I have been taking singulair for a little over two years now 10mg once a day everyday for allergies. A year ago I began have a lot of suicidal tendencies. I was actually locked in a hospital psych ward after slicing my wrist wide open. They kept me for three days saying I was a danger to myself. I had to have my husband, friends, neighbors, etc to actually testify that this was very unusual behavior for me to be allowed to go home. Since then paramedics and the police have been called to my home by either my husband or a suicide hot line for fear of suicide. Three years ago I was on Chemotherapy for 8 months it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to go through in my life, but, I did it in order to live. So this type of behavior had my whole family, husband, and myself baffled. Today my husband was watching the news and called me to come see what they were saying about singulair! I was shocked, but, also relieved! I'm seriously thinking of suing. I'm really glad this came out in the open.

My 5 year old daughter was prescribed this med in late November for asthma. After about 3 weeks I started noticing some unusual behavior patterns - waking up in at night, waking up earlier, complaining of being tired, not listening, aggressive behaviors. Upon going back to school after the holiday her teacher said that she's not listening, is not 'herself', not doing her work. Yesterday her teacher called me at home to describe her uncooperative behavior. I made the connection to Singulair and found this web site. Boy, do I feel sick and angry at the myself, the pharmaceutical industry, and my pediatrician who called this 'the perfect drug with no side effects' when I asked her what the side effects are. I will not continue this medication and will not put my children on any meds without fully researching them first. I intend to look into alternative and natural treatments for her asthma.

My 7 year old son has been taking Singulair for about 2 years now. He has suffered from asthma since he was an infant and started with Pulmicort, then Zyrtec, then Singulair with Claritin (adding Albuterol and Flovent during periods of wheezing) as he aged. We have changed meds often due to concerns about staying on a steroid (Pulmicort) and noticible behavior problems (Zyrtec) and were assured by his doctor that Singulair does not have the same side-effects as the others. After reading so many of the other postings on this site, we are pretty certain that his unusual behavior (ADD like attention problems, fits of crying for no reason, inability to explain why he is doing things, acting out, etc.) are possibly the result of the Singulair. Like many others who have posted on this site, my son had always been a sweet well-behaved child who people loved to be around. However, over the past couple of years we have noticed more and more incidents of inappropriate behavior in school and nothing we have tried has worked to resolve the behaviors. He basically annoys others to the point that they avoid being around him and recently classmates have asked his teacher to move them to another table so they do not have to be bothered by him. Yesterday he cried uncontrollably for over 20 minutes when a toddler broke apart a Lego design he had just finished. I am going to stop the Singulair today and see if we notice any improvements over the next few weeks. I know we are at risk of asthma attacks without it (it definitely controls his asthma as he has not had an attack since going on it), but will continue the Claritin and have Albuterol if needed. NO medicine is worth taking if it can have such an impact on a child's behavior! I just hope, if it is the meds that have caused his behavior, that it is reversible after he is off and he will go back to beging the great kid that he used to be.

My 6 yr. old son was started on Singulair for what
was believed to be exercise-induced asthma back in October 2005. We were only
given a sample pack of approx. 12 doses to try. He originally complained of
headaches and I noticed that it was one of the side effects as listed in the
pamphlet that came with the sample pack. Approximately two weeks later, he was
given a prescription for it at his well visit by his pediatrician (we did
however have a pending appointment to see an allergist for future testing).

I had started to notice some unusual behavior on my son's part (he was making a
slurping-type sound out of the corner of his mouth and he was starting to have
blinking and eye tics - looking up/rolling his eyes/while opening his mouth). I
then stop giving him the Singulair for approximately 2 weeks since we were
planning to see the allergist. I didn't feel right about giving it to him
without actually getting a formal diagnosis yet, plus he still said he was
getting headaches.

I then started second guessing myself and was thinking that perhaps his unusual
behavior/tics were caused by his allergies, so I started him back on the
Singulair.
We met with the allergist and found that he did have seasonal allergies along
with an allergy to dust mites and cats (we have had a cat now for one year), so
obviously they wanted him to continue on the Singulair once daily.

He has been on Singulair regularly now for approximately 1 1/2 months and I have
noticed what my husband and I call tics - he is blinking alot, he still opens
his eyes widely, in the last few days he has started grinding his teeth, tilting
his head toward his shoulder as if he were stretching his neck and I noticed him
today moving his mouth to one side.
Needless to say, my husband and I are scared to death. I only have a small
sense of comfort after reading some of the posts on this site from other parents
who are mentioning possible ticks from Singulair usage. I have been crying my
eyes out daily lately after watching my son's actions. I am fearful that he is
developing Tourette's Syndrome/Disorder and he has an appointment in approx. 2
weeks to see a Neurologist about this problem. I was due to pick-up his next
month's supply of Singulair as I have only one dose left, but I have decided to
stop him cold turkey! I am not going to give him his last dose of Singulair. I
don't know how long it will stay in his system, but I pray to God that this is
the cause and that it is not something worse.

Have anyone else experienced anything similiar to what I am describing? Have
you noticed anything like tics? I would love to hear from someone who has
posted previously about their possible tics with their children and what they
have been experiencing lately? Did you stop using Singulair and if yes, what
have you found? Have the "tics" gone away?

My 5 year old has been taking this for 2 months. He was having trouble with a persistent cough/runny nose, which the dr. diagnosed as allergies. Since starting Singulair, he has had a marked changed in his personality. He has become aggressive, angry, and depressed, and started hitting himself. It is as if he doesn't know how to deal with his emotions. This is very unusual behavior for him, he is normally a very happy, laid back, loving child. I am relieved to find this website & see that other parents have gone through this same experience, it has been helpful information. I have a call into the dr. office now to get a different medication, or else take him off it completely. Thank you for the help.
