Hi,
I am turning 22 in 3 months and have been on Yasmin for almost 5 years.
I can relate to almost all side effects listed on this site. I'm so glad I found this site now because I decided to stop taking Yasmin about a week ago. I just want to see how I fair without it.
While on Yasmin I was fine until the third year. I started experiencing severe anxiety, heart palpitations, severe mood swings. Small things infuriate me which normally never do. My skin is better but I experienced getting weird pimples that do not surface but cause deep scarring even if I do not fiddle with them. Also, I am about 5'2 and my pre Yasmin weight was 47 to 49 kg. I now weigh 53 to 55 kg so the equivalent gain of about 10 pounds in less than a year and it just keeps climbing. None of my clothes fit and this happened rapidly within a spce of 3 months. This is a lot for me as I am small in frame. The gain keeps on building around my stomach area and looks asif I am permanently bloated. IBS has been quite bad since Yasmin also.
I had a lot of suicide thoughts and feel lonely all the time. I would cry for no reason at all. For a while now I have been sooo tired and have energy for nothing. I cannot get out of bed in the morning and could easily sleep the entire day. Pre-Yasmin I would wake up at 7 every morning with no alarm and be wide awake! I used to have cool dreams, now I only have the occasional nightmare, and thats if I dream at all.
The worst was when I experienced SEVERE bloating on my stomach and strange ovary pains.(i looked asif i was 4 months preg) I had ultrasounds and x rays but they found nothing.
I was a BITCH with NO sex drive.
After a week without Yasmin, My sex drive has started creeping back and don't feel as bloated. Hopefully the weight will drop away soon as well.
Will post back here in a month.
Thank God for this site. I thought this pill was supposed to be a miracle. It is CRAP. I hope I don't need to go back on any form of birth control. I'm too scared now!

I am 24 years old. I started using the Nuvaring about 9 months ago, back in November shortly after my youngest son was born. In January, only two months after starting it, I was beginning to have severe stomach pains and a lot of nausea that would come and go throughout the day. I went into the emergency room one night because it got so bad and they told me that I was going to have to have my gallbladder removed due to large stones. I'm trying to figure out whether anyone else has had any similar issues with the ring. I have read here and there that gallbladder disease is a side effect but I also have issues with it in my family. Has anyone else had a problem with this? I have also dealt with a lot of depression, headaches, slight weight gain, mood changes (just as bad, if not worse then while I was pregnant) and I am going to have to schedule an eye exam because it seems like the past few months, my eye sight has just gone down hill fast. I have never had to wear glasses or contacts.
Has anyone else out there had issues with their gallbladder and eyesight? Most of the posts that I see are saying issues with hair loss and depression. I am seriously thinking about talking to my doctor about changing methods, I was just wondering if there are people having symptoms like mine or whether I need to attribute them to something else. Any information would be helpful, Thanks.

I was put on the NuvaRing by my OBGYN to fix endometriosis... that was 5 1/2 years ago... I'm now 26 and I have been having dizzy spells for a while... actually passed out twice while living in New York for the past 4 years... not fun when you're on the Subway! Recently - the back of my legs started hurting! Then my calves swelled up! All these new veins appeared and I rushed to my general physician! The first thing out of her mouth was are you on birth control... GET OFF! When i told her it was NuvaRing - she was 99% sure it was it! I had an ultrasound to make sure it wasn't blood clots and it's not... so I went to nuvaring website and one of their symptoms is pain in back of knees and swelling! RIDICULOUS!!!! I took it out immediately! Even the 32 year old who did my ultrasounds said she voluntarily got off all BC because of everyone she has come in there with liver, blood, heart problems!

Hello i'm 20 and i had Mirena put in because me and my husband aren't planning on having kids for a while. when I got to the doctors i told the doctors the i had been cramping out of the left side of my abdomen for a month he said it was okay to go a long with the procedure so i did it. He had to use the tool with hooks to straighten my cervix (which hurt like no other) and inserted the iud. The second he put the mirena in i lost control of my body and vomited everywhere i couldn't hear anything and couldn't focus on anything but the pain. It was a military hospital so of course nothing is close by i had to wobbly walk through the waiting room with my pants half way put on to get to the bathroom i barely made it (because i lost control of my bowls) but, once i sat down i nearly passed out. When i pulled myself together i met my husband and told him how i felt and he not only could see it my face but he could also see i was hardly coherent i was scared and in a lot of pain so much that had to be put in a wheelchair to get back to the room i was in. I hyperventilated and had to have to shots given to me for pain and nausea. I beg and screamed for them to take it out and no one would do it. Two days after i went home after the placement i went to the emergency room do to a shooting pain in my uterus they were very rude and said that it was just my head and that i was doing it to myself the did some ultrasounds and turns out i have had cysts on my over that cause my body to do this. I plan on getting the iud removed in 5 days and i have only had it for 2 weeks do not let your doctors push you around if you want it out take it out.

First of all, a big thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences. I am a biochemist, with a background in pharmaceutical research...I chose the Mirena IUD after careful consideration of it's active ingredient, Levonorgestrel. The side effect profile seemed pretty acceptable...until I started to experience nearly ALL of them...I am 33 years old and had the Mirena IUD placed in October of 2008 after the birth of my second child in June of 2008. The initial reaction was to be expected...cramping, a little spotting etc...nothing to be alarmed about. I still have yet to have a period (which I really don't miss so no problem there) I never gave a second thought to this until now...for the past month or so (coinciding with the weening process, since I have been nursing the entire time, I believe the side effects were not as noticeable) I have been experiencing the following (that may or may not be related to Mirena as my OBGYN has so adamantly pointed out, but after reviewing your posts I'm willing to bet they're connected) and are in order of occurrence: Major, but temporary, hair loss after 2 months or so; Major respiratory infection lingering over a month with difficulty breathing, tightness and pain in the chest at around 6 mos; And in the past month, several instances of motion-like sickness/ nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, major impatience/ mood swings, loss of appetite (pregnancy-like symptoms...yep, I was thinking man I'd be pretty pissed if I was that 0.01% pregnant statistic), and as of this past weekend, my first aurora migraine with tunnel vision and serious nausea and vomiting, to the point where I went to Urgent Care...who referred me to the ER...who wants to perform a battery of tests including a head CT. I have an appointment with a trusted GP tomorrow to discuss possible root causes...but it is to coincidental that so many women are experiencing these same symptoms! I am certainly leaning towards having this removed. CAN THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE HAD THIS REMOVED PLEASE RESPOND IF YOUR SYMPTOMS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED OR WERE RESOLVED!!! THANK YOU!
These side effects seem to go well beyond a 5% rate of incidence according to all of you who have reported. I will investigate further and keep everyone posted. As someone who is highly experienced in the pharmaceutical industry, you bet your a$$ I'm going to get to the bottom of this! Good luck ladies!

I had been taking this for years and about three-four yrs ago they changed generic. I had horrible stomach and abdominal problems. Not diarrhea or constipation but pain swelling bloating and feeling a lump in ab. Went to cts, ultrasounds, 3 colonoscopies, endoscopy, pill camera,I went through 3 primary care doctors. Had emergency hosp.visits. Doctors.started getting to think I was crazy That made me depressed to the point I didn"t want to see anyone or go any where. Not one Dr. suggested it could be one of my meds. By accident over the Christmas holidays I ran out of my lisinopril hctz. within 3 days I felt normal again Swelling in ab stopped and most of pain.ever gonna get near that poison again.# months later Im doing a lot better I actually feel good .Its amazing I think it caused me a rare reaction called intestinal angioedema .That is basically hives on your insides. Could be dangerous if esophogeous is involved I lucked out.I did have wheezing and shortness in breathing .People Beware Its a dangerous drug.

Im almost 19, and in summer of 08 I started having terribly sever abdominal pain, mostly in my right side right where you appendix is. I was sent to the ER multiple times because my OB thought I had appendicitis. I went through many MRI's, lots of blood work and ultrasounds and every time they tried to tell me that my appendix was fine and the implied that I was over reacting and the pain wasn't real. The only thing that they found was free fluid in my abdomen which they said was probably from a ovarian cyst. But the thing with that was that my pain should've been better after the cyst ruptured and it had not improved at all. Finally, my OB did another ultrasound and found that I had a blood clot on my right ovary. So my OB told me that she HAD to go in and do a laparoscopy in order to remove the cyst. When I woke up from surgery I was surprised to find out that not only did I have a blood clot, I had endometriosis all over my abdomen especially on my appendix causing so many problems there that she had to remove it. My doctors opinion on how to treat the ENDO was simple, to go on Lupron. She told me that people just RAVED about how good this drug was. Because of the pain I had been in before the surgery, I was very quick to decide to take the lupron. The first shot was the beginning of my problems. I cannot even begin to remember all of the problems I've had. The hot sweats where UNREAL. I mean I would be drenched in sweat. I could barely stand to have clothes on. I mean, every 10 minutes I would suffer from another hot sweat. They were constant. I was extremely nauseous. I would constantly throw up. My appetite was ruined, I became very sore all over my body. The most horrible of all of the side effects was the weight gain. I was around 130 pounds at the beginning of the shots I now weigh over 160 pounds and I BARELY EAT! and what I do eat is healthy, I work out, when I can, and still, no weight loss. I just continue to gain with every shot. I am on shot 4 of 6 right now and have decided to quit. I can't deal with the horrible side effects of this drug.

I just had my mirena removed after a month of sharp shooting pains in my left ovary area..i had two vaginal ultrasounds to see if i had a cyst...the pain in my side felt like someone stabbing me....my doctor said i probably have endometrious....he wanted to do surgery right away...i had an appointment to discuss my options at the end of next week and today i woke up with cramps again and that same stabbing shooting pain in my ovary area...made an emergency appointment to see the doctor, he removed it and said it probably wasn't the best option for me since i have no kids. Thanks for the RX now!!!! I'll let you know how the next few days go to see if that pain comes back

Hi Ladies,
I've had the mirena in for about 3 1/2 years. I have in the past recommended it. About 4 months after it was put in, I had no periods and according to my ob/gyn, this was absolutely normal for the mirena. I loved it, having 4 children, who has time for a period. I have always struggled with my weight and I've always been able to control it, but recently within the last year it has gone way up. I started exercising my butt off and dieting, I'm finding very difficult to lose weight. Only losing an pound or two just to gain it plus two the following month. I am 39 years old and my GP keeps telling me that once I hit 40, it would be more difficult for me to lose weight. Out of pure desperation, last Friday, I decided to look up the side effects of the mirena . (Cuz you know my ob/gyn said "there wasn't any side effects except the initial cramping. and absolutely no weight gain like the pill.") I would of never thought that it had so many side effects! ... And I've experienced almost everyone. I blew off most of my symptoms due to high blood pressure, which runs in my family, and the stresses of work, two teenagers, a 5 yr old and a 4year old. I would say if I had to pin point when the symptom started, it would be about 2 years ago. All those years of insomnia, anxiety attacks, dizziness, head aches, bloating, weight gain and yes even depression, that I was prescribe prozac for, could be due to the mirena. I immediately made a doctors appointment to get in removed. Well, that was this Monday and the Nurse Practioner couldn't find the strings. Two ultrasounds later, I still have it in and am waiting the "what are they going to do now, and my next appointment this Friday." I Just want this thing out and wish I never got it in the first place!!"

I had my Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I had my son (14 months ago) at the suggestion of my o.b. (she was using one also).... had I known then what I know now, my post partum birth control decision would have gone in a totally different direction! Insertion was very painful! Sex with my husband was awkward at first, mainly because he could feel the strings (they are wires!!!) poking him during deep insertion... After several weeks of getting used to the mirena, the nightmares started in! Sleepless nights, tossing, turning, dreaming about my fears and insecurities, and waking up sore... feeling like I had been run over by a truck! Moodiness and quick tempered feelings also came with the little devil... wanting to kill my husband and children over the littlest things like not eating all their dinner or not picking up their laundry...stupid stuff? My husband kept asking me why I was so angry, mean and hurtful...these are not traits I usually possess! I had become a bundle of tired, bitchy nerves! Then I had a trip to the emergency room, thought to be an appendicitis at first.....but no! I have a golf ball cyst on my right ovary, compliments of the mirena!! Now I have to have monitoring of this cyst until it bursts or is so painful I cant take it anymore and have to have it removed!!! Needless to say, I booked an appointment a few weeks ago and and have my mirena removed three days ago... I know it is going to take a while before I am "normal" and heal myself from this awful cyst, but I cant wait to love myself, husband and children again...if you are thinking of getting this inserted in your body, think again!!! Your doctors will not tell you what these women have experienced and gone through!!! Don't be a part of a class action suit down the line, money can't replace your health and well being :(

On September 9th, 2008, I had the mirena inserted and it was horrible. My right ovary felt like it had exploded and a burst of burning pain radiated down my leg. I broke out into a sweat, felt dizzy, and nauseated. The doctor said they never had that reaction before and had me lay down until I felt better. The doctor wanted to do an ultrasound, right then, but the doctors that did the ultrasounds were not available, so she gave me a Motrin and told me to go to the emergency room if I had severe pain or bleeding. She sent me home. This THING is constantly on my mind since I had it put in. I hate it!! I am tired all the time, headaches, bloating, dry eyes, back pain, hair loss, constant feeling of being in a fog, cramps everyday, and the burning pain I experienced during insertion comes back more and more frequently. My ovary and leg hurt me so bad that I feel like I'm going to pass out. Two weeks after insertion I went in to have the strings trimmed and let the doctor know my symptoms-she looked puzzled and made me feel like I was crazy, but suggested that we have an ultrasound done, so she scheduled me an appointment for it-two weeks later. I had a follow up with the doctor one week after that and she said everything looked fine and to take ibuprofen for the pain. I went back three weeks later to have my strings trimmed-again. She was amazed that they seemed longer than they were the first time she trimmed them. She said that it was either "settling" lower, or it was falling out. She did an internal exam, but did not feel it, so she suggested that I at least give it another month before I consider taking it out. I agreed because I paid a lot of money for it and my options are limited. Since my last visit, I've been researching mirena a bit and was surprised to hear that so many women have been experiencing these side effects. I plan on having the mirena removed, but have been researching tubal ligation as my next step. Then I ran into something called tubal ligation syndrome, which has side effects that I am currently experiencing. I talked to my boyfriend about all of this last night and he has agreed to have a vasectomy. The bad thing about that is I have to wait for him to have it done and wait until his sperm count is at zero. That could take a month or more! The good thing is that I won't have to think or worry about getting pregnant anymore and I won't have some foreign piece of hormonal plastic in my body any longer. I will never recommend the mirena to anyone-ever!

Well, I have had my Mirena since June/08. I had my son in May/08. I was 7 weeks pp when I had it put in. After my son was born I felt ok, no pains besides my c section scar
NOW...since insertion I have had a mess of problems. I have been a healthy woman for a long time and never had issues like this until July-ish. I am 27.
1. I had horrible back pain and my legs felt like I walked in 7" heels the night before (the tight muscle cramps, etc). My PCP told me I could possibly have a slipped disc and wanted me to go to PT. I had all my blood work come back fine btw. Since I knew in my heart I didn't have a slipped disc I did not waste my money on PT.
2. I have NO sex drive. The thought of sex makes me gag. No joke. I had sex 6 weeks pp and had a libido with no sleep. My son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I still don't want sex. As I type, I could go the rest of my life with no sex. THAT IS NOT ME AT ALL!
3. Extreme tiredness. Like I said my son sleeps 11 hrs a night and I sleep 8 hrs a night.
4. Light-headedness- I do have a BP of 110/70 so if I get up fast I get dizzy, but more now than before.
5. Started to have SEVERE pelvic pain right above my c section scar. It hurt so bad I was about to go to the ER. I was home alone with my 6 mo old so I tried to wait it out. I called my OB and they got me in. In his exam he felt a huge knot in my pelvis and it hurt like a MF! He suspected a hernia so he sent me for a CT scan.
Got the results yesterday and they came back normal. He said maybe I bruised something. But why do I have a big knot in my pelvis?
I feel like I am crazy. My bf takes my pain issues with a grain of salt now days. My OB did say since there is progesterone in the Mirena that my leg issues could be from Mirena and he was more than happy to remove if I wanted.
I still have it in and more and more I am thinking of getting it removed. My issue is I am so bad at taking pills and didn't like the Depo.
Anyways ladies...please let me know if you have had these issues. My email is arizonaequine@yahoo.com
Hope this can help someone feel less crazy!!

PLEASE HELP! My father, age 74, was on lipitor for a year or so and then was switched to zocor a few weeks ago to help control his cholestorol. In the past week, the tightening he experienced in his leg, while on lipitor, has become debilitating leg pain now while he is on Zocor. Ultrasounds have ruled out a blood clot. He has no pain when he sits, but he describes the pain has his calf wanting to explode when he stands and he cannot walk with out the help of a cain. The pain radiates from his leg up to his hip.
His cardiologist has taken him off the zocor for a few weeks to see if there is an improvement. It has been 3 days and he feels a bit of relief. SO here is the million dollar question: His labs indicate his cholestorol is normal now, most likely thanks to the statins.....can anyone suggest another form of meds that will help regulate his cholestorol....say COeq10 and fish oil? Any help is SO appreciated!!! Thanks to each of you for your posts. It is so comforting for my dad to know he isn't developing a new issue and that it can be resolved with the removal of zocor!

I was put on birth control when I was 21 years old and I started with Estrostep FE for irregular and very painful periods. 9 years later, after complaining of unusually light periods and horrible hot flashes I was switched to Yasmin to see if that would make a difference. I was fine with the Yasmin for about 6 months but then I came down with what I thought might have been a stomach virus. I was fine until June of that year when I came down with what seemed to be another stomach virus. I found this odd as I had not had a stomach virus since I was eight years old, but I seemed to have contracted two within six months of each other 22 years later. By the time July hit, I was experiencing these "stomach viruses" just about every other day. I would have horrible acid indigestion and the sensation of needing to vomit (but I never would) which would send me running for the bathroom for hours at a time just in case I did. For over a year I sought the advice of doctors and had been theoretically diagnosed with the following: stress (always the first one), acid reflux disease, IBS, and gastroparesis. I have gone through an endoscopy, gastric emptying scan, colonoscopy, two ultrasounds, two CT scans and an MRI. Drug wise I have been put on Prevacid, Compazine, Zofran, Zegerid, Imipramine, Reglan, Levsid, and Erythromycin. I now am buried in medical bills and the whole thing has caused me to miss a month of work without pay. I also was struggling to eat and, at one point, had dropped 25 pounds which is very frightening for someone with my tiny frame. The mental anguish was unbearable and I was actually at the point of welcoming a diagnosis of cancer just because it would have been answer. The idea to stop taking the Yasmin actually came from a fifteen minute conversation during a birthday party with an obstetrician. Within two weeks of stopping I was absolutely fine. I gained all of the weight back in record time and am once again a person who rarely ever needs stomach aids (in three months I've only taken two tums). Stopping the Yasmin made absolute sense because the nausea episodes would only occur between 9am and 2pm (weird, just like morning sickness) and my thyroid levels were all over the place. One blood test would show them as normal and another would show them as sky-high. I questioned my ob-gyn why she said my blood tests were normal when my thyroid levels were actually twice the normal level. She merely shrugged it off as being "normal because of the Yasmin". No wonder I never felt well! I've been off Yasmin for three months now. I've only gotten one light period that lasted for three days. It was over a month ago and it took almost two months to happen after stopping the Yasmin. I don't know if I'm sterile because I have heard cases of girls becoming infertile after long-term use of the pill (any kind). I am definitely interested in joining a class action lawsuit because I don't feel I should be the one stuck with all of these bills. Has anything been officially started yet?

The only medication i take is Wellbutrin Xl low dosage. I don't know if this is actually FROM the Wellbutrin, but about 9 months ago, i developed urinary tract symptoms of chronic urination. I have to go to the bathroom dozens of times a day , and at night I get up 6-7 times to pee. Full bladder pees.
I do drink more water during the day, as i get dry mouth from the medication, but this is not just related to water, because if i stop drinking more water, this will still occur. I'm in good health and my doctor told me I am too young to have urinary dysfunctions that come in older age. There is nothing found by ultrasounds. I Was wondering if anyone else on WELLBUTRIN XL is experiencing this as well. Also, recently I had a sudden increase in my blood pressure. I don't have a history of this.
I am 49 yrs old, white female and in generally good health.
I would not fail to mention that Wellbutrin XL is an excellent Antidepressant, the best of any of the others i have tried over the years. I am almost fully functioning, but still working on my issues.
I actually have felt emotions that were happy and positive on a recent basis after many years of "numbness". this drug has not had any headaches, anxiety causing, that wheel spinning or disorientation those other antidepressants had for me. I had to stop taking more than 8 different antidepressants in the past.
I'm just mostly wondering about urinary dysfunction issues. Please post if you are using this and having this.

My son was born March 2007, when he was 8wks old, to much of my surprise I found out that I was pregnant again. Mirena sounded perfect!!!! I had it placed 7 weeks after my 2nd son was born in Jan 2008. I had what I still assume is normal with any type of birth control method, irregular bleeding, cramping, some slight mood swings. That all seems normal to me when you mess with you body like that. Aug 1, 2008 I woke up at4am with awful abdominal pain sooo bad that I turned to my husband and said that I think I have to go to the hospital. I decided that if I could fall back asleep then its probably nothing major. I fell back asleep (or passed out, I don't know) The next morning I was hurting so bad I couldn't lift anything, couldn't stand up straight, felt weak and felt as though I had rocks in my stomach but had an empty feeling at the same time. The pain was all over my abdomen, stabbing, shooting, pinching. I also had pain aroung my belly button and a noticeable discomfort about my pevic bone. Finally I called my husband to come home, went to the hospital, they took blood, cultures, did an exam and did a ctscan. All normal! WHAT!! Aug 11th still having pain and now having MAJOR HOT FLASHES. I find myself getting so hot and irritated that I cant be around the babies because I am afraid I will yell at them. If I get in a little disagreement with my husband it will most likely end with me saying I want a divorce (I noticed another lady with that same problem) Today I had a ultra sound done and it came back what my (new) doctor says is normal. The problem with that is that one of my ovaries is split and is NOW shaped like a horse-shoe. I was pregnant for almost 2yrs straight and had lots of ultrasounds NOT ONE TIME did anyone say anything about a odd ovary. I'm just going to make a educated guess that it wasn't deformed till after the Mirena. Now I am wanting to remove it but feel like I should get every test known to man first to rule out any other possibility. I really don't want to remove it. I am afraid of getting it removed and even more of getting pregnant when I already have two 10 months apart and still in diapers.
My biggest question is wanting to know if hot flashes are related or if I might be having something else going on. Am I the only one with he hot flashes? I have them all day long!!!!!!!!
Also I noticed after reading other post that some other things may be related like, piercing headaches, itchy flaky oily scalp, weight gain, ear drainage, lower back pain, oily skin, increased smoking, in-grown hairs in inner thigh area, joint pain, fatigue, decrease sex drive.

"Unusual thickening of the endo lining" or what others have called
"Estrogen Dominant Condition"
There is a connection, although it's not talked about or addressed specifically in the Medical Forums or Mirena's own website, of the effect that this device has on your hormone levels and what it does to your body after it's been removed.
I had a normal lining, proven by ultrasounds prior to the insertion that progressed to 10mm a week after removal of the device and progressive thickening of the endo lining up to 13mm in the 8 week followup ultrasound.
So, a quick summar of what happened to me after removal of this device (after only having it in under 21 days):
* irregular complex cyst (gone within 6 weeks)
* thickened uterine lining (deemed abnormal) measuring at 10mm
* increase in lining thickness, now up to 13mm (6 week's time)
Note: at around 15mm, the "C" word starts getting used
Was any of this discussed with you by your doctor? Certainly not mine.
This will be submitted to the FDA, to be included with my initial report. Please submit your own reports! This cannot be ignored.

I have had mirena since April of 2008. It took me this long but I decided to check out if there were side effects posted from people because I, like others have had almost the exact same symptoms of everyone who has posted here. I have been taking vicodin for the migraines, been depressed, have horrible acne (especially on my back which I have never had before!), very painful intercourse (actually started crying once because it was that bad!) bled for like 4 months and now I bleed like forever when I do get my period, which is still every month, and it is kinda like spotting but enough that I can't have sex! I even went to the hospital one night because the cramping was so bad! They did ultrasounds and everything and told me everything was fine. I, like many others, have been waiting for all these symptoms to go away! I think I will consider getting it removed at this point. And oh yeah, lately I have experienced alot of discharge and it kinda has a weird odor, not a yeast infection- I tested, and no symptoms with peeing so prolly not a bladder thing and def not an std-been with same partner for 6 years! What do I do!

i'm 26 and this is the first time i've ever taken any birth control. for the past 2 1/2 yrs, i've had my period every month and a half, then every two months, and the last period was three months late. after many visits to the gyno - ultrasounds and blood work, i gave in to the idea of trying this out for a short period of time to get my periods jump started again. i've been on loestrin 24 for 4 weeks now. i had a period after the first week of pills, i've been nauseous 90% of the time, i have unexplained pains in my chest and i've been crying more than usual. i've felt depressed, anxious, and have severe mood swings - all of these things are more than normal and i thought i was just loosing my marbles. after reading this site things make sense now and i'm going to stop taking it. my gyno says how i feel is normal but that my "emotional" part has nothing to do with the bc. there's no abnormal stresssors in my life as of late but maybe trying a different bc might help.

I am on my 3rd NuvaRing, and my last NuvaRing. This thing has cause me more pain and problems than anything I have ever used! The first time around the only problem I had was an increase in UTI's and extreme discomfort in my vagina and urethra, especially during and days after sex. I was told these side effects would go away within the next trial of the NuvaRing. Boy, were they wrong. After Taking out my second NuvaRing my period lasted from JULY 5TH to JULY 18TH! I also had to face the heaviest period of my life. I would go through a super plus absorbency tampon and panty liner in less than an hour. How embarrassing, inconvenient, and uncomfortable! I have had two ultrasounds, and 3 pelvic exams since starting the NuvaRing just 3 months ago. I have also had to face headaches, stomach pains, MOOD SWINGS, IRRITABILITY, and depression. This thing has put a damper on my sex drive and my relationship with everyone around me including my boyfriend of 3 1/2 years. I would not recommend the NuvaRing to anyone!!!!!!!!

I am 3 weeks post removal and I am still experiencing aches and pains throughout my body, still have the 10lb weight gain, some mood swings and extreme tiredness and some periodic bloating...I am fed up! I have 2 questions: Has anyone found anything about this hormone levonorgestrel and how long it takes to get out of your system? Second, if anyone knows of any suits against these people, let me know because this is really interfering with my life and with my children and my boyfriend!! This is ridiculous, I didn't know about all of this crap prior to getting the Mirena and wouldn't have gotten it if I did know, and I am still paying for it after removal! Please let me know...thanks!! : )

I had my Mirena IUD removed on Monday, May 5, 2008. I had it inserted on November 10, 2005. I was having major side effects from the birth control, and every doc I went to said that there is no way that Mirena would cause the side effects I was having because the "progesterone amounts are too low to cause these side effects". I have had the following side effects:
WEIGHT GAIN
JOINT PAIN
LUMPS IN BREASTS
BREAST TENDERNESS
HUNGER (as if i were pregnant)
DEPRESSION
LOSS OF SEX DRIVE
HAIR LOSS
SWOLLEN ABDOMEN (BLOATED?)
HEADACHES
GROUCHY/ON EDGE
ACNE
CYST (had a couple weeks ago... i was on vacation in Vegas and had a cyst burst.. never had these issues... this was the last straw)
STABBING PAINS IN ABDOMEN AND IN AREA OF OVARIES
PMS SYMPTOMS EVERY OTHER WEEK FOR TWO YEARS
BREAST GROWTH D TO DD
VAGINAL BLEEDING AFTER INTERCOURSE
FATIGUE
TENDERNESS OF ABDOMEN
BACK PAIN
HIP PAIN
As of today, Friday, May 9, 2008 (4 days after Mirena has been removed) I have lost 9 pounds. I am sure this is probably water weight? I am feeling a little better every day. The night I got home from having it removed, I had major mood swings... would be happy one minute and crying my eyes out the next!!! I would not recommend this IUD to ANYONE.. not even on my worst enemy (if I had one). This needs to be taken off the market. It is not safe! I have spent thousands of dollars on ultrasounds on my breasts (thinking i could have cancer because the lumps i had in my breast) and on other doctors bills to figure out what was wrong with me.. only to find out that "Mirena is not the cause"!!!!

I am 20 years old and had basically tried every form of birth control before Mirena (the pill {multiple kinds}, the NuvaRing, and the shot). My OBGYN talked to me about the possibility of Mirena. Normally they do not do it for people who haven't had children but with my track record with other forms of birth control we decided to go ahead with it. I got it put in place in October 2007 and passed out on the table. It was the worst pain I have had in my entire life and had to lay down in the hospital bathroom for 45 minutes after insertion because I couldn't even stand up. I cried the whole hour ride home after and my boyfriend had to carry me up three flights of stairs into my apartment. I bled for a month and a half after insertion and then didn't see any blood until a month ago. I started getting very bad cramps (have had them all along but not bad, they said my body had to get used to it so I could have some cramping for a few months), after one day of the horrible cramping I finally had to go to the ER. The Dr's told me I had a 3inch ovarian cyst that had ruptured. After CT scans, and multiple internal and external Ultrasounds they found it was still 1 inch long and put me back on the pill to shrink it. They claim Mirena couldn't be the cause but I am doubtful, I have never had a cyst until Mirena and I think it is the cause. Ovarian cysts are on the side effects chart for Mirena so it is interesting that they told me that can't be the cause. Anyway, after weeks on 3 Vicodin a day and constant pain I started feeling better but occasionally still have pain. The doctors also thought they might have to surgically remove it which could put at risk my possibility of having children (SCARY!) If another cyst comes I will get it removed, I have had it for 6 months and can't deal with anymore. I'm about ready to be celebit until I'm ready to have kids because going through all of this is not worth it. If anyone has had the same problems and got it removed can you email me and tell me how bad it hurt? I am going to be really upset to have gone through all of this to have more awful pain to have it removed. Thanks- my email is ******

MIRENA is the worst thing EVER!!!!!!
I got Mirena as my husband and I were lacking in the sexual side of our relationship because we both HATE using condoms.I have a 31/2 year old son and we have decided that for now we are happy and would like if we didn't have anymore children right now so I talked to my doctor about Mirena.
Let me start by saying that my labor 6 hours with NO pain meds was nothing compared to the pain I had when they put it in. Then the bleeding started right away I was bleeding for 8 weeks then had 1 week free and now have been bleeding for about 8 weeks. I had 2 ultrasounds to make sure it was in proper and everything was "fine" my doctor says everyone's body reacts different.
The symptoms I have are Occasional Cramping,
Sever bleeding,
headaches,
irritation in my legs (same symptoms as RLS),
Depression,
no sex drive,
back pain
Weight Gain (17lbs in 2 weeks)
and the weirdest symptom is hard to explain but its the same feeling in my body as if you were to touch a 9volt battery to your tongue! Every now and then I have little shocks and its so annoying. I have had mine in for 17 weeks and I have an appointment in 8 days to have it removed...Back to condoms it is
