I was diagnosed with PCOS after having its symptoms for 10 years.. For a couple of years those symptoms gradually started to get worse - hirsutism (hair around the mouth, on the chin, around the nipples), and the adult acne that wasn't going away despite any medication. And i started becoming really depressed because of that.
The ultrasound and blood tests confirmed the PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and the extremely high levels of testosterone in the blood (result of pcos). I also had abnormal period - sometimes missing a month, sometimes having it 2-3 times a month. The physician told me that it was bleeding and that I'm not ovulating. She prescribed me Yaz - said it's the lowest-dosage bc pill, said it will lower my testosterone, raise estrogen, get me rid of excess hair and acne.
After a week of Yaz, i started feeling even more depressed than usual - started having nightmares, feeling very tired most of the time. Today was the end of the second week, and I am stopping taking Yaz, for good. Yesterday, I could hardly walk a mile - so extremely tired I felt. This morning - could hardly walk to the second floor. And, all day, felt extremely vulnerable, weak, and very very depressed: I started crying just looking at the gray sky, and couldn't stop. I barely got home, because I felt extreme fatigue, and burst into tears, blaming everyone around on how unhappy I am. Now I know, it's the Yaz talking... I am 26, and I am stopping this pill NOW. For my PCOS, I'm hoping to get better results with alternative herbal treatment and acupuncture.

Wow. Not sure what to think here. I was in the ER today with heart palpitations and chest pain - really bad pain. . . thought I was having a heart attack. Mine started low sort of in the stomach and worked it's way up and settled in my chest. I could breathe but the pain was overwhelming. I sat on my yoga mat in the park took a few pepto tablets, called the Dr. and after almost an hour of pushing on my diaphram and trying to breathe and ease the pain I had to get help. Guess what - like most of you I'm extremely healthy. The EKG, stomach and chest x-rays and blood work (all done today) are fine. And I've been on Yasmin for too many years to count. This is not the first time I've had tightness in my chest or palpitations. One night I thought my heart was coming through my chest for hours on end I sat straight up out of bed and went to the ER the next morning on the advice of my allergist. Again all was fine. I always thought it was some "allergic" reaction to some other test I'd had done with a reaction to dye or some other medical interaction since I tend to be allergic to many things and get allergy shots. This really makes me think about getting off this pill, and I just happened to stumble onto this when I typed "chest pain" in as part of my search. It has been less obvious for me since this has happened infrequently but twice now in a few weeks. And it is rather frightening. Best of luck to all - thanks for the posts.

I've been on Aviane for almost 3 years now. I decided to look up the pill for the first time today because I was frustrated with my unexpected weight gain. Of course I have had other symptoms on this pill such as irritability and depression but I never really related it to the pill. Other than that I have loved this pill and thought I was walking in the clouds compared to my other friends and their bad experiences with birth control!
My question to all of you is: could my unexpected weight gain be due to the pill or something else entirely? Since I've been taking it for so long I'm not sure it's possible that it could be the pill. Here are a few facts:
I am 23 years old (so I started the pill when I was 20). I have gained about 15 pounds since I've been on it. I eat very healthy and exercise 3 days a week. I have never had any problems with weight gain in my mid section until now and so I am looking for answers!

I took Avelox for the first and LAST time today!! I have had 4 ear infections in the last 4 months. My sinus drains into them every nite. My ent prescribed Avelox b/c she want to kick the heck out of this infection. I was abit nervous about taking a different antibiotic because within the last 2 yrs I've developed food allergies. I took it and drank a big glass of water with it. Very soon after I started to feel strange. My throat felt tingly and I felt very anxious and thought I was going to throw up. I calmed down enough to get my son to a neighbors house and get to the ER. Of course I had to wait there I did get a hold of my anxiety. Right below my adam's apple inside my throat felt like the pill was stuck there. I would feel like it was a burp or gas that just couldn't make it out. My stomach felt queasy. I thought I might puke in the waiting room. 4 hours later I am home and feel like crap. My body is achy. My head feels like I've taken percaset(sp) I'm shakey and tired. Climbing the stairs it hard, my legs feel like sandbags. The dr. in the er said he doubted it was an allergic reaction because of how fast it came on. Reading about others experiences makes me think the DR. is wrong!! I did take it on an almost empty stomach. My co-pay on this crap was $55!!!!

I started taking Aviane maybe a week ago and i've never felt like this in my entire life. At work yesterday I just wanted to snap at everyone, and today i woke up with a horrible headache. I'm dizzy all the time, my vision is is weird, I'm getting pains and numbness in my right leg and arm, I feel very weak, I'm getting very bad pains in my chest and shortness of breath, i'm nauseated and I'm so grumpy and sad all the time. Today i've wanted to just cry for no reason. This was bothering me so i looked up the side effects on the package and i have most of the severe side effects. This scares me so much ! I stopped talking birth control almost a year ago because i was very forgetful, i was on alesse, so this time they gave me this pill because it was cheaper (even though i am fully covered) I was concerned and questionable about it but the assured me that it was the same as alesse just generic. well i'm going to stop talking it as of now and going back to my doctor.

OMG I am so glad I found this side. I have just started taking Yasmin.
Previously I was on Mercilon and found that I got very nauseous a few days before my period was due (this happened a week ago on Friday) so I asked the doctor to change my pill and he prescribed Yasmin. I have IBS and last Wednesday I had a several attack (I was on my period as well). I then started taking Yasmin the next day. By Saturday I had to spend the day in bed as I felt so sick. I actually thought I was going to be sick. There is a bug going round work so thought it might of had something to do with that or my IBS. IT started to clear by the beginning of this week, but even now my stomach feels like someone has kicked me, I just cant eat (the thought just turns my stomach) and I feel sick ALL of the time. Today I realised that this is most likely due to the Yasmin. I am going back on Mercilon as of next month. I decided I would rather put up with one day of feeling sick than all the time! The doctor and the pharmastic told me to continue taking Yasmin till my period but I just cant do that. I am not covered this month anyway because I changed mid way through my period so I might as well not take it and be careful for a month.
My sister takes Yasmin and has no problems at ill but its the worst one I have ever taken. I had problems with Dianette as well but my body cant take the high Oestrogen levels. I think it is weird how a pill can work for one woman and not the next when effectively they do the same thing!

Sorry, I can't just walk away.
When you find patents or patent applications for certain purposes, then you know that your ideas are well founded. There are several patents for using an anti-malaria drug for asthma. I would bet that somebody had that idea all the way back to the 1960's. So it is very possibly no coincidence at all that a chloroquinoline or other quinoline ring would be part of montelukast's chemical structure.
Here is one of the patents.
******
It is well known that quinoline rings can be toxic to some people even very rapidly. As in this very extreme example.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PEDIATRICS Vol. 27 No. 1 January 1961, pp. 95-102 This Article
FATAL ACUTE CHLOROQUINE POISONING IN CHILDREN
Howard M. Cann M.D.1 and Henry L. Verhulst M.S.1
1 National Clearinghouse for Poison Control Centers, Accident Prevention Program, Public Health Service, U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare
Four cases of acute chloroquine poisoning in children are presented. In three instances death occurred within 2 hours of ingestion of larger than therapeutic amounts of the drug. The rapid occurrence of death in acute chloroquine poisoning is probably explained by complete and rapid absorption of the drug from the gastrointestinal tract resulting in high blood concentrations which depress vasomotor function and respiration. Cardiac arrest follows and may be caused by the direct myocardial action of chloroquine, to anoxia, or to both. The similarity of the manifestations of acute chloroquine poisoning and those of acute quinine and quinidine poisoning suggests that acute toxicity may be attributed to the quinoline ring portion of these drugs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think that we are seeing extreme examples. But we may be seeing less extreme immediate reactions or reactions where the toxicity builds up over time.
Quinoline rings are know to cause neurotoxicity. There are theories about how that happens. One of the theories is about blocking connexins which are gap junction proteins in the brains.
I don't know how montelukast could be breaking up so that it causes toxicity. Or if the problem is the how rapidly the liver enzymes can metabolize it. But there is plenty, plenty, plenty of clinical evidence that there is a quinoline ring culprit somewhere in the picture. Or some by-product of that causing problems.
Somehow it was decided that montelukast did not have the safety issues that the other drugs in the same category have. See this.
"The starting point in the development of montelukast appears to be a quinoline-containing structure, likely identified as a weak random screening lead (Figure 3). The Merck group hypothesized that this molecule was mimicking the olefin backbone of cysLTs, and that the addition of mimics for the acid and peptide regions of LTD4, might improve its potency. As a first step, the dithioacetal linkage first seen in some SmithKline compounds was incorporated; this led to a compound with greatly increased in vitro potency but poor oral bioavailability. When one of the carboxylic acids was replaced by an amide, forming MK-571, the new antagonist had even greater potency and good efficacy following oral administration. The enantiomers were resolved to yield MK-679 (verlukast), a compound with better clinical effects than MK-571, but whose clinical development was stopped for safety reasons. Further structure-activity relationship studies led to the development of montelukast (16), an antagonist that appears free of the safety concerns plaguing earlier members of this series."
If we can find out why the earlier versions were not safe and how they thought fixed it, then maybe we can find out what is going on with the quinoline ring in some people.
I would be very surprised if the FDA will address our concerns. Why does it always seem like they wait for enough people to die like in Vioxx? Wasn't Vioxx responsible for thousands of deaths?

My Dr. prescribed Seasonale, but pharmacy gave me generic Jolessa. I've been taking it for 1 1/2 months and have been bleeding since after the 1st week. I have mass amounts of constant brown discharge and clotting with daily breakthrough bleeding. I get headaches, cramping, bloating, light headed and dizzy episodes, and my mood has been edgy (maybe from a sexless marriage due to these pills, lol). I've been taking bc for 16 years and have never experienced these symptoms with any other pill I've taken.
Spoke with my doctor's office a few weeks ago and was told that the bleeding can be normal and don't be surprised if it lasts for 2 WHOLE CYCLES that is 6 months of bleeding and clotting! I know what is normal for my body and this is not it! I'm calling my doctor for the 2nd time today and will demand my prescription be changed to either the name brand Seasonale (which my ins will cover) or my previous pill.

Found this site and read the postings for the first time today. I cried when I read the first posting because it was as though I had written it myself. I have experienced so many of the negative side effects such as, depression, apathy, loss of sex drive, crying almost every day, anger for no reason, pain, and more. I am 38 years old and have been using the ring for almost 2 years. I took it out today as soon as I finished reading other's experiences. I am looking forward to being my "old" self soon, and I know my husband and children are too.
Maybe the side effects are worse for women in their 30's and 40's versus 20's. Not everyone posted their age but I was curious regarding this possibility.

I was just prescribed the Imitrex nasal spray. I took it for the first time today. The first thing that happened was my nose felt like it was on fire then i had a horrible bitter taste in my mouth and the back of my throat. About 10mins after i took it i throw up and my stomach started to hurt. Plus the bitter taste was still there and nothing but time made it go away. My headache went away true enough but I would rather suffer a migraine then go through that again. And my headache came back not too long afterwards.

I took 25 mg of Toprol for the first time today for high blood pressure and a high heart rate. I also have mitral valve regurgitation. Already, I can tell that I'm in a fog, very tired, and my chest hurts. I even took a nap around 4:00 pm today, and had a terrible dream. My hand and feet have been freezing cold too. Is it safe to stop taking this medication, since I have only taken 1 pill? I want to call my Doctor tomorrow. Thanks!!!

I am taking Adderall for the first time today, for ADD-like (inattentive rather than hyperactive) executive function symptoms resulting from a brain injury (frontal, especial left frontal, and temporal lobes) I sustained 8 years ago. I have had extremely bad problems with productivity ever since. I am a twentysomething female, 5'8" and 135lb and I took 10 MG an hour ago. I would say I am feeling unusually alert for this time in the morning, senses feeling more "awake," my heart rate a little elevated but not too abnormal, and also in a particular sense feeling calmer/less anxious than ordinary. I feel less compulsion to websurf, which is something I have a serious problem with. I'd say I am also finding it easier and smoother to compose this writing than I would ordinarily, I am hyper-literate and have a strong desire to write, but writing is usually like pulling teeth--very slow and very hard to organize my thoughts. I am starting to feel a buzz; I find a caffeine buzz very unpleasant and distracting, and caffeine doesn't seem to help my attentiveness and productivity all that much. But I am more alert and focused, and that part feels good. It is so tiresome and frustrating feeling "lazy," unfocused, foggy, and restless like I normally do. The buzz I am feeling is getting a little more intense and my heart rate also up a little more, I feel kind of tingly. I kind of don't like it and time will tell how much it bothers me after I am more used to it. I suspect that I may find it a reasonable trade-off to feeling focused. And again, in a particular sense I feel more peaceful than normal because I'm not having the stray thoughts and spacyness I normally do. That feels like a relief. I think I can see why people eat less on this drug, because of the heightened physiological state and the reduced feelings of boredom or restlessness that often drive people to eat. If I can use it to eat less sweets that could be good, but I will try to be careful to keep eating regular healthy meals. It's now an hour and a half since I took the pill and I think the effect is perhaps plateauing. My sinuses feel very clear and my mouth is perhaps a little dry. I was a little afraid to take this thing but the buzz feeling is probably not quite as bad as I feel after a 12 oz cup of black coffee and much less bad than a bad dose of nighttime cold medicine I had once, and with more benefit. I'm going to leave this posting at that and see what more I can get done today. Hopefully these observations help someone.
To the 15 year old wondering whether he/she should take Adderall, this is something you can/should ONLY decide together with a doctor. The doctor will be able to give you much better advice than anyone on the internet. Seriously. But if it puts your mind at ease any, you should know that underweight, unless it is extreme, is not in itself a serious health risk. If being underweight makes you self-conscious that is also a consideration, but a doctor can probably help you somewhat to manage your weight whether or not you take a stimulant.

I'm 43 years old and had a baby 5 months ago. I decided to go back on the pill and have been doing a lot of research about the "right" pill. My gyno recommended Loestrin 24 FE because of the low hormones/less effects. I was scared to death to start this pill based on all of the horrible reviews I've been reading. So, I thought I'd report on my experience so far... It's been two weeks and so far so good. I haven't noticed anything dramatic so far. I will give it more time and see how it goes. Hopefully it continues working well. I have a feeling this pill is better for women in their 40's who are peri-menopausal. Maybe the estrogen is too low for the younger women, I don't know. I'll continue to post comments as I stay on the pill. I value these reviews, but remember, everyone's body is different. So far this is working for me but again, it's only 2 weeks. Hope you find thi helpful.
