I was prescribed Doxycycline by the Student Health Center at my college for alleged Bronchitis. I've been taking 100mg twice daily, and I definitely noticed the intense nausea immediately. I've always had a strong stomach, so I was a bit surprised by how I reacted to it. Luckily no vomiting. But within 2 days, I noticed that my vaginal area was incredibly irritated, itchy, and red. I thought it was just random irritation, but it has persisted for three days, and I finally realized it wasn't a temporary thing. I've never had a yeast infection before, so I spent an afternoon researching them, and was terrified that it was a symptom of an STD (even though I'm well educated on the subject).
In my research, I somehow stumbled upon the name of this drug, and immediately searched for further side effects (since my doctor only told me to take water and food with it, avoid sunlight, and not to lie down within 1/2 an hour of taking it). What do you know, but yay yeast infections.
Basically, I'm furious with my practitioner for not warning me about all of the things I've read on this site. I've stopped taking the medicine and have no problem with dealing with a cough if it means the yeast infection goes away. I'm never taking this drug again.

I am 29 years old, I have been taking Adderall XR for about a year and a half. It wasn't working too well until recently. Note that stress depletes the nesessary brain neurotransmitters necessary for focus, and optimal functioning. The very first time I took Adderall, I was taking 15mg and the night before, I had the proper amount of sleep which is about 7-8 hours. It worked very well. I woke up at I think, about 8AM, and the medication started helping me focus in approximately two hours later. But unfortunately that day, I had just received some very depressing news. The next day, the medication did not work properly again until now. I'm assuming the stress from this news depleted my brain's natural chemicals and did a number on me. On the other hand, if I had not of experienced that bad stuff, and I was going to school or work on a regular basis, my symptoms of AD/HD would of been a lot less and that Adderall would have consistantly worked. These medications are much more effective when taken properly, when you sleep well at night, exercise helps, and when there is very minimal stress in your life.
Since this August I have been seeing a specialist, a psychiatrist who specializes in AD/HD. Before August, I was taking 20mg of Adderall XR and 20mg of Prozac every other day. Today I've had Adderall increased to 30mg. So now I take 30mg of Adderall XR, 150mg of Wellbutrin XL and 20mg of Prozac every third day. Today I seem to be more focused, more energy, less procrastination, and less figiting.
Also, I would like to comment on the fact that for that 21 year old who was prescribed a lot of Adderall to start with----- 20mg of Adderall twice daily-- I believe that is too much. If I were her, I would of either started with 5 or 10mg of Adderall or even start with 10mg of Dexedrine instead. Before I took Adderall, I had been taking Dexedrine ever since I was 17 years old. I had been taking Dexedrine on-and-off. I think I started with 10mg of Dexedrine and 20mg of Prozac. My psychiatrist then, told me we would start the Prozac also because Dexedrine sometimes has the tendency to give people a bit of nervousness. So the next day, I knew Dexedrine was a miracle drug because I could actually listen to what the teacher was saying, study, learn, focus, keep info. in my brain and have conversations with people, without forgetting what I was about to say! It was amazing. From that point on, I knew that I had a brain and in that brain there was actually a high level of intelligence. Before the meds, I had always thought I was dumb.
It is also my opinion that in combination with medication, people with AD/HD should see a counselor or AD/HD couch to help them with their planning in life, goal setting, follow-through and to just sort of push them along positively.
So good luck everyone.....If anyone with ADD or AD/HD has had simular experiences or wants to chat, e-mail me or leave a message on this post.

I was prescribed labetalol during my last pregnancy because my blood pressure started elevating, I was prescribed 100 mg twice daily, and when I started taking it got terrible breast pain, I knew it was the medication because it happened exactly 30 minutes after each dose and not when I didn't take it. I discovered I could eventually get used to it if I went way back to a lower dose 25 mg twice daily and titrated up. So I had to split the pills in 1/4. But it helped a lot.

We found this medication to be largely ineffective, too mild to have an effect om symptoms. My daughter was diagnosed with strep, and takes Claritin daily for allergy symptoms. On top of the strep, she had a nearly non-stop cough. Prescription stated 1 tsp twice daily. On first night of use, we gave 2 tsp and had zero improvement in symptoms. After two hours, gave another 2 tsp (4 total), and again, had zero improvement in symptoms. Following night, abandoned this med, and used individual meds instead of this combo. Used Benadryl to replace antihist, used much cough suppressant individually, but did used same decongestant slightly higher amount. Also, supplemented with Tylenol. Everyone slept on the second night.

I had a stye/ staff infection in my right eye. It was swollen and severely hurting me. Well, my doctor put me on sulfameth and a eyedrop antibiotic. I don't mind taking the eye drops, but these pills are making me feel horrible. I am on 1 pill twice daily for 10 days. I asked the doctor and the pharmacist if this stuff causes constipation and they both said no. Well, I haven't been able to use the bathroom well since I started it. My muscles twitch, my eyes are sensitive to the sunlight, I can't go to sleep easily, I've been itching up a storm, and I have headaches. I want to just stop the medication but if I do then I will never get rid of this infection in my eye. I figured I'd stop the meds in the middle of the week. I hate feeling bloated and constipated. Has anyone else had the constipation effect?

I have been using Advair 250/50 for about a month now. I couldn't figure out why I kept having to clear my throat...and it doesn't help. I know I don't like the feeling and after reading other responses regarding Advair, I will contact my doctor. I actually decreased my initial dosage. I was supposed to use it twice daily, but I had muscle tremors after two doses.

I have posted several times, first my side effects from Levaquin, which have been horrible muscle, joint and tendon aches. My other two posts have been inquiries as to how long the side effects last and if there was anything that could be done to hlep rid them. It has been over an month and a half since I stopped taking the medication and my symptoms have subsided, somewhat. One day I think I am making real progress, the next I feel the effects, but am not hurting as bad as I was even a week ago. One of the frustrations is that doctors don't seem to know what to do - my pharmacist was familiar with the side effects and said that it has to "work itself out of your system" - the prescribing doctor said he has heard of people over 60, who had taken Levaquin, have achilles tendon tears (how bad is that!), but most doctors seem to think you are making the side effects up definitely don't offer any solutions. What I have done, is go to a very good health food store and they had me take A.M. and P.M. Zyflamend, an ionic liquid magnessium and a liquid cal/mag/zinc dose. I have also started taking the "odorless" 1200 mg fish oil twice daily. I don't know if this has all helped me to feel better, or if it is coincidence with the side effects running their course. I am still not back to 100%, but at least I am feeling better. This is such a frustrating, painful experience that no one should have to go through from taking an antibiotic. Why this medication is still on the market is a mystery to me. Can only be attributed to "big pharmaceutical" money. For those suffering, the above health food recommendations might be worth a try. If anyone else has some good suggestions for eliminating the side effects, please post!!

After being hospitalized for 10 days back in November, I was finally diagnosed with a fairly rare autoimmune disease. Treatment included 60mg Prednisone daily along with weekly infusions and other meds. I am now down to 20mg daily and dosage for other meds remain at the same levels as in November.
I am uncertain if the following were side effects of Prednisone or because I had lost over 25 pounds and was totally exhausted before going into the hospital.
While I was on the 60mg dosage, however, I was unable to concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes. I was extremely forgetful. It was often good for a hearty laught, but sentances and words constantly came out of my mouth backwards or made no sense (like I'd say "Didn't that happen tomorrow?"). I had frequent headaches. I was tired most of the time and slept a l-o-t, but when extremely tired, I'd break down in tears over nothing at all. I developed severe stomach problems, but that was alleviated by taking Nexium twice daily.
Now on the current lower dosage and after gaining back half the weight I had lost, the "side effects" noted above have either disappeared or occur far less frequently and I've not developed any "new" ones, except that my face has besome puffy within the past week or so. My ability to think and concentrate for long periods has greatly improved, but I'm still not as alert and do not react as fast as before I was hospitalized.
Hopefully, these, too, will be back to normal once I'm off all the meds. I'm uncertain just when that is expected to occur but I'm sure that depends on whether I experience any flare-ups or not.
I'm also curious - Does anyone know if any side effects can occur several months or years after Prednisone has been discontinued?

My 7 1/2 mth old daughter was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection. She has been on another Cephalasporin based drug before but with this one she has had episodes of vomiting (approx 1 1/2 hr after receiving the medication) as well as bright orange/red loose stools. After doing some reading it says that the red stools can sometimes be caused by a reaction with iron supplements - the same that she has in her formula but I'm more concerned over the diarrhea mainly because both my husband and I are working full-time and I can't take her to child care with the diarrhea but we can't afford to stay home for the 10 day course. Of course Lizzy is receiving the medicaiton once daily and although I haven't spoken to her Dr. yet (I'm calling tomorrow( I'm wondering if we should split the dose into twice daily. Otherwise she still seems happy and bright. Eating okay and interacting normally. I guess I'll see what the doctor says tomorrow

I am taking Topomax for migraines. I always start everything at a really LOW dose since I have a lot of probs with side effects. Started at 15 mg and went right away to 30mg (15mg twice daily) the second week because I was dying from headaches. The other antidepressants prescribed for constant daily headache prevention all of a sudden weren't working. I didn't want to take my abortive med for migraines every day (Amerge) so I was curious if Topomax might help my daily headache pain. Possibly my daily headaches had become migraines... so hard to tell one from the other anymore. I teach exercise for a living and so much of my headache pain is exercise induced. I found that while on topomax, all of a sudden 2 Advil would take away a headache I would get after exercising which never happened before. I would take two Advil before doing some of my hardest exercise to prevent a headache and for the most part that worked too... and that never worked before. I had tried all kinds of NSAID's before and after exercise at the advice of my neurologist to no avail. I did have one diffuse headache yesterday that might have been a true migraine and I took Amerge because Advil didn't help. I have been on the 30 mg two week now. But, now the downside. Since on the 30mg I feel like my chest is heavy a lot of time when I do water exercise... I am exhausted a lot doing my usual routines... I feel edgy, can't sleep well at night. I HAVE to have a two hour nap after teaching in the morning or I can't function mentally or physically. I sleep well for that nap time. Seems like I have thermoregulation problems. I teach water exercise and if the water is a little cold it bothers me and it never used to. Then in the pool awhile I feel hot. Same when I sleep.. I need a lot of covers, then I throw them off. Then they are on again. No I am not menopausal yet. My brain is hazy on topomax as well. I take bellydance lessons and sometimes I realize I can't remember what my teacher just told me. Now people reading this, don't think that just because this happens to me, it will happen to you. I know people who LOVE topomax with zero side effects. They don't tend to write in to posting boards. Also, sometimes side effects go away. Be patient if you want to give topomax a shot. I am thinking I am going to go back to 15 mg again... and see how I tolerate that. Because I teach exercise, the hardest thing is to feel the heaviness in the chest and the lack of ambition. This is not me. It is great not to have the headache pain, but I don't know if this is the drug for me. I was excited about the "losing weight " side effect , and I could see how skinny people who lose their appetite easily might be affected, but it takes a lot to stop me from eating LOL darn! I did read in another chat some poor chap had sinisitis for months and took TONS of antibiotics before finding out Topomax gives sinisitis type side effects in a small amount of people. So if you get sinisitis, don't take antibiotics before checking out if topomax is the culprit.
My heart goes out to every person out there trying to find the magic bullet for their headache, siezures, whatever... ADVICE.. .start with SMALL doses... you may be able to get used to side effects if you work up slowly in ALL drugs. In many drugs that didn't come in small doses, I took out 3/4 of what was inside just to get a mini dose. Ask your doc if you can mix one capsule or one pounded up tab of your med with juice and store it in the referigerator. You can drink say 1/8 cup a day of the juice to get 1/8 of a capsule. It is a lot easier than chopping up a tab into eighths. Also ask your doc about childrens doses that come in liquids with droppers. Topomax makes taking smaller doses easy with the sprinkles.. you are encouraged to open the capsule and sprinkle as little as you want on food. Good luck all. L.

Mental meds are destroying our bodys and minds.. I would reccomend to any one going on marijuana, smoked once or twice daily and tramadol/Ultram for spot relief of depression and anxiety. The marijuana WILL help you if you are bipolar or schizophrenic or just depressed. I have noticed that it can sometimes help or hurt anxiety which i have a big problem with.. I choose to just spot treat with tramadol or xanax.. both have potential for addiction but who the hell cares? there not going to leave you dead or dying like like seroquel and other like drugs.
Don't let your doctor kill you.. THE FDA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND...
It's time we all realize that and stop being there lab rats. You only get one body, one life.. do what ever you have to do to live it.. thats my 5 cents :)

I am also currently taking doxycyline as a preventative measure because my boyfriend had NGU. I am taking 100mg twice daily. I experienced very mild nausea, I felt very bloated and had extreme gas. You just feel very heavy when taking this medication. I felt full all the time and my stomache was semi hard and when I put pressure on it, it caused burping and farting... sorry to be so graphic :)

I took 100mg of Doxycycline twice daily for suspected Epididymitis. The first few days I followed the instuctions and didn't notice any side effects. One night though I woke up with incredibly painful heartburn. I think I may have taken the pill without enough water right before bed. After that I continued to take the pills and the side effects started to become worse. I had headaches, dizziness, loss of appeitite, and painful heartburn. My advice to anyone taking this medicine would be to follow the instructions and not take the pill right before sleeping. It has been two days since I stopped taking Doxycycline and the side effects still have not subsided.

My teenage daughter has been taking Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for about 2 weeks now. Today we spent the day on the beach. She is experiencing tingling in her hands, arms, feet, and lips. She was also experiencing burning sensations with her arms, lips, face, and feet. Now that she is inside and out of the sun the burning sensation has subsided. The tingling remains.

I have been prescribed Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for suspected Lyme disease. I have never experienced such strong side effects from taking an antibiotic before! The morning dose is the worst by far for me. It makes me feel incredibly nauseous and it makes me feel hot with stomach pains. I feel like being sick all the time for about 3-4 hours after taking it - I have tried lots of water and food but I still feel like crap! After about 4 hours I start to feel a little better then I feel like eating lots and lots!!! My body just seems to be swinging from feeling like I am dying to being very hungry hours later... I take the last pill about 10pm and stay downstairs for about a hour before I go to bed - strangely enough though I have never felt ill like I do in the morning and go to sleep ok. All very weird and I cant wait until I have finished taking this drug (14 day course and I am half way through)

I was diagnosed with asma last year, and was prescribed Advair. It works amazingly on my breathing difficulties when jogging, and I really can't breath easily when I run without using it twice daily. One noticable side affect though, is that I have gained 20 pounds since starting the medication without altering my eating or exercise habits.

I started taking Doxycycline five days ago for adult acne (I'm 30 and experiencing hormonal side effects from coming off DepoProvera after one year). I was prescribed 100 mg twice daily. My evening pill is okay, I take it right before bed. But when I take the pill in the morning, I get absolutely nauseous for about thirty minutes after and it feels as though I swallowed a pill ten times its actual size and it's still stuck in my throat. I haven't thrown up yet, but I've been up to that point for thirty minutes at a time. I'm weighing the benefits and side effects in considering whether or not to continue taking it. I haven't had the nauseau every time I've taken the pill, so I'm trying to drink water and eat to see if that helps. I'm thinking these side effects may subside over time.
Everyone's suggestions were really helpful to me so I wanted to post mine in hopes they will help someone else.

Omnicef is actually one antibiotic my 2 year old has little trouble with. The red stools are alarming but at least they are solid. Currently he's on Augmentin which has caused horrible rash and loose stools.
-- By renee79 | Reply | (1) replies | Private Message meThe other nice thing about Omnicef is the dosing schedule.Usually once or twice daily depending on the infection. The 3x daily with Augmentin is way too much stress for me to bear, and for him even more so. Seeing his poor little red butt makes me cry with him. Since the two drugs can be used for the same infections, I will be asking for the Omnicef first from now on. Omnicef seems to clear his infections very quickly. The Docs really should forewarn about the red stools though, they are quite scary, even though they are typically harmless.
