I had the Mirena put in 2 yrs 9 months ago. I had continual spotting for about 6 weeks after insertion, which was really annoying but they did tell me to expect that. For 2 years I noticed a couple of side effects...some cramping and the belly flutters (which is so weird to hear of other people having them because I thought I was just crazy!!!) And the acne..oh, the acne! Also I haven't been able to lose weight very easily, even with dieting. All these things were ok side effects to me. But now after 2 and a half years the side effects have gotten a lot worse. I kept telling my husband that I was sorry, I just couldn't' understand why I can't get motivated to do anything besides sit around. I am bloated all the time and crampy. Not just cramps but I'll have sharp pains in my uterine area. I went in for my annual exam and they said the strings were where they belonged. Prior to that exam, I was having light 2 day periods regularly. Since then, I have been bleeding (some heavily, some light) for SIX WEEKS straight along with having cramps and fatigue and the missing motivation has gotten even worse. It is coming out tomorrow morning. This is not worth it at ALL!

My daughter is about to turn 5, she was prescribed SMZ-TMP a few days ago in order to prevent another ear infection.
She has been having terrible diarrhea, which is obviously normal, but along with that she started vomiting, she is now vomiting every time after taking the medication. She has a loss of appetite and has barely ate anything in the past 3 days! The poor thing has been battling diarrhea while throwing up at the same time along with terrible stomach pain/cramps. I am calling the doctor first thing tomorrow morning to discuss discontinuation of medication etc.

Hello. I am 25 years old and have been using the ring for about three months now. I just removed it today. I have also tried the patch, Yasmin, and yaz before switching to the ring. I am very sensitive and birth control has always seemed to make me sick. Although lately i have been having weird vision things like little flashes of light, or very quick dimming for like a 10th of a second. I also suffer from anxiety and have many physical symptoms of anxiety including headaches which seemed to have increased since starting the ring. Has anyone else heard of weird vision changes. I saw my doctor today and she wasn't sure, she wants me to come back tomorrow morning. My blood pressure is also elevated. I also have chest pains which are due to anxiety but seem worse with the ring. And it takes me a long time to have an orgasm with the ring. I feel scared lately and man my husband and i hate using condoms but i don't know what else to do! Ahhh it sux being a woman. Why cant they hurry up and make a birth control for men huh? any responses would be really appreciated.

Hi, I am 51 years old and 10 days ago had a Mirena fitted as I have been having very heavy period bleeding for the 3 months. I was tossing up between an ablation (burning of the uterus lining) or having the Mirena. As my Aunt was thrilled with her Mirena I thought it would be a safe choice and it wouldn't be as traumatic on the body. I have had continual lower back and pelvic pain. I was quite scared last Friday that I rang the Specialist. I spoke to the nurse as the Doctor was away and she arranged a Pelvic Ultrasound. The technician told me that the Mirena was in the right place and everything seemed fine but every time they were scanning my left side I was in terrible pain. I haven't heard from the Specialist yet (will ring them shortly). The back/pelvic pain is so sharp at times that I can't move. I've just rang the Specialist and will see them tomorrow morning, fingers crossed this can be sorted out.

Wow! So glad I am reading this. I had the Mirena inserted Feb 2006. I never put all these things together before today. I did a search to see if Mirena makes PMS worse, because for the first time I actually noted dates on my calendar for the last three months, of when I am a fight picking, agitated, quick to yell, mean, miserable, sooo easily pissed off psycho. ...I don't bleed at all anymore, and haven't in over a year now, so I just don't pay attention to "that time" anymore. So I'm reading the side effects I have attributed to turning 30 almost 3 years ago. (now 32) So the chin hair and fat tummy may NOT be my age...huh...who would think!? Not to mention sore breasts and wicked nipple soreness, and zits like a 15 year old at times. Oh, did I mention PMS like a crazed woman? I can't stand myself today! I was so mean to my kids and hubby today! And the scary thing, when I do it, I don NOT care at all! I actually want to be mean when I feel that rage, and it comes EASILY! I don't look for it, or pick fights...but cross me?....ohhh...NOT a good idea! And it's always within the first week of the month. I am calling my Doctor tomorrow morning...Game on baby! Get'er OUT! Good luck to you all!

I was prescribed Bactrim for MRSA on August 26th, (2) 500 mg pills twice daily for one week. My first dose was that night, and the following morning I woke up with a severe migraine, and eye muscle pain. Day two I woke up with the same symptoms plus mild fever and severe pain from my neck down my spine. I was worried it was meningitis. Went and had my abcess drained and told the instacare Dr. all of my problems I had been having, and that I wasn't sure if it was a reaction to the antibiotic, or something else. Every day I have woken up sweating from the fever, I'm sleeping horribly, and the aches in my head and behind my eyes are at times unbearable. I will take my last dose tomorrow morning, and hopefully all of the symptoms will start to disappear. I am generally a healthy person, and rarely even get a cold, but this drug has really done a number on me, I haven't not felt these types of symptoms all at once before.

I don't know where to begin; I have a text box in front of me that says "add a new side effect of the Mirena" but all I see are the same side effects over and over. That, in itself, speakes volumes. As for myself, it's been depression, weight gain, exhaustion and yet unable to sleep, pain down to my knees - of course all of these symptoms can be explained by everything else in the world - who, these days doesn't have money problems, stress, employment fragility, etc.? But I know myself, and this is wrong.
I had mine put in March 2009 and after a month I told my doctor I wanted it out. She said I didn't give it enough time (apparently six months is the magic number).
It's now been three months and getting out of bed is an act of heroism for me. Sex is out of the question (well, we have given it a go a couple of times and he can indeed feel the strings, contrary to what I was told - perhaps it's because he's - er - oh, never mind.)
I bleed erratically and it stinks; if I hadn't lost my sex drive already I'd be put off just by that.
I got the thing not for birth control but for pain and bleeding (not that it makes a difference)- it has made the pain worse, so I don't understand why I'm so nervous about asking my doctor (tomorrow - Monday) to have it removed?

Thank God for Google and these websites. I had the mirena placed in April of '08. I have and still have the severe cramping, the bleeding, the low libido. But as of Saturday a new symptom has arrived. I am having some bad anxiety. I am a very strong, super happy, loving person and have never had anxiety. And since Saturday it hasn't stopped. I have this absolutely awful feeling of dread. I called my doctor to set-up an appointment with a therapist as I am starting to really get scared that this won't ever go away. And then I started thinking and googled mirena side effects; just to have a look. And lo and behold, there are many of you with the same thing. You have NO IDEA how grateful I am to learn this. I truly thought I was going crazy or would have to be put on some medication. I made the appointment and this shit is coming out tomorrow morning!!! THANK YOU! If anyone could answer this question, how long until you felt "normal" again???

I started taking Loestrin 24 Fe two weeks ago today. I first accredited the bad period symptoms to just that, bad period symptoms, but after reading this, I realize it was the pill. I was paranoid and stressed out and cried three times, and for someone who's generally laid back and cries maybe twice a year, this was a little concerning. But, I'm willing to stay optimistic and chalk it up as being the first week on the pill to blame and not evidence of anything that will continue.
Yesterday, I had light spotting, but I assumed it was resultant from some rough sex my partner and I had had. Today when I wiped, there was a significant amount of dark blood and I've got cramps like I'm on my period. It's only been two weeks since my last one! I'm kinda freaked out and plan to call my doctor tomorrow morning to find out what's going on, but I'm assuming it's just an effect of the extra hormones that's got me jacked up. It's a little weird, though, since it resembles blood spotting I get halfway to late in my period week rather than the first day, because it's so dark.
Aside from the spotting, I've had a day where I had a horrible headache, but it was no worse or better than severe allergy migraines I've had in the past (it's fun being a severe allergy sufferer *snort, reassert glasses*.) I broke out along my jawline when I first started, but it was only slightly worse than what I normally get during my period. I haven't been bloated, but I do find that I have the munchies more often, so I'm working to control that to avoid weight gain. I have been a little moody and somewhat paranoid lately, but I think it's a combination of family stresses, finals, and basic worries that come with being in a new relationship.
It was mentioned earlier that the last four pills have iron in them, and it is important that you talk to your doctor or do a little diet research to determine whether or not it's even necessary because taking too much iron can be bad for you. They are there because during and around their periods, women generally are iron deficient, but if you are getting plenty of iron in your diet (especially if you take vitamins) you really don't need this extra dosage. That is, after all, what the Fe in the name is for, by the way. ;)
So, aside from seemingly having started a whole new period two weeks after my last one and having some mild mood swings and a single day of headaches, it hasn't been so bad. I had worse symptoms after taking ortho tri cyclen for three months. No pill is ever going to be completely symptom-free, so we must all keep that in mind.
I'll post when I find out more about this strange spotting deal.

Hello All,
I started taking the antibiotic and also had a "lump in the throat feeling" about 5 days after taking it. Like some other posters, the feeling started in the middle of the night and has persisted since. I think it may be GERD. Tomatoes and citrus certainly make it worse! I am going to try a diet of mild foods until the coarse is over.

Reading these posts has given me a HUGE sigh of relief. I am desperate to find something else and get the hell off of Aviane. I think I've been on it since at least 2002 or 2003. Like many of you...I'm irritable, angry, cry, hungry, moody...an emotional basket case!! I start PMS 2 weeks before my period begins. I can flucuate at least 3-5 lbs a month. This month has been the absolute worst. I forgot to take a pill (totally normal for me to forget). I have had cramps, bloating, 5 lb weight gain ( I am training for a 25k, there's no way it's fat!), and actually have had my period for 1 entire week! I can not take it any more and I have a doctors appointment at 10:45 tomorrow morning! I will not leave there until I have a new prescription and an explanation.
SEX DRIVE- I am writing this in caps to get your attention. I'm 27 years old, married 2 years to my husband who I have been with for 7 years. I am completely and madly in love with him but have no desire for sex. We fight about it every day, without fail. For so long I felt that I was a bad person. I have no explanation for not wanting to have sex. I don't want to get used to feeling this way. Our sex life sucks. I wish it was better but part of me doesn't care because I don't crave it. BUT- i did before, so I know there's something wrong. I won't settle for this feeling and I don't want my husband to feel this way anymore! I want to show him that I love him. I can't wait to get off Aviane!
Did I mention that i'm always tired? I'm constantly finding ways to increase my energy. From coffee to red bull, hydroxycut, spark, you name it. My energy levels are pretty high while I'm busy or working out...but the minute I stop, forget it...I'm OUT! It's gotten to the point where I've fought with my friends and family. Did anyone else fall asleep at 10:30 on New Years Eve??- I'm 27, I have no kids....problem? I think so..
The only constant in my life is AVIANE! Gee....ironic? I don't think so. Thank you to all the women that have posted their experience with Aviane. I have read so many of them. I also read a lot of them to my husband to reassure him that it has to be my birth control that is making me "asexual" and crazy! I look forward to visiting with my doctor, forcing her to change my birth control and finally, looking forward to starting a new life...I HOPE! I will be happy to respond to this forum to share my new experience....tbd!
Thanks again to all you other bloated, irritable, crazy, emotional basketcases that aren't having sex more than twice a week! Gotta love being a woman!

I am 21 years old and I've been taking Femcon Fe for almost a year now, before femcon I was taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. I switched over because I was having very bad break through bleeding. I wish I would have never started taking Femcon Fe, I have had the worst mood swings I've ever had since taking this pill. On top of having terrible mood swings I also get very nauseated when starting a new pack of pills at the beginning of each month. I am calling my Obgyn tomorrow morning so that I can switch to a different pill. I wasn't sure if femcon was what was causing these symptoms but after finding this site I don't think it would be smart to stay on this pill any longer.

After an ER trip where I discovered I was a hypo, I've been on Levoxyl 50 mcg for just under a month. I recently informed my doctor on the phone I was experiencing swelling directly under my chin after I took the medicine in the morning and it lasted all day. He told me to stop and come in and see him immediately. It's the weekend and I can't get in until Monday. It's the 2nd day I've been off the hormone and today I have numbness in my cheeks, they are swollen, I can't eat much and feel really depressed. I've been in pain for so long and now it's just getting worse. I don't know if I should take the hormone tomorrow morning to see if I feel better or stay off as advised by my doctor. Reading everyone's comments is helpful, as it's very difficult for my family and friends to relate to me during this time and seem to think I'm over-reacting all the time as the pain never goes away. Levoyxyl seems to make me feel better, but I still have a lot of back and neck pain, as well as sensitivity to light, headaches and jaw pain. I'm 215 on a 5'5 frame, I eat quite healthy, avoid all the trigger foods for the thyroid and try to be active, but I can't seem to loose weight. I'm really not sure what to do with myself and am loosing hope.. I'm 24 and feel like I'm 84.

Hello. So I got my Mirena put in August of 2008 thinking it was going to be a good idea and WAS I WRONG!!! I bled for 5 months and cramped the entire time. Sex was not good. I had an odor. Just last week I made an appointment with my OBGYN and she put me on some Sodium medicine to stop the bleeding and stop the cramping. Well the bleeding stopped but then I started to feel pregnant!! If I could post a picture of my stomach that I just took I would! I look 3-4 months pregnant! I was so scared that I took a pregnancy test just two days ago and it came out negative! So surely if I was really that far along it would be positive. I have a child and I was 7 weeks when I found out and it came right up positive! I do not recommend this to anyone. I have been crying about it because it has been making me miserable! I am calling first thing tomorrow morning to get it taking out after reading all of these messages of other women! Its horrible!

I had my Mirena put in on Oct 13th 2008 and since last Tuesday, 6th Jan 2009, I've been feeling extremely fatigued and nauseas. I've completely lost my appetite and right now I feel dizzy as I'm typing this post. I feel as if I'm about to keel over. I thought it might be a bout of food poisoning but since it's been lasting for the past 1 week, it can't be. I have 3 kids and the youngest is 11 months old but since I'm feeling fatigued all the time, I can't care for them.
During meal times, I can only look at my food and eat only a few mouthfuls. After eating, I feel like vomiting. I have all the symptoms of being pregnant but my tests came back negative. I've been suspecting that all these symptoms comes from the Mirena but my gynae assured me that there will be minimum side effects. I can barely keep my eyes open and I slept at 10.30pm and woke at 8am this morning and it's only 1pm now. At night, I fall asleep as soon as my head touches the pillow. When I need to wake up in the middle of the night, I feel nauseas and quickly stumble back to bed to stop the room from spinning. I never felt like that before.
The worst part is not being able to care for my children as I'm too exhausted all the time. My husband insists I go and see my gynae to have it taken out tomorrow morning.

I've been happily enjoying the freedom of Mirena since February 06. However over the last six months I've had chest pain, sometimes severe, and shortness of breath. Been to the lung doctor who was alarmed the pain was not in the chest wall. Just short of going for the chest x-ray I thought...hmm...I wonder if this is an IUD side effect. Sure enough, I should call my doctor immediately upon having this pain. Well, good to know. I'll be calling my doctor tomorrow morning.
I also am enlightened by all the severe anxiety reports - I thought I was going a bit nutty over the last six months with anxiety and panic attacks, sleeplessness and worry - but now I'm thinking my Mirena honeymoon is over. Almost three years of blissful birth control, with only crazzzzy side effects for the last six months. Try it, maybe it will work for you, but as you go along, check in with that nice long list of potential side effects, so you can choose wisely about what you're trading for your free love experiences...

I just called my OBGYN for my Mirena insertion date... January 2006. At my regular annual visit in December 2005, I weighed 167lbs... December 2006 - 173lbs... December 2007 - 175lbs... This December I will be in the 185lb range! I do not come from a 'fat' family and have never experienced such weight gain except when I had 2 courses of the Depo-Provera BC shots - then I gained almost 30lbs in 6 months. I am going to request the removal of the Mirena this December. I exercise and am not an over-eater. After reading this website, I can't wait to get rid of it! I don't have periods per se, but do experience PMS as if I did. I really haven't seen any increase in hair loss, but at 47-1/2 can't figure out all the acne. My sex drive (normally considered as exceptional) comes and goes like the tide. I have been experiencing a lot of headaches, but figured they were stress-related... maybe not. Thanks for the info & keep the lines open!

I am so glad I found this site, I have been on a emotional roller coaster. The insertion was the worst experience I have ever had and I had two c-sections! Right from the beginning I noticed I would have bad PMS symptoms, but after I stopped breastfeeding they got worse. I have been so depressed, I cry a lot and I don't want to be around anyone, I just want to stay home with my family all the time and normally we would be out having a good time. I have bad cramps and I have no energy, I use to workout 5x a week for a hour, but now it takes a lot just for me to go for a walk. I gained 12 pounds!! And my mood swings are out of control. I just talked to my mother and was telling her that something is not right with me, I don't feel myself, I told her I thought I was going crazy. She told me why don't you look up side effects of the IUD, because I didn't know what else to do, so I found this site and thank you all! I have a appointment tomorrow morning to get this thing out. Never again and I would tell anyone not to get the mirena.

Ok, so I go in tomorrow morning to have my Mirena removed. Can I just say...I have been looking through endless information and posts relating to each of them in one way or another...let me put my experience out there so others can use this information to their advantage.
I got pregnant 2 years ago..and it was not the time or the person for me, so I had an abortion. (I don't recommend it but Im sure there are other forums for that chapter of my life) I was on and off oral B/C and had all the horrible side effects you are warned about so stopped taking the pill and relied on my fabulous judgment and accessible Plan B pill to remedy my stupidity...unfortunately I convinced myself there was no way it could happen at that moment. So I fouled up BIG TIME...
Anyhow, after the abortion my public health nurse recommended the Mirena. Seemed like the answer...like we all thought. I was at my lowest body weight of my adult life. Lean and loving my body. Only less thing to worry about right. So, I got it inserted...I remember thinking that the nurse's comment of "You'll feel a little discomfort" as the largest understatement of my life. It hurt like a b*tch. I suddenly felt like I felt when I woke up from the abortion procedure.
I went about my life...working my daily job. 6 months after my insertion... One day while on the job I had a fall that involved my right hip. It hurt don't get me wrong...but I walked it off and in the next weeks the pain in my hip increased to the point that no amount of vicodin helped and I could barely walk.
I visited my chiropractor 2-3 times a week with some relief. But after a couple of months with no permanent fix I visited my general doctor. Who referred me to a bone and joint specialist. Week later I went in and they suggested that it sounded like a tear of the hip joint cartilage. So the next step was a MRI. At this point I had gained an easy 20 lbs...I am unable to go to the gym anymore because of the horrible pain that is deep in the crease of my leg...like deep to the pelvic bone...and aching into the hip joint...like I imagined sand or something sprinkled on the ball joint of my hip. Radiating pain clear down to my right knee along what I can only call my siatic (sp?) nerve. I was in tears every time a doctor told me they didn't know what was wrong with me...so when it sounded like he knew I teared up with joy. ---
RESULTS OF MRI....nothing wrong with my joint, no tears in tissue...nothing. What in the HELL!!!The bone doctor refers me to the ObGYN...
OBGyn treats me for a possible underlying infection....and sends me for an ultrasound...which reveals a large cyst...nothing to be alarmed about but the cyst "May be putting pressure on my uterus and the pain in the hip could be effected by it also" But cysts as we all know take care of themselves normally...so they tell me to finish the antibiotics and come back in 2 weeks....
2 weeks later..cysts are normal sized...and pain is still very apparent. I always had horrible cramping...so the ongoing cramping after the Mirena insert didn't alarm me. But the ongoing...like 95% of the time cramping was getting on my last nerve coupled with my hip pain, weight pain and countless other seemingly unrelated problems.
So, all this led me kinda to a turning point...with no health insurance I couldn't keep frequently DR.s that had no answers...or didn't ever once suggest that my MIRENA could be the problem. So, I googled...found all this information...and gave up with trying to treat mystery pains and made the appointment to get it removed...LORD HELP ME if this doesn't help me get my body back pain free and back into my 6's

I'm on day 22 of taking this darn pill. I haven't been on bc for almost 3 years and the only reason I am taking it now is because my doctor has me trying it for 2 months because of ovarian cysts causing stomach discomfort. For the past week and a half I've have intolerable headaches that seem to be increasingly worse. For the past 4 days I have started to have horrible lower back pain and I have been told this weekend that I have been biting everyones heads off for no reason. I still have stomach pain. I snap at everyone just out of the blue. I started spotting brown discharge in day 21 and I am so not feeling right. I'm glad I finally decided to look up this pill and read everyones comments. First thing tomorrow morning I will be making a phone call to my doctor.
