The terminology is "migraine with aura" (it still hurt like a son of a b*^$& no matter what you call it). I'd also like to update you all with an interesting finding from my Dr. app the other day...it appears that I have "hyperthyroidism" which can, in fact, cause many of the symptoms that I've been experiencing. It may be a good idea, for those of you who haven't already done so, to have a complete blood workup, including thyroid tests, to rule out possible root causes for many of these symptoms. I need to undergo further testing (which is just how a Mom wants to spend her precious "free-time" eh?) but I'm still keeping Mirena high on my list of culprits! Best of luck!

I had my Mirena place June of 2008 being that it sounded like the best option and it still allowed me to breastfeed, and since then I have felt horrible. At first I figured that I was just getting used to it. Ever since I have had horrible anxiety to the point of a full blown attack at least once a week. Depression to the point that suicide crossed my mind on several occasion. I have extremely high blood pressure which I have never had before. Random outbursts of aggression. I am tired all of the time and my points get these sharp pains throughout the day. I have spent the past 2 months going through blood tests, thyroid tests, MRA's, you name it trying to find something that explains why at 23 I feel like this. I have gained 10 lbs and I have never had weight problems. I can't concentrate at all, even when I try my brain just wont connect to the information that I am trying to retain.Thank you to all of the people that have posted on here. I am calling my doctor first thing in the morning to have it taken out. I can't continue on feeling this way. I hope that this will help me get back to the life that I had before.

I had my Mirena put in October 2006. I have gained 40 lbs since then. At first it was great I didn't have to worry about birth control, becoming pregnant again and periods. I started to have mood swings, became withdrawn, no sexual desire, problematic acne, discomfort in my abdomen and weight gain immediately. I asked my doctor repeatedly about the weight gain, acne and mood swings etc.... I have Hyper Thyroid disease and have never been over 145 lbs in my life. He said the weight gain and acne was not from the Mirena and the mood swings, feeling isolated and the rest of my symptoms would eventually wear off. My thyroid tests proved to be still overactive after a 25 lb increase in weight. A year ago I told him I was uncomfortable being so heavy, having acne and I still felt withdrawn from family and friends and wanted the IUD removed. He reassured me that it was NOT the Mirena and that the Mirena was best for me because I have 4 children and no desire to have more. I periodically checked the internet to check for complaints about the Mirena and never came across much until tonight. I am completely horrified that my doctor led me to believe these symptoms were my fault and not the Mirena's and I feel like I have been robbed of over 2 years of my life. I am making an appointment at another clinic with another doctor to have this removed immediately. I now weigh 185 pounds and have acne scars!!!

I had my mirena taken out today. I had it placed in Oct or Nov 2007, and I have been soooo tired every single day since then, and it's just gotten increasingly worse. I've tried antidepressants, I had my tonsils and adenoids out to help with breathing and obstructive sleep apnea, I've started vitamins, changed my diet, picked up a bike.... NOTHING will shake this fatigue.

I did some research on it and found hundreds of women posting online about the ill effects of mirena - including depression, weight gain, FATIGUE, back pain, headaches, symptoms similar to a thyroid problem... some things I didn't think could be the Mirena, but lo and behold, here's an army of women in the same boat as me.

I had to argue with my doc to get it taken out (I read that a lot of women had to do this), stating I felt better on the pill when my body could bleed properly and my hormone levels were a bit different. He maintained that the fatigue had nothing to do with the mirena and the pill just had more hormones, but I said, hey, what I do know is that sometimes, some things just don't work for some people, even if it doesn't follow logic. He pleaded with me to give me a second antidepressant, and I said, hey, I won't fight with you, but let's try it my way first. I promised to go back in a month, and, if the fatigue has not subsided, I will submit my body to thyroid tests and more antidepressants. You've got it, doc.

Well, it's hard to tell so far if things have changed, since it's only been out for hours. One thing I noted was that my body did feel different - almost immediately younger, like my joints hurt less and whatnot. I'm a little tired now, but not as bad as I normally am. I also was not on my sleeping schedule today (went to bed two hours late and had split sleep).

Haven't had bad effects as a result of getting it taken out - I cramped a little this morning, but it was NOTHING compared to what I felt when I cramped on Mirena. Also, my cramps were in a little more normal area - more center. With Mirena, I cramped on my lower right abdomen, from hip to groin, every couple of weeks.

I have had my Mirena for 4 months now and I have also been miserable. I have been to my MD, tested for thyroid and diabetes. I went to my eye doctor because of weird vision problems. Weight gain even with exercise, bloated feeling, tired, hip and knee pain, back pain, hair loss...now I know it's all due to Mirena. I thought I was suffering from hypocondria since my doctor could not find anything wrong with me. I can't wait to have this removed, but at age 39 with 6 month old infant, I'm not sure what birth control method will be better.

I am a 27 year old who has been on birth control for the past 11 years. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen for the majority of that time until my sophomore year of college when the doctor suggested I switch to the "shot". Depo Provera caused me to bleed continuously for several months on end and I was then switched back to pills by my new gynecologist. He placed me on a generic form of the ortho which again worked wonders for several years. At 25, I started bleeding constantly from the generic and was switched to several Loestrin 24 which completely stopped the breakthrough bleeding... initially. After a year of it, we were back to constant bleeding. The ONLY side effect I have ever experienced from birth control is breakthrough bleeding. I moved cities and with a new town came a new doctor who thought Femcon might work. I was prescribed it in May and have been taking it for nearly 6 months. Over that time I have been so happy with it as there is no bleeding except when there should be. That is until I read today that my increased anxiety (I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder to begin with), vivid, realistic nightmares, and 15 lb weight gain could be caused by this pill. I am getting married in January and my dress barely fits at this point because of the weight gain. I go to the gym 5 days a week for cardio and weight training yet keep getting fatter... I thought I was stressed out by the wedding and that is what was causing my emotional imbalance... I really thought I was losing it. I just called my gyno and left a VM asking if this could be the reason... Don't quit taking a birth control based on other peoples reports, they are all going to react differently to different people and all meds come with an initial side effect that goes away once your body is accustomed to having that hormone or chemical in it. Initial nausea is common... I have always had it when I started a new medication, especially birth control. It goes away after a couple of weeks. Will keep you posted.

First off, I haven't taken Yasmin. However, if you're bloating with stomach pain or back pain, that's the side effect called angioedema, an allergic reaction. My advice is stop the drug. They screw with your hormones. Relief from angioedema can be found from an herb called Marshmallow (don't buy a big bag of marshmallows, not the same thing). I can't tell you this is a permanent fix, but it will ease the bodies immune reaction (the intestinal swelling, possible internal hives that is happening inside). As for those horrible mood swings and headaches, nature has an answer for that too, research GLA, available in evening primrose, borage oil and blackcurrant oil. I've taken borage oil for a month and the biggest surprise is after years and years of horrific headaches, no headache. For those of you on the pill to control acne, nature has a remedy for you too. The B-vitamin called Pantothenic Acid (500mg day) takes a month or two to work, but believe me when I say it was the only thing that did. No lotions could touch the results that brought me. One final piece of information for all women to research. The thyroid is a major player in hormones and immune health. Drugs screw it up. Don't bother with thyroid tests, they are not reliable. A simple $3.50 bottle of "tincture of iodine" purchased at Walgreens will tell you if you are deficient. Paint a 2x2 patch on your arm, if it's gone in under 24 hours you're deficient, if it's gone in under 10 hours you're severely deficient. 80% of people are iodine deficient, run a search for the "history of iodine" and you'll be surprised. I know I was. If you are deficient search for information on Prolamine Iodine and Iodoral and decide what you might want to try. This is just information to help women find out if something is deficient and will help them rather than rely on a drug that may do more harm than good. If it helps one person, it was worth posting.

Oh My Gosh - as I sit here with abdominal cramps typing my experience - I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I started taking Lisinopril in late April 2008. On May 2 I had severe abdominal cramps and massive vomiting for 8 hours. Finally got myself to ER after I sent my family on to our vacation (I joined 2 days later). The ER attributed it to food poisoning. Lo and behold, I had another "attack" on May 9th. Back to ER I went (my husband witnessed my attack and insisted I go). They took X-rays and MRI - found intestinal inflammation but didn't know why. My internest send me to gastro dr. Third attack hit on June 5th and gastro doctor sent me to major hospital ER. They, too, did MRI & blood work. Looked at gall bladder, pancreas, stomach, intestines, etc. They found intestinal inflammation. Gastro Dr. took more blood and did more test (CT, MRI, Colonoscopy, Endoscopy). He couldn't find anything so he sent me to rheumatologist. She did add'l blood work and genetic testing. She though I had an auto-immune disorder - like Mediterranean Familial Fever! Please...! But all her tests came back negative. She too had no answers, only treatment for symptoms - Colchicine and Prednisone. Yuk. After having my 8th debilitating attack yesterday (since May), I've had enough. I went to the Web and found this wonderful site - along with some others with helpful info. I don't have confirmation that the lisinopril is causing this - but it sure sounds like it. I am a 49 yr old female and I've had no "life changing" events in my life (except for this nastiness) and have been on no other meds. I find it interesting that out of all the doctors I've seen - and all knew of the lisinopril - that none suspected this as a side effect.

Add me to the list! I have been on 300 mg Wellbutrin for the past few years. My hair is falling out and you can see my scalp. Just like many of you, I went the thyroid tests route, to no avail. I'm so thankful that in my desperation I did a search on hair loss and this drug. I will see my doctor and get off this stuff as soon as I can. It does help with depression, but who on earth can deal with watching your hair fall out on the sink and on the floor and down your back....I'll take the withdrawal headaches, as long as I have some hair on the outside of my head. Thanks to you all for writing about it. We are not crazy!

I can identify with a lot of what people have posted here and glad I am not alone. I have been on and off NuvaRing for a few years now but this last time on it (about 8 months now) I have gained a significant amount of weight. I was a little bit heavy to begin with but I think the NuvaRing made it much worse and also harder to lose weight. I started working out in January as well as dieting and have been unable to lose even a pound. I finally went to the doctor and had some blood tests. My thyroid tests came back abnormal and when I saw an endocrinologist she attributed it to the birth control. I am also constantly tired. I have a white discharge all month long and barely get my period yet I feel like I have PMS all month long.

Back in July of 2007 I had a partial Colectomy and was given Levaquin before the Surgery. When I woke up from the surgery I immediately felt all types of strange symptoms like, vibrating all over my body, anxiety, chills, Heart palpitations, tremors, insomnia, memory loss, and panic attacks. They told me that it was the anesthesia wearing off so I just sat in bed feeling that way for my entire 2 week stay in the hospital. When I went home these symptoms persisted as well as continued pain in my lower left quadrant where surgery was performed. It has been 8 months now and the symptoms are not getting better. They have conducted MRI’s, MRA’s. EEG’s, EKG’s, CAT Scans, X-Rays, numerous Blood Tests, and Thyroid tests but have found no physical problem. They can see that I’m having the symptoms I describe but cannot give me a reason for them. At first they thought that my Thyroid was having problems that turned up to be inconclusive. The doctors are currently referring me to a third Colorectal Surgeon, a Neurologist and a Second Gastroenterologist. We are also looking for a new Endocrinologist and will be going to the Cleveland Clinic for help. My life has come to a virtual standstill and I have no Diagnosis or direction to go toward other then the possibility that I have been affected by the Levaquin they gave me. I found a website that has all kinds of information concerning Levaquin poisoning. http://www.fluoroquinolones.org

I have been on Singulair for about 2-3 years during which time I have lost a considerable amount of hair. It is quite noticeable. My hair hairdresser said "this is not good" the last time I got a haircut. I also have bad dreams, fatigue and irritability. I want to try something to replace the sinulair for asthma, but am trying to avoid steroids. Any suggestions? Would appreciate any information on a class action suit if the hair loss is not reversible when discontinuing product..

Hello,

I read about how YAZ birth control pill affects the body and psych and I am now scared. This is my 2nd day of YAZ (I've never been on birth control pills ever and I am 27 years old), it's all new to me but after reading all these negative posts about Yaz I don't know what to do. Before the birth control pills, I was depressed, annoying, serious weight problems - 210 lbs :~~((, low energy, low libido, always tired, terrible migraines every 2nd day, ridiculously increased appetite and excessive hunger, hair where it shouldn't be, menstrual blood clots, excessive cramping etc
I have all these problems for 3 years now and now that the family doc. put me on YAZ birth control pill I am even more scared - mainly of more weight gain, it would be a tragedy for me, I am fat enough already and what's worse I can't lose the weight, exercise doesn't help, diet doesn't help, NOTHING. Will YAZ birth control pill worsen my already tragic condition? I just don't know what to do and what to believe ... I appreciate any advice or help you can give me ... Thank You to all!

I used to take Lamictal 150mg at night, no problems, but started feeling anxious in the afternoon/evening. My Dr. Rx'd 300mg lithium at night to see if it would help the anxiety, but I had very fitfil, unrestful sleep to the point where I was not sleeping much and very tired all day. So, the Dr. took me off lithium and substituted Tripletal 300mg in the evening. That worked, but I was still a little depressed & she increased my Lamictal to 200 mg at night. I started waking up after about 4 hours with horrible nightmares. I thought the nightmares were from Trileptal because that was a new med, but even after I discontinued it, I still get the nightmares/panic feeling that wakes me at night. I took 2mg Lunesta for a while to help me sleep, but then I slept too much 10-12 hrs. I take the Lamictal now in the morning & don't get those nightmares & I sleep fine now, but I feel anxious & dizzy and have trouble concentrating, again about 2-4 hours after I take it in the morning. Dr. says I can take ativan to help the anxiety, but I feel like I need to get off Lamictal and try something else. Maybe lithium will help if try to take it now witout the Lamictal.

I had a series of racing heart events for a week and went to my doctor. She said it was probably stress and my heart was very strong. They stopped. I went for thyroid tests. My tests indicated I was well within the safety range. I ususally see a woman doctor who works with her husband, but this time I saw him. He said I was hypothryroid and if I did not take Armour, I would be at a cariologist's office. I got scared. I knew my numbers were good, but I caved. I started on 1/4 gram for a week and then to 1/2 for a week and then to 3/4. On my second night of 3/4 I was awakened 5 times with racing heart. I called my doctor and he told me stay on two. I questioned him as to whether this was appropriate for me and he said, DEFINITELY. I decided to withdraw. I cut back my meds. One night I woke up with a racing heart that gave me a nose bleed and I was very scared. Two nights later I woke up with a racing heart that scared me to death as it was going so incredibly fast that it shot down my left arm. I was afraid to go to sleep and started not being able to sleep. I final reached crisis and did not know what to do. I got in touch with my regular doctor who said I did not need the meds. This was corroborated by another doctor. I have not yet spoken to the doctor who misdiagnosed me and came close to causing a severe heart malfunction for me. I will not return to that doctor and will never even consider taking such drugs again.
I was clearly overdosed.

Has anyone ever had tons of weight gain while taking Singulair? I have been on this drug for about four years now and my weight has increased to more than 50 pounds of weight gain! I have a lot of aches and pains, leg cramps at night, insomnia, but the asthma has improved. I still get my once a year very bad attack with bronchitis, etc, but the improvement was great.

I have had everything else checked out for my weird continued weight gain and everything is normal. So I am checking out this drug and one other I am on for thyroid. (No, it's not my thyroid, my thyroid tests are normal now). It doesn't matter what I do I gain weight. Just wondering if this drug is causing it. My doc told me it was the cause of my insomnia and suggested moving it to the A.M..

I am tired of this weight gain, and it is starting more physical problems, like my bad knees. I ahve always been active and my eating habits haven't changed. Dieting is not working either. Any suggestions? Anyone else gaining unexplained weight?

Thanks!

hi abs528,
can you tell us what the reason was for your throat ache? I too had a very bad sore throat after i started taking yasmin , and now after being nearly 4 months off the pill, my throat still hurts sometimes. my doc thought it is related to acid reflux so made me do a upper GI series which turned out to be normal . then the GI specialist recommended that i take pepcid(high dosage) for a few months. but the sore throat seems to get worse 1-2 weeks before my periods i.e after 4 weeks but then i dont actually get the periods till about 6-7 weeks. my gynac is doing hormonal and thyroid tests but i havent got the results yet. one more doc i had seen sometime back said that mostly the sore throat is related to the hormone estrogen which causes bloating and swelling of my throat.
So all in all everyones confused about the exact reason for my throat ache and moreover nobody believes that yasmin trigerred it off :(((
any insights will be appreciated.
thanks all..

hi ladies,
yet another update! i have just been to visit my doctor to tell her about my recent revelation that i think yasmin caused all of my anxiety/panic attack/depression issues not to mention the huge list of physical symptoms, she hmmmm yes that can happen with contraceptive pills especially if you have hormone problems or thyroid problems..which i do! she is running some new thyroid tests to see what my levels are doing now i am off the yasmin as i became hypothyroid while taking them (i have hishimoto's disease but it has been under control for ages). she seems to think there is definately a link between poor thyroid function and contaceptive pill side effects because the tyroid controls your hormones as well as countless other processes in the body. She was totally behind my decision to stop taking yasmin and suggested a total detox from any chemicals and to eat well and drink loads of water as dehydration is also a major factor in anxiety/panic attacks and depression. rather than just dismiss my ideas she actually agreed with me!!! i was shocked as my male doctor looked at me like i was mad for making such a suggestion last year when i started to get all my problems,i was perfectly healthy before i took it! well there you go ladies that is my rant for the day! the moral of the story is...if you were fine before you started taking yasmin and you're not fine now maybe your birth control pill is the prime suspect!
