My son is 8 and for the past 3 years has been on Singular for seasonal allergies. He has since been diagnose with asthma and he takes Singular daily. After being on it for 3 weeks he is now getting into trouble in school. The teachers say it was like a light switch being turned on. Completely out of character behavior. My question is this......has anyone experienced hyperactivity behavior on Singular?

I have a grandson who is on singulair since he would walk. He is now 5 years old. He has trouble in school, heat racing, out of control tantrums, biting and hiting in daycare. When he is not taking this medicine he is a different child. Parents are doing what ever the physicians order. Please stop prescribing medicines just for a runny nose, it is not worth the side effects.

my 8 year old son was taking singulair and zyrtec for 6 years. I forgot to give him his medicine for a couple of days and noticed how mellow he was. I started thinking about it and realized that it might be the medicine. He was 2 when he started taking singulair and zyrtec so i thought this was just how a boy was supposed to act like, i have four daughters too. He has always had trouble in school just barely passing each grade, his teachers all told me to have him tested for adhd and i knew in my heart he did not have that. the last few months have been really bad with his attitude, yelling, wining, hitting his sisters, and talking back to me like i am a piece of crap. I am so glad i forgot to give him his medicine, he does not take anything anymore. I hope that when all the medicine is out of his system he will be even better.

I wrote an earlier post but I am now reading alot of your posts where you say your child experienced FEAR on Singulair. That is so interesting. When my son was on it for around 3 years he would never sleep alone in his own bed and he would have episodes every night that would last up to 3 hours at bed time because I would try to get him to sleep in his own bed, even at 8 years old. I thought he was possessed!!!! He would scream and fight me and I would literally have to hold him down to get him to stay in bed. It was horrible. I'm not sure how a hullicination would be described but maybe that was part of it. All I know is that he turned into a totally different child. It was something out of a horror movie. I eventually gave up and let him sleep in our bed cause it was exhausting. He would just make blood curdling screams and the terror in his eyes was horrific. Then the next morning he would be fine like nothing had ever happened.
Now that he is off of Singulair he will sleep in his own bed with the light off all night. It was an amazing turn around. He also told me he's not scarred anymore.. Who knew????? Has anyone else experienced anything like that with their child????

My daughter has been on singulair since age 3. I can't believe all the side affects that other children are having on the medicine to. This answers so many questions for me. We have been battling with leg cramps, stomache pain, bedwetting and weight gain. My daughter instantly gained weight over night and is constantly hungry, I never could understand why and I have taken her to a gastrenologist and he never had a answer either. We went to a ENT for constant sinus infections. I had her tonsils removed and seems to be doing better. I definetly will be taking her off the medicine immediatly. She also has been having trouble in school, I wish I would have known about this sooner. I feel terrible about having her on this medicine all these years wich has caused nothing but pain and alot of doctor and hospital visits!!!!!!!!

my son is 9 and has been on SINGULAIR since he was about 5 for bad asthma and allergies. he has had trouble in school since he started, we thought it was ADD. he started having constant stomach aches and headaches. we started seeing a counselor because he would say things like "I hate my life" and "I don't want to live anymore" thats when he was 6. he had many other issues like hallucinations, night terrors, bed wetting, anger problems, depression, trouble focusing at school, mood swings, emotional ups and downs, just to name a few. we have been to pediatricians and psychiatrists and no one mentioned ever that it could possibly be the singular. we have added other medications like most parents, for ADD which made him worse. about 1 year ago he was diagnosed with bi-polar and was prescribed Abilify, an anti-psychotic. he has since gotten somewhat better but I never connected the Singulair side effects to his symptoms. (note: bi-polar symptoms in children are strikingly similar to bad side effects of Singulair) maybe he doesn't even have bi-polar! maybe he was more subject to having these side effects because of underlying problems. I have stopped giving him the the Singulair a few days ago but i don't see a significant change, yet. Its a very sad thing that parents like myself have so much trust in our doctors that we give our children these medications before we know anything about them. I myself will never make that mistake again and my prayers go out to all those who have made the same mistakes.

My son is 10 years old and has severe allergies and asthma. He was hospitalized when he was 5 for asthma and at that time put on Flovent 110 mg twice in the morning and twice at night for awhile this seemed to work around the age of 7 he was put on Singular 5 mg to help with asthma and also his allergies. After a short period of time he began to complain of stomach pain he would get nauseated and sick with a 10 minute car ride, we took him in to the pediatrician and was told that there was no obvious cause and to basically deal with it. Around this same time he also began to have trouble in school he was not able to pay attention and was falling far behind we tried tutoring, extended day classes anything to keep him up with his other classmates. Needless to say all our efforts did not work and he got worse he was now moody and withdrawn. We thought it was his frustration with school that made him short tempered and emotional. At every parent-teacher conference it was the same report; being told how bright our child could be but his lack of focus and emotional state prevented this. My husband and I decided that we needed to be proactive and made an appointment with the pediatrician again we discussed all the issues and told the pediatrician that his mood has changed and he could not focus that homework was a battle each night usually resulting in a major meltdown. The pediatrician diagnosed my son with ADHD with ODD. Never would I have thought that my child with have behavioral or anger problems and I had a hard time coping with the idea at first but tried to make it okay for my son I did not want to make him feel like he did something wrong or that he was broken. The pediatrician prescribed Adderrall 5 mg at first and after three months we revisited and the dose was adjusted to 10 mg. School made a dramatic turn around and we were hopeful, however his mood was still all over the place he would get angry over small things, have a meltdown, and at some points would just wake up in a fowl mood and when asked what was wrong he could not explain it he just was not happy with anything. In the background of all of this was his asthma he was hospitalized again in when he was 8 after being discharged he was put on Zyrtec as well. So now his meds were Flovent 110 mg, Singular 5 mg, and now Zyrtec 10 mg. It was all overwhelming for all of us but we were trying to make it okay for him. He began to complain of restless nights, headaches and would get dizzy for no reason. Here we go again back to the doctor they attributed everything to the Adderrall. He passed out one day at daycare and we rushed him to the ER they did an EKG and found nothing and told us he was probably dehydrated. He constantly had a fowl smell coming from his mouth we asked his dentist they found nothing no cavities we asked the pediatrician no reason; no matter what we tried we could not get ride of it and he brushed, flossed and rinsed with mouthwash everyday three times a day. I was not making any connection on the side effects I guess you could say the left hand was not talking to the right. After we had wildfires that burned almost the entire city he had another asthma attack that lead us to the ER again after being treated we were assigned to a pediatric pulmonologist that added Nasonex to the regiment. Then in January we had him tested to learn what exactly his allergies were and was advised they wanted him to come in for allergy shots one in each arm once a week. In March 2008 we went in for his first set of allergy shots and right after had an appointment with his pulmonaligist he had a bad reaction to the shots and they changed his meds again. Now he is on Advair 250/50, Singular 5 mg, Zyrtec 10 mg, Nasonex, and Adderrall 10 mg. We decided to hold off on the allergy shots until he can better tolerate it. This entire time there has been little improvement on his attitude and he is withdrawn and seems disconnected now. When we try to talk to him he simply says he doesn't know what is wrong. It is all a roller coaster ride. Then on March 26, 2008 it all changed for me, I had put the kids in bed as normal and about an hours later heard someone up and in the bathroom I went to go check to make sure no one was sick and found my son in the bathroom and it appeared he was washing his hands and I asked if he was okay. He told me he was washing a cut, I looked at it and asked what happened he was hesitant and then pointed to his arms; he had bitten up and down both arms and on his hands to the point of bleeding I was shocked and did not really know what to say. We talked about it and he told me he could not control himself and even when he wanted to stop biting himself because it hurt could not resist the urge to to it over and over again. We talked calmly and after a long conversation he told me he needed to talk to someone about his problems. The next morning I called the pediatrician he said he could see him on March 30, 2008. On March 29th I heard about the side effects of Singular and was so shocked and angry how come no one told me what this could do to my baby; I wondered if he had never started this stupid drug if he would have been put on Adderrall. I would not let him take Singular that night or any night after. I will never let my son take this drug ever again. The following day I took him in for his appointment and after discussing everything the pediatrician agreed that it is best to leave him off Singular. I am taking my son to see a child physiologist as well. I am so upset that I did not make the connection myself.

I have a 10 year old daughter who took Singulair from age 3 until this past November. She has severe asthma/allergies. When she was 6 the night terrors started I informed the pediatrician of this, but they said she probably had sleep apnea. Her concentration level kept her in trouble in school. I never considered that it might be the Singulair. She developed a speech problem and the school speech teacher referred us to a speech pathologist because they thought she might have vocal fold dysfunction. Several specialists later, we wound up at an allergist's office who IMMEDIATELY took her off of Singulair stating that it was a dangerous drug and should have never been prescribed to her.

Her health has IMPROVED off of the singulair and we are doing allergy shots and symbacort with allegra. I wish I could have saved her the emotional roller coaster ride - all because of this drug.

I have chosen to take our son off singulair his behavior has turned around for the better already. I am married to a Pulmonary adult doctor and all his training was to put our son on this medicine .Our son is four almost five in July he was a premature baby bore at 26 weeks do October 4th so he has under developed lungs. I cant express how much singulair has give us so much pain and joy it was bitter sweet with this medicine he had no asthma from a cold . However the headaches , night sweats, aggressive behavior, mood swings were out of control it was like giving him the medicine to breathe right was just killing him. I wish this was not the case however it is I read the news story on the suicide and I fear that it could definitely have been a product of this medicine I am so sorry for everyone who has a child with asthma. Good luck on everyones decision to not take this medicine anymore its a very hard choice but you all no in your heart it's an easy one. NO MORE SINGULAIR.

My 9 year old daughter has been on sigulair since she was 5. She just recently started having trouble with concentration and behavior. She is always sad and cries alot .She is an honor/gt student but just recently has been having trouble with her school work. She has also begun to hurt her brother and talks about how she wishes she was dead.We are really concerned and she began counseling. Our son was on Zyrtec for 3 years, we just took him off and went a homeopathic route for his allergies. While on zyrtec, he was so emotional, had trouble in school, cried a ton and was overall a mess! A few days after we changed his meds, he was a DIFFERENT person for the better!

I took Yutopar from week 32 to week 36 when pregnant with Daughter #1, who was born at 37 1/2 weeks. Effects on me: heart pounding, couldn't sleep.
She is now 18
She has suffered from: never consolidating a nights sleep, then daily night terrors from age 5 until medicated at age 8, sleep screaming, sleep walking, rages, ODD. Refusal to go to camp. late to walk, ride bike, fear of stairs. also is very bright (verbal and math theory); teen years-- depressed, conduct disorder, but also can perform in plays and musicals. Treated with various ssris and norephenphrin and dopamine managers, with some effect, but not success. other symptoms are appearing--pathological lying. fails in school due to inability to function. Has ceased having fun.
Daughter #2: preterm labor (due to fibroids) treated with ehelated Magnesium supplements. Baby was a calm sleeper and an easily habituated baby, also very bright and sensate, but no problematic, out-of-range-behaviors.
Where are studies of evey child treated in utero with this drug???

my daughter was prescribed singulair at 3 years old after several visits to the ER. her asthma was controlled immediately, but her behavior changed too. she is now 6 (singulair dose upped to 5mg) and has slowly transformed from an intelligent, happy, fearless, excited child to someone who was having trouble in school concentrating, depression, scared of everything, tummy aches, heart palpataions, chronic sinusitis.

we went through several tests from cystic fibrosis to blood work for white blood count and also chrones testing because of the constant stomach irritation and cramping. i finally looked up side effects to singulair two weeks ago...read all of this and took her off of it, and off of zyrtec (please look up zyrtec...BAD STUFF) she is slowly back to her old self but absolutely not angry, depressed, and crying all the time!!!!! just had teacher conferences and her teachers were shocked at her personality switch. they were floored at her drive for learning and her attitude adjustment. they wanted to know what had changed so rapidly!!!!

she still takes advair 100 and i now have her on a heavy dose of vitamins/minerals (including quercitin, omega oil, vitamin a, vitamin c, etc.) recommended in a pediatric asthma health cures book i read. we are working toward a balance in controlling behavior and asthma and i hope to god this works. it is so nice to have my happy daughter back!!!

please, if anyone knows about other successful homeopathic approaches please let me know.

My son has been on AdderallXR since he was 13, He is now 15. He's a Great wrestler,FootBall Player and Pitcher and theres no way he could stay out of trouble in school without the meds, much less keep his grades up to play his sports! However, I feel the medicine makes him kinda sluggish at times and it's keeping him from growing like he's suppose to.You know what do you do?Gotta have the Educ....Schol...

I had three pregnancies-gainesd same weight, carried them all the same-all uncomplicated births. Only difference is with my second-I was on Yutopar from 20 weeks to 35 weeks. This child is battling with ADD/depression, personality disorders/ addictions. Any link between these problems and Yutopar?
