I think all of you folks with side affects are are blaming your ills on Lipitor rather than putting the blame where it belongs: on your own mental health. I am a 65 YO male and I have been on Lipitor for more than six years now. I have no side affects, I work out four days per week with cardio and weights and feel that Lipitor should be added to the public water supply. My total cholesterol has gone from the high two hundreds to under one-forty on a single daily dose of 10mg. All of you hypochondriacs get a grip.

My side effect has been a life changing exoerience. In October 2002, after being On lipitor for nearly 4 years, I developed lesions on my brain, extreme confusion, Lethargy, Ataxia, Apraxia. I was hospitalized for 28 days at the University of WI, Madison, and was about 1 week away from being transferred to a nursing home. My working Diagnois was MELAS, Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy with Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like Episodes, as evidenced on my brain and muscle biopsies, as well as serial lab tests which revealed Lactic Acidosis.. The only know treatment is a palliative one, which is called a mitochondrial cocktail. About 10 Vitamins and Amino Acids an twice daily. Included in this cocktail is Ubiquinone, also known as Coenzyme Q10, which the synthesis of this essential nutrient is so conveniently inhibited by Statin Drugs. The result f CoQ10 deficciency may include Neuronal Apoptosis (brain Cell death, which is what was demonstrated on my brain biopsy. Dr. Beatrice Golomb MD,PhD, principal investigator in the UCSD Statin Effects study has opined that "Lipitor was the likely causal Contributor to my illness and resultant disability". My primary Doctor still wants me to resume statin use, I told him I will take my chances with heart disease, rather than to die from whatever this thing is in my brain.
It has been 4 and 1/2 years now, I still suffer from extreme fatigue, Myoclonus in both my legss, and bilateral leg pain and weakness
Please let me know of any Legal Recourse I can join as I am completely disgusted with BIG PHARMA! I was a practicing Critical Care Registered Nurse for 12 years prior to this incident.

PLEASE email dr. Golomb at UCSD about your symptoms. She is conducting a study on self reported side effects from statins. with all of us reporting the myraid of symptoms we have suffered included in the study, maybe the scientific community will be forced to do something about this debacle. like study how statins damage the body and what to do to repair the damage. her email address:
thanks, m

please refer to the postings on another message board "DIT message board ". once you are on their web site scroll down to "Lipitor '. once you access this board, use the "search ' feature at top of page and type "ear" into search box--indicate you wish to find it within the body of the message, and select
'lipitor" of the boards available. I have read several postings in which the individual has suffered ear pain! also, please, please email dr. beatrice golomb at : statinstudy@ucsd.edu and ask to report your suspected side effects for the one and ONLY study about statins that has NOT BEEN FUNDED by the PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURED THE STATIN BEING STUDIED. Did you know that the studies that are carried out at academic centers are funded by pharmaceutical companies--and that the pharm scientists DESIGN THE STUDIES, DETERMINE THE PROTOCOLS, AND DETERMINE WHAT GETS REPORTED FROM THE STUDY? THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED LEGALLY OR ANY OTHER WAY TO REPORT ANY NEGATIVE FINDINGS- and they do not! only with the unbiased compilation of information about side effects will one be able to even begin to convince one's physician that the muscle pain, leg weakness, ear pain, headaches, hand tremor, etc.are due to the statin one is taking!

I took 40MG Lipitor for 3 years. A year ago I started experiencing extreme fatigue and severe muscle leg pain.
Stopped Lipitor 7 months ago and I have not had any improvement. Enrolled iin the UCSD study and was advised
that some people had immediate improvement when discontinuing Lipitor, some people took months and some people had no improvement, long term. I am taking 200MG
CQ10 in hopes it will help repair the muscle damage. I cannot
walk a city block without pain and extreme fatigue. Quality
of life greatly diminished due to this drug. I am afraid I am
in the group that is permanently disabled.

Let's Be Heard!!!!!!!
It saddens me to read & learn of the terrible damage being wrought by the use of these most dangerous STATIN drugs. Too many innocent people's lives have been ruined by the drug's debilitating side effects. Fight back...The NIH (National Institute of Health) is running a study on these dangerous side effects, which will be completed in 2004, and if you will try this website you can register your complaint. statinstudy@ucsd.edu

4 months ago started on preastatin 20mg increased within 1 month to 40mg; could not stand up without help; stopped statins at that time. CPK done 157, this was done to show me I wasn't in danger of rhabdomylysis, I continue to suffer with swelling R leg and severe pain. Leg is still swollen 4 months later.....I am professional RN in ICU ,,can't really do my job as necessary...Should I file for disability; or does someone have an answer to provide relief for this malady???
