Hi there I had a total thyroidectomy on April 14th and started synthroid 125 mg daily basically since a week after. I felt great for a few weeks then The past week my tongue has been getting increasing swollen, and sore, because I am biting, it also noticed some jaw clenching, The on call doctor told me to stop it but didn’t think it was an allergy to synthroid I have read several online blogs of other people who experienced the same thing of synthroid what do u think it is? I also tend to burn easily, my skin is extremely sensitive to any chemicals, now as well.
i have also gained 10 lbs, ...

I was prescribed this drug in hopes of keeping thyroid nodules and goiter from growing larger. My TSH levels have always been in the normal range throughout my life, so the theory that "normal TSH' means a working, normal thyroid is absolutely untrue. I am a prime example of a person who's numbers have always remained normal and yet their thyroid does not work properly. I have decided to discontinue this drug after 3 months of use. The weight is packing on faster than I can diet and exercise it off. My face is puffy, my stomach bloated and looking pregnant, and now retaining water. Anyone who does not believe that Synthroid causes weight gain, I welcome you to try this drug. It does the exact thing it claims it is combating. I am not hypo with levels of 1.07 and yet something odd is occurring within my body with this synthroid. I'm praying that if I stop the drug I might return to some form of normalcy soon.

I have had a total thyroidectomy due to thyroid carcinoma about 2.5 -3 years ago. I have been on synthroid and levoxyl and both have caused tingling and numbness in my hands and feet, what I call a general fog (hard to concentrate or think, sometimes talk). I have been tested for neuropathy since endo said radiation may have caused issues. Only to be cleared by neurologist. Now endo switched does lower after rebout of cancer from 300mcg to 274mcg and have knee joints now going numb I want to sleep all the time, general weakness and now low testosterone levels.

Had total thyroidectomy 9 months ago and started taking Synthroid immediately thereafter. For the last 4 months I have noticed significant hair thinning. I have always had very thick, healthly looking hair but now it's just dry and brittle all of the time. I always feel tired and bloated around my stomach area in particular. I have always been a size 4-6 but have inexplicably gained 6 pounds in the last month. Is there an alternative to snythroid without these side effects?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April of this year (2007) kind of by accident through a routine checkup. I had gained a bit of weight over the past two years, but that was really my only symptom. I was begun on 75 mcg of a generic brand of Synthroid, levothyroxine. Since I began this medication, I have rapidly gained another 15 pounds despite a 1,000 calorie per day diet. I retain fluid horribly. My ankles, wrists, hands and face swell daily. My muscles ache, especially my legs, upon walking across a room. I'm fatigued, short of breath. My LDL cholesterol level has skyrocketed in only three months and now I'm being told I need to be on a statin drug. I cry frequently and feel uncharacteristically anxious and irritable, but this could be due to the frustration I am experiencing with the loss of my sense of well-being. In essence, I felt much better before being placed on the medication. I may, in fact, discontinue the medication totally and see if over time I begin to feel better. Like so many other stories I'm hearing, my doctor seems totally unconcerned.

I have Grave's disease which effects your thyroid. I got radiation therapy for my hyperthyoidism. My numbers are still hyper and I'm taking Topral. I take 25 MG in the morning and 25 Mg at night. I have gained 8 lb's in 3 wk's.If you are familar with hyperthyroid, I should be losing weight. My face and ankles are puffy and my legs are crampy. I'm going to ck into other beta blockers until my thyroid gets regulated.

I had a total thyroidectomy last year...long story short, after about 4 months my surgeon said the scar was turning into a keloid ( I now wish I would have just left it alone) So he recommended kenalog injections. I had 3 total over a 3 month period. After a few months the scar had severly indented & it looks horrible...when I swallow it looks like my throat is mangled inside. I hate it & I don't think there is anything I can do about it. I wish I would have been advised about the possible side effects!!! I can 't stand that people stare at my neck when I talk to them...it's very depressing. Not to be so vain, but I'm a young woman!!!

I have began Levo .1 and started having heart palpitations , chronic anxiety, and diarrhea, bloating miserable. I lowered the dose to 0.50 and still continue to experience the palps. I went to the doctor at urgent care yesterday and we decide to lower the levo to 0.025 in the am and 0.025 in the pm to see if that helps for a while. Hears hoping that it works. The side effects on here are terrible. I hope that mine go away after I get adjusted to the dose or quit it all together. It is harad denoughg to deal with a total thyroidectomy then a RAI 131 treatment now this crap! It makes you wonder if you are ever gonna feel normal again?

I'm 35 yr female now with Hypothyroid. Had surgery on 12/22/04 to have a total thyroidectomy to remove papillary carcinoma. I have to waite for my radiation treatment until March 2005 (UPSET!!!) The doctor has put me on Cytomel 50MCG once a day, until my radiation can be done.
Not sure of the side effects yet, this will be my 3rd on the medication. A little scare right now, not sure or how long it will take to get into my system. But I have had a slight headache and sweating at night for the last two nights.

Does anyone here ever had any tingling issues? I had total thyroidectomy in Feb. 2009. Felt good the first month or two and have gone down from there! Some days are good, some are bad. Never know from day to day how Im going to feel! I started out for about a month and a 1/2 on 125 levothyroxin.....then my doc lowered it to 100.......as of July 14th, Im now taking .88. The tingling Im getting is all over my body, different places, here and there. Ive had some heart rate issues for a couple of months now too and finally had my regular doc send to me see a heart doctor.
-- By lubblady38 | Reply | (3) replies | Private Message meThought maybe the tingling could be from low calcium.....it was normal, CBC was normal, ECHO was normal.....waiting on the holter test results right now. The heart doc gave me a prescription for Toprol. I told him I wasn't going to take it cuz sometimes my heart feels like its barely beating and Im afraid it will make it worse. Im glad I didn't get it! Ive read of too many side effects.
Palpitations, kinda fast heart beat with pounding.....sometimes it feels likes its barely beating! Most of this occurs when first laying down......every now and then while sitting, etc. I do not exercise.....and should but just don't find the time. I switched jobs around the time I found out I had several nodes on each side of my thyroid. I was getting tired a lot and just thought i worked too much. I went from a physical job to a sit down, 12 hour, graveyard shift. Since the surgery, Ive felt it more. Im tired of feeling like crap all the time......I was already going thru some perimenopause stuff before all of this! Before I ever found out about my thyroid, I did have real light pounding of heart when laying down and tingling every blue moon, but very mild as well.
Now with no thyroid.......and medicines with all the side effects......IM GOING NUTS!!! Right now the moodiness and tingling are whats bothering me the most. Some days Im really tired, others Im ok. My body gets hot off and on, no fever. The past 3 days my calves, feet, and ankles have started to swell........never before! Plus I get some throbs and pains in my legs and arms and under my arms here and there. I probably need a new doc and I change of medicine......but Im afraid.
For one, Ive decided to go back to a physical job........and hopefully it wont screw with my heart rate even more. Ive read up on tingling........Im guessing maybe its from all the damn stress since my calcium was normal. Does anyone here have any suggestions?????
